| Any SBCyahoo people from Indiana around?
I'm loving this site and am having a blast looking up tweaks and info, but are there any people close to northwest Indiana/Chicago who have experience/tips for DSL from SBCYahoo?
Thanks in advance!

| Re: Are these correct speeds for SBC Yahoo DSL! You're speed test results were very similar to mine here in Buena Park, CA when I first installed and used my new DSL self-installed service about a month ago. You should expect to about double overal speed performce within a few weeks. If these are your first results, have patience, As long as you are ae not on a "lossy" "last mile" connection, enjoy the STABILITY I currently now experience, compared to my results with the local cable co's alternative. A 2M or better downstream speed is no use to me if it goies up and down like a yo-yo! Be sure to read the FAQ's on this site and SBC Yahoo DSL's support site. | |

How many phones and other devices that plug into phone jacks on that line do you have?

I have no house alarm, and the phones are as follow:
1 in the bedroom 1 in another bedroom 1 in the kitchen 1 in the living room 1 in the living room
I would say about 6-7 telephones throughout the house, +- one. All with dsl filters.

| SBC Yahoo only 1/4 speed I had before? Why?
I am a new subscriber to SBC Yahoo --
It has been a Nightmare ... so far.
I had MSN - who used Qwest broadband. MSN left the business sending their broadband customers to SBC Yahoo. When I had MSN-Qwest, I was paying $49.95 and happy to do so while getting consistent 660 Kbps downstream /256 up. (610 down was the slowest it ever was.) MSN transitioners please read on ---
When I called and ordered SBC Yahoo by phone (which I had to do since I already had ADSL though SBC's Palo Alto CO), I ordered the Deluxe package (768 - 1.5 down / 256 up) just to keep what I already had. When I ordered I was told "no problem" - I could order the Deluxe Package and they would get the line switched over in four days and they did.
I am a web designer and create streaming content. The "medium" speed (650 down) was always a good test of my product for slower broadband connections and I was happy with that. Qwest had a cap with ASI of 640Kbps, but I had a faster connection. I work from home and had the DSL hooked up on a residential line. No filters. This phone line is ONLY used for DSL. The modem arrived quickly - in 2 days. When the line was activated Dec. 19, I got the software installed (with some difficulty on my 3yr old WinMe comp. No problems on the two XP comps).
I was shocked to find my DSL speed was 150 Kbps down / 44 Kbps up !!!! I called for tech support 8 times and finally got escalated to Tier 2. Marginally helpful - but I was told the following:
1) They had me listed for the Basic Package - Max. of 384 down / 128 up. Since my order was entered as Basic Plan (in error), I was told I was stuck with that plan and speed and it could never be increased above 384. I told them it was an error. I ordered the Deluxe plan. They said, "We changed you to Basic. No way to get Deluxe." I explained everything - had 660. "We cannot help you."
2) I was told by several Tier 1 techs that no matter what speed had - I would be capped at 384 down - and it had to do with my distance to the CO. Verbatim- "What speed you used to have with another company over our lines does not matter. With SBC Yahoo, the most you will ever get is 384. That is all we offer. But we will only guarantee you half of that speed (192 Kbps). You are too far away."
Okay --- I know something about this distance issue. SBC computers have me listed at 11300 feet from the CO. I live 9720 feet from the CO (street distance) and 7844 feet from the CO in a straight line. SBC Install tech who installed the line in 2002 gave me the results of their line tests -- at 9211 feet high and 10100 feet at max. impedance. The install techs were delighted with the good line quality. Nothing has changed since then. Great SBC phone voice service. A colleague has SBC Yahoo and he lives 4000 feet further from the CO than I do and he gets 900+Kbps of 1.5Mbps.
I begged the Tier 2 guys to check the line distance and please adjust or override it - since it was wrong. I'd pay anything to get it checked. No go. Carved in stone. The computer distance is never wrong...
I was in a Catch 22. As long as the computer said 'Basic plan' - that's all I would get. If I could get it changed to Deluxe plan, they could escalate my call. If the computer says Basic plan I am capped to that. But the service order people would not change it to Deluxe plan - no matter what - because the order computer now said 11300 feet - and the limit for 768 Kbps was 12000 feet -- but I'm under 12000 ft and I had 660 Kbps !!! I could not get them to listen. The support people would not even talk speeds I was not paying for. It had to say Deluxe Plan on the computer...
3) More calls - finally talking to a "Supervisor" - "Richard", SBC Emp # RI6781. I asked him please review the whole account, line distance and please correct the plan and speed. He said he was looking at my account - I already called a lot and he would not do anything I was not already told. I should not call anymore. SBC was "done talking about it". He said he would do nothing about the plan or speed. He volunteered one thing he probably was not supposed to tell me --- The account showed I was capped at 192 Kbps !!!! "Richard" told me I was lucky to get that speed, because it's all I was getting from SBC DSL and it was "still better than dial-up" (!!!!!!!).
I was furious. I want to complain all the way to SBC management in Texas. I am writing letters to the media. They have to know about this horror show!
I am out of business at 192 Kbps. This will ruin my business.
I got a phone message the next day 12-31-03 - saying "Congratulations. We reviewed your account and could get an increase to a cap of 256Kbps". Sigh.
I don't know what else to do with SBC Yahoo - Except cancel it. Can anyone help?
I can get Comcast cable. I called Covad DSL and 2 other DSL - all checked my number and line distance and they said I can get 1.5Mbps - no problem.
Anyone know what I can do to make this better?
Anyone else forced to find other than MSN and have the same experience?
Or do I just need to dump SBC Yahoo and tell the press?

| Forget about SBC Yahoo
It is impossible to dump SBC Yahoo. The line to my house never functioned (SBC is my phone company, too, but I have been billed for many months and have spent dozens of hours trying to "disconnect" service which was never connected.
The only method to end your service is to call a certain department, which does not answer the phone. To get this number, you will have to wait for hours for some other department to connect you to that department, the number is not published anywhere. You will hang up when, after hours, the disconnect department has not answered. You will write, fax the president, return the equipment with written notification inside the package. You will spend hours waiting for "Customer Service" and talking to "Customer Service," who will try to help get you disconnected and will be unable to do so. You will continue to get charges on your phone bill for many months. You will send written notice back to the billing department. All effort is useless. They will continue to charge you.
The secret number for disconnecting is the "Retention Department," 888-274-9045. Good luck.
There are competitors, out there. Do not start with these people. Take the time to find an alternative!!!

This is right, I work for Sykes the company that SBC out source the first tech tech support too. Sykes is moving all there centers to India, so soon the first person your are going to be speaking to is someone with broken english, with 2 weeks of training.....How do I know??? Like a fool, I when and help trained them under the guise that it would get them up and running faster. Any ways, let me tell you a few little rules.
1. First Tier support can't do a lot about your connection, our hands are tied. HOWEVER,
The Retention Department 888-274-9045 can do everything, from cancel your service, to getting to a tech visit out TODAY!, to refunds to New modems, anything you want. all you have to do is tell them your going to cancel.
2. When you get the first tier agent on the phone, and they politely say; "Thank you for choosing SBC internet Services, my name is Joe, May I please have the DSL phone number & the Name on the account"......This is something that is drilled into us EVERYDAY WE WORK!!!!!"
Give them your DSL phone number and name, let them do the next part about asking if they may call you by your first name. When they get to the part about How may I help you. Ask for STS or Second Teir Support. The Min you ask for STS you have just tied there hands. They have to by SBC protocol fill out what we call a STS template and warm transfer you to STS. You don't have to tell them what it's about, just that your would like to speak with STS. STS is really SBC and not an out source company. NEVER NEVER ASK First tier for a supervisor.....If you do, you don't get a supervisor. you get the tech sitting in the next cube. Supervisor or "TM's" as they are called NEVER Take calls nor talk to customer's.
Other things to remember, first tier can release the call or hang up on you ONLY if.... 1. you a yelling at them. 2. you cuss at them. they have to give to 3 warnings first so you can get away with it twice. after the second time remember ask for STS NOT a supervisor.

| Re: first few hours good now misc. glitches I think I have the problems fixed at this point. For the graphics issue I restore a previous internet explorer version and that worked.
The hanging/delay issue seems to be fixed as well. I got the advice from here actually:
"Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? if so, change that to Define IP address and enter 192.168.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks".
So now Im at about 1200/202

| DSL Filter Problems I started using SBC DSL last month, and have an interesting problem. I've gone through 3 of the DSL filters SBC provided. The first one worked for about a month, then quit. I knew it quit because both my telephone and my DSL line were suddenly dead. Swapping out the filter fixed the problem. The second one lasted about a week, then the same thing happened. The third one didn't work at all (out of the box). The fourth one is installed and working now.
Does anyone have any thoughts on why I might be going through filters like this? Any suggestions on where to look, or what to try?
As background, I installed the filter in the home's phone box, and ran a separate line from the filter to the computer room. So I've got a single filter for the house. The phone line side runs to all the phones in the house. The DSL side runs over separate wires to the computer room. Any reason why that setup would be the problem?
Thanks | |

| Re: DSL Filter Problems Hmmm i am running the same setup as you and have not had a problem as of yet, but i have had dsl only for a month so far anyways.
Is the filter outside of the house or inside? if it's outside maybe a problem with moisture etc. Or i know that there are some phone that run off of the telephone wires voltage and don't need to be plugged in, maybe if you have enough of these type of phones it's too much for the circuitry to handle the voltage passing through that filter.

| Re: DSL Filter Problems The phone box is outside the house, but I'm in southern California where we really don't have weather. The box is well sealed against water, so it's not getting wet inside. It is subject to temperature swings from a low of 40 degrees, to a high of 80 degrees (this time of year).
I do have 3 phones that operate off line voltage, rather than their own electrical supply. However my understanding is that they don't actually draw any power unless off hook. I rarely use those particular phones, so they were probably never even removed from the hook the entire time. I never use more than one of them at a time.
Still looking for more suggestions.....Thanks

| I would like to take a moment And say hello. My name is Matt and I am an official rep from SBC that supports customers here on www.broadbandreports.com. There are currently 4 of us who provide official support for SBC on this web site.
Up until recently we primarily supported users in the separate regional forums, and still do. This new SBC/Yahoo forum caught us a little off guard, and the online team has not been very active here as of yet. Neither has the user base of other customers who are familiar with this site, with our service, and enjoy helping out other users in trouble. What I am getting at is that you will probably find a faster response, and a larger response, if you post in the regional forum appropriate to you.
This forum is still, under construction. The regional forums are much more suited currently to help, with established FAQ's and a large user/employee base.
I would like to invite you to peruse the regional forums, maybe post your questions in whichever one is best suited to your location.

If you are using WinME, you can block it with ZAP if you feel this is an invasion of your privacy or even disable it by unchecking it the Startup tab in MSCONFIG. I've not uninstalled it or had to deal with it in XP.

| Hello and welcome to the sbcyahoo forum!!
I David, aka Beach boy....
I mainly and primarily work on ameritech issues, pacbell, SWBT, and SNET on occasion...
I hang and base myself out of the Ameritech forum, but I used to live in STL so I am not too far from jumping the river either.
I have been a network center tech for almost 4 years with SBC and am here to help...
You can get a hold of me 2 ways....
-> IM requires site registration- free or premium for $10 gives you a lot of features.
-> E-mail you can e-mail me direct at helprequest@sbcglobal.net and just let me know what is going on..
Do keep in mind I am rather busy, do not take offense if I don't respond rather quickly... I also work on executive escalations from time to time, and recently been working on a project to benefit all techs in this building. This recent development is only temporary and I should be back up to full speed soon..
I usually announce in the Ameritech forum if I am going to be off and with RadioDoc and lev in the ameritech forum they usually stick it for me for all to see. I also keep an eye on alerts as well and usually can post when we have an outage that affects a lot of people. -- Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. | Wireless access to internet issue D link Router: DI-713P NetGear Wireless Card: 802.11b MA401
Need help getting my laptop (Win2000) to work with the netgear wireless card (802.11b - Model MA 401) and D-link DI-713P router.
Moved homes and recently got SBC Yahoo DSL service. After installing the SBC software haven't been able to connect to the internet using the wireless LAN card. Can connect through a physical cable but not through the wireless card. Have uninstalled all of the SBC software, reconfigured the router settings multiple times but to no success. Even tried with a new router (netgear) but have had no success. My roommate brought a new Microsoft LAN card and he can connect to the internet on the SBC connection without any problems. Hence I suspect something in the SBC software has ruined my laptop settings for wireless access. The NetGear card shows good connection and when I try to ping the router IP address, at times it has data loss and other times, it has no data loss.
Have tried SBC tech support but to no luck. Any ideas??? Thanks for your help.

| What you should know about the Connection Manager. DO NOT install the connection manager on your computer. Why you ask? Because regardless what SBC or the FTS (First tier support) tech tells you it's spyware. FTS can't tell you what the software really is, because we would lose our jobs, however. FTS has a few tools that I will explain for you. we have a tool called the AMT Tool, which will allow us to see every email you send out, everything in your yahoo briefcase, everything in your yahoo photos. it allows us to log in as you without your password and act on your behalf with your account. Just ask a FTS if they can long in with the AMT tool to make sure everything in your email is working right. ask them how many emails do you see. they will tell you.
kool tool number two.....the "SMART ISSUE VIEWER!!!!!" what does this do? It hooks up with your connection manager, and allows the tech to see everything in your PC or MAC. YES EVERYTHING!!!!! from printers, and web cams, to software, and pictures. and email that you have downloaded.
Just thought you would like to know.

Not exactly buddy. Conncetion Manager is not available for Mac's. Also AFAIK, for SMart Issue Viewer to work you have to submit the ticket number and give that to FTS.
CCCMtech can probably give more info on this.
Also why not register, quit hiding....

| What you should know about SBC Tech Support. Ok, SBC Tech support is divided to 3 major tiers.
FTS or First tier Tech Support is not SBC, they are a outsource company called Sykes which is based out of Tampa, Fla If you call from Pacbell, Swbell, or NVbell.
and Convegys with you call from Ameritech or SNET.
STS (second tier support) which is really SBC and TTS (third tier support) or NOC... Who is GOD OF SBC.
Ok FTS..... FTS is the "first line of defence" yes that is what we are trained that we are. we are the ones that should calm the customer down and make sure the problem is not on the customer's side. most of the time FTS hands are tied. if you run a router they can't help you. even if you buy the router from SBC. also we make $6.50 start, and all out jobs are being moved to India, and the Philippines. so they are not easely motivated.
Rules about FTS. 1. NEVER, NEVER, NEVER ask for a supervisor. If you do, you will not get a supervisor, you get the tech in the very next cube, saying they are a supervisor. TM's as they are called, or Team managers, NEVER talk to the customer. they will get other techs to talk to the customers. so that will do you no good.
2. FTS can not hang up on you with out a warning. they also can't hang up on you unless your are screaming at them or cussing at them. they have to give you 3 warnings before release you. EXCEPTIONS..... If you mention a lawsuit, or the media, or threaten the FTS agent with bodily harm that will get you disconnected with out a warning.
3. FTS HAS TO USE A CALL SCRIPT Fts agents have to say the same thing every time. in the same order. PLEASE let them say their scripts. if you don't it just upset them because then they will fail "AMS" agent min standards, and get a write up.
4. After the opening script, if you tell the FTS agent you want to speak with a STS Agent. they have to warm transfer you to them. it might take a min or two because they have to fill out a tech template, but they HAVE to transfer you, and STS who is SBC. CAN NOT refuse the call.
5. If you call more the 6 times in 15 days, you are labeled a chronic caller. which then and there the FTS can't touch you. they will tell you that your are chronic and have to speak with a internet specialist which really is STS.
STS......Can't tell you I am not them NOC...Again GOD OF SBC.

| Why Do I Have To Upgrade To SBC/Yahoo?? Man, they constantly bug me, with tons and tons of emails and letters. I get the CD in the mail too.
As it is if you look at some of my posts, I am not totally thrilled with SBC as it is, since I don't get anywhere near the speeds my neighbours get.
However, I do not want a new browswer, parental controls, a connection manager, a pop up blocker etc, etc.
I have all I would like, but I would like to have my mailbox increased in size, and my personal web space increased too, which they told me I can only have if I upgrade.
I always set up my connections manually. I don't like using any type of CD software, which includes who knows what.
So please someone tell me what if any are my options??
I run Win XP Pro I run through a Linksys Router
Thanks. -- I Never Use Signatures.

| Well, that would be all fine and dandy if the the uninstall option in the software actually uninstalled something. Or even during the install if you choose not to install something, it would actually not install that part. I'm beginning to think that the only way to get rid of everything installed by the SBC disk is to do a system restore to before I used it. Which might not be a bad idea anyway. | |
