New Customer report

Just switched from Videotron to Teksavvy.
Received the modem and stuff withing a couple of days. Ordered Dec 26th activated on Jan 3rd.
So far, so good, I'm getting

I was a customer for 7 years at Videotron, will I miss the speed ? Probably a little, but at $30 a month with unlimited caps that price is very hard to beat.

Switch

Currently using Net3.ca (was Gosonic), paying $33/month for 3MB service I believe.

Get this fastest rating:

I have a GS8100 modem.

Will I notice a difference in speed switching to Tek's 5MB service? Will I need a new modem?

Re: Switch

Hi Gladman911,

Not sure if there will actually be a difference as Bell controls the sync rate. Is Net3.ca a reseller of someone? The only way it would make a difference was if they were over capacity on their network.

They are a reseller...and lately their LD and internet seems to be slower since taking over from Gosonic.com

Anyway, if I signed up for your 5MG service, would I use the same existing modem I have?

Providing your line can handle 5MB then yah, it will, if my information is correct it will handle up to 8mbps, I may be wrong, I didn't see anywhere where it mentioned it also handled ADSL2+ so 8mbps would be my best guess

you might have to do some reconfiguring, if the modem also works as a router...

Call in to the office to have your line stats pulled. From there they should be able to give you an idea of what you can handle, based on your current infrastructure (ie: current wiring, etc...).

One thing to note... If you're over the 3KM range, you should consider a different modem as at that range the BB0060 doesn't perform very well.

Woohoo, another MASSIVE slowdown.

Yes thats right folks, another massive slowdown for me.

Normally my connection is kicking down around 4200kbps and up 650kbps.

Right now I'm getting a whopping 900/500. This happens about once, maybe twice a week. I call TekSaavy and they say that they have no reports of technical difficulty in my area (Kingston).

This is kinda getting annoying, since when the internet works it's really blazing fast.

One last thing, I have a question about my email.

I want to use outlook express, but I want my incoming mail server, and outgoing mail server to be different. Since the teksaavy email requires password authentication to use the outbound mail, I'm running into alotta problems.

Any suggestions?

This question is irrelevant in this forum as I highly doubt TekSavvy is able to answer another ISP's question (Montreal-DSL.com). However, another fellow user may be able to shine you some info in the Canadian Broadband.

I haven't had any speed issues with TekSavvy from Montreal and I have been transferring most of the day. Is the speed problem only affecting TekSavvy login or your real ISP (Montreal-DSL.com) too? How about speedtest from both during those "problems"?

Why is this a problem? You simply have to set «my server requires authentication» in your server properties and set the associated password: «Log on using» instead of «use same setting as incoming» since its a different server.

Teksavvy in the cable market -- anytime soon/ever?

Just as the title reads...if a company such as 3web can do it -- oh man --....what's from stopping teksavvy in joining that race? My mom's house is a little far from the CO and she doesn't want me touching her landline...

Any chance of this happening?

Jonathan

Re: Teksavvy in the cable market -- anytime soon/ever?

Hi Jonathan,

There's a very good chance that if we're jumping in that it will be in the next 12 to 24 months. The problem is in the costs. Cable causes network charges to be on a per POI, exclusive of users, which could mean something like something to the magnitude of having to add a 100Meg service per city, which doesn't make much financial sense and why 3Web has a mix of 3Web and Rogers network all over.... The CRTC is working on a small group of POIs for resellers but I'm not sure it's there just yet. As a result we might start implementing options in more dense areas, in order to get our feet wet and go from there. Additionally, the costs have to be similar as, if we cannibalise any of our DSL clients to Cable, we need to have similar margins.

More to come in the coming months.

Regards,

Rocky

Re: Teksavvy in the cable market -- anytime soon/ever?

well if you end up offering it at the yonge/yonge blvrd area (border of toronto/north york), you'll have at least one customer -- eheh!
The thing that also attracts me to this idea of you offering cable is that you could/(hopefully would) offer profiles with higher upload rates than the standard 800kbps, right? Maybe say...2mbps?
If you did that...and advertised as the most available standard internet service with the highest upload rate...I think you would have a lot of takers in toronto at least!

In any case thanks again for everything,

Re: Teksavvy in the cable market -- anytime soon/ever?

Hi Jonathan987,

Been discussing with some of the cable companies lately and here are my prelim findings.

We'd be looking at approximately a $7,500 to $15,000 investment per point of interconnect to setup (excludes hardware of $5,000 to $10,000/POI) as well as a monthly of about $2,000 to carry a 100Meg connection to provide each POI. This exclude the monthly per user of about $20ish/month with an install fee that ranges between $20 and $70 for residential and around $150/biz.

Rogers, videotron, Cogeco, Persona each have around 40+ points of interconnect.

So, this would be as a result around 150+ points of interconnect.......

So, doing the math here's what we'd be faced with in order to provide Cable Internet in Ontario & Quebec:

- Setup Investment (at $7,500+/POI) = $1,125,000 to $2,250,000
- Hardware (Router card + servers) = $750,000 to $1,500,000
- 100Meg connection per POI = $300,000+/month

Investment in first year, excluding HR/additional transit/advertising/etc, from $5.5M to $7.5M. All this investment and we've barely even gotten out of the gates yet!

I think the CRTC needs to rethink on what the CABLECOs are feeding them as far as costs, as, there's no way anyone will be able to resell cable in anything more than the larger centres, and even then!

Regard,

Rocky

Re: Teksavvy in the cable market -- anytime soon/ever?

Hi Rocky, your most recent post got me to remember an old story on /. about a guy who put forward that all the (communications) infrastructure should be (I can't remember the exact term) publicly owned or something, and that companies would only be able to offer SERVICE over the lines, at an equal cost to all the players.

It was something about how if no one company owned all the lines, then they couldn't unbalance the market with monopolistic business practices, and that infrastructure would actually be better maintained, and that the cost of laying new cables or such would be absorbed by the community or something. I totally forget the details, but that was the gist.

With the costs you just mentioned in mind (I know nothing about the business, but the numbers honestly look staggering), what's your feeling about this idea?

Re: Teksavvy in the cable market -- anytime soon/ever?

That's just it, I was taken back by the numbers also.... I just starting to sit back and think about the options now. I was under the assumption the TPIA that the CRTC put forward would fix the "don't touch my cookie jar" mentality that the Cable Companies seem to suffer. As much as people complain about Bell's monopolistic mentality, Cable companies were actually given free rain in each of their respective spaces to not be touched by anyone else. As a result, now that the technologies have flip somewhat on their heads, to allow Internet over Cable, the CRTC is accepting costs that are way over-bloated as costs to allow a reseller/wholesaler into the market place.

If this is how it stays all that will happen is that the Cable Companies, even though they currently enjoy a small speed advantage, are going to soon enough feel the wrath of "power by number". DSL has much more globalised reach at the moment and once they're done investing into the rural roads and start focusing on bringing higher speeds to the public (in come Optimax type products) and if an IPTV solution can stick or at least a Satellite/DSL play can be made... CableCOs really need to rethink the me-me-me attitude!

PS - I've got a good idea of who you speak of for the community type solution but it would be a hard sale to do so.... too much to lose. It's kind of like trying to remove more taxes out of the gas rates.

The individual does have one point however in having things be more of a centralised play.... The delivery mechanism for the internet is quickly becoming as important as the hydro plants. No power, no business.... No Internet, no business.... So to remove the greed factor from this portion of things might very well bring on more innovative solutions!

Hi Gang,

I often verify different spelling for TekSavvy whenever I can think of doing so (for example teksavy is a common mistake) but searching rocky doesn't give me much results.

So, if anyone would like my two cents on any given topic, outside the TekSavvy forum page, please feel free to PM me the link/thread to which you'd like me to respond to.

Similar plan to Bell's Ultra

I would like to switch from Bell Ultra to a similar plan with Teksavvy. The plan is $29.95, correct?
I have a few questions:
Can I bring my own modem?
Are there any installation fees?
Is the service caped?

Re: Similar plan to Bell's Ultra

Wow, really fast reply from Teksavvy (under 20 minutes) so I'll just paste it here if other people are looking for the same info:

If you currently get Bell's 5Meg program you would get the same with us.

We don't charge any installation fees with the DSL program and you would definitely be able to use your own modem (no problem!).

You would have two options for the DSL...

Option #1: Capped service (100GB) which would go over the Peer1 network and is deemed to be more performing (great for gamers).

Option #2: Unlimited service which would go over the Cogent network and is deemed to be a little less performing but great for heavy downloaders!

They both cost $29.95/month!

Question about Torrents

Hi Guys,

Finally my net was put up to speed yesterday, I was enjoying downloading at over 400kbps. This is great.

Except today my speeds went to crap. I start up my torrent program, my ping goes through the roof, downstream speed plummets, I have everything port forwarded properly.

Any suggestions what it might be?

Right now I'm downloading stuff by bitorrent at a whopping 45kbps. I'm not griping because I'm getting something for 'free' but, I still want to try and cure all the kinks in my internet.

It seems whenever my modem cuts out or something silly happens I end up having to fix a bunch of stuff. I have a speedstrem 6520 modem thats overly complicated to use, how much is it to lease a modem from TekSavvy, and how long does it take to get?

Teksavvy login suddenly stops working...

Hi everyone, I just recently signed up with Teksavvy dsl internet and the transition from Sympatico went very smoothly - but at about 7pm tonight our login/password for Teksavvy suddenly stopped working - we are still able to connect with our Sympatico one that hasn't expired yet, but whenever I try to switch it back to Teksavvy the modem's log (Speedstream 4200) reports that Authentication failed - I plan on calling tomorrow to check anyway, but does anybody have any idea why this might happen for no apparant reason? Thanks!

No more excusses.

I'm shopping for a new ISP and I have some questions for Rocky, but first I'd like to outline a little of my Internet history:

1988-1999 POTS = 115bps - 28.8kbs
1999-2001 Pair-bonded POTS = 90kbs
2001-2002 Rogers highspeed = connection kept dropping out
2002-2004 Bell Sympatico = 30GB CAP, $120 Bills
2004-2007 Rogers highspeed = 70kbs average

The latest nonsense with Rogers is a steady decrease in performance. I called them to downgrade my service level, in part to identify why there was a decrease at all, and just to see if my throughput would in fact decrease: nothing changed. I called them the following month to drop my service level even further, still no perceivable change in performance. Well, the next service level down was no service at all, so when I called to disconnect, the CSR expressed shock that I had systematically reduced my service plan in response to poor performance. (I guess they're not engineers)

So, enough history, on with what I want and the questions:

I want, and am willing to pay for, an internet connection that can bear two independant VOIP connections and three independant streaming TV connections and still seem blazing fast to the other BT users in my house. To pay for this, I am disconnecting the Bell phone, Rogers High Speed Internet, Rogers Cable and one of my Rogers Wireless Phones (for around the house). It's done, the money is available for the best ISP.

Now, if I was to use Techsavvy as my new ISP, just how big a pipe can you send me?

I am completely willing to pair bond DSL or use a multi WAN router to make this happen, the best internet connection I ever had was pair bonded POTS, so I guess I'm really into the whole bondage thing.

How many of the 100GB Capped "PEER 1" connections will you let me bring into my house, two, three, ...?

Do you have any ideas or suggestions?

Are you prepared to sign a fairly worded SLA, I don't want any more ISP abuse?

P.S. I did call your office and spoke with a very nice lady, but she didn't seem to understand, I want a big, fast connection, not just your everyday $30 account, although maybe your customers average better than 70kbs total throughput.

Hi,

I think we'd need to talk on Monday to discuss things as I'd need to investigate a few things before answering much on this topic.... What your asking for sounds like it might be much more than an average user would want.

You might want to consider a Non-PPPoE account which would buy you a little more speed (minimal but still a little more). The problem is in your possible distance away from a CO. This would dictate how far away you are and from there the costs associated and speeds as well.

We can't do SLA contracts as we don't control the Copper. To do so would be signing a possible death warrant with everyone as we can't guarantee anything we can't control. (would love to though!)

The only thing I can say is we'd work hard at making your stay enjoyable and if we can give you 5000/800 we will!

Teksavvy product that can get high speed to a remote area?

Hi.

Im a Teksavvy DSL wholesaler/reseller. although I have very few customers the ones that I have love the service, and the experience I gained running radius/email/web servers is awesome.

Im looking to expand into wireless domain for a few remote areas that are not likely to see high speed DSL or otherwise for many years. But Im looking for a way to get at least one high speed pipe to that remote area some way or another, T1? Ethernet? HDSL, SDSL? Anything? I see all these products offered but Im really doubting that they can be offered in rural areas, if anyone here can help me out with these products, or other methods to get a pipe into a rural area Id greatly appreciate it

Maintenance Window on

Hi Gang,

FYI in case you missed the email sent to the customers....

***********************************

In a continuing effort to improve our systems, we are planning an upgrade that will increase the capacity of our network. This upgrade will be performed in a maintenance window on Wednesday January 17, 2007 starting at 12:00 AM up to 6:00AM. We anticipate a disruption in service of one to two hours as this is a relatively complex upgrade.

During this time, all services will be affected including but not limited to:

Dial up, DSL, co-location, hosting, and dedicated connection clients.

We will be replacing a peripheral switch which will affect all connections, an interruption in service will occur.

As a result of the upgrades you will be required to restart your equipment (DSL modems and routers) after the upgrade window Wednesday morning.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your continued patronage.

service issues

So far, I'm impressed with teksavvy's people, but not with the speeds.

My dl speeds are slightly below where they were at gosonic, ie. 2100kps on the fastest speedtest here.

They are sending a new modem to try, instead of my gnet. Apparently I cannot ramp to 5mb, as I am 4.6km from the c/o.

If this doesn't work, then were off to try rogers to see what they can do.

I experience the same issues, I peak at 4600 this was back in septemper october.

Now my average speeds are at 2100kbps, and I'm going to replace my modem (personal expense) just to see if it's the modem itself.

Note my speed fluctuates all the way down to 1100/200.

Update on the Tunnel situation from the last couple days...

Hi all,

Just wanted to give you all a quick heads up as you will likely see a possible slowdown again tonight. Bell has assured us that everything will be in place for tomorrow to move tunnels around and free up some space and relieve some congestion.

So, as you might have guessed, you will likely have one more (final) night where you might see some slower than normal speeds.

Sorry for the inconvenience gang... we should have some relief by tomorrow, mid day.

PS - Just a reminder about the maintenance window starting at midnight tonight....

Re: Update on the Tunnel situation from the last couple days...

Yup.... The busiest time is around the 10PM point at night.... We've been working for the last three days to get things set with Bell. They're promising results for tomorrow during the day.

More on this as it becomes available.

The first test was a tad slower, still much faster than the 1700k on Sun, Then blipped back up

so not bad..

Re: Update on the Tunnel situation from the last couple days...

As I understand, we're not quite out of the woods as the demand was higher on the Fibre cards than what we (us and Bell) were anticipating. Bell's going to see about adding a couple more Fibre cards while we install the Gig-E (in 6 weeks or so), as soon as possible.

There shouldn't be much slowdowns but nonetheless, this isn't the ideal situation so we're going to be working at making things as rock solid as possible over the next two weeks, while we wait for the big upgrade!

Re: Update on the Tunnel situation from the last couple days...

Hi Rocky

The few quick tests I did up till then were fine, I probably managed to catch the one minor slow down, which did not last very long at all.

Personally I am quite happy with Teksavvy's response and service

What to expect next with the upgrades....

Hi all,

Here's what we're up to.

We made some changes to the back-end to prepare for the new Gig-E coming in last night....

We had an additional 100Meg added last week in preparation for today....

Last night, we added an additional card to the ERX to accommodate for future user growth and also added a few peripheral switches to better organise the internal works.

Bell will be swinging some tunnels today, around 6PM, to off-load some GTA traffic and will affect Montreal and London in so doing (FYI in case you drop off-line).... They're not sure if it will affect anyone but I'd rather be safe than sorry in stating it.

Once this portion is done, we'll be waiting for the Gig-E to come in (4 to 6 weeks from now) at which point we will be moving all clients over to it.

After all clients have been moved to the new Gig-E we will convert one of the two remaining Gig-Es to the same type of Gig-E setup for tunnel load balancing and will allow us for much space going forward.

...all-in-all, the changes that are going to occur shortly are going to be huge and allow us to just about double our client-base without having to touch a thing once completed!

Regards,

Re: What to expect next with the upgrades....

We managed to swing the tunnels without affect much of anything (»Tunnels are being switched now...). Bell did a great job pulling in getting things done quickly with Marc & Gabe from our side! I think the total swing time between the tunnels were something like 2 seconds a piece.....

Ok... so on to the next phase, which won't be for another 4 to 6 weeks, where we will be adding the additional Gig-E.

More to come at that point.

Tunnels are being switched now...

Ok.... The tunnels are being switched right now....

This will possibly affect Montreal and London clients.

Transistion from Bell Sympatico to TekSavvy, speed concerns

Greetings all,

I'm currently subscribing to Sympatico Highspeed (3 Meg Profile, been with them for 6 years) and have also just subscribed to TekSavvy, which was activated on the 8th of January this year.

Thus far, I have received the Speedtouch 516 modem from TekSavvy and have cancelled my service with Sympatico, which runs until February 4th. I'm still waiting for the return package to send back the Alcatel modem which belongs to Bell, so that I may finally use only TekSavvy's service as fully intended.

As it currently stands, I can use either Sympatico or TekSavvy, although I've noticed that when I log into my TekSavvy profile I get around 3 Megs.

I was thinking that this was due to Bell Sympatico setting my line to a 3 Meg profile, and since I'm still subscribed to them, should wait until the 4th of February before I can fully use TekSavvy's 5 Meg profile.

Would this be safe to assume? I'm hoping that once my Sympatico account has been deleted that my line will be able to sync at 5 Megs. For the time being, I've used the Line Quality Tests a few times and my latency was about 40ms on average with 0% line loss.

If anyone can provide any kind of tips or suggestions, it would be much appreciated! Thanks!

Rocky, how hard is it to change an IP?

Just curious, and if so, how do I go about doing it?

Re: Rocky, how hard is it to change an IP?

FYI, my transition to Teksavvy in December went without a hitch. I was told by the Teksavvy CSR that sometimes Bell will disconnect the customer for the old ISP, even though Teksavvy says not to, as they are the new ISP, and then Bell has to go back and reconnect. I am told this sometimes happens, but did not for me - no disconnection.
