| Hawaiian Telcom E-Mail Problems I've noticed a lag in sending e-mail to certain domains . On top of that, some e-mail delivery has been slowed. I've been in contact with Hawaiian Telcom about this. Today I got confirmation that they are working on the problems. Although I didn't get an ETA when it would be fixed. | |

Interestingly, I still have all my original Verizon accounts... and they all can still access the Verizon news server. I guess it doesn't matter... I don't really do news anymore anyway. LOL! -- My Site

| Re: Hawaiian Telcom E-Mail Problems I believe I slid through the cracks. Verizon never did transfer my accounts to Hawaiian Telcom... I set some up manually a month after their systems went live.
In fact, the accounts that were transfered did NOT belong to me! A short while after the deadline to alter settings (pop3, smtp, etc), I called Hawaiian Telcom because I could not login. I thought I needed to reset passwords or something. The CSR got real confused when I gave my usernames... he listed some names completely foreign to me.
He casually deleted them all and said I could just go set some up the same way a new customer could. All of my usernames were available so it was really no more trouble. However, I still wonder what happened with the person who actually owned those other accounts...
I just tried logging in to the verizon portal... "We are sorry, but there is a problem creating your account." I still get mail to those accounts, though... mostly spam, and a few newsletters that may as well be spam. -- My Site

| ADSL2+ The old frame relay/Fujitsu is officially being done away with and I just received a new Westell modem:
E90-611010-06 Rev B (1/2007) DSL2+ BRIDGE
The circuit this was for was supposed to be turned off last year... back then, I didn't want any downtime so I ordered new service on another line and when that went live I turned off the old. Apparently, the circuit has been up all along... not billed, though.
I spoke with someone regarding this and had a chance to ask about the modem. I was told we will see DSL2+ speeds in the not-too-distant future. Still, I'm not going to hold my breath for 20+ mbits. -- My Site

|
| | | | | | HTel suggested I check the filters; disconnecting the phones altogether didn't do anything, but then cycling the modem a few times popped my speed back up to 1150Kbs. Still seems low by the standards of my area code, but it'll do for now.
I was rather hoping it would be a wiring problem, since we pay for line maintenance. Now I guess I have to do actual work, ie periodically cycle the system, to keep the speeds up.

1 edit | Re: Faster Hawaiian Telcom HSI Pricing How old is your modem ? Do you hear static on your line ? You should inquire how long your loop length is from the CO to your location. A friend of mine lives more than 18,000 on a 1.5Mbps circuit. He can barely get 1.0Mbps.
By the way you, shouldn't have to cycle your modem except for certain circumstances. I have ADSL +2 Westel 6100 modem> I've never had to cycle to get my speeds back up.

Your filters may be installed wrong Well, it isn't rocket science: plug filter into phone jack, plug phone into filter. Or am I missing something? FWIW, the phone line quality is good, no static even on our one special phone with a humongous amplifier.
Anyway, I'm not terribly unhappy with 1.2Mbps, but experience indicates that the connection will slow again within a few weeks. It could just be that my modem (an old Westell 2100) can stand to be upgraded; under what circumstances will Hawaiian Tel do a swap?

| | | I called Hawaiiantel and they said that the 7 mbps plan was in my area and would set me up. It has been two weeks and four calls to them to try and get it all worked out but they tell me now that they can't do it. So I am going to return it to them. A little sad since I would have loved to download my files at 7 or even 11 mbps but Hawaiantel seems to have no idea on when they will truly have the service up and running. The reps are nice but they seem to be left in the dark and the sales office tells you one thing and the techs tell you another. Plus to make it worse they say Ewa (where I live) is one of the main sites for the roll out. Right now I have Road Runner and they turned up my speed to 5.0 a few months ago. | |

| New install in progress... Well, despite a lot of negative comments about Hawaiian Tel from folks around (in real life), ordering new service was clean, pleasant, and so far a cinch. My initial call on Tuesday was answered by a live person after 2 rings... no automated service. The modem arrived 2 days later. The tech came out today, fixed some wiring and I have dial tone. Next Tuesday or Wednesday, I should get sync on the modem.
I was worried that I would be too far from the CO. Well I AM very far from my old CO. What I didn't realize is that there is a relatively new CO in North Kihei... I am less than 2K feet from it in spatial distance.
The tech/installer was very good, knew a lot... originally on the job with GTE, FWIW. Said there were only 2 guys doing all of N. Kihei and they average 5 jobs each per day.
He expressed some disappointment that they weren't doing fiber to the premise... not in the cards with Carlyle at the helm. However, he pointed out that Verizon had absolutely no intention of doing it in Hawaii either. They probably had no intention of upgrading capacity to adsl2+ speeds, either... so it looks like we are better off sold by Verizon. -- My Site

I stopped by the new house this morning with my first load of crap for the day and, lo and behold, my modem had sync. I should have some equipment hooked up tomorrow and will run a speed test then. So far, very good service from HT.
OTOH, my wife stopped by the cable company (Oceanic Time Warner) to turn on the cable. Everything's ready at the house... all they have to do is hook us up "on the pole" (actually a green box across the street, I believe). The soonest they can send someone out for this 2 minute job is 9/28. Yes, the 28th!!! I am tempted to go Dish. -- My Site

| | | said by Konaguy:I'm looking for some feedback from anyone who has the new HT DSL speed tiers ? I have had the 11 mbps service for a couple of months. The best Java speed test bandwidth I have attained to any mainland speed test site is just under 7 mbps down, 0.8 mbps up. Hawaiian Telcom's speed test just reported 10.3 mbps down, 1 mbps up.
So if you frequently have more than one simultaneous download in progress, the 11 mbps service might be worthwhile. But if single downloads are more common, then the 7 mbps service might be sufficient.
The service has been good until the past few days when I have experienced periods during which their POP server was down and when Internet bandwidth was lousy (a Java speed test to San Francisco just reported a whopping 1.4 mbps down :-( I don't know why Internet bandwidth is so lousy today.

Recorded voice msg on tech support line says rolling blackouts are affecting DSL service (no rolling blackouts in our area of town though, electric service is fine and dandy). Phone service working fine. Cable too. Can't the DSL guys siphon some electricity from the phone side? No eta when service will be back to normal in their message. Can't find system status on their web site. Any one know the url?
The ironic thing is the DSL was pretty much solid in our area during the heavy downpours last week when a flood alert was issued for Oahu.

| | Strange speed issues with usenet I have been having the strangest issues with my usenet download speeds. I used to consistently get around 310-320 KB/s with the grabit program which is what I use as my newsreader. This was pretty much maxing out my 3mb connection. Now my speed has been like 80KB/s which is a huge drop compared to what I used to get. Then when I try downloading from rapidshare as a test I get around 320 KB/s which is what I'm used to so it can't be an internet problem it must be a newsgroup problem. Am I right? Is this fixable or just a newsgroup glitch I have to wait through? | |

| | Losing connection during peak hours Hi, I've been using Hawaiiantel DSL for a few months and the modem always loses sync at peak hours (around 5-10pm) and throughout the day on weekends. At off-peak hours it works great: 2.4mb down, 500k up. (only getting half that since the last support visit though)
Hawtel's support has been very responsive and so far they've cut all other phonelines in the house, sent a replacement Westell e90 modem, replaced the line from the pole to the house and switched the circuit. Still, like clockwork, at 5-6pm the DSL light starts blinking. On rare occasions it will reconnect but only at slow speeds (20k)
The last tech that came said that other DSL users further down the line had no trouble and he didn't know what the problem was. I've also tried several times connecting the modem to the telco box outside to no avail. Does anyone know anything else I could try?
here are my line test results: »/linequality/nil/2378075
