Re: Spam/Virus Hardware Launch....

There should now be a noticeable difference in E-mail Spam being blocked as of yesterday. We will be continuing the IronPort test for the next month and should it be successful we'll be keeping this setup permanently and having it automatically included with our Internet Services!

It was strange, because between March 15 to March 20th, I had two email subscriptions that I did not receive.

The one subscription, I get one email every day. I had 5 days that I did not get that email.
The other subscription, sends email 3 times a day. It was quite until yesterday too. They both seem to be back to normal today.

Now, other email subscriptions I had were fine during that same period.

The spam filter ALMOST explains this.

Re: Spam/Virus Hardware Launch....

Hi dchdrake,

Were you subscribed to our spam/virus guard program before the 20th Launch? If so, maybe the previous program was blocking it but if you weren't, there would be no reason to not have received it.

nah.... we're not overdoing this time like with the Juniper equipment.... We've installed setup with the C60 which would be the 600's earlier version. We'd researched it a little and being as the C60 was designed for ISPs in mind, and the obvious savings by not buying latest/greatest, that it would be the better bang for our buck. In either case, the brightmail stuff is most of the magic and from there the C60 is in place for the brute force to handle heavier load times....

Regards,

BASIC ON/QC DSL SERVICES FACTS/INFO/FAQ

(note: this applies mainly to DSL customers in Ontario and Quebec)

BASIC DSL SERVICES FACTS/INFO/FAQ FOR PRETTY WELL ALL ISPs:

CAN ISPs PROVIDE DSL LITE BASIC (AS SYMPATICO DOES)?
- NO – ISPs Can only provide 256k (going up to 512k soon), 3Meg and 5Meg residential services (6Meg biz).

ARE ALL ISPs RESELLING BELL CANADA?
- NO - All ISPs dealing directly with Bell Nexxia have their own network infrastructure (ie: transit, routers, etc...)

DO ISPs HAVE TO GO THROUGH BELL IN ONTARIO/QUEBEC?
- YES - All ISPs using Bell DSLAMs must go through Bell's copper and authentication cloud in order to provide DSL

DO ISPs PAY FOR DRY COPPER?
- YES - All ISPs must pay for dry copper services (pricing is based on band rates A to G)

DOES BELL PROVIDE ISPs WITH SLA SERVICE?
- NO - Bell is only obligated to a Service Level Objective (SLO) to the ISPs (not an SLA)

HOW QUICKLY CAN WE EXPECT BELL TO RESPOND TO ISPs ON BELL TICKETS?
- 48+hrs – Bell has a 48hr SLO waiting period before ISP staff can escalate. From there a 12ish hour period can be expected before further escalations, and so on and so forth

DO ISPs PAY LESS IF PROFILES ARE LOWERED ON CONNECTIONS?
- NO - ISPs can not control the connections speeds at lesser costs (ie: if bell gives ISP 3Meg, ISP can't shape to 1Meg and charge 1/3 less... ISP pays 3Meg rate and the same, if an ISP requests a profile change lowering the speed of a client lower to stabilize a connection…. Original rates per original speed apply.)

DO ISPs REQUIRE ADDITIONAL INFO TO PROVIDE SERVICE TO NON-BELL LINES?
- YES - ISPs require accurate Circuit information on 3rd party telephone providers in order to provide DSL service over the Bell copper.

CAN CLIENTS CALL BELL AND RECEIVE DETAILS ON ISP/NEXXIA SUPPORT EFFORTS?
- NO - Clients 'can not' call Bell Nexxia as the ISP is the client of Bell Nexxia, not the client (therefore information provided to a client will not be accurate/consistent... ISP/Nexxia database isn't the same as Bell Canada/Sympatico nor is the phone number to discuss problems).

CAN SYMPATICO/BELL SOLICIT ISPs CLIENTS
- YES - Sympatico/Bell can solicit 3rd party ISP clients and is only obligated to a 90 day waiting period (Bell has an internal policy of communicating with all the households in Ontario and Quebec 4 times per year! - Might even be Canada wide).

CAN THE PRICES GET ANY LOWER FOR 3 MEG DSL SERVICES?
-DOUBT IT– Bell gets the lion’s share of a DSL account! Currently an ISP can expect to pay Bell on average between $21 and $24 per account per month for 3Meg service. This excludes bandwidth, hardware, network, HR, software, etc…., so, many accounts are required to make ends meet on $30/month accounts. Unless Bell drops the rates this will likely be as low as it gets.

HOW MANY DAYS CAN YOU EXPECT TO WAIT FOR DSL?
- 5+ DAYS – The ISP places the order into the Bell Nexxia portal and a minimum 5 ‘business’ days can be expected to wait. ISPs must wait at least 5 business days before opening ‘any’ tech support related tickets on new orders.

CAN ISPs INSTALL DSL SERVICE IN THE BELL CENTRAL OFFICES?
- NO – Only Bell authorized personnel are allowed to do so, therefore ISPs can not accelerate the install process.

PROBLEMS IN SPECIFIC AREAS – ISP OR BELL/CUSTOMER?
- BELL/CUSTOMER! – If a client has problems in a certain city but is A1 everywhere else (often seen in the forums), then at 99% of the time the problem is on the Bell or customer end. There are very few circumstances where this is not the case.

CAN AN AREA BE DOWN WITHOUT THE ISPs KNOWLEDGE?
- YES – ISP feeds for providing DSL services come in over VLAN, provided by Bell. ISP can only monitor feeds within its realm so anything prior to it is monitored by Bell only. As a result, if a Central Office, or even an entire City is down it is likely the ISP will be notified by the client before Bell.

WHY DO MOST ISPs BLOCK PORTS?
- BLACKLISTING – Nearly all major ISPs block certain ports (in particular port25) in order to lower the risk of having their main IPs black listed. A MAJOR problem for ISP is being blacklisted as it can sometimes take days before being removed…. (we’re likely to go there shortly as it’s near impossible to make spam companies happy without it…. They’re just too picky… with reason! No one likes spam.).

DO ISPs MONITOR CONTENT OR KNOWINGLY HOST ILLEGAL CONTENT?
- NO – ISP simply provide a connection service and for those who use email a temporary holding ground for emails. The only things ISPs track are IPs to identify internet access history (ie: we can tell when a specific individual was online).

Chance of CS;S server?

Any chance teksavvy could donate an old server for use as a CounterStrike:Source server? It would be a fun project for the IT guys to setup....and everyone could have fun there....

but if it's too much, don't worry about it.....

Hi Jonathan,

Did you call in to talk with anyone at our office? We've got a CS server (Dual Xeon Box) running right now... Call in and talk with Bill (877-779-1575) or James for details.

Re: Chance of CS;S server?

Thanks for the update Rocky, you may want to consider putting it as a sticky in this forum and posting it under the tools section on the teksavvy.com website (so people actually know about it). I will phone in tomorrow to find out the ip.

Side note: I would consider updating your links in the tools section because everything under the "downloadable helpers" is out of date. I would link to the original url ie, »www.macromedia.com/downloads/ (although it seems adobe has changed their url but one character, those bastards...)

Last but not least: I would have a link to firefox, you have links for plugins within netscape, but firefox has taken that share of that market.....I don't know anyone in my family who still uses netscape now.

Re: Chance of CS;S server?

Hi Jonathan,

Thanks for the information with regards to some of the tools... I'll be sure to pass them on.

We've currently avoided advertising the game server stuff as it's something we've been playing with at the moment... We'd rather get to know it inside out before jumping into it..... In any case, we're slowly letting leak out and should have a gaming site up shortly.

Google's in my HOUSE!

Absolutely amazing.

When logged into TekSavvy my pings to www.google.com come in at 8 (eight) milliseconds. With pingtimes like that it feels like I have a Google datacenter in the next room. :/

Are such low pingtimes a consequence of
1) Google taking care to make themselves 'close' to me (the user) {assumed: obviously yes}
2) TekSavvy peering at/with Torix, which places me really, really close to backbone pipes?

I love TekSavvy (a big, wet kiss to y'all)!

Now using Peer1 as Primary!

Hey all,

I was just waiting until things were finished being negotiated before telling everyone.....

We've gone through much of the discussions with multiple providers and based on Peer1's performance over the years as well as their willingness to work with us for the future we're now going to go with Peer1 across the board with Cogent as a roll-over/back-up! So at some point throughout the day today all customers should be 100% over Peer1!

troubleshooting DSL problems

Hi,

I was wondering now Teksavvy can negotiate the troubleshooting of line problems (i.e. low synch, dirty lines etc).

i.e. my dsl line is reportedly supposed to be 3 meg, but I have been reduced to 1meg synch due to line issues (it isn't my inside wiring, i checked)

who do I go to? calling bell wouldn't work (as i wouldn't be a sympatico customer) what does the ISP do to rectify these types of situations?

thanks,
Michael

Re: troubleshooting DSL problems

Hi Michael,

Call in to the office and the guys will look at your line stats and go through the options with you. The reason I suggest going this route is, as much as it might be a pain, it might save you money as, if Bell makes their way out to your house and finds the problem to be you, they'd charge you for it.

... on the other hand, if you're absolutely sure the problem isn't you, tell the guys and they'll organise a dispatch to your place!

We've joined the VoIP Game!!!

Hey gang,

We've now playing in the VoIP game!

In order to ensure quality we've made it so that only TekSavvy Premium (over Peer1) could have the service, but we'd give a rebate for those wanting to keep the Cogent ($8/month) login.

In any case, head to the TSI site and have fun... the rates are very competitive as you'll see!

New Teksavvy customer needs PROPER install instructions.

I've got my speedtouch 780WL modem and it looks really nice but I am tired of just looking at it and would like some help to get up and running with my dry loop DSL/VOIP combo.

Not looking for "you just plug it in and configure it"
kind of instructions, I've had some of that already and
it really doesn't help.

I was told my modem would be preconfigured.
When I received notice of my phone number I realized
I was given the wrong area code. Then number was changed
to correct area code.

Does this mean my modem needs to be re programmed?

When BELL activates a dry DSL loop does this mean the signals will be coming on the first pair so I will not have to rewire my jack, or is it the second pair?

If it is the second pair does BELL have to provide a demark jack near my computer or do I have to use my own splitter/rewire my jack.

Does BELL have to confirm the dry DSL loop works to the jack near my equipment or only as far as the basement of my apartment building?

How do I know when the dry loop DSL service has been activated? (keep in mind I can't call anywhere for support)

What does a fast busy signal mean?

Re: New Teksavvy customer needs PROPER install instructions.

I'll try to help you out as best I can (I'm just a Teksavvy customer and ole telecom hag).

I assume that you are presently on the dry DSL-connected line and can browse the net but VoIP is not working.

I was told my modem would be preconfigured.
When I received notice of my phone number I realized
I was given the wrong area code. Then number was changed
to correct area code.

Does this mean my modem needs to be re programmed?
Probably not.

When BELL activates a dry DSL loop does this mean the signals will be coming on the first pair so I will not have to rewire my jack, or is it the second pair?
Should be the first pair (aka inside pair, aka red/green).

Does BELL have to confirm the dry DSL loop works to the jack near my equipment or only as far as the basement of my apartment building?
Probably just to the building's basement. The location where Bell's responsibility for correct wiring & signal ends is called the demarc(ation point).

How do I know when the dry loop DSL service has been activated? (keep in mind I can't call anywhere for support)
If you can get on the internet then the dry DSL is up and good.

One thing that you'll need to see working is a green LED on the sync indicator on the modem (or some similar indication).

What does a fast busy signal mean?
Technically, that *fast* busy signal means 're-order', aka you are being instructed to re-dial the number because the call couldn't be completed for some reason (this is a general telecom feature). The possible reasons your call failed to complete are many.

Have you tried emailing teksavvy support?

Re: New Teksavvy customer needs PROPER install instructions.

Hey BellVictim,

thanks for the reply, I just finished talking with teksavvy.
Everything seems OK now. Part of the problem was not knowing if I needed the teksavvy download manager or whatever it is and if I needed to run the install CD that comes with the modem (I've been a high speed user since before Rogers switched to DHCP and cut their speed in half without telling anyone ... I should know by now NEVER USE THE CD). I was also sent emails from teksavvy telling me that I need to go to the web to activate VOIP service then I was given ID and passwords which were "needed to access my DSL service". Didn't know if I needed special DSL hardware from BELL. Just a lot of questions that would have been avoided by sending a list of steps to hooking up the modem and rebooting the PC etc. It really was easy after all is said and done but if you don't have any instructions at all it might never come together.

Instructions should read something like this:
for users of dry dsl loop/VOIP combo -
- wait until no dial tone from BELL
- unplug phone from wall and connect modem
- connect wires according to the diagram in CD software removing the ethernet cable from your old cable modem (in my case) and plug into the ethernet on the speedtouch modem
- run ipconfig or winipcfg to get your ethernet cards IP address and write it down
- reboot and again check your IP (release / renew works but you may not be abe to browse or email - in my case)
- note the IP address should be different and since your IP configuration in network settings is set to DHCP and the ethernet card is plugged only to the new modem then you know the new IP was assigned by the speedtouch modem
- remove all devices from all telephone jacks in the house
- ensure the phone is directly connected to the speedtouch
- turn on the speedtouch and wait a few minutes for all the diagnostics to complete
- observe the LEDs to see voice DSL internet etc. and that's an indication you should be able to use the phone and browse the internet

It is as easy as plug it in and it works but don't forget you need to reboot to get the IP from the modem and BELL must have done their part as well as Teksavvy in the first place otherwise you might end up banging your head against the wall wondering what you did wrong when all along it was BELL that didn't activate the dry DSL at the same time as the disconnect (bastards).

I'm starving.

VoIP & DRY DSL Combo... TekSavvy vs. VIF

I have a dream about getting rid of Bell phone line and any business with them, so I need unlimited ADSL and VoIP phone...

Guys, could you explain me, please, why should I not go to VIF - they have the same bundle, but with better prices ($10/mo less for the bundle) and conditions (Unlimited Long Distance anywhere in Canada and the United States.). Plus, they have 100GB/mo soft caps rather than yours fixed caps. (Well, I think it's not a problem to use your unlimited adsl in this case...) And there is no setup fee too for this bundle.

The only thing I do not like about VIF is, during pick hours their connection can be really slow. Your speeds look better and more stable.

Not having caps these days is good if I need to watch online TV, for example.... My wife is at home and she can get them rolling all day long... Era of online television is coming, guys

Re: VoIP & DRY DSL Combo... TekSavvy vs. VIF

Because you don't want an Internet access from VIF ...

I had been with VIF for two years. All worked great but the last months was terribles... Slow speed, bad pings, and technical support just know to say "the problem is your modem/pc/router/network/not our fault".

So, I just cancelled and switched to another ISP (not Teksavvy (I just have a DSL login with them), because Toronto is too far from Quebec city and I got +20ms in my pings.. another story ) and no speed/ping problem since.

An about soft caps, VIF use only Cogent network. When cogent die (occured about 5 times in two years I think), you lost Internet access. So, you have the choice of 100GB soft capped with Cogent, unlimited with Cogent or 100GB with Peer1. I would not choose choice #1...

I share that dream. I have about 5 months left on my contract with bell. However, I plan on going one step further and cutting their useless outdated wires from my home , so that leaves me with one choice unfortunately for a phone and internet provider, Videotron.

Tracert to primus.ca
Hi,
I just switched over to the teksavvy 5mb dsl connection. I had some problems with speed but with some tweaking (and hopefully bell checking out their end) I should be okay. However my latenany is really really bad! When I first got the connection they were okay, but after tweaking and a few days later it went really bad.
I have attached a tracert to primus.ca, as you can see my first hop takes FOREVER! Any help would be appreciated!

why is this forum hidden under "T"?

Why is the teksavvy forum so well hidden? I mean it practically owns the Canadian Broadband forum. Why isn't it under "Canadian"? TY to the person pointing this forum out btw....

Do you have to pay to have a forum on dsl-reports or pay to have it under the Canadian heading?

Flashing modem firmware for a st780wl

Anyone know how to reflash a modem manually?
My SIP entries are not registering.
I modified the name to display field in one of my SIP entries and pressed apply (while on the phone) and it cut me off and the web interface window blanked out and hung.
Ever since my voice services have not registered. Tried reset every which way but loose - nogo - seems to clear out my DSL settings and Telephony configure settings but leaves the Telephony expert configure data intact. Teksavvy tech recreated my account completely on his end and I tried again with the hard reset and making new config for Telephony and the VOIP still doesn't register.

CLI documentation states:
Reboot the modem to initiate the SW upgrade.

New software available on a remote LAN host will be uploaded to the modem.

What if it's not new? What if I just want to reflash to clear a SIP problem?

I've already got the firmware file 5.4.0.B_SIP but can't see how to use it unless it resides on an FTP server somewhere. Then I think the upgrade commands might apply.

I've been without my phone for almost 2 days now!! HELP.

Bit Torrent Notices

I read that Teksavvy forwards legal notices regarding possible copyright infringements from using bit torrent. I'm just curious if Teksavvy does this to protect itself, or is it possible that it thinks people want the information. Can a user say don't send them? Has Teksavvy considered telling the firm that it won't send them and that they can find the end-users itself - it has no legal obligation to forward mail?
