wonky routing in Oakville

Can get to some stuff, other stuff, not so much. In fact most stuff, not so much at the moment.

Probably not Start's fault but hopefully there's someone on the case ...

yes rocca, but that's probably just the routing between that server and netflix. I tried others and they show it is up. Sounds like some routing issues in the big, big pipes somewhere to me. Odd that Google DNS is fixing it for some users, maybe google knows something we don't

Could have been an AWS to HE issue? Either that or we killed the sessions at the same time they sorted things out. Haven't restored them yet. Probably wait until tomorrow when things settle down.

There was another peering issue with HE (which are very common). We heard from several customers last night who are multi homed with HE as one of their upstreams and as soon as they dropped their routes everything was fine. One of those customers had Cogent as a secondary provider and had an issue as well but it was never confirmed back to us.

Hey there.

Living in Petawawa, and have had Bell for nearly 7 or 8 years now. I've moved around the town so much in the past 7 or 8 years, and it seems like no matter where I end up, the DSL is garbage.

Here is what $60+ a month is getting me right now:

Anyways, just wanted to check out some providers available here, and since obviously my current residence (North Side PMQ's) is too far from the node, DSL is not an option. Just checking some of the posts around here, and it blows me away anyone gets 20Mbps, let alone upwards of 50. I have to pause any youtube video I try and watch these days so it can load sufficiently. I think I had a 56k dialup as a kid that was faster.

Anyways, any point in going ahead an purchasing the Motorola SB6141 on my own now, or just go ahead with the technicolor from Start when I do make the switch? As it stands now, just waiting for my contract with Bell to expire in July so I can get rid of all of their garbage services.

Also, what Routers are you guys using? I wanted to make the switch to Start overall to save a bit of money, so the new Netgear Nighthawk X6 ain't exactly what I need financially. That said, the only device in my house that I could really care about being 802.11ac is my primary computer. Although I would like to stream video to the TV as I'll obviously be kicking the satellite to the curb.

Any thoughts and or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. At this point, I'm just so tired of throwing nearly a $70 a month away to take a couple hours to update steam at these awful speeds.

I think I remember seeing that upload usage isn't actually calculated with your total usage, and that only download is measured.

I have reached my usage limit for the first time in 2 years, and the only change in behaviour is I've started to stream to Twitch in the last month.

I didn't expect this to affect my usage total since I thought upload wasn't measured, but I may be totally wrong there.

After yet another price increase, I am looking at leaving Bell where I have had 15/10 DSL service for several years; it was tweaked to 16.1/11.32 so that I would actually get 15/10 in the real world.

Start only offers 15/1. I asked sales if they were going to offer 15/10 and was told they did not know but thought any changes in their offerings would not happen soon since they just modified them recently. Any of the Start staff here have any information with regard to upcoming speed changes?

I also asked if Start would tweak my profile as Bell did and was told that as a matter of policy, Start would not do that. Any of the Start staff here have any information in this regard?

Thanks

I have just signup Start's ADSL2+ (15/1) service. Bell technician came installed the line yesterday but the service has yet up and running. My modem is frequently disconnected and reconnected every several minutes, and cannot get any internet connection. Bell technician said my line to the CO is not good but both his meter and the modem status showed I can get >10mbps downstream. Can anyone tell me how is my line quality from the attached pic?

I have been a paying customer of Start Communications for over a year now.

To be honest, the initial service quality was ok, then over several months degraded to average, then consistently poor. Finally I called (now five calls on record) - and the specific - diagnosed-by Start.ca - deplorable service that was reported on earlier calls has been reconfirmed by later calls. On each call the issue was diagnosed the same - zero or near-zero upload ... yet the issues were never resolved. And periodically, and only when I followed up ... several times, I might see some pennies credited for poor service. Not feeling the love!

Finally last month, when I made it clear I was prepared to permanently leave Start.ca as a very unsatisfied customer, one adventurous rep remarked how generous and responsive I still was (in spite of what Start.ca had put me through for a year). More importantly, he was stumped why nobody at Start.ca previously had suggested swapping my modem, in case the issue was there.

I received the swapped modem next day and then within the prerequisite transfer time, turned it on. For the first time since I have been paying for Start Communications (12+ months), I experienced comparatively lightning speeds. So now after 12+ months of deplorable service quality, that was resolved for the first time.

Now it was time to satisfy me for all my time wasted by them and wasted payment for full service, not receiving it. Their response: we'll credit you $10 for the lack of service quality. They even had the audacity to ask: 'Is that ok?' I'm sure you can guess my response. Two weeks later, I received a voicemail that matter-of-factly told me that they were crediting me for one month ($29). Is that all the 'love' they can muster for the fiasco that they created and that has lasted MANY months too long, unresolved.

And what of the Start.ca modem that I was forced to purchase for ~80+tax - the modem that never worked properly - and caused the fiasco and all my wasted time so many months: "Oh that modem belongs to you, you can keep it or sell it if you like." Excuuuuuse Meeeee?????

So I turn to you my colleagues (including I see some representing Start.ca), what are your professional suggestions on next steps? To date, I have had no further response from Start.ca. None.

Possibly looking to try out Start's VDSL products and just have a few questions.

I'm looking to rent a modem first just to try out the service for stability before I buy one. Which models are available for rental? I'm also assuming the modem will be couriered to me, is there a shipping charge to have the modem sent to me and is there a shipping charge to send the modem back to Start if I decide to buy my own modem or cancel the service?

Lastly, I've disconnected the Bell demarc from my inside wiring because I have my VoIP ATA feeding all the jacks in my house now. Will there be an extra charge to have this reconnected, and will they be able to install the service without interfering with the VoIP service?

Thanks.

Hello,

Past couple days, webpages don't always load, youtube has the same problem. Getting a lot of spikes. Already restarted router/modem. I've done tracert and ping to google, and there's drops going on.

So I'm thinking of switching to Start but have a few questions before I go through it.

1. I'm on cable, if I go DSL do I have to pay the install fee or any other fee for that matter?

2. Any big difference between cable vs dsl?

3. How long does it usually take the process to make through.

Thanks for reading.

In trolling some older posts on these forums, I see there is a adsl2+ profile of 19,485/1085 . Is this profile still available?. I believe I could handle it on my standard fttn with Start.

Stats:

Downstream Upstream

SNR Margin (dB): 22.2 9.5
Attenuation (dB): 9.0 4.3
Output Power (dBm): 12.3 12.2
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 28336 1169
Rate (Kbps): 17983 1085

Re: [DSL] Profile for adsl2+

I checked, 17/1 is the highest profile available on your line.

Typically 19/1 is only available to 16/1 connections.

And 16/1 has been grandfathered for quite some time.

Lately for about two weeks now my upload speed has been unstable ranging around 0.5 to 5.0 Mpbs on the 30/10 cable package in Hamilton. Download speed is fine and stable at 30Mpbs but its only my upload speed that has problems. Anyone know what could be wrong?

Re: Upload speed unstable

Have you done some basics such as:

* Factory resetting the modem
* Connecting with a computer direct to the modem
* Make sure youre using »start.speedtest.net

If you have, I'd recommend giving the support department a call tonight in the next 40-ish minutes to do some troubleshooting and see if a ticket is required (or over the weekend).

Your signal levels however are all with in spec.

Having issues lately with my PS4 reporting "router does not support ip fragmentation" I have tried 2 routers, several different MTU's and at different times of the day. Issue won't go away and I'm finding I lag really bad in games. I'm currently running an HP dl360 with dual gigabit running pfsense firewall as a router into a dlink gigabit switch. I have tried plugging straight into the modem as well and it doesn't help.

Re: The Google/youtube report

Interesting.

Of course, when I click on the link, it geolocates to MY area instead of yours.

One flaw in the case of independent ISPs (such as START) is that the test does not split the results up based upon which incumbent is feeding the subscribers.

For example, for my area, there should be separate graph for each of START-Cogeco, and START-Bell.

Hi guys,

I just got set up with start today and have run in to a bit of a problem. I reset the modem to default settings after playing around with it a bit and now I can't seem to log back in.

I have tried the password supplied with the modem, as well as the default admin/admin, neither of them work.

Has anyone else run in to this problem? Any tips?

Thanks!
