| Cable internet packet loss I moved into a new house near Spring Lake. I had the option of CenturyLink DSL 3Mbps or Cass Communications (4, 7, or 10 Mbps). I opted to go with the 7 Mbps for $59/month.
I have had problems with it from day one. I get horrible speeds (less than 1 Mbps) and have bad packet loss. I call the CassComm office almost every day about my problem. On four different occasions they told me that a technician would be out the next day. A tech only showed up 1 out of 4 times.
I finally got DSL hooked up and called to cancel my cable internet. I requested a refund and things finally started escalating. I was able to talk to a supervisor who put me in contact with their Telephone & Internet Manager. He could verify my speed problems on their end and is going to keep an eye on it for me.
On a side note, they just got equipment to launch DOCSIS 3.0 in the Havana/Manito area. I'm going to stick it out with them and hope that the upgrades solve some of my problems.

| Re: Cable internet packet loss I had the same problem you are having for a couple of reasons. My wireless went south and I didn't know it, plus the upgrade was system wide which took longer than I expected. However now that it is done in my area I pull a steady 7/.5 and it does exactly want I expect.
I tested the 10/2 for a week and loved it, but opted against it because I really can't afford it and I don't do anything to warrant the extra expense. Personally I would like to see FTTH 20/20; I won't happen in rural America in our lifetime.
What I like is Cass does not cap or throttle. What all cable companies do is not offer much up in way of bandwidth stream on the slower speeds; they all do the same thing; so does telco. What I do like is the tech support. I've always had superior results. What I don't like is the new IMAP mail through Google. But, and this is a big but... they don't have all the kinks worked out yet. It is nothing new; it is annoying.
I've been through major system upgrades in three states with six or seven ISPs both cable and phone. It is a giant pia to everyone. I've been on Cox, AT&T, Suddenlink, Century Telephone, Cass and four other small cable companies - two of which are now owned by large ISPs. IMHO, the only telco worth playing with is Bell. I was six blocks from the CO on a Loopback. It was off line 30 minutes once in four years and there was never a speed issue down or up.
CenTel or Century Telephone was an expensive experiment in Mason County that failed from start to finish from old wiring and an office with aging equipment that is only open 30 minutes a day to clueless tech support and bald faced lies. I'm six blocks from the CO and never reached anything close to what they called broadband speed - which is roughly 10x faster than 28.8 dialup. That's not much more than a 256Mb connection. This is 1/6th of the alleged 1.5 download. It may have screamed in Pekin but I guarantee it did not in Manito or Sand Lake or Forest City or Havana or Bath or Kilborne or Oakford or Teheran or anywhere else in Mason County. And it cost me $1000 to learn the secret handshake. The telephone service was worse than pitiful. Today I have a cell, and VOIP, cable and Internet.
You sit tight. Contact me privately and will see what i can do for you.

| Re: Cable internet packet loss Thanks for the info.
I tried sticking it out with them until their DOCSIS 3.0 was launched. One guy told me that the upgrade was complete and another told me that it wasn't.
My speed started being better & more consistent, but I was still getting packet loss. They sent a tech out and he told me that some packet loss is normal for my area. WRONG!!!

| Re: Cable internet packet loss The word complete is subjective. The DOCSIS 3.0 may be completed in Mason County, but not in another county. or in Mason City and not Kilbourn or Goofy Ridge or Bath for that matter. I only know of one head-in in Mason County and it is in Easton - which is fer piece from you.
User + Distance = packet loss. The question is how much. The farther you are from the CO, the better the chance of packet loss. You can also see a loss IF you hit a bottleneck. IF you hit a server that is extremely busy, IF you hit a slow server that needs an equipment upgrade, IF traffic is re-routed; IF there is an outage, IF, IF, IF. A busy squirrel can kill your internet connection. A bad wireless device can slow your computer. Weather is great equalizer, so are viruses and malware.
I had nothing but rural internet service for more than 15 years. The bottom line is this: It is very rare to pull advertised speeds and not have some packet loss. I don't care who the provider is or where they are located. It has much to do with your distance from the equipment serving your area, software, modems, routers, cable connections, switches, routing, fiber breaks, problems with equipment coming into the house, older computers, etc. Also packet loss can be mis-reported on occasion.
Go to speakeasy.net and run their test to Chicago and tell me what the results are. -- Mac: No windows, No Gates, Apple inside
