bikerb join:2001-12-13 Walnut Creek, CA | Astound has be very good Astound installed all new cable in my neighborhood with a connection to the new fiber optics installed about 4 blocks away. The cable installed at my home was very professionly done. My cable internet connection has run perfectly. I get 1.5Mbps down, and 250Kbps up all the time. It's about $14/month cheaper than Pac Bell dsl, at $35.95/month. I had dsl from Pac Bell for a bit over a year and a half before. Good job, Astound!!

| | Almost live!
I knew about Astound two years ago when they were first deploying fiber optics in my area. They've been up and running in Concord (the next town over from me) for a year or so and I've heard really good things about them.
After years of waiting, they've finally started deploying service in my own city; they're heavily blanketing Walnut Creek with as much service availability as possible. I've seen their trucks and other service vehicles as well as sub-contractors driving all around town digging up sidewalks and feeding cable lines. As of right now, almost all of the neighbors on streets surrounding mine can order service. I'm waiting very patiently for my street to finally go live.
Anyone have any idea what the possible delay could be that's keeping streets parallel to Ygnacio Valley from getting on the network?
|
| | ASTOUND CABLE Ive had astound cable for about 6 months now and I was getting 3000mbps down and 250mbps up and now every sinse they came out with these dumb deals of 4 types of speeds they cut my speed in half!!!!! I get 1500mbps down now but same upload at 250, I was really disapointed when I realised this so I called and they said well I was getting to fast of speed so they lowerd it to what I should be at... I think that is gay they should want to give as much as possible... | |
|
| | | Re: ASTOUND CABLE
If you want more speed, you'd better start paying for it and consider yourself lucky to have been getting double what you pay free for those 6 months.

| | Pole-top vs. underground A friend of mine ordered service from Astound today, living only a couple blocks from me. She managed to get a little insight into the delays others' are experiencing going live.
Apparently, it's taking Astound longer to wire up residences fed by pole-top wires rather than underground wiring. My friend is lucky enough to have underground wiring; I am not.
Who else out there is running off of pole-top in the Walnut Creek area? Anyone actually live yet?
|
| | | Re: Pole-top vs. underground I never thought I'd be saying this.. but holy crap! I can finally get cable internet. They had reps all up and down my street today hanging door knockers informing everyone of availibility on Venado Camino. Hoora! | |

| | Astound cable west of 680 Astound trucks wired my street a few weeks ago but when I called them they would not say when service would be available. I am just west of 680 on Sunnyvale Ave near Geary Rd at N. Main St »www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?&c···state=CA
As of today, Astound's Walnut Creek map »www.astound.net/maps_cali2.htm does not show it "coming soon" here.
Does anyone west of 680 know when they'll hook us up?
|
| | | Re: Astound cable west of 680
That's a very tough question to answer. I waited for a year while I watched Astound installation in Concord. When they finally came into my neighborhood in Walnut Creek, it took about 2 months of installing until I was able to order (date set for Wednesday). The whole two months I called them like crazy asking over and over if they had a time-frame of completion.
Let me tell you, I don't think you're going to get a lot out of them, or anyone else, unless you manage to reach the CEO himself. They don't seem to like to make promises about completion dates or time-frames.
|
| | | astound may not be able to give you a date because the work required involves other contractors and astound does not control the scheduling of those other contractors. If astound were to promise that you'd be ready to go by July 31, based on committments from all of their sub-contractors, then just one contractor gets behind the schedule and the service isn't ready until mid-August, astound would have to wear the albatross because you have no visiblity of the real perpetrator. So, it's much better marketing to give no date at all, and simply tell people "We're working on it right now. Call back again next month." | |
|
| | Things to know Astound installers messed up one of the cable drops and added me to my nieghbor's phone line. Astound does not offer Seasonal sports packages like NHL Center ICE.
Service does seem to be consistent. No service interruptions.
|
| | Asound blocks NAT box? I have been using astound in Saint Cloud, MN for about four months. There was an issue with the phone install, the tech messed up switching my apartment with another in the same building, I ended up getting someone else's calls.
The cable internet service has been ok with minor slowdowns at peak use times. However, my attempt to use a Linux nat/firewall box failed. Has anyone had experience with this? I assume that when you pay $5 per extra computer(s) they provide you with a hub/switch or cable modem with integrated switch? It is frustrating that astound does not allow a hardware firewall even when used with a single computer.
|
| TTJ @astound.net | Re: Asound blocks NAT box? I've been using astound high speed cable broadband with a NAT switch for over two years with no problems. I don't know why they would care, it's not like adding a more computers would affect them at all. You're not going to draw more bandwidth, you're just dividing it up.

| | | | Re: Asound blocks NAT box? Astound does not limit what you can attach to your cable modem, whether it be a router or NAT. Many users have successfully gotten these pieces of equipment to work fine. What Astound does not do is SUPPORT these items, though with a few resets and config changes, most users are able to get their network equipment working. | |

| | Does Astound offer full Usenet Newsgroup feeds? Does Astound offer full access to Usenet Newsgroups? TIA | |
|
| | | Re: Does Astound offer full Usenet Newsgroup feeds Astound is unfortunatley unable to offer complete binaries. Thats basically due to the cost of bandwidth and news peers required to get 100% completion on binaries. Allthough their text feed is great! | | Astound took my payment
Astound took my payment I called they said they must have credited some one else, I told them that was not acceptable and told them to pick this thing up. They said that I would have to bring it in, or I would get billed for the box that is valued 300. something they are RUDE no servers to the community people.

1 edit | Ca Astound DNS lookup issues I agree with the Anon4Now who said that DNS lookup issues have become very common in the 94596 zip code area - at least three prolonged periods this week. I had an extremely frustrating talk with a tech today - bottom line, if you think you are experiencing what might be a system-wide problem, call them, even if it's after hours, and even if your internet isn't completely out. Even though the website and phone system says not to call, they will act on system-wide problems, but only if 3 people call within a 15 min period. I queried other members of my computer club in this area - I am not the only one with the DNS lookup issues.

EricTheO join:2001-04-12 South San Francisco, CA | RCN to Astound Email Migration is now Live!
RCN's S.F. area is now transitioning to Astound Broadband. The Email Migration feature is now online. Unfortunately I ran into a problem with 2 of our 3 secondary email accounts failing to migrate properly. Our main email account and one secondary account migrated without any problems. Customer service answered promptly when called and said they would check into it and report the next day,I was migrating the accounts just past midnight.

Ever since RCN switched to Astound in my area (San Mateo / 94403), The internet has been slow as molasses. Lots of drops and timeout periods. I used to work for RCN in the past and we would resolve issues quickly. My old co-workers, who are now Astound employees, say that this company is slower at fixing issues. Anyone notice a significant difference in their internet connection on the SF Peninsula?
|
| | | Re: Astound slow in RCN area I don't know when exactly the switch was from RCN to Astound for me, but this week my internet has became horribly slow | |
|
| | | | Re: Astound slow in RCN area I'm also starting to notice lag, etc. AT&T stopped by the other day to tell me that U-verse is available in my neighborhood. I'm going to look into it. Since I have to change things it may as well be my choice! | |
|
| | | I am also an RCN customer in San Mateo who got involuntarily switched to Astound. Astound is getting painfully slow for me too, especially during the last week. It is not the broadband, that is still getting 9000Ks down and 781K up. It most likely DNS resolution, possibly other connectivity delays. I agree that I _never_ had these problems with RCN. But I dread AT&T or Comcast. | |

| Premium channels not available in San Mateo, CA My premium channels are not available and I have been on hold for 20 minutes, without having spoken with a real person yet. On top of that, I can't even find an email link to support on their webpage. People around here used to talk bad about RCN, but I never had this long of a wait on a Saturday morning. | |

| Re: Premium channels not available in San Mateo, CA Well, someone finally answered the phone after 31 minutes. He could not resolve my problem and scheduled a truck roll-out on Tuesday ~3:00-5:00 pm. The issue self-resolved later in the day, I am not going to call Astound back to cancel the service call as I don't feel the need to wait another 30-plus minutes. | |

| So my daughter was home this afternoon and a CS rep called. He asked if the channels were still missing, my daghter told them that they were back on. The rep actually asked her why they were not originally working. Her answer to him was, aren't you supposed to know??? | |
