Amazing ISP

Last Result:
Download Speed: 5031 kbps (628.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 625 kbps (78.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

- Moved into an apartment, older building in Hamilton ON.
- Purchased my own ADSL bridge (Efficient Networks SPEEDSTREAM 5360) from ebay. Previously an AOL for Broadband modem
- Bell tech patched a dry loop with a 5000/800 profile.

I was online in 3 days.

I don't understand how people can shell out $40-$80 a month to Bell/cogeco/rogers etc... I love the fact that i have no monthly bills to pay as well. Just the year rate and nothing more - as a student, this makes my life a lot easier.

I really want to thank Acanac, you've left a great impression on me and I'm constantly referring family and friends to this ISP.

Keep up the good work.

My experience as an Acanac customer so far...

So I've been with Cogeco (cable) for a few months and was very happy with the speed of their network, but one thing I wasn't happy with was the bandwidth limitations. So I decided to give Acanac a try due to their unlimited bandwidth. :-)

I phoned and spoke with one of their customer service reps, he was very friendly and helpful, answering all of my questions. First off I wanted to make sure that their service was available in my area, and that I would be able to receive the 5mb/s service. I live in the north end of town so I wasn't sure if I was anywhere close to the CO or not. As I know that the closer you are, the faster your speed will be. The rep tells me that yes I can get service in my area and that I will be able to receive 5mb/s service. :-)

I was told that my 1 year contract would cost $227.40, and my 1 year dry loop connection would cost $96.00. So after making sure I had the room on my credit card I went ahead and signed up through the Internet. A couple of days later I received a confirmation email of my order, along with an invoice for what I had paid. I was quite surprised when I noticed that instead of being charged $227.40, I had been charged $277.35, an additional $49.95 deposit charge - something I had NOT been told about, even though I specifically asked about the total amount of charges, and even confirmed what numbers I'd see on my credit card bill. I understand why this charge is there, I just would have preferred to be told about it when I asked about any additional charges. :(

So a few days later the modem shows up, a few days after that a Bell technician shows up and wires up the dry loop connection. While he's wiring it up, we're chatting and I was asking him how far away I am from the CO. He explains to me that I'm actually right across the street from it, and he points it out. Yay, lucky me! :-)

So after the Bell tech leaves I disconnect my Cogeco connection and hook up the Acanac modem and start downloading to check my connection speed. Unfortunately the fastest I'm getting is about 450kb/s (download), and my latency is high enough that about 50% of the web pages I'm trying to get to are timing out and won't load, or I'll have to reload them several times to get them to come up. :(

So I give Acanac a call, again, their customer service rep is very friendly and professional. She gets me to run a few speed tests and check some settings. She tells me that it must be a line problem and that a Bell technician will come out and resolve it. I was told that I would either notice a speed increase, or a Bell tech would contact me (if they needed access into my apartment), and that the situation would be resolved within a couple of days.

A few days later, still no speed increase, no Bell technician ever called. So I give Acanac another call. This time the customer service rep was very hard to understand, his voice kept cutting in and out and I could only catch about every other word. He eventually manages to get through the explanation that it's because he's on a VOIP connection. He explains that Bell has to do a software update on one of their systems to get it to recognize the hardware in my area and that update would take place within about 24 hours.

Just to err on the side of caution, I give it 36 hours and still have a painfully slow connection, maximum speed of 425kb/s (download), web pages are still not loading properly. Time to give Acanac another call. :(

I speak with the customer service rep about the situation. This time I'm told that the speed I'm getting is the fastest speed I'm able to get in my area. WHAT?!? I asked him to explain how that could be. He says that the DSL max speed in my area is what I'm currently getting. Well that doesn't make sense to me, there are other tenants in my building that have DSL service (with Bell Sympatico) and are able to get 5mb/s. I tell this fact to the customer service rep, I also tell him that I'm right across the street from the CO, and that the Bell tech who wired up my dry loop told me that I'd have no problem getting 5mb/s service. The rep tells me that he can open the ticket back up with Bell and have them check again. So I asked him to please do that, otherwise I'd have no choice but to box up their modem and ask for a refund. He tells me that 24 hours from now I should have either a speed increase, or a call from Bell about the situation.

I'm hoping they can resolve this in a way where I can cancel my Cogeco service and stick with Acanac, but if 450kb/s is all they can give me, that's not going to happen. :(

I have had acanac dsl service for 2 years and I am very pleased with it overall.
I am considering getting VOIP Phone Service and wanted to know how reliable/clear it is. Also, are there times when your service doesn't work for long periods of time?
I want to hear from people that have the service and also from acanac employees.
Please let me know asap.
Thanks,
Jimmy

Acanac Trial

Hi, I currently have Teksavvy DSL and found out about Acanac. I started doing some reading and discovered that you can apply for a free 1 month trial. I never found a post or webpage that confirmed this. Anyway if it is possible, can I have the trial account and still have my Teksavvy account at the same time or not ?

Thanks
