YAK Bundle

Anyone in Toronto using YAK Communications? I was just wondering what the experience has been thus far. I have signed up for the 5 mbps with phone service with 2 features for about $70 a month. One thing I like about this service is you don't have to sign up for pre authorized payment method, which means they can't steal money from your bank account. I found that Primus and others all require PAP now-a-days, however with the amount of billing problems that occured with Bell that I would have to call each month it was worth trying the old school billing methods and this improves my accounting skills.

If anyone has any experiences or info please comment.

Am I just unlucky or is Yak committing fraud?

I suspect Yak has been defrauding me for almost a year by deliberately charging me for services that were never delivered. I would really like to know if anyone else has had experiences similar to mine. Here's my story.

I had been irritated by Bell's business model of ever-raising prices coupled with ever-reducing service levels for a long time. Finally, last summer I switched my home phone and dsl to Yak's "Fully Loaded" phone/dsl bundle. According to the Yak website, this includes "Up to 5 Mbps download speed and Up to 1 Mbps upload speed", local phone, 400 minutes of long distance phone, voicemail, call display, caller ID, call waiting, unlimited call forwarding, and unlimited 3-way calling. I opted to pay an extra $5/mo to add visual call waiting.

While with Bell, I had - and consistently saw - 5 Mbps dsl, as well as several phone features including call display, caller ID, unlimited call forwarding, unlimited 3-way calling. and visual call waiting. However, I did not have voicemail on the line while I was with Bell. So I periodically tried the *98 thing on the phone, to see if it had been activated, since this would indicate that the switchover had occurred.

A few weeks later I received my first bill from Yak, which included billing for the previous month as well as the next month. Still no voicemail, still no modem or instructions for the dsl setup, so I wondered why Yak was billing me for a bundle that had not been delivered.

I called their customer service line, and was informed that the phone switchover had occured the previous week. The dsl stuff was on the way, and would be activated the following week. As far as the voicemail was concerned, the customer service rep had no explanation except to blame Bell for "losing the order", which Bell did "all the time". As a disaffected Bell customer, this made complete sense to me, and I accepted the explanation without question. The voicemail was activated the same day. I was also promised credit for the period that I was still paying Bell, and this was quickly arranged.

I received the dsl modem and switched over to Yak with minimal difficulty. The included setup instructions neglected one crucial change to the modem's default settings, but a call to customer service resolved that quickly. I did note that the modem itself identified the line as a 3Mbps service rather than a 5Mbps service, but I was so pleased to have left Bell (yes, I know that Yak is just a Bell reseller, but it still felt good) that I didn't really care. Then I discovered that Bell was still my long-distance provider.

Another call to Yak, another apology with the explanation that Bell "lost the order", which Bell did "all the time". Meanwhile, I was paying Bell for long distance while I expected to be taking advantage of the 400 minutes that were included as part of my "Yak Fully Loaded" bundle. This was annoying, and if I had been paying more attention I might have noticed signs of a suspicious pattern, but I bought the explanation and sympathized with the CS rep. After all, I knew first hand just how useless Bell could be. The long distance change occured a few days later, as promised.

Keep in mind this happened last summer. Fast forward to last weekend. My wife and I had to go out to run a number of errands, but we did not want to risk missing an important phone call. I knew we had call forwarding as part of our Yak bundle, so I did the *72 thing. Guess what? No call forwarding! I called Yak and was informed that Bell "lost the order", which Bell did "all the time". The Yak CS rep called Bell while I held, and for reasons that were not clear, said the Bell rep needed my cell number. Okay, why not?

While my wife and I were out, the cell phone rang. It was the Bell rep, who was surprised to be speaking with the customer. Evidently she had requested the reseller number, but the Yak CS rep did not hear her correctly. She was apologetic, and said she could not activate call forwarding because it had note been ordered by the reseller. I smelled a rat at this point. When we returned home, I tried the conference call feature. I was not surprised that it had not been activated either.

To recap, while with Bell, I had 5 Mbps dsl, call display, caller ID, unlimited call forwarding, unlimited 3-way calling. and visual call waiting.

With Yak, I pay for 5 Mbps dsl, call display, caller ID, unlimited call forwarding, unlimited 3-way calling. visual call waiting, and voicemail.

If Yak had not activated call display, caller ID, and visual call waiting, this would have been obvious soon after my local service was switched. But Yak did activate these services, without any problems of "lost orders".

The remaining phone services would not be missed unless the customer tried to use them. In my case, that occurred with all of the customer-initiated services - unlimited call forwarding, unlimited 3-way calling, and voicemail. It also occured with my long distance service. My 5Mbps dsl is in fact 3Mbps, although the line supported 5Mbps for years prior to my switch to Yak.

Yak is billing me for unlimited call forwarding, unlimited 3-way calling, and 5 Mbps service. (Yak also billed me for voicemail and 400 minutes long distance when neither service was provided, although those issues were resolved). Either Yak is paying Bell to provide services to me that Bell is not providing, or Yak is collecting money from me which should be forwarded to Bell, but pocketing the money instead.

The constant Yak refrain that Bell "lost the order", which Bell does "all the time" leads me to suspect deliberate criminal fraud. If this has happened to other Yak customers, please post about it here. If there is evidence of a deliberate pattern of fraud, I will complain to the police.

Thanks.

Re: Am I just unlucky or is Yak committing fraud?

I just left acanac running over a bell line getting consistent 5Mbps to go to Yak for dsl and phone (fully loaded) and sure enough it dropped to 3Mbps. I called them and they tried to tell me that Bell assessed my line and it was only capable of supporting 3Mbps. I said bulls**t that I was getting 5 for the longest time and I'm in a new sub division with new cabling throughout. Yak told me that it was out of their control and it's a Bell decision. I asked what I could do and they said pretty much nothing. I asked to speak to a superior and they said they would add me to the queue of other users requesting to speak to a superior and that he would call me back. Nice, way to make a splash in the ISP market Yak!

I don't know about fraud, but what I do know, Yak offered 10Mb... said due to my location I can only get 5Mb.... now I'm actually running 2.7Mb maxed.

Feels abit cheated. Maybe not fraud, but definitely cheated.

update: after a complaint, they bumped it up to 5Mb

happy camper now.

Terrible Speed In Dufferin Area

I have had 6M/800k with teksavvy for ages, even though I believe it's supposed to be 5M/800k. Just switched to a Yak bundle in which i am supposed to get 'up to' 10 mbps and it's peaking at 3.

Incredibly disappointed.

Best combination for Internet & Phone !!!

First and foremost I am a technician of sorts.
That said, I have my own equipment & tools and I live in Barrie, Ontario.

I switched from another DSL ISP to Yak.
There is a process by which your phone and long distance are switched first then your internet should be active a day or so later.

That was the process and the plan went seamlessly.
It was painless for me without having any issues to be resolved.

I guess I am one of the exclusive people able to get the 10mb connection because of proximity to the Central Office.

When I was initially switched over I had a 17mb connection, I saw that and was hoping no one was watching but after a day or so it disappeared and was set to 10mb
It was cool to have a wide open connection.

Since then I haven't had any issues worthy of a remark

I have the Yak bundle, 10mb/1mb + Phone & 5 Features message service.

I pay the same price when I switched to Yak.
No contract and I haven't had any service fees, bogus "network charges" or increases of any kind or needed a service call.

What can I say....

800 minutes North America
5 Phone Features including answering/messaging service

No Caps
No Throttling
No Contracts
No prenuptial agreements or alimony payments to leave !!!

What are you waiting for ?
I switched and it didn't cost me a dime.
No transfer fees, port over a home (copper based) phone number.
I Switched my internet from a 5mb/800 crappy ISP to Yak and got a 10mb/1mb connection and payed less and got way MORE !

Can't agrue with that price !

The numbers don't lie...
