Cogent 10mbs is a big lie

We've been running their 10mbs product for a year in a tier 1 datacenter in SF, and we've need seen anything close to the 10mbs promised. Not that for $500 a mo we can really complain, but I'd take the consistency of a T1 from BBN (if they'd not gone belly up on the Genuity purchase) over Cogent any day.

The problem with Cogent appears to be that they massively oversubscribe their internet presence, so that while we are getting 92mbs to the local POP, even to test servers in Washington DC from SF, we sometimes get less than 1mb out to the rest of the planet, which is where we really want to hang out.

When we challenged Cogent that the best we can get, on a good day is 4mbs and usually we're bouncing between 1mbs and 3mbs, we were told, "speed is not guarenteed" and when I read the fine print of the contract I realized, that they've promise no SLA's, promised nothing to us, and we didn't have a leg to stand on.

Presently we are evaluating our options to provide a redundant path to the Internet to supplement Cogent that won't break the bank each month.

Cogent is cheap, and some people say it's fast, but I wouldn't build my business on it. I'd consider it a worthy secondary connection.

Waive Setup fees on an On-net building?

Hi Guys,

I can get a cabinet at a datacenter who is a cogent POP. Now they sent me the papers for review and its a month to month contract, but theres a $1000 setup fee.

Is there any way or have you guys gotten the setup fee dropped?

Thanks

Re: Waive Setup fees on an On-net building?

You are going to pay $10 a megabit or less, month-to-month, and you expect to get the install fee waived on top of that deal? I wouldn't count on it.

Dallas/Fort Worth problems?

Why is it that when Cogent has problems at DFW, it takes them forever and a day to fix it? Don't they realize that when their advertising is screwed up, it affects the entire eastern part of the US?

Speed Test Server on Cogent?

Is there a speed test server which resides on Cogent's network? I can't seem to saturate my upload bandwidth with any speed test server I've tried, but I am able to max out my download speed with some servers.
