| Mountain Cable Users- Sign In! I guess so far I'm the only one who uses Mountain Cable. I'm in Hamilton at the moment. Not a bad service. Speed is OK- 2000/256kbps for speed. Newsgroup server isn't so good for binaries- not very high completion. Haven't tried out the webspace or email services yet.
Good cable internet service. -- Black Mage may be evil, but he sure does love that Canadian Forum

| Re: Speed Good stuff.
If you've got the phone service, then definitely make them aware of the missing battery.
Glad the email issue is all sorted out.
For TCP/IP settings, just set them all to default. It's not like DSL. Your IP is assigned by DHCP, not PPPoE - nothing to setup really. Here are my settings..

Reason it didn't come with any paperwork or manual is because theres nothing really to tweak per say. All you have to do is hook up your modem to your computer. The rest is on the computer. Run the New connection wizard, select connect to the internet, setup manually, and select my connection is always on. Thats it. No setting up username or pw to connect on XP or setting up PPPoE in the modem.
If you want, the spec sheet is available here: »www.arrisi.com/product_catalog/_···402P.pdf
Just make sure you've deleted all of the Sympatico stuff. Run the tweak test to make sure everything checks out ok. Post it here if you have any questions. Tweak test is here: »/tweaks -- Success is measured by effort

1 edit | Re: Speed I noticed they did some network maintenance on my node - never really had any speed problems though. We are connecting to through a new router then onto mountain's regular network. Your node my be next.
You can wait a little, or try calling them about it. If your tests to other sites, such as the cogeco one( »speedtest.cogeco.net/ ) are near 4500, then you are getting near advertised though.
Just tested..

| Re: Anti-spyware, newsgroups etc The Antispam and virus scanners are for the email systems, and are run at the server level. Any email that is sent or received is scanned before reaching the destination (your computer).
For the newsgroups, Mountain offers the tech page located here: »www.mountaincable.net/index.php?···,0,0,1,0 It is through outlook for reading posts (text).
For the second phone line, I'm pretty sure you can get one. I have no idea as to what it costs, but it will have to be run into the Touchstone cable modem as it controls the phone system as well as the battery backup. There are two phone line hookups on the cable modem, so it shouldn't be a problem. You'd have to call them for the pricing though. -- Success is measured by effort. | Bittorrent problems Hello, I have been having some problems recently with bittorrent on mountaincable. I've been using bittorrent for many years and never had the problems I'm getting now. I'm going to explain whats happening:
Whenever I start a new torrent download, I recieve the following error in Azureus almost instantly: "Connection Error (SocketException:Connection reset)" This happens instantly when I start a torrent and it has entirely crippled me for the past week.
I am not using any firewalls or virus scanners. I am using a router, but I unplugged and went straight to the source of the modem and the problem persists. Windows firewall is off. I have reformatted and went from Windows XP that the problem started on, to Windows Vista. I have tried downloading from my laptop but encounter the same problem. But I have noticed something strange. In Azureus you can change your port and test it first before you change to make sure that the connection will work. I can enter in a random port from the standard bittorent ones, to completely random numbers. And it will at first tell me that the connection was "OK!", however when I apply it still fails, and if I go to check that port again, it will tell me that it was reset by peer.
Another interesting fact, is that I can use my laptop to connect to another wireless network thats set up somewhere in my neighbourhood, and I determined that they are also running MountainCable. However I don't have any problems downloading any torrents using the hijacked internet. But then I'll switch back to my own and the same torrents that were working will go back to the socket error.
I tried calling the tech support but the guy I talked to wasn't able to determine the problem. Whats curious though is he got me to download an episode of UFC from torrentspy which he was also downloading to test to see if the problem would persist, but just because I needed it not to work like all the other torrents, it of course worked fine. I don't know whats going on, he wouldn't believe me at that point and just told me that I must have pissed off the trackers I use and that I'm set on some kind of blacklist or something. Trouble is I've gone through trackers I've never used before and the problem still persists so I know thats not the case.
I was wondering if anyone knows of what could be causing this if they've gone through it themselves, or if theres any way that I can get this fixed.
One other thing of note, is this problem originally reared its ugly head about 2 weeks ago. It lasted about 12 hours and then went away for a week and now its back and been there solid for a week.
Help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you. | |

| Mountain On Demand [MOD] Mountain's coming out with a video on demand service. I don't know many details, but it will be available free(IE: without a subscription) to everyone who owns a digital terminal, be it a regular box, PVR, or HD box. There will also be a separate subscription service as well.
The service is due to be launched in September of this year.
As well, more HD channels are coming. As of right now, they have 25, they say close to 30 should be available, when? I don't know, hopefully soon. (National Geographic & HDnet should be part of the new channels)
Now hopefully we can get a speed upgrade too for Express Inet. -- Success is measured by effort. Discover Hamilton, and it's Entertainment.

I'm pretty sure that if you already subscribe to the movie packages (Digital Movies) you don't have to pay for the VOD.
But just to be 100% positive(and so you don't blame me for a large bill ) send an email to info@mountaincable.net or techsupport@mountaincable.net and they should be able to answer that.

| New speeds for internet coming! I sent off my usual email I do every few months to mountaincable requesting that they add a faster internet service package, this time mentioning things like xbox live marketplace's HD movie rental downloads that are going to be starting next month. This is the response I recieved:
"We are currently testing this service on our system as well as increased speeds for our service.
We expect to be able to deliver these services by mid December."
I hope it's something good. Hopefully they will increase their upload speeds along with it, maybe something along the lines of a 10mbps/1mbps service like most other cable companies?

| pissed!
mc-cable(yes mcdonalds!)
Has decided to cut off our cable.
They decided that even though we paid our bill at the beginning of the month, that we owe then 400$, payable immediate for service from last month, this month and next month.
My wife called them this morning, asked about the whole thing.
We were told that instead of it being a cheaper amount, there was an extra 100$, that was because we weren't paying early.
The bill for September October was paid
The balance forward in that bill, was another 250 from October. and beyond.
Every time I get a new bill it is something else.
We were even speaking to the manager, and she refused to help.
