Weird phone issue

So, my Mother calls from her cell phone to tell me she can no longer make phone calls from the home phone. Naturally, after trying a few calls without a problem, I thought she was crazy.

As it turns out, I ran into something odd after all. She likes to keep her number blocked from caller ID permanently, and then dials *82 before the number she is calling when she wants to allow Caller ID... this hasn't changed in years. Suddenly, when dialing out, if you start off with *82, about midway through dialing the rest of the number, about 5 seconds in, you hear two clicks about 1 second apart... and if one of your touch tones happen to land at the same time as that click, then that touch tone is ignored... and eventually you get the "call cannot be completed as dialed" message. The click sounds similar to when a call disconnects, as if the line disconnects and reconnects.

If you're listening for the "click" and don't dial a number at the same time, then the call still goes through. Dialing without *82 doesn't have this problem.

I tried it again on my own line with the same result. Just wondered if anyone else with ABB phone service could try this out to see if it's widespread or if it's just something with my modem.

Re: Weird phone issue

Talked to my boss. Here is our first thought. When you dial *82 the phone dials those digits, then it will give you a stutter tone. If you dial digits during the stutter tone, this may be what you are experiencing. If you wait till the phone dials the *82, then gives you the stutter tone, then dial your number, it should work with no issues. Basically the phone will go beep beep beep (dialing star 8 2) doo (pause) doo (pause) dooooooooooo (steady dial tone)

If that isn't it, let us know.

Re: Weird phone issue

Sorry I haven't replied, we have been crazy. I have tried to replicate this issue and have been unable to do so. I would at this point have to either put it down to something with the modem itself, inside wiring, or phones. It would be best I think to schedule a service call, replicate it for the technician, and see what he can find with his test handset.

Re: Weird phone issue

I unplugged all of the house wiring and plugged in a simple basic wired phone and sure enough the *82 issue was still there. Repeated on the line 2 port, same deal.

One thing, I noticed on my basic phone, is there is an red LED that lights up when the phone is off the hook.

So after dialing *82, and one extra digit, and after waiting about 5 seconds, the click occurs and the LED flashes off and back on as well.

So the click that I am hearing is the actual disconnecting and reconnecting of the phone port on the modem like the reset that happens when a call ends and the other party hangs up... and you haven't yet. It's not a true reset of the line because you can continue to dial digits after the light comes back on.

This isn't limited to *82, as i thought. It seems to be various * codes. Here is a good test...

Dial *67 (the caller id block code) you will hear the three "doo doo doo" sound acknowledging the code. Now do nothing for 5-6 seconds and the port will disconnect for a second and come back causing a break in the dial tone.

So you dial *67 then do nothing else... hear the "doo doo doo" followed by dialtone "doooooooooooooo" a CLICK/pause, and then more dialtone "dooooooooooooooo" until it times out like normal. That click/pause is the issue.

I don't think that this would be a defective modem. More of a misconfiguration... because outside of dialing with a * code, this doesn't happen at all. You may have to be on one of these modems to experience it...

I know someone at work who just got a triple play with the 40mbs, switching off of DirecTV. I'm going to have them try my *67 test before I start to think about calling a tech.

I can't imagine trying to explain this to someone and even convincing them that it's not normal.

Re: Weird phone issue

So I have tested this further, using an Ariss 822 docsis 3.0 cable voice modem in addtion to the d2 modem I tried previously. I am unable to replicate this issue. After the initial stutter tone when you use a * code, the line remains continuous dial tone for for at least 10 seconds on every try.

I think that it is most likely an equipment issue. If you want to try going through a service call, we'd be glad to do that with you.

Re: Weird phone issue

Well, I called today and had a billing related adjustment done on my account. After everything reset, the problem went away... completely.

So I guess the issue is solved, yet still a mystery! Thanks for the troubleshooting/help.

Re: Weird phone issue

How odd, I mean if I thought a hit/reset to the modem would fix such a problem I would have done so. Cable modems are weird.

Re: Weird phone issue

They are. When I first got the new modem, on occasion it would just leave me with a dead line. I'd have to call in to have it reset and they would tell me the modem didn't realize that a previous call had ended.

That hasn't happened in a long time though now.

My favorite was the grey shark-fin modem of the early 2000's. I had that until I signed up for phone service.

Re: We're Officially Part of Cogeco Now

I guess we hope for the best! As long as they don't bring the bandwidth caps, I'll likely be happy.... except for the underwhelming number of HD channels which I hope will improve.

I receive a flier for DirecTV almost weekly... I'm not sure the grass is greener on the other side, but I'm tempted more and more to be an Internet and Phone only customer.

Meanwhile, I received my statement today. Nothing but a list of movies I can buy On Demand.

There's a reason I haven't bought a CableCard device yet. I'm not sure I want to be stuck with cable.

We haven't heard anything other than a fancy email welcoming us to Cogeco. I expect that now that things are official, talk about what they'd like to see Atlantic Broadband do in the future as far as services and so forth will begin. I know everyone wants a better HD lineup, on our side as well as the customer.

Re: We're Officially Part of Cogeco Now

As long as they don't ruin the internet (i.e. caps) and improve the selection of HD channels, I don't really see any reason to complain.

I have to admit, the customer service end has improved over the years, thanks to those like yourself.

Re: Why can't we get Comcast in MOT areas??

Where's MOT?

I get 40mbs from ABB which isn't top of the line nationally, but not too shabby for my area. I can maintain a solid 4.8MB/Sec on downloads and a 12ms ping times on games.

If you were complaining about the HD selection I'd agree with you!

Overbuilding isn't illegal. Comcast chooses not to offer service in your area. We can't make laws that force companies to offer services in your area if they don't want to. Atlantic Broadband is not doing anything to prevent another ISP from offering service in your area.

If you have a problem with Atlantic Broadband service, we're happy to help. If you are just looking to blow off some steam, good luck!

Speeds slow around 7pm...

The past month during the time around 7 pm till about 12pm, I have been getting the slowest speeds ever. »i.imgur.com/T5rHl.png

I checked tonight around 7pm and then around 7:50. I have constant speed equal to what I'm provisioned for.

Maybe you have a heavily saturated node where you are.

I would be happy to investigate these issues for either of the posters in this thread. We have not had any utilization issues for some time now, our DOCSIS 3 upgrades left us with a large amount of available bandwidth. However, weird things happen! I'd be glad to check further. Can you send PM's on this forum? If so feel free to PM me some info I can use to look up your account, physical address or modem mac address would be preferable.

On the topic of speed issues, I can explain our general troubleshooting methodology.

1. have the customer run a speed test.
2. if results are lower than listed speed
3. see if it is a signal issue. modem levels, etc.
4. if we don't see anything like that, ping the modem from our end
5. if not levels or packet loss (if it was we'd roll a service man for line issues)
6. have customer connect a pc direct to modem (assuming a router) and test again
7. if we still have slow speeds
8. check utilization
8. send a service man out to check lines, modem etc, run ping tests and speed tests from his cable testing unit.
9. if after a service call, put in a ticket with our engineers if problem is not resolved (engineer basically requires a tech to have been dispatched to rule out line issues, hence why there are two number 8's!)

The most common causes of slow speeds when a user call are, and this is in no particular order: router, mistaking a slow pc for slow internet (Internet Explorer opens real slow but the bandwidth is available), customer usage (someone running a torrent client and maxing out upload bandwidth.) After those, it is usually poor signal that gets fixed with a service call.

After that, well that is honestly like a 1 in a 1000 case. If we do have utilization issues, we know pretty quick, because everyone on the node calls us within a week or so to let us know. From there, it is a matter of engineering splitting the node, which takes a while. Nodes aren't off the shelf parts and it isn't a simple process to split a node.

" The engineers checked and they aren't seeing any issues in the area that could be causing this. It also appears that you are the only one affected." Atlantic Broadband hasn't giving up on helping you. We would like to continue to work with you, if you are willing. OWN to Digital Value in Cumberland

Noticed on the guide tonight that OWN has been added to Digital Value on channel 37, the former location of Comcast SportsNet here. It remains at its original location of channel 301.

We got new HD channels this time last year, 12 of them. I've been checking hoping for something more. A new analog channel is not exactly what I was hoping to find. No sign of an HD feed of OWN either being added. Hopefully it will follow soon on 737.

No New Channels, Slew of Fee Increases

We have a reminder to subscribe to HD service, just no actual new channels.

But next month Limited service jumps $1.83, Value jumps $2.74, Digital Plus jumps $3.78, DVR's jump $1.

Cinemax jumps to $18.95 from $16.99 (for 3 channels, no ThrillerMax, no 5StarMax, WomanMax, @Max or OuterMax), having 2 premiums jumps $2, 3 premiums jump $5.

For internet, Starter jumps $1 for those without video, $2 for those with video. Max jumps $2 for those with video. MegaMax jumps $2/month. Express and Unleashed jump $3/month.

Phone service jumps $5/month.

$1 more for any digital boxes, extra $2 for HD service, extra $1 for modem rental, extra $1 for wire maintenance.

Most significant price increases in the industry, least amount of content. Great negotiators you've got there, ABB.

In August, they're basically going to be charging me $200/month not even having a DVR, no additional premiums, and 10/1 internet. Is it any wonder your customers feel absolutely no loyalty to you?

Re: No New Channels, Slew of Fee Increases

My notice of increases came with this months bill.

My favorite is the digital receiver fee is now up to $10 a month. I had one of these that I got from Charter in 2000 for a TV in a spare bedroom. It used to be $3.95 a month then... amazing how the cost of providing a 13 year old box costs $10/mo now when it was $4 a month brand new. No longer made sense the keep it.

Re: No New Channels, Slew of Fee Increases

It's just printing money for them at this point. And it's ridiculous.

Box fees to me are the biggest scam going. Those things ABB is using have been paid for over and over again.

The only reason I still pay ABB for an HD box is I haven't committed to cable long-term with an HTPC.

I called tech support, and of course they said "Come by to change the modem, no problems on our end" It is also important to note, that this happens more often when I watch HD Streams or I play the game league of legends, I'd like to know what could be wrong.. Guy at tech also said it could be my pc? (Which I Loled at)

Thanks in advance.

Re: Dhcp failed - Requested Info not supported.

That sort of problem is either the modem loosing the connection to our headend, or an equipment problem. You can google the error Critical D003.0 DHCP FAILED and find many instances of this being the case. If the tech looked at your connection and said it wasn't a problem on our end, I'm assuming that your levels are good. I'd be happy to double check for you. If it isn't a signal problem, then it is going to be a modem problem. PM me some info and I can double check your modems signal levels.

This error is just a case of the modem stating that it can't communicate with the DHCP server. It does not mean that the DHCP server is experiencing issues. If it was, I would gladly tell you that. It is always easier to acknowledge an outage than it is to get cracking on a tricky technical issue!

12 new HD Channels in the Guide for Cumberland

Got a surprise checking the guide tonight, 12 new HD channels coming very soon to ABB here in Cumberland. They're in the guide, but haven't loaded up yet.

733 HLN HD
754 Disney XD HD
762 Weather Channel HD
774 truTV HD
801 IFC HD
806 ESPNU HD
811 Starz Edge HD
816 Fox Business HD
827 HBO Signature HD
828 HBO Family HD
843 Showtime Showcase HD
847 Movie Channel HD

Anything new for the rest of you? You guys in Altoona/Johnstown are long overdue. We're now ahead of Uniontown (who is all digital) on networks, but don't have QVC HD, HSN HD, VH1 HD or CMT HD that they do. We have Outdoor Channel HD and AMC HD that they don't.

Thanks ABB!

This will bring us to 50 networks, 14 premiums and 78 HD channels total. Since we're not even digital yet, that's pretty good.

Re: 12 new HD Channels in the Guide for Cumberland

This sounds promising. I'll have to check tonight. Not holding my breath though. Altoona/Johnstown went from the best treated system in the early days to the forgotten. Your 2013 HD thread is evidence of that.

I'm giving it until the end of summer to see some evidence of improvement... and then I'm moving on.

Re: 12 new HD Channels in the Guide for Cumberland

And Altoona/Johnstown is the largest of the areas. I don't know what they're waiting on. I'm rooting for you guys to get a ton of new HD.

All the channels appeared in the guide last night, and are live as of this afternoon. truTV HD just lit up in the last hour, the others were up before that.

I think the main difference you're seeing is we're at 860MHz, and Altoona/Johnstown is 750MHz.

Re: 12 new HD Channels in the Guide for Cumberland

That probably is the difference. How were you able to confirm that? I've never seen anything above 750Mhz and assumed, but I always thought Altoona/Johnstown went up to 1Ghz after the last Charter upgrade.

Re: 12 new HD Channels in the Guide for Cumberland

Someone from ABB posted I believe that your system is 750MHz. I think equipment could also be holding things back. Your system is Cisco, and it might be the only one in ABB. I know we're all Motorola down here.

I know when Comcast went through its digital transition that the Cisco areas had to wait a long time because Cisco was slower to produce digital transport adapters, that could be a factor in it.

I don't know what's taking so long for you guys, but you deserve a ton more HD than you're getting.

It should be said that The Weather Channel HD feed is the national feed, no Local on the 8's included as of yet.

Re: 12 new HD Channels in the Guide for Cumberland

I looked last night. No sign of anything. I scanned frequencies with the HTPC, and nothing has changed or moved around as if to make more room for something else.

The chances of moving up from 750Mhz is probably slim, which means it will be a squeeze game. They'll probably have to go through a massive analog decrease and roll out the DTA's before they can add more HD... so that will likely be "forever" away.

Cable modem replacement

A coworker who has ABB in Stevensville, MD asked me if he could buy a modem for his internet to save on the rental fee. When I asked him a few tech questions about it his eyes glazed over so I figured I would come here. First, is it possible to do? Second, is there a list of approved modems if he can do it? Are they on docsis 3.0 yet? Thanks in advance for any help you can give. It is appreciated.

Re: Cable modem replacement

As long as it is not a phone modem, yes he can purchase his own modem. He will have to call us to add it to his account, we'll need the brand and model number of the modem, and the modems MAC address. Stevensville, MD is an area that is docsis 3.0. Of course the customer has to pay for the speed if they want to upgrade to the 20mb or 40mb connection to take advantage of a docsis 3.0 modem.

Approved modem list. »www.atlanticbb.com/pdf/Approved%···List.pdf

I would recommend a motorola 6120/6121/6141 or Arris cm820a.

Using SB6121 with ABB Express Service question

Hi, I recently upgraded from an old DOCSIS 2.0 modem to a new Motorola SB6121 to try and take advantage of DOCSIS 3.0 since it is supposed to get me better speeds with the Express service. For some reason, my downstream only recognizes one bonded channel instead of 4 like I'm supposed to be getting, at least that is what I assumed. I've called tech support and they have provisioned it twice, and it will only show a blue light for about 30 minutes, then eventually it reboots itself and reverts back to 1 channel for downstream again (green light). It will stay on the green light until I power cycle it again, but after about 30 minutes it will revert back to 1 channel again. Does this mean I have a defective modem? I bought it brand new just a couple weeks ago, and it stayed with a blue light for several straight days. But now I can't get it to go back no matter what I try (I've done about every power cycle known to man with the modem and separate router). The tech on the phone says I have a good signal, no problem with it. BTW - I'm in the Aiken location. Any advice or should I just return this modem and get something else?

Rep said I can't purchase my own eMTA modem..?

Called into ABB today because we want to get our own modem instead of theirs. Told the rep that we have Triple Play and asked him to go through the list of approved modems with me to tell me which one of the 'phone' modems i could get to use in my area (Sunny Isles Beach, FL). The rep said that i cannot get any because 'phone' modems are not sold anywhere, and if they are, then they are stolen. I said that they are all available for sale on Amazon, and his response was "well, they must be stolen". Ignoring the fact that that's the stupidest thing i've heard all week, is it true that I can't buy and use my own 'phone' modem? Well.. I know i can buy one, but can i hook it up and use it?

Re: Rep said I can't purchase my own eMTA modem..?

Hello elshimiz. What the representative told you was correct. I know it sounds odd, but Motorola and Arris generally do not sell eMTA's direct to consumers. They are only provided to cable companies. When you see one for sale on Amazon or Ebay, it is not likely to be sold new in retail packaging. They are not carried by electronics retailers. You can check Best Buy, Staples, Wal-Mart, Target and any other electronics retailer and you won't find an eMTA.

You do have to get it from us, if you want our phone service. I apologize, but that is the truth.

The primary reason is phone providers have an obligation for providing phone service specifically to dial 911 for emergencies. This gives us obligations to customers in making sure phone service is working and reliable, so one of the ways we ensure the service is working is we provide and install the eMTA.

BeIn Sports - Live in Cumberland (Channels 317/318)

I'm stunned Atlantic Broadband added these soccer channels. They are in widescreen SD, it appears.

English feed on Channel 317, Spanish feed on Channel 318 here in Cumberland.

This is really encouraging that more sports programming might be coming. If we get MLB Network, I'm going to lose it. I would be fine with an additional sports/entertainment pack (like Comcast) for those of us who would want this programming.

I've been checking tvguide.com who seems to be the most up-to-date for Atlantic Broadband, and I don't see anyone else having this but Cumberland. But interestingly, it now shows G4 on channel 61 where it hasn't been for 3 years. I wonder if it's coming back.

Winchester Road, Cumberland - Is it ABB?

I've seen quite a few contracted lineman on Winchester road in Cumberland in the past weeks. It looks like they're running a steel cable in order to run some new lines on the poles. The line is up with the cable/fiber bundle. Does anyone know if this is for ABB or not? If it is, anyone know what the purpose is? I heard a rumor back in early December that ABB was going to start providing residential fiber in early 2013 and it'd be exciting if this was a new fiber line to that purpose!

Not sure who or what you are seeing, but Atlantic Broadband has no plans to change from a cable company to fiber to the home, or at least not something that has been announced to anyone here.

Re: Winchester Road, Cumberland - Is it ABB?

Hi Jason,

Thanks for the response. After further investigation it looks like they are running some lines as a part of that Maryland broadband initiative. The only reason I say that is the lines they ran are hoping from pole to pole connecting some boxes in the ground. The boxes have an orange market on them denoting that its fiber and its a part of the Maryland broadband initiative (DoIT - OMBN)

Just for your information, cable companies do use fiber, just not fiber to the home. Cable systems are called hybrid fiber coax. Basically we run a string of fiber from a head end out to a town/neighborhood, then convert to coaxial cable and run that to the home.

I looked up that One Maryland Broadband Network. Sounds like it is for public institutions and government locations.

Slower internet speeds

This is the first I've noticed it... but like another has mentioned in a different market, speeds are beginning to slow during prime hours.

I pay for the 40/3 service in Altoona. In the past couple of weeks it won't go above 18-20 during 6-9pm. As it gets later in the evening it slowly climbs back up to the advertised speeds.

Seems to be saturation of bandwidth based on the observation of peak vs. off peak hours.

Re: Slower internet speeds

Saturation is usually dependent on the node and how many lines are subscribed on to it.

They might need to split the node. There's not many connections on my node it seems (A lot of retirees, less computer literate types).

I have 40/3 in Johnstown, I'll do some tests tonight around those times and see how it looks.

also, can you do a test to speedtest.atlanticbb.net vs like www.speedtest.net ?

the one at atlantic stays in their network, so that will tell you if it's a node/area thing, versus abb's connection to the upstream internet.

Cool, thanks. That's the one I've been using to test with. I've tried speedtest.net additionally, and it's very close to the same at those times.

It's been a week or so since I've checked so I'll have to try again as well. It's perfect at obscure times such as 4 am when I should be sleeping.

TV Guide Network Dropped in Cumberland Effective 6/30

TV Guide Network (channel 2) will be dropped per my latest statement on June 30th here. I couldn't care less, but some older people with analog only will be quite upset. I don't know if this change applies to all of the regions, but it does here.

I would like to see the full-screen version of the channel, who appears to have some decent programming.

One less analog channel, two more HD channels would be a nice little deal to make, I would think.

When they dropped KDKA in Altoona, the CBS affiliate from Pittsburgh, they didn't bother replacing it. They just simulcast WTAJ from channel 5 on channel 2. Seems like a waste of a prime spot.

Re: TV Guide Network Dropped in Cumberland Effective 6/30

It's a nice thought to use the bandwidth, at least.

Has there ever been any word on those dozens of promised HD channels using SDV in Altoona/Johnstown? I figure our next additions may come from whatever you guys get when it goes to 80-100 HD channels there.

If I were guessing, and 100 HD channels is the goal, that we'd get the following:

QVC HD
HSN HD
VH1 HD
OWN HD
Oxygen HD
BET HD
CMT HD
Style HD
Destination America HD
H2 HD
ID HD
ESPNEWS HD
HBO Latino HD
MoreMax HD
ActionMax HD
Showtime Extreme HD
Showtime Beyond HD
TMC Xtra HD

That's 18 that would take us to 96.

Altoona/Johnstown have less locals than us, but would get added premiums from HBO Comedy HD, HBO Zone HD and ThrillerMax HD which are not carried here. Without adding some channels not in the system, there's not much else they can add than that. I would really like to see GSN HD, TV Land HD, Hub HD and Fuel HD with the pending Fox Sports 2 HD conversion, not including channels we don't currently have available in any form.
