Edit button vamooses if the post you wish to edit is 5 days or more old (DSLR system settings).

But you can still bump this thread, or start another and include a link to here if it matters.

There is also a limit to how long you can POST to a thread - more than a month, but not sure exactly.

high ping compare to Rogers

just plugged in the modem supplied by Start, did a speedtest.net, below is the result, d/l and u/l speeds seem ok , but ping seems kind of high (I don't know what is normal or high actually) compare to using the Rogers modem, I was getting between 10-16 ms ping time.

Why is the difference ? is it the modem or Start's service itself ?

Re: high ping compare to Rogers

Rocca, thanks for your help again, just a quick update.

Got the new modem , plugged it in yesterday, everything worked fine from 9 am to about 2 pm, then the WAN connection at the router disconnected , called tech support, have both router and modem hard resetted, everything worked from there on until today around 3 pm, WAN disconnected again, so I tried MAC address cloning , cloned my desktops MAC address to the router, WAN connected right away, then about 15 mins later, disconnected again, tried hard reset , power cycle etc , just couldn't get online, so I gave up and dig out my good old Linksys 54G router , now it seems to be working except I am experiencing hiccups, i.e.internet is up for a few minutes and would stop for a few and so on.

Another thing I noticed , not sure if it matters, is that when I used the 'new' Asus R56U, the flashing 'link' button on the modem was blue in colour , but now using the Linksys , it is flashing green instead.

I will go get another router over the weekend to do further testings..

Re: high ping compare to Rogers

Sounds like an arp issue. When you swap mac addresses around inside your network, the mac for the IP assigned to you changes and therefore is not reachable until the arp times out. For Cogeco it's not so bad because you have a 3 IP buffer, but for Red you only can register the 1. If any time you change whatever is plugged into the modem it's best to factory reset the modem, that causes it to register with the CMTS again, renews the DHCP lease and most importantly for your case, clears out the arp table. The same thing can be accomplished by waiting 30 minutes or so, but it's faster/easier to just hit the reset pin on the modem IMHO.

Re: high ping compare to Rogers

not sure what is arp issue, is that common ? because I wouldn't do mac cloning if the tech support rep didn't suggest me to try yesterday, and I would rather use the Asus N router vs the Linksys.. (I am not MAC cloning with the Linksys right now)

Re: high ping compare to Rogers

ARP is the protocol that maps an IP to a MAC address, ie the CMTS says "who has the mac address for the IP a.b.c.d", the device responds with it's mac address and then the CMTS can send packets to the mac address (ie ethernet is a layer2 protocol), it stores this in it's mac address cache for a certain length of time.

If you change the device and it has a new mac but the IP hasn't changed then the CMTS keeps sending it to the old mac address and it looks like it's unreachable to you. Additionally, when the router goes to request a new IP the CMTS says 'your connection has it's maximum # of IP's so no new IP for you'.

Factory resetting the modem fixes all this.

Personally my recommendation would be, clear out the mac cloning settings, put everything physically the way you want it, then factory reset the modem, wait for it to sync, reboot your router, should be golden...

Will cancelling Cogeco Cable TV affect Internet access?

Just called Cogeco to finally cancel Cable TV that I have replaced with several internet services. It has been a long time coming!

(If anyone is thinking of replacing Cable TV with something that costs $25/month, send me a PM)

The first rep I spoke to surprisingly still never heard of Start, and she didn't know whether cancelling my cable would cut off my Internet. She asked if I was sure I wanted to continue cancelling because it might disconnect me.
Of course I said yes, cancel it.

Once transferred to a disconnections agent, she was extremely helpful with cancelling the cable TV and providing me all the information on the final billing.
She also promised that the tech would not disconnect the Internet access that I am being provided by Start.

It is incredibly backwards that the best service I've ever received from Cogeco was from their disconnections agent.

Now I wait - until Dec 8th - to see whether the tech does it correctly.

Good to hear they didn't disconnect. When I first called to cancel Cogeco internet, the support person said they'd send a tech to disconnect the cable. Oddly, it didn't register in my mind till the next day. I called back and informed them that I was switching to Start and please do not disconnect my cable! This support person checked and said it wouldn't be disconnected. If you guys don't hear back from me on the 28th, you know what happened.

Browsers produces different speedtests ping

Hey all,

I noticed something recently and that is if I do speed tests from different browsers, it produces different ping tests.

For example:
Chrome Test:

IE9 Test:

Look at the ping result: IE9 is 10ms and chrome on the other hand is: 18ms. That's 8ms of difference.

Anyone has any explanation on this? Just curious...

Very slow speeds (London, ON)

My gf has been experiencing very very slow speeds in the last 2 weeks. She has called Start a few times but the issue remains. Tickets have been filed to Rogers, but they don't seem to care...

She has her computer plugged straight into the modem. The upload speed looks normal, but download speed is just horrendously slow.
Plan: 6/0.25mbps
Area: London, ON
Postal area: N6H

Anyone experiencing the same thing? And what should customers do when Rogers is being a piece ass and not giving a shit?

Speedtest:

Modem signal looks normal:

Re: Very slow speeds (London, ON)

In the same boat, but with Cogeco in St. Catharines though my speeds are no where as bad as yours.

Stable rock solid speeds all day except from 8ish - 1am, then expect 2-6 mbits down from 30. Cogeco says it congestion and doesn't care any more.

Was with Cogeco for over 12 years, only time I ever had congestion was almost 3 years ago (For a few months) and they fixed it.

My problems occurred 2 days after I switch to Start.

I don't believe Cogeco when they say it's congestion, I know someone on the same node down the street with Cogeco and he doesn't have any issues.

Can you PM me your account #? I'll take a look at the ticket. If you haven't already, please make sure you do a factory reset on the modem (ie hold the reset button in 15 seconds, all the lights will flash and it will start to scan for new channels again). Thanks.

Re: Very slow speeds (London, ON)

This is a very different issue than the OP which is in a Red area that has a known issue affecting both retail/wholesale and is being worked on, it's significant packet loss and looks like either a card or uplink error if I had to guess.

Fireblade looks like a profile issue, already on it.

Re: modem just stop sync - milton

Try a factory reset (log in at 192.168.100.1 and reset to defaults) and see if it comes back, if not give it an hour - could be an upgrade happening to your node (since it's early morning) or could be a local issue. If it's still happening in a couple hours please contact support@start.ca and we can get a ticket open for you. Thanks.

If you know anybody with cable TV or cable internet, you could try bringing your modem to their place to confirm that it still syncs up there. That will confirm that your modem is still working, which is always helpful to know.

Hooked Up Not connecting

Cogeco popped over and got me all hooked. Have a good signal coming in but when I hook it up to the modem, nothing comes in. Am I missing something?
Hopefully on a positive note they said I am the only person hooked on to that line so congestion should never be a problem.

Re: Hooked Up Not connecting

In The Red Zone this is typical. It takes a couple of hours after the technician leaves for them to "turn on" your modem. I vaguely recall that it isn't like this in Cogeco land, but some details on that might be helpful for future reference..

What a great support team.
Spent a good half hour with them trying many things and in the end all is well. Going to be loving this
Couldn't wrap my bell modem up quick enough to ship back
Speed with Bell was 5mb's on a good day.
Speed with Start is just shy of 32.

Thanks Rocca and the tech who helped me out

i logged in to 192.168.100.1 using admin/W2402 and all i got was the same status screen and broken Speedtest menu item and a link to Log Out.

where is the admin section where i should be able to factory reset, or view logs, etc? am i using the wrong credentials?

also, i am unable to even view 192.168.100.1 on any browser except IE. It keeps giving me a javascript warning and then displays the HTML markup from chrome, firefox, ipad safari, etc.

You don't need to be in admin mode to use the clear feature to put it to factory defaults. From what we can tell there is really nothing in the admin section that is different, we've asked our distributors, Cisco, searched high and low (as have others) and it doesn't seem like anyone can find any additional useful features/info as admin.

Sorry I was thinking of a different modem, it's the reset button on the back - hold it in for 10-15 seconds until the lights flash and it will reset itself. Thanks.

SLOW - 30/2 First few days, now constant 17/1 and below

when i first switched over from cogeco (a company which i NEVER had any issues with speed before) to Start I was expecting 30/2 down/up as i signed up for.
i had these speeds constantly the first few days of service, now since yesterday i have had incredibly slow speeds (at least for me) of 17/1 and sometimes even half of that!

i called support already and did ping tests and speed tests. i did a factory reset of the modem and a power reset just to be sure, and even with my pc connected directly to the modem i have exactly half (17/1) of my speeds. they told me to keep monitoring my speed with tests over the next day to check and see if its maybe just slow speeds due to people in my area and peak hour. but i seriously doubt thats the case as this issue starts in the early afternoon (when i first am able to see it) and continues all into the night with no increase or decrease, it basically just stays at exactly half of my promised speeds.

is there anything else i can do?
could it be my modem? i only got it last week and havent been using it too long so i hope its something simple like that, and its rented not bought.

switching to start

Hi, I am moving in a month (on the 15th) and currently with teksavvy. Teksavvy cannot service the area I am moving to but you guys can.

So I called teksavvy to cancel for the 14th, they said that since my billing schedule is on the 23rd that they would cancel for 22nd, not knowing any better I agreed.

Then I signed up for start, said I was providing my own modem.
They called me back today saying that they cannot provision my modem until it is deactivated from teksavvy account
So called back teksavvy and they said they cannot change my cancellation date...

I don't want to have to pay approx $130 for another modem nor do I want to go a week without internet...

I see that you guys do modem rental.. is it possible that I can do a 1 month modem rental, then switch the modem to the one that I own?

Upcoming maintenance

We are adding a second link to Cogeco this week, either Wednesday or Thursday at midnight. We don't anticipate any downtime and will be monitoring the upgrade closely during this time. This will double our connection with them to help keep us ahead of any capacity issues. Once complete we will update this thread to advise it's been completed successfully.

We are also going through the same process with Red in early December and will post more details as available.

Doc2 or Doc 3 with Cogeco

A little confused now.
When I first got connected last week I was pulling in 32/2{just shy}
now its 16/1
The 32 would be doc 3 speed but when I type in my postal code it shows the most that I can get is doc 2.
My question is if I was getting it to start shouldn't that mean that doc 3 speeds are available here all the time?
I see Reds advanced is 28/1 why the difference in Blues? or why isn't the 28 available at the same price?

Re: Doc2 or Doc 3 with Cogeco

Hi, I replied to your other message in the other thread about the profile issue, working on getting them to sort it out, should be good shortly.

As for the pricing for speeds between Red and Blue, that's just due to the retail speeds they have and the differences in tariff pricing, etc.

Slow Download Speeds -- Kingston

I have been seeing slower than usual speeds on the downstream the last few weeks during the evening. Here are some speedtests from around 10:30-11:00 pm tonight.

After these first two tests I did the whole press and hold the reset button on the DPC3000 for 30 seconds + for a full reset and rebooted the router too. Speed results improved slightly but still all over the place.

If I am awake late enough for the speeds to return to normal I will update later tonight. I can also post some tests tomorrow during the day for comparison.

Weirdest thing just happened

Sometime around 2:45am, my cable service did the oddest thing and I think it lost sync for about 15 mins, just came back up about 5 minutes ago. I'm located in North Oshawa on the DC/UOIT campus, the townhouses. Anyone in that general area experience something similar this morning or within the last few days?
