DSL - Switching to start.ca

I currently have ADSL with another provider, and POTS with Bell. If I switch to start.ca 50/10 VDSL I understand that there is no dry loop added cost. Can I switch first to start, keeping my POTS line and just drop it in a month let's say ? Any new fee or tech visit required then ? I'm currently testing freephoneline, and once I'm sure everything works well on the new provider would like to drop Bell, and port the phone number to FPL. I don't want to have the surprise that my VDSL drops then also.
Thanks.

Modem

Currently i am renting DCM476 from Start.

I am thinking about getting my own modem, so, i don't have to pay $5 monthly.

Question is, should i buy this modem of Start now or get brand new Modem? or maybe ship this one back to Start and ask for brand new modem? (not even sure if this is possible).

In case i decide to go with buying modem from different place, how would modem switch work? would there be any downtime?

rocca, what kind of warranty comes with used modems ?

Start is offering me current modem for: $90.34 (tax included)

Modem from Start so far doesn't have any problems (at least that i know of).

Thanks

Start VPN service

Hi Rocca, just wondering if you've ever consider/considering running a VPN service so Start customers can access US and UK geo blocked sites. It would be a great value added service for your customers, and I wouldn't think it would take too much effort on your part. Though I really have no bases for that.

Anyway, there are lots of work arounds out there, but most of the sources seem sketchy at best. I have used StrongVPN in past, but I'm no longer able to spend $60 a year for the couple of times I need access. Most recently I needed to activate Google Music. Just needed to log in once from US, then everything is fine from there.

Personally I don't mind if you keep logs, block P2P, traffic shape to make this work for you. Just need a trustworthy provider for occasional access.

Would like to know your thoughts.

Asus RT-N66U - Tomato Firmware Help

I know that this isn't usually the place to ask this question, but I am wondering if anyone can give me step by step instructions on how to upload Shibby Tomato firmware to the N66U router.

I have the latest 110 version and want to make sure I do this right so I don't brick the thing and be out $150 lol.... Last router I had was the Linksys WRT54GL and that had Tomato on it, and it was pretty straight forward.

Thanks guys

Modems for Elite Cable Package (150/10)

Hi,

I'm currently a (very happy) customer on the Pro Cable Internet package and I'd like to switch to the Elite Cable Internet package, but I have a a few questions.

1. Does my current Motorola Surfboard 6120 support 150/10? Also, even if I don't get optimal speed any idea what I would get up/down if I kept it (I'm more interested in 10 up then 150 down)?

2. Which modem does Start sell.reconnebd for 150/10 - how much?

3. Which other modems are supported for 150/10 (in addition to the verison that Start sells)

Thanks

New to Start, Cisco DPC3008 modem restarts daily ~7-8pm.

Hi, this is my first month with Start (switched from Cogeco). Over the past 3 days, I've noticed my (brand new) Cisco DPC3008 modem is restarting daily around 7-8pm. It usually happens when I'm maxing out my bandwidth downloading something. I'm assuming it's because of the firmware installed. I've put off calling tech support in hopes that new firmware will be pushed out. Am I correct in assuming one will be pushed out or should I go ahead and connect tech support?

I've attached my stats. Thanks in advance for you help.

Run ASUS RT N66U with factory firmware..or...?

My 6Mbps cable has been giving me a lot of trouble lately. I was told by support it was likely my old router (WRT54GL running tomato). I had a Dlink DIR 615 (running dd-wrt) available and tried that- connection was even worse. I do believe support is correct since, when I connect my PAP2T directly to the DCM476 it's fine..and speedtests are back to normal..as good as I'd expect for my 6Mbps service.
BTW - start support is extremely good - very helpful and willing to discuss options.
So, based on a gazzilion recommendations I've ordered an ASUS RT N66U - should I run with factory firmware or look into upgrading to something else (merlin?)?

I've developed a small tool to monitor usage directly from System Tray in Windows. If anyone is interested in trying it out.

This is not a bandwidth meter. This tool actually gets its data from Start server hence it'll only work for Start customers.

This is not an official tool. Just a quick program I wrote to save me time going to the site to check my usage.

DSL install turns to crap

More bad luck.

DSL install set for today.

ISW tech shows up before Bell tech. Does nothing. Leaves.

Bell tech shows up.

No connection from my apartment to the phone room. The riser is borked. He tells me that he will schedule the "riser repair crew" to come within 24 hours to repair the riser.

Fishing a new wire 4 floors? Within 24 hours? I have doubts.

I am a deeply unhappy Start customer at the moment.

Help me make the right decision.

I am still thinking about getting 150\10 service from Start.

Currently have 45\4 service.

I am heavy user, downloading a lot.

I am into Hosting business, so, there is tons of backups from my servers daily\nightly.

We have 4 PC's , 3 CellPhones, IPTV running on this service.

My son is watching Netflix all the time, Mickey Mouse !!! , my wife is watching IPTV all the time, and i am doing what i said i am doing above :P .

Do we need 150\10 ? Is it worth extra money in your opinion?

New 'Elite' tier in red areas

For people in 'red' areas, our new 150Mbps download and 10Mbps upload package is now available.

To take advantage of the awesome new speeds, you'll need a D3 cable modem capable of 8 channel bonding. If you're renting a modem from us, that's automatically taken care of. You'll also need a router that supports a gigabit LAN interface and has the CPU power for the extra speed. My personal recommendation is the ASUS RT-N66U (I really should get shares in this company by now), however a good review site is available at http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/lanwan/router-charts/view and shows the capability of lots of different models.

On the Fence: Start.ca

Hello all,

I've been with Teksavvy for a while now but am considering making the switch to Start mainly due to the 150/10 offering that is currently available - so that I can actually start (see what I did there?) doing some things that I've been planning for a long while now (live-streaming, etc). Additionally, I've been hearing and seeing increasing amounts of complaints about Teksavvy over the past several months which has me concerned for the long term.

However, the estimated prices for Teksavvy's equivalent 150/10 service when it rolls out will be $84.95/mo for 300GB vs. Start's at $99.95/mo for 400GB. After taxes, that is roughly a $17 difference in savings a month (~$200/yr) if I stay with Teksavvy (in theory)! Additionally, I rarely approach my 300GB download limit a month to begin with. While I can afford it, is it worth the hassle of switching ISPs? To me, Start is an unknown but with good recommendations.

I am sitting on the fence debating what I should do. Given that Teksavvy will be delayed in upgrades, and there are frequently delays out of their control, until at least late August for my area (Mississauga), it's becoming very tempting.

Since I am currently with Teksavvy, I am unsure how difficult it would be to transfer services with minimal, preferably no, downtime. Will I also obtain a new @start.ca e-mail address?

Have there been any major issues with Start? I realize I'm asking in the Start section but I figure honesty would be a good policy. How quickly are issues resolved? Do they typically oversell an area? Upgrades/maintenance/downtime schedule? What else should I know?

I know it seems silly but does anybody have any suggestions to nudge me (or other people in similar situations) one way or the other?

Usage Caps

Thank you for proving a reliable service and not overselling your POI's like some of your competition does, like the last company I was at. I am an extremely happy customer.

I have a feeling your service and speeds are so reliable and consistent due to your caps and slightly higher prices than some of the competition.

My only question or complaint is do you have any plans to provide an unlimited service in the future at a reasonable price?

My second question is do the download overage fees have a ceiling? My mother watches a lot of Netflix since she is retired, and she is already at 100GB just after 7 days of service. She doesn't pirate software or movies (and likely doesn't even know how to). So this may be a concern for her and of course me since I pay for the service in a roundabout way.

?

As soon as i remove split-er, it is around 42 - 44 dBmV.

I tried 2 different spliters, no luck.

It goes to up to 51 on channel 6 sometimes.

So far, i don't see any errors in logs \ internet problems, but, as Gone said, as it gets hotter, it will probably be worst then this.

300Gb usage and Streaming

Downloads aside I am wondering just how much would a 300Gb bandwidth cap suffice for heavy streaming or lots of streaming activity. I'm just trying to factor in how much streaming and bandwidth usage streaming would consume on a 45/4 Cable Internet connection from Start.
