| | | I am about to make the move from Xplornet/Direcway to Xplornet/Telsat within the next few days. Since I have the DW Small Office account, I will go for a two year, KaBang (Small Office) account. It is $10/month less then what I am paying now to get faster speeds which is the up side. The downside appears to be the $700 equipment costs plus installation and I have a perfectly good 98 cm dish and DW6000 modem ready to go...to the landfill!
I'll let y'all know how it goes...

I like the Ka service better. The only thing that ever knocks me out is really heavy rain, but its not as finicky as the Direcway was.

So now there is another choice in the mix. I think I'll stay with my choice for the Ka-band. It seems to be a tad more technologically advanced.

PeteOW5Premium join:2005-12-29 Minesing, ON | Loosing touch I'm sure this is not a new problem, but what's the solution?
I have Xplornet (which works just fine) and connect through a D-Link DI-624. From time to time each connect to the net seems to take longer and longer, as though the system forgets I'm there. Pulling the power cord on the D-Link or hitting 'Repair' makes things improve. Eventually the answer seems to be to pull the power plug on the Xplornet modem, and the D-Link, count to ten and reconnect -- returning swifter service.
Any suggestions? Or do I simply do the above every day or so?
Is this a router artifact, or an Xplornet artifact?
Thanks Pete | |

I have phoned and emailed them for months now and they always promise that they will change me over to a KaBang installation "soon." They claim to be backlogged.
Has anyone had good experiences from any other installers in the Halton or south Wellington area in Southern Ontario (such as Anderson Cable or Rockwood TV)?

I have not yet tried to find out if my MAC address was dropped and reacquired (which would probably mean being assigned a different IP address).
If you go to the Wildblue forum, there is a thread that suggests that hot weather may be causing the lens on the Triad to have problems, and some of these are being replaced.

| | Xplornet Status Reports I realize that the response to the Xplornet forum stated off fairly promising. But since then it has been totally underwealming.
So, I am wondering if it might be handy to check in once in awhile to see what kind of speeds everyone is enjoying (or suffering with) on Xplornet - both Ka-Band and Ku-Band. I realize that speed (status) reports are posted almost every day on the Wildblue and Hughesnet forums, but Wildblue, Hughesnet and Xplornet are not necessarily entirely the same. And if you are on Tachyon or MotoSAT, speed info would be interesting for us to know there as well.
I think it would be helpful to indicate which service level you are on, what NOC beam you are using and so on.
I will just post my speeds for today and see what happens.

Its nowhere near as fast has the Cogeco connection I had in Oakville,ON but still its leaps and bounds over dial-up. I have the KaZoom package right now(1M down and 256K up). I started out with the KaZam package(512K down and 128). With the KaZam package I was FAP'ed almost immediately after only a couple of hours on Utube. Since this forum is kinda hard to find. But the fact is that Xplornet does not care about it's customers..Just add's more customers even when no new bandwidth present. Satellite is a joke at times for speeds when I was on the system..The legal agreemant is to protect Xplornet and not the consumer.. When will the government step in and fine or even jail these ISP's that don't care about minimum bandwidth requirements ,so the service is usable..

Brad R join:2007-05-06 Collingwood, ON | new Xplornet user Well, this forum was well hidden, but somehow I found it. I've just dropped Galaxy Broadband service in favor of Xplornet because of Galaxy's new FAP policies. I'm on the basic Kazam plan and, so far, getting decent bandwidth during the day. Seems to drop to around 250 Kbps during the "prime time" hours, but I can live with that for now.
I'm going to try some experiments to establish the FAP limits, and I'll report them here, if anyone is interested.

| | arghhhh!!! installed Aug 31---shut down Sept1st for 24hrs.
I have just had xplornet installed on Aug 31st.(4pm). On sept 1st my service was slower than dial-up. Tech support informed me I had used up my bandwidth. I hadn't even been been on the net. Not good for business. Therefore.. I have filled out thier form to uninstall this system. It would have been nice to have been informed of this shut down and bandwidth information prior to installation. I guarantee you I would not have taken the service. I am paying for a service and it had better be available when I need it. At $79.00/mon how many days will I be zapped? How much bandwidth is allowed?
COME GET YOUR EQUIPMENT!!!!! I WOULD RATHER USE UNLIMITED DIALUP. IT MAY BE SLOW BUT IT IS AVAILABLE WHEN I NEED IT FOR BUSINESS!!!!!!! and is $40/mon cheaper
|
| Brad R join:2007-05-06 Collingwood, ON | Re: arghhhh!!! installed Aug 31---shut down Sept1st for 24hrs. Which Xplornet service did you buy? If it's the Ku-band service with the DW7000 modem, you're on the Hughesnet service (your dish will probably say "Hughesnet" or "Direcway"). In which case, you're allowed 200 MB per day, and if you go over that limit you're shut down to slower-than-dialup rates for a full 24 hours. And if you need help with that service, go to the HughesNet forum on this site: »HughesNet Satellite There are lots of really helpful people there.
If you're using the Ka-band service with the Surfbeam modem, then this is the correct forum here at dslreports.com. The Ka-band service has an hourly limit which varies according to time of day. But if you exceed that limit, your bandwidth is only reduced for one hour, and then it's restored to normal. (Also, in my experience the reduced bandwidth is still better than dial-up rates.) You might want to check out the forum at »www.xplornetsucks.com/forums where other people are airing their complaints.
But be happy you're able to return your equipment and cancel your service. A lot of people are locked into long-term contracts.

| dave_caPremium join:2004-09-01 Royalton, NB | The KA band satallite package may better suit you. While I do get FAP'd during peak times, for doing various bandwith intensive things, I find if I schedule all my torrents to download during off peak hours, as well as have my anti virus and windows updates run at off peak hours (12am-8am) I have very acceptable speeds for general browsing otherwise. Also, when I get fap'd its only a temporary thing, usually in under an hour I am good to go at regular speeds. | | | Re: xplornet fixed wireless service problems using utorrent check your ip on whatsmyip.org against the ip your router (or pc if you don't use a router). If they aren't the same you are NATed.
I'm in the same boat, but sometimes I get respectable utorrent speeds (100K)... nothing like I used to get on DSL at my old house.
I think the solution might be to sign up for a fixed IP, but I'm not certain. The installer who did my install claimed I needed a fixed IP for P2P (he didn't seem to know much about TCP/IP so at the time I dismissed it).
My theory is that when you get a fixed IP you get elevated from a NATed IP address to a real address. Problem is that the fixed IP could still be firewalled.... that's what I don't know.
$10/month is pretty steep for a fixed and real IP...

| | Xplornet & Xbox Live services Just spreading the word here...We've had Xplornet since Jan/07, the lowest plan. Have been using Xbox Live, playing online games since then. As of Oct 18/07, suddenly unable to participate in online gaming. We hadn't changed any settings here, Xbox Live console showed all connections good, NAT "open". Finally found out Telesat is blocking port 3074, which is required for Xbox Live gaming. Can still access Xbox Live, message, chat, and download, just can't play the games with others. (Yup, Halo 3, biggest online gaming sensation to hit the planet and Telesat blocks it..as well as all the other interactive gaming.) This info came from an Xplornet tech, that port 88 is open but 3074 is being blocked by their "supplier". Xplornet is unable/unwilling to do anything about it. Online port checks at canyouseeme.org and grc Shields Up show this port as open, but obviously stuff isn't passing through. Xbox Live needs UDP and TCP going through this port for the gaming to work. Not a happy customer. Telesat is blocking a service from Microsoft that we're paying for and not getting. I've notified Microsoft, also gave some (polite)feedback to Xplornet. Maybe if enough people respond, the powers that be will be motivated to fix this. | |
