Blackberry tethered modem (VZW)

I'm on day one with my brand new Blackberry 7130e! So far so good. I'm very excited about this "tethered modem" feature because I was planning on getting a broadband card anyways. After the initial sign up and activation of my voice & data plan (unlimited data & 1350 min for $79.99/mo) I tried to use the phone as a tethered modem but it didn't work. A quick call to 888-2JOIN-NOW fixed the problem and I was signed up for the BroadbandAccess service for an additional $15.00/mo. Not too shabby!

Speed tests:

humm... not quite what I was expecting. Granted, this is right out of the box. I'll run Dr. TCP and test it again later.

I'm off to the beautiful mountains of Ruidoso, New Mexico for the weekend. I can't wait to test this thing out.

Re: Blackberry tethered modem (VZW)

So, you're saying that for $95 a month, you have the phone and can use it as a modem for EVDO speeds? And you don't use minutes for the EVDO?

If so, I guess I'll have to upgrade to a blackberry cause I'm paying $120 for my phone and air card access.

Re: Blackberry tethered modem (VZW)

Yes. I've also got unlimited sms messaging for an additional $10 a month (unlimited to other VZW subscribers, 500 texts to non subscribers)

Total bill *should* be $105 plus tax and fees. I just signed up , I'll reply to this post when i get my first bill. Oh and this is on my business account. I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

UPDATE: As seen in the screen shots VZW has bumped up the prices on the Voice & data plan online... if you signed up for the Core Choice it would be:

$79.99 + $15.00(first month free)EDVO = $94.99(plus tax and fees)

The EDVO tethered modem worked great! I stopped at white sands along my way and was surfing the net atop a huge white dune!

Speeds were a little slower in Ruidoso, NM. All in all much better then I expected... Now on to Dr. TCP! I've also been trying to get this thing to work on my Mac powerbook and my Ubuntu laptop. No luck so far.

In other good news, I finally understand why people call these things crackberries! I'm so addicted to this thing. It's like RIM read my mind when they made it! I keep finding new features everyday that are simply AMAZING! Oh, and before i chose the 7130e I did a little homework and a big complaint was battery life... No problems AT ALL! The thing charges via USB (and power cube) so whenever i was surfing the net it was charging. My crappy Dell D810 battery was dead without a single bar missing on the CrackBerry!

EVDO Rollout?

Does anyone have any information or a schedule on EVDO rollout to areas where it is not available yet?

I was told in the Local Verizon store that is was scheduled for our area last summer. I know that had to be wrong, because it is not here yet.

I would like to have it for better speed on my laptop wireless card when I use it, and also for having the VCast on my cell phone.

Thanks.

I was surprised to find EVDO in Marshall, NC. Unfortunately I'm on the very edge of coverage close to the Hot Springs area.

Verizon had every opportunity to offer coverage here, but US Cellular did it first.

While I'm happy to roam onto US Cellular's much stronger signal they don't offer EVDO, just 1xRTT with latencies of around FOUR seconds. I can get about 80 kb/sec, but the latency makes VPN unbearable.

Now that US Cellular is covering the area it will be a long time before anyone else covers it.

Well, to stay on topic, it's been rolled out in the Asheville area, but they don't seem to be willing to let us know when it will be rolled out elsewhere. I did notice that the Ashevile store started touting Vcast and Broadband Access a few months before EVDO showed up...

Bakersville, NC area 28705 still working on improving my signal and still learning about EVDO.

These tests are with barely two bars (-93 to -95 dBm) I noticed quite a jump between a one bar test and test with two bars. I have an outdoor antenna coming so hopefully this will get me into a good solid two bars or maybe even three. With the limits from verizon not sure I want it too fast.

Happy with Verizon's BBand service, Verizon wireless in general. Some incompatability with newer Dell (D620, D630) laptops' NIC and internal wireless cards under WinXP - but disabling them both completely solved problem with minimal inconvenience.

I saw 680kbps up / 560 kbps down today. No complaints.

Has anyone tethered a Blackberry Pearl yet?

I'm really anxious to get rid of this miserable Microsoft piece of crap Treo and get a nice reliable Blackberry, but I must have a camera.

Now that Verizon is finally coming out with a Blackberry with a camera I'm going to maybe pick one up, but I need to be able to tether it to the laptop.

I don't want to have to pay for a data plan for the Blackberry and laptop.

Has anyone tried this out with the Pearl? Now if the Pearl only had a QWERTY keyboard...

having speed & connectivity issues (using usb720/vista)

I just started using this about a week and a half ago. I would get bad speeds until I hooked up the usb extension cable and I updated to the current software version (6.3.7). After I did that, I would get speeds of around 140-150kb/s. It would normally show 2-3 bars. I could stay connected as long as I wished so all was fine for about a week. However, A few days ago I started having issues. It disconnect every 3-10 minutes and it currently maxes out at like 15kb/s. The only thing I've been able to come across so far is tweaking the TCP setting. Is there anything I can try doing that might get me back to the former speed, or might this be an issue with the modem where it would need to be exchanged?

this is what currently comes up when I do a speedtest:

and this is my vzaccess manager:

If you find a fix, let me know. I am stuck in the upper corner of my house to be able to pick up Broadband most of the time. However, I am also getting cut off sometime every 5 seconds or so. I have the latest software installed on my Vista maching and made the necessary adjustments they recommended on the web site to eliminate the frequent disconnects without any success. Please HELP if possible. Thanks!

Sharing Verizon Broadbandaccess connection?

I have a USB720 USB Modem and although my RSSI (Received Signal Strength) is fairly low - One bar I have up/down speeds equivalent to my problematic Hughesnet Satellite Internet without its latency!

I am currently using the optional (magnetic mount) external antenna that Verizon sells for it to position in exactly best spot of my two story home.

I have previously shared my Internet connection on a small household wireless network via a Linksys wireless router. I typically share it between my laptop, my desktop and my wife's laptop and desktop. Never are there more than 1 or 2 up and running at a time.

I have so far I have ONLY been successful sharing my internet connection by running modem on a Desktop upstairs, using Windows Internet Connection Sharing (ICS).

Do I have any better options?
Anyone using any software other than the VZAccess Manager?
I thought I read where someone ditched it and was using another workaround?

What are the best info sources for this modem/internet access.

I am REALLY limited in HS Internet access solutions available to me. Until now Satellite was IT! I hate Hughesnet!

Thanks in advance!

I am new at this however I also am seeking a solution to share my Verizon USB 720 connection with one other computer in our home.

As to signal strength I found that when both USB 720 connectors are plugged into "powered" USB ports the signal strength usually is at least one bar when camping along a lake and always at five bars when at home or on the road. An USB router will work just as well if it is separately powered from a power adaptor and both USB 720 connectors are plugged into the router.

Hope this is some help.

$15 more per month for tethering?!!

A year ago when I got this miserable Treo 700w I specifically asked if it would support tethering and was told that it would. I purchased the phone and the "Unlimited" data plan.

It wouldn't.

I'd put a lot of effort into moving into it so I didn't take it back and bought some third party software that, although sort of precarious, could make tethering work.

Last night I installed the 1.22 firmware and tried out ModemLink and the Verizon Access Manager. I got it to connect, but it was having authentication errors and I coudn't use the Internet.

I called Verizon and was told that I didn't have that service enabled on my account!? I was already paying a great deal of money for "Unlimited" Internet access and these guys wanted $15/month more!

I'll have to see if I can go back to the third party software, turns out it's a loophole that they can't seem to fix...

What a scam!
I escalated this, expressed my extreme displeasure, then escalated it again. The second escalation hasn't called me back again, but I expect that he will. At least the first escalation seemed to be taking notes to pass them along to the people making these decisions.

Just a cautionary tale..

yes, by connecting you xbox/360 to your laptop via ethernet, then bridging connections between your ethernet card and the aircard.

Verizon USB720 Compatible with D-Link DIR450 Wireless Router

Verizon incorrectly says that this will not work, and D-Link says the USB720 has never been tested with the DIR-450. Their latest firmware release (1.03 Beta) omits the USB720, but does have the Sprint "Novatel Ovation U720" card. In the setup, select Sprint as the ISP and the U720 as the card. Leave the User Name, Password, and Server Name blank. The Dial Number is #777.

tips on Speed setting

1.You can access a publicly undocumented diagnostic mode of the VZAccess Manager software by pressing CTRL-D and entering the password diagvzw. In diagnostic mode, you can enter a settings window, which offers the choice to lock the modem exclusively in EV-DO ("HDR") mode. When doing so, the modem proves capable of maintaining an EV-DO connection with low signal strength when otherwise it would have downgraded itself to NationalAccess.

i got this from the 'www.evdoforums.com' it is the best place to get info on your verizon wireless setups

Time for new hardware

Hard to believe I've lived with Verizon for 2 years now. Boy, time files when you're broke ... or something.

Anyway, looking to get a new laptop in the not to distant future. Said machine is going to be a Mac Book Pro 17". It has one of those new fangled ExpressCard/34 slots.

Has anyone used the ExpressCard and USB adapter? If so, do you have any thoughts on which one is better? I've been using a KPC650 and it has been rock solid.

Re: Time for new hardware

Il am using the UM USB 150, just for a few days , but works great. From my research, this gives you a better signal reception as it's USB powered. I got one with a 4 foot cord that has 2 connectors to hook into 2 USB ports but mine are on opposite sides. However I have a PowerBook G4 1.67 Ghz. Reception has been excellent, I am in San Diego County. North part and get 3 to 4 lights on a 4 light maximum. I am in a tough area for cell on the side of a mountain. I had them set me up at the Verizon owned store, about 15 minutes, mostly waiting for activation. Of course they knew nothing of Macs. I elected to use their VZ Navigator software, supposedly not necessary as I read later but I would probably install the VZ Navigator. It has an uninstaller if you want to remove it later. I have been seeing 1.4 Mbs down and 250 to 450 up. Much better then my 3 year experience with StarBand or SpaceNet and a lot cheaper up front cost. Aso the monitoring of the use, 5 Gbs a month is much more realistic then the satellite companies monitoring, which is really bad and frankly not accurate.
I suggest getting insurance coverage on the modem , 5 or 6 bucks a month but these modems are $250.00 to $300 bucks and 2 years is a long time to carry one around. It also will carry a 4 MB little disk so you can download to it also. If your in a weak signal area you can get amplifiers to boost weak signals. I am very happy with the UM USB 150. I have really been pushing it, using it 12 hours a day and no complaints. This is a new area so I have a lot of questions too, on setting it up for different areas and tweaking for the best speeds, but it's sitting on a pillow on a couch right now and it's raining in so cal and I am hitting 3 to 4 bars.

A Note on the Mac Book Pro, I have a friend and FWIW, he says in about 3 to 4 months Apple will release a quad core Mac Book Pro. Very fast. But there will always be faster, either way, it would mean a price drop on this current model, which is very good or a really fast machine that will see you through for many years. Good Luck and any use tips from your experience most appreciated.

Security on Verizon

Greetings,
I am the new Guy, I have used StarBand for the last 3 years and after far, far, to many problems, mostly SB coming up with Gigs used that were never really used, because, I was not here, power was off and they just do not have a good recording system, plus the outrageous pricing, I am my way out.

So I got this nice new UM USB 150 modem on my Mac Powerbook G4 1.67 Ghz system 10.4.11 2 Gig Ram and I am pretty happy. 1.4 mbs down and 200 to 400 kbs up. Now I have seen 700 kbs down, but for the most part it's been solid 1.4 and I am in a bad place for cell.

Security on the Mac, for those who do not have one, is pretty user controlled, spyware and virus protection is not really a hot topic. E mail encryption and whole disk encryption is sometimes used and I am leaning towards PGP for that.

But the new cell signal. It was set up at the Verizon Store. Is it secure and if not how bad. Is there a place where my user name and passwords can be changed around. Every time I try to go where I think it is, I end up in the sales department. How are the support guys, I can get them through the lack of Mac experience, if they know what their trying to do.

My Sat connection came in through SB modem, nothing there and into my base station, which I put up a reasonable defense at. I just wondered about this cell signal and if there is anything special I should be doing to protect myself. Verizon guy claimed signal was encrypted to 512 KB, then said maybe 250. KB Hmmm. BTW I also have a Rzor V3 and can get a new phone or device in april. The 150 modem has it's own dedicated line, cost $59.00 per month.
So I come to the well thirsty and seeking any and all information on how tackle this new device, which is a pretty cool thing . This tech is pretty new to me, but I think they are going to do very good with it and we will see expansion in power and speed at a pretty good pace. Any ideas most gratefully accepted and most kindly requested.

Enjoy
