| | Setting up DMAX / Coqui / PRTC DSL in a Dlink DSL-2320B Puerto Rico Telephone's DMAX Internet service is quite decent, but their supplied modems are very unreliable, need to be restarted and fail a lot in general.
I decided to replace my modem for a Dlink DSL-2320B which I found at CompUSA in Guaynabo. The task was a bit more complicated than expected so I post instructions here to set it up:
I assume you set up the equipment using the instructions on the box, and already know how to get to your modem configuration page at 192.168.1.1
Once there, you can start the Wizard and select these parameters:
1. Do NOT use the Auto-Configuration. Un-check that box and enter: VPI: 0 / VCI: 35. Click Next.
2. On Service Category select: UBR WITHOUT PCR. Click Next.
3. Connection Type: PPP over ATM (PPPoA), Encapsulation: LLC - This is important! Click Next.
4. On the PPP Username, you need to look at your old modem's serial number. In Speedtouch modems, it is the one that says CP0xxxxxxx. That serial number is your user AND password.
If you are replacing a 2wire modem, the username and password could be the serial number too, but it may also be your current Coqui / PRTC dial up user name and password if you are an older customer, which was my case.
If you are replacing a Zyxel Prestige modem, the user and password are definitively your Coqui Dial Up user and password (user without the @coqui.net, so if you are pedrorossello@coqui.net, you just type pedrorossello).
In any case, you can call Coqui support at 1-866-375-3375 and they usually give you the user and password without major problems.
5. On Authentication Method: AUTO
[ ]Dial on demand [x]PPP IP extension [ ]Keep Alive [ ]Use Static IP
(*) Obtain gateway automatically
Click Next, and Save.
6. THATS IT! You should be connected in a minute!
---------- PROBLEMS THAT MAY ARISE ----------
There is a known bug on the Dlink DSL-2320B that might screw you over and will not allow you to connect. In fact, when you finish the procedure I wrote, the modem will stop responding to 192.168.1.1 completely unless you reset it. It is a firmware bug, and you will need to install this alternate firmware on your modem.

Once you update, the modem WILL work on DMAX and it will even feel overall much quicker and responsive than the one they provide.
GOOD LUCK! |
