Nexicom Wireless featured in local news

BROADBAND GRANT: Unwired payoff
Peterborough County leading rural wireless revolution

By Examiner Staff
Editorial - Tuesday, August 28, 2007 Updated @ 3:00:35 AM

Three years ago, Peterborough County got nothing but dead air when it applied for $1 million from Queen’s Park and Ottawa to bring wireless Internet access to remote parts of the county.

More than $50 million was on the table but none of it came Peterborough’s way. Part of the reason was that the Greater Peterborough Area Economic Development Corp. mishandled the application.

Back then the GPAEDC was in state of administrative turmoil. Faced with a tight deadline, it submitted an application on behalf of the county that was missing some key information. Predictably, the application was rejected.

County officials and politicians weren’t happy, and the failed grant request contributed to the disgruntlement that almost caused the county to pull out of its partnership with the City of Peterborough in the GPAEDC.

However, they didn’t just sit at their keyboards and complain. Recognizing that an old, slow dial-up Internet service wasn’t going to allow existing businesses to compete or attract new ones, county councillors started to invest local tax dollars.

In partnership with Nexicom, a Millbrook-based Internet provider, the county spent $1 million to build 11 transmission towers that brought a broadband signal to resorts and communities that otherwise wouldn’t have high-speed service.

It was a far-sighted investment, and not one that many rural communities were making.

The immediate payoff was competitive, 21st-century communication access for businesses and residents. Resorts could offer bookings over the Internet. Small businesses could deal with customers across the country, or around the globe. Cottagers could stay in touch with home and work. Suddenly there was easy access to MSN, Facebook and YouTube – no small thing in the lives of teenagers.

Now that payoff in technological competitiveness has been extended to cold, hard cash. After being shut out from previous provincial funding, Peterborough County has been given $1 million from a new, $10-million broadband fund.

The money will help pay for seven more towers and extend coverage to 90 per cent of the county where there are clusters of population.

Significantly, the grant represents 10 per cent of all available funding and is $300,000 more than the county asked for. Seventeen other municipalities are sharing the rest. That disproportionate share is likely in part a make-up for the previous rejection, but also recognizes how far Peterborough County has come on its own.

County officials believe they have the best developed rural broadband network in the province, all done with local money and a local private sector partner. That’s the kind of performance that should, and apparently did, impress the decision makers at Queen’s Park.

And while there is no federal money available at the moment, the county’s forward-thinking commitment should also lock in a strong connection when Ottawa does release more money for broadband development.

Even if no grants had materialized, the county’s investment in a wireless network that the private sector wasn’t going to provide on its own was the right call. Now that decision looks to be wired for sound . . . and video . . . and telephone service . . . and banking . . .

Keene

@nexicom.net

What is happening with Nexicom's service level?

What has happened to the service? On two levels: First, Speed has dropped significantly in the last few weeks. Downloading a simple pdf file from the local university takes forever. 39KB/s.

Second, Tech support is always busy. "leave your name and number and we will get back to you." BS. When I spoke to your front line person (before getting transfered to tech supp answer machine) she advised me "if your not happy with the speed maybe you should reduce your service to dial up" WTF?

I live in Hiawatha and realize there are service issues but to suggest I reduce my service is not appropriate.

What I really want to know is. What has changed in the past two months to effect speed? And when will it return to its previous condition?

btw, I am waiting on my second call back because I missed the first. A call back system for customer service will be the demise of your company. Hire more staff. We all pay enough for it.

Hi there..

Can you PM me your phone number and I'll have someone look into it right away?

Sorry to hear you're having issues. Also, can you clarify your speed as being 39KB/s or 39Kb/s?

If you do get talking to the helpdesk please ask them for the ticket # so we have a reference point to work from....

IS Keene too slow to bother with Turbo?

Hi I live in Keene and have been a turbodsl subscriber for some time, but never noticed any speed increases when the advertised speed went up - should I revert to the 1.5 meg service if my downloads (local) are stuck at 1200 kb or 150 kB?

I was unable to locate nexicom's own site test -- looks like you're moving things around - clicking on the (somewhat buried ) link for it takes you to a 404 error

cheers

Hi there..

I got your PM and looked up your profile. Your connection is currently connected to g.lite based gear (older).

A work order has been created here to migrate you to ADSL2+ platform - might take a day or two. Someone will followup to ensure you're getting the maximum speed your line can support.

Any questions, feel free! Myself and bbuchana frequent these forums often and both of us can help....

Speed

Is anyone else upset over the speed of Nexicom? I live in peterborough and I just signed up for their 5mpbs turbo dsl. From doing speed tests I only reach about 1.7mbps tops. It's driving me crazy since i'm paying for 5mpbs and I have to deal with this for a year.

Re: Speed

Hi peachey777,

DSL speeds all depend on the distance you are from the DSL equipment.

I'll send you a message with more info, but the speeds that you are getting are pretty much all that you can get.

We can move you over to our CLEC ADSL2+ based DSL and your speeds should go up, but I can't guarantee what it will go up to.

Speed drop lately

Hi:
I'm on TurboDSL in Buckhorn, my line is close to edge of service, was first provisioned at 5M but was turned back to 3M because of losing the signal. I used to get around 2M speed regularly, often as high as 2.4M. Lately I have been getting at best 6 to 700K down and about the same up.

Has there been a service change in this area or something? Speed is pretty poor especially given what I'm paying.

Thanks.

line quality test

I did a line quality test and it fails, this is part of what I got back.

Simple ping loss check
10secs of 40byte packets 2 per second 0% loss 75.3ms 76.1ms 77.2ms
pass
low bandwidth stream
10secs of 56k/bit ping stream 512byte packets 68% loss 82.7ms 84.4ms 114ms
fail
medium bandwidth stream
10secs of 128k/bit ping stream 512byte packets 80% loss 82.6ms 84.0ms 86.9ms
fail
your first hop ping
stream of 40byte pings to 66.79.230.138 0% loss 27.8ms You are 47ms
to your first hop
pass

I did this test on Feb. 7th when my speed was at 1.8M and everything passed. So I'm assuming this means there are problems on my line?

Thanks for responding.
It's a Dlink DSL-300G, one of your modems. The speed is like this pretty much all the time. I ran the line quality test again the other day and got the same results, failed in the two middle tests. I ran the speedtest.net test again just before the line quality test and I was getting 1.4 Mb/s, 120 ping, a little better but still feels very slow compared to what it used to be.

Extremely happy :D

I'd like to report to you all I'm currently hooked up with this service and am extremely happy with it. I get amazing speeds well over the advertised numbers (For me the advertised download is less than my upload).

I'm in the Bridgenorth area and it was a much better choice than, the not available to me, bell connection.

Okay so I didn't have any problems at all till today when I got back home and the modem light on my router was flashing saying that it wasn't working...

I unplugged it and then plugged it back in. Nothing.
I unplugged it and plugged it back in an hour later. Nothing.
I unplugged it and my router and plugged them back in 20 minutes later. Nothing.
I've now been able to get online by plugging it directly to my PC. This has gotten my back on the internet but not much more. The pages I host from my PC cant be reached from outside my own PC now. Sending email through my webhost is extremely slow. I'm not getting anywhere near the speeds I was reaching last night.

Were there changes to the network at some point today? it seemed to be working perfect this morning before I left.

EDIT: This has since resolved itself. speeds are still a little bellow what they were but are much better than they were.

Hi again, just wondering if there was any work being done lately or anything like that. the night before last my connection went down about 8:15pm (I was watching a movie and fell asleep) and it resolved itself by morning and I didn't notice it except my IRC client wasn't connected anymore. Last night though it went off about 8:30pm (same thing, was watching a movie and fell asleep, gotta stop doing that) and woke up at 5:30 this morning and the connection was still down. Ran through the same steps as before but got nowhere. It wasn't up at 8:30 when I left but was when I got home around 2:30... Any ideas?

I've used a little, but not a whole lot more, than this time last month so don't think it would be that...

Anyone else having problems or am I an unwanted customer? Perhaps they're trying to squeeze me out because I use to much email?

Still getting kicked off

Just got part way through downloading my emails and I got kicked off again. Of course Nexicom's program won't let me back into my mail now for 30 minutes so I'm beat.

Every time it restarts downloading, it starts again at the beginning so I get multiple copies of whatever made it through before. I've often ended up with four copies of some emails. Makes my Inbox go from 80 emails to over 200 often.

Darn annoying... Any suggestions for a better dial up ISP in the Bancroft/L'Amable area? A more reliable company?

Re: Still getting kicked off

Have you talked to our helpdesk about this yet?

Bikey - Your help desk stopped responding to my emails months ago.

What kind of modem are you running?

Bikey - AOpen FM56-SW Soft PCI Modem... from my Device Manager. It was installed several months ago after my old one died, possibly from the many power bumps we get in town. I installed it in a different slot to make sure the slot was okay.

Also, can you elaborate on the 30 minutes thing? There's no 30 minute grace between downloading email so confused as to what this is referencing...

Bikey - Well, there's something there. I was told a long time ago that you had a security(?) program that locked out access to email after the download was interrupted. If I try to get right back in, I usually end up with a message. I can't remember the text of it though. If I wait for the 30 minutes I get can usually get back in okay.

Bikey - Thanks for looking into this.

Just ran another speed test. 29Kbps, one of the higher readings I've ever gotten. Nice.

My modem died a week or so ago, second this year, and I've been using an older laptop till this weekend. Now that I'm back using the same equipment, things are going well. I can get on line usually first try, I can get my emails without being kicked off, I don't get kicked off while surfing, altogether an enjoyable experience so I'd have to say that, yes, you've fixed whatever problem I had.

Thanks for your help.

Man-----Bad Speeds and Choppy Connection

I moved in with my parents for awhile to watch their house. They have NRTCO internet which topped out at just over 200Kb up and down. I got dad to call and upgrade to their next and only higher tier for 45 a month. Supposed to be 5Mb. Testing shows about 1200Kb down and 600 up. It stalls and starts on the test which obviously hurts the results.
I have played around all day and this is as good as it gets? Hard to take after 16Mb pro with cogeco.
Anything else I can do to improve the speed? If not I guess sympatico is my only choice here.

Well--multiple phone calls, hours of time trying to sort this out only to be told we have to wait for Bell to "check the lines" NRTCO is about to lose a customer. Took 4 minutes for this page to load-----less than dialup speeds. It seems to be much better at night---speeds will reach around 600kilobits down and the same up.
During the day it's unusable. It was a week waiting for the upgrade and now 3 days with unusable internet.

Well its been a couple months now and the speeds are maxed out at a little over a megabit down and 400 kilobits up. Was told that's what we can expect to get. At around 50 bucks a month it's not worth it to me. I suck up a lot of bandwidth watching video and such and when others get on it screws their experience up.
I am looking at switching to cogeco cable----if only for myself.

No IPv6 at this time, but it's not far away. Our core and distribution networks are all dual-stack today - it's just been a "time challenge" to offer it to end users.

Tried this morning to get on SpeedTest but cannot run a test? Yesterday morning I was 136 / 533. Called Help desk and they supplied a new Modem I was 2570 / 677 and thought we had the problem fixed. But last night things slowed down again and I was 830 / 621 so I believe there may still be a problem. I will be away for a couple a days if the problem persists I will call into the help desk again.

Turbo DSL 20 Mbps

Is this still limited to the downtown area? If so are there plans in the future to expand? As I live in south Ptbo near Kenner. When I tried TekSavvy (before I knew about Nexicom) a year ago, I could not get better than 2900/600 range of speeds. It seems it was the Bell lines that are "slow" with TERRIBLE line stats and not my inside wiring after doing all the tests and checks etc..Can Nexicom improve on these speeds in any way?

Re: Turbo DSL 20 Mbps

Hi There,

We can only deliver services to those people fed from the Host (ie Hunter St. CO) in Peterborough. Bell won't give us access to anyone off of a remote (other than through the wholesale arrangement).

That being said, when I was on Bell DSL before being the first guinea pig on our own dslam in Peterborough, i was on the 1184 profile. I'm now running at a borderline 5008 x 894 (i've had sync for 44 days at this rate).

If i bring it down to the standard 4Meg profile the line stats improve substantially.

I can't guarantee anything if you are fed from the host, but things might get better. Our dslam runs at ADSL2+ so it can usually give better speeds at greater distance.

If you register, you can PM me your address and I can lookup to see if you are host/remote.

Slow speeds, constant disconnects

Title says it all. I used to rave about Nexicom to friends and co-workers. Now all I can talk about is constant disconnects, choppy streaming media, slow internet speeds. What makes it worse is I'm a late night user, so I shouldn't be having any of these issues. 1am - 6am and I can't even watch a 1 minute media clip without having the video constantly "buffering".

Anyone else suffering the same issues I am?

Re: Slow speeds, constant disconnects

Sorry to hear of any issues you may be having - can you tell us where you are geographically and which service you have?

Also, have you contact our help desk with any of these concerns?

Re: Slow speeds, constant disconnects

I'm in Millbrook, just a hope skip and jump away from one of your offices.

Example:

Over the last 2 hours, I have lost connectivity a countless number of times. Task manager shows my connection flatlining intermitently every 20 seconds to 2 minutes. It's incredibly painful trying to get work completed and submitted before my 7am meeting when I can't stay on long enough to get anything worthwhile done.

Re: Slow speeds, constant disconnects

Ahh.. ok - I would suggest calling the helpdesk and asking for a linetest to be completed. They may suggest you pickup a new modem as well.

Between the line test and new modem, one of those will hopefully resolve your issue.

If you still don't have resolution drop a line here by all means....

thanks!

Have you contacted the helpdesk by chance yet?

I tried to look you up to see if you have the same username here as you do with us, but with no luck.
