Gaming with CavTel???Hi, I'm a long time gamer and recently swictched to Cavtel from Verizon. My Verizon connection was 768/128 and my Cavtel is 960/960. I had no problems gaming with my Verizon connection at all ( generally 30-60 pings to servers). I got CavTel mostly for the SDSL as I access my home systems remotely and the upload speed of Verizon made for a very sluggish experience. Anyway, while my ping times to servers I "try" to play on are low, I get erratic connections with incredible lag and the gameplay is totally choppy as if I'm experiencing really bad packet loss. I've thoroughly tweaked my connections and tinkered with the rwin and mtu settings to no avail. Anyone have any similar experience with this? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm moving in several months and REALLY don't want to have to go back to Verizon.

Speed Caps with CavTel????Hi guys,
Anyone here on a DSL connection close to the CO, that should be getting speeds >2Mbit/sec???
Has anyone been able to get rates above 160 kb/sec (1280 Kbits/Sec)???

Im at 11,100ft..not to close. And yes I get more than 160kbs as of this weekend. Dunno for how long though. Check the other topics and you will see, or look at » /archi ··· vtel.net
|
| |
hmmm...interesting...I'm still trying to figure out what my problem is.
I'm at 6500 ft, and am on a RADSL dslam/line card. I'm supposed to be at about 7000 down/950 up, (ie about 800+ kbps down)
They've read out the status of my radsl line card, and my link trained up to 7100+ kbits/sec(down), so I should definitely not be capping at 165kbps.
My "tweak" settings are fine, and I'm only behind a linksys BEFSX41 firewall/router...
I've used all sorts of speed tests, and the "ftp://ftp1.optonline.net/pub/test64" is definitely a good test...I can get about 850-900 kbps here at work with no problem, every time.
But on my DSL, nothing over 165-170kbps every time.

Re: Speed Caps with CavTel????have you tried downloading say, 4 linux iso's overnight to see if the speed goes up around 1am-5am? Just to rule out oversubscribing of the lines.
|
| |
I've run all sorts of downloads over night, but the rate always stays the same. I figured if the lines were over-used, I'd see inconsistent and fluctuating rates often. But my rate is very consistent, at any time.

Guess that is the catch. You sync at 7mbit but you only will see 1.5mbit speeds. How much are you paying a month for that? Is it the Unlimited long distance/dsl package? 75/month
|
| |
I've actually been trying to troubleshoot it with the networking group, but they don't see anything from the dslam point of view.
It's actually the 49.95 package (flex DSL - unlimited local+dsl). And they say they don't cap anyone, they charge the same rate, you get whatever rate you're lucky enough to be able to get, depending on your CO distance. In my case I have a superb connection, meaning a RADSL circuit.
Have to talk with a different networking group to see if we can track down routing problems or a bottleneck somewhere else...

Taxes?Ok...I'm paying $75/month, but in actuality, it comes out to about $92 after taxes....which the biggest is the something like $15...what the hell is that?
I'll pull out the bill when I get home.
|
| |
Re: Taxes?hahahahaha, same reaction I got. sorry but it was funny cuz it reminded me of my first bill. yea taxes are high. I signed up for the $49 flex dsl plan and when taxes are included it comes up to $75. $15 or more are just plain taxes I've called them up and they said that nothing's wrong with how they calculated the total bill. I live in virginia and they said "that's how it is in virginia,...high taxes" but I do remember my taxes being around $7 bucks with verizon.

how odd, pulled out this months bill and I only have $4.50 in taxes. I have the 49/month plan and it comes out to $61.13 this month. This is my listed taxes -

dumb tech supportI wasnt happy with my dsl service so I ran a linequality test. » /speed ··· /1245276looks awful right? well I tweaked my settings and changed my RWIN to 24820. I called up cavalier tech support and asked them a simple question. I asked them what the distance was from me to the CO. The lady that answered the phone was so ignorant, she didnt even know what I was talking about so she sent a request for a trouble ticket. she said someone should call me back and solve my problem since I informed her that my speeds are never synchronized(I get speeds of 500/70, never 500/500 or 300/300). can someone tell me what's wrong with my connection?

Re: dumb tech supportthat has nothing to do with your rwin or any windows setting. Your getting packetloss from your line. That needs to be fixed before you will see any difference made with your rwin or mtu. Tell the next genius you get up with that you want an mlt test run to see where the problem is with your line. Explain to them in a calm manner that you do see packetloss to the CO and that you would like someone to look further into it. Now if they do it will be the question due to the service being "best effort". Whats your ip and I will run some tests from my end and show you what I get.
|

my ip is 64.83.10.248, and gateway is same as ip just replace the 248 with a 1 . so you think I should ask them for a mlt? err I dont know what that is could you explain it to me? so um you're saying that my line quality could be ok but the problem is on their side?

The MLT test checks to find your EWL (effective wire length) to just double check to see your distance to the CO. At the same time the test can see how well your line can handle dsl, ie wire gauge and if it runs through cap's which degrade signal. Your gateway has latency issues, 80ms+ ping from a gateway means it is either oversaturated or configured wrong, and im guessing oversaturated. What im saying is something is wrong between the gateway and your paradyne. Not sure if its the physical copper line or a setting in the routers. You sure do have some high ping times. --- 64.83.10.248 ping statistics --- 201 packets transmitted, 191 received, 4% loss, time 201841ms rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 45.692/104.980/1231.693/85.988 ms, pipe 2 traceroute to 64.83.10.248 (64.83.10.248), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets 1 de-dsl-63-238-182-121-static.dsl.cavtel.net (63.238.182.121) 1.179 ms 1.139 ms 1.083 ms 2 63.238.168.5 (63.238.168.5) 20.418 ms 12.693 ms 14.891 ms 3 63.238.168.1 (63.238.168.1) 13.452 ms 12.765 ms 12.878 ms 4 jfk-edge-04.inet.qwest.net (208.46.126.49) 17.942 ms 15.196 ms 16.171 ms 5 jfk-core-03.inet.qwest.net (205.171.30.113) 15.468 ms 15.581 ms 15.790 ms 6 dca-core-03.inet.qwest.net (205.171.8.218) 20.049 ms 22.204 ms 29.019 ms 7 dca-edge-04.inet.qwest.net (205.171.9.98) 21.691 ms 71.901 ms 19.886 ms 8 65.125.14.146 (65.125.14.146) 24.997 ms 24.767 ms 25.706 ms 9 64.83.47.102 (64.83.47.102) 32.451 ms 28.077 ms 28.183 ms 10 64.83.47.154 (64.83.47.154) 63.166 ms 72.777 ms 83.672 ms 11 64.83.53.254.s254-serial1-slash30-ric.cavtel.net (64.83.53.254) 82.588 ms 92.633 ms 94.059 ms 12 64-83-10-248-nova-business-dsl.cavtel.net (64.83.10.248) 113.582 ms 108.367 ms 102.316 ms traceroute to 64.83.10.1 (64.83.10.1), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets 1 de-dsl-63-238-182-121-static.dsl.cavtel.net (63.238.182.121) 1.195 ms 1.154 ms 1.115 ms 2 63.238.168.5 (63.238.168.5) 12.622 ms 29.694 ms 12.417 ms 3 63.238.168.1 (63.238.168.1) 13.368 ms 12.285 ms 12.015 ms 4 jfk-edge-04.inet.qwest.net (208.46.126.49) 20.455 ms 18.067 ms 21.140 ms 5 jfk-core-03.inet.qwest.net (205.171.30.113) 16.297 ms 16.018 ms 16.187 ms 6 dca-core-03.inet.qwest.net (205.171.8.218) 20.845 ms 19.769 ms 21.165 ms 7 dca-edge-04.inet.qwest.net (205.171.9.98) 20.374 ms 20.174 ms 19.943 ms 8 65.125.14.146 (65.125.14.146) 24.524 ms 39.197 ms 25.327 ms 9 64.83.47.102 (64.83.47.102) 34.872 ms 38.420 ms 104.402 ms 10 64.83.47.154 (64.83.47.154) 95.811 ms 95.592 ms 96.450 ms 11 64.83.10.1 (64.83.10.1) 97.003 ms 91.424 ms 88.603 ms

your loop length shows app 15.8k feet doode...hhhm that plus whatever quality your twisted pair is, makes up the attenuation rate.
so that copper looks a litle bit maybe to blame. does your ISP have a DSLAM that allows up/down speed adjustments? what condition is your ethernet cable? is it old, bent in sharp 180degree + angles? how good is your I/W?how about do you have the DSL modem directly connected to your PC or a firewall/router/switch, et cetera? have you taken these components out of the picture if they do exist?

No need to have a tech come out to run the MLT. Thats all done remotely.

Re: dumb tech supportIt should be under your customer records, anytime I ask it takes the rep 2 seconds to tell me. If you get the MLT done you will know exactly your loop length. If you can find someone smart enough at cavalier to run and read the test.

my isp is ignorant of technology, I dunno if they adjust up/down speeds, I'm supposed to get 960/960, but since I'm that far away then I wont expect more than 700/700.
My ethernet cable is twisted but not sharp twists, it's twisted just like any other wire would be.
I dunno what an I/W is so you'll have to forgive me, I cant answer that one.
and I dont have a router or any of that fancy stuff, but I do have zone alarm but most of the time it's not even activated.
last question, how did you know the distance from me to the CO? you did something even the tech support couldnt do.

Re: dumb tech supportIf you cant get your loop length from Cavalier then call Verizon and ask if you can get dsl from them. They will tell you your loop length with no problem. I dont think OSI GURU really knows your loop length. But I can tell from your ping times your not to close to the CO. Btw, # to order dsl from Verizon is 877-483-3648. Re: dumb tech supportcavalier just rents verizons lines. Just tell them you are looking to switch back to verizon if they can offer you dsl. Dont even mention anything about being a cavalier cust. They will have it in their records but most of the time you can sweet talk info out of them. I just keep calling till I find a cool rep that isnt a b*tch or an a@#hole. Most of the time I can do it in 1 try. Most of the time your loop length is right in front of them.

DSL question. (presales)I was wondering if the DSL/Pot splitter I got for the present DSL connection work with Cav Tel flavor of DSL? When and if Cav. Tel. becomes available in my area I am going to seriously consider it. If the present splitter won't work with Cav Tel flavor of DSL how is it filtered? With Filters or a different splitter? I know the splitter is always the best way to do though.

Re: DSL question. (presales)It should work fine. A phone spliter should work with any dsl. I dont recommend using them but thats just me. They will send you a new set of filters with the modem. I prefer people to do a home run from the NID(gray box) to the jack where the modem is. Much cleaner signal than having to use a splitter which can introduce noise and other nasty stuff.

Re: DSL question. (presales)Well I just know from my experience on my present service the DSL/Pots Splitter brought up the margins on the download side by about 11db. I had filters on each phone before and that degraded my margins that way. Now I got excellent margins. I hooked up the DSL/Pots splitter as per this website and other sources. Its good to know though that the same DSL/Pot splitter will work on Cal Tel flavor of DSL when or IF it becomes available to me.

Pennsylvania OutageI'm trying to set up my DSL for the first time and nothing has gone very well. I couldn't get the service to work, so I called customer service and they said there is a state-wide outage in PA. Has anyone else heard about this? Tips on seeing if your line has packetlossThis is just some of the steps I have used to gather info. 1. Run Dslr's monitoring. » /schedule2. See exactly where the packetloss is happening at » visualroute.visualware.com/3. Run visualpulse which tells exactly whats going on in the network and outside it.(to overpriced unless your a business) » www.visualware.com/busin ··· dex.html4. Ping Plotter is a good cheap tool to have instead of VP. » www.pingplotter.com/5. MOST IMPORTANT TIP. HAVE LOGS FOR EVERYTHING!.

Connection spiking when phone rings! When ever Im online and the phone rings my DSL connection pauses. This is very annoying while playing online games.
After the ringing is done, everything is fine.
I've also noticed that in the past two weeks, for no apparent reason I will start lagging very badly (my pings will go from 30-60ms to 1700ms). Reseting my modem and linksys router helps most of the time, but not always.
I've had Cavalier DSL for about 5 months, the ringing problem has always been there. But the lagging started in the past 2 weeks.
I do not use any microfilters. Instead I installed a Siecor DSL/ADSL Pots Splitter Filter that I bought on EBay.
Thanks,
John | |

Re: Connection spiking when phone rings!Perhaps there is something wrong with the filter you bought on Ebay. Try removing that filter and install the filter supplied by Cavalier and see if that solves your problem.

Actually Cavalier never sent me any filters at all, just the hotwire dsl modem. Which is why I bought the splitter from ebay.
Though I do have 20 or so filters Verizon sent me from my previous home when I had Verizon DSL. Maybe I'll try them.
Thanks,

Re: Hey guys check this out!Wow looks like Cavalier is "outsourcing" DSL to Phonom if you get DSL from Phonom. Looks like the pricing is lil higher than Cavalier, That don't make sense. My CO don't have Cavalier as of yet but I keeping an eye out in this group and waiting for the post card to say its available. If Cavalier has a problem keeping up with its customer service now I can't imagine if they lease out their lines how that with become then. It's all interesting.

Re: Hey guys check this out!I'm pretty sure they're cheaper than Cavalier since taxes dont apply in their situation. and they guarantee speeds of at least 512kbps however cavalier has no guarantees, BUT it is interesting that they're using cavalier as their dsl provider. They also mentioned "low latency game enthusiasts" I dont see how they can provide this when broadband is supplied by cavalier, and I do lag a lot. still worth looking at.

Packet loss over networkHi group,
We have a t1 through cavalier. Our blocks of ip address are in the 64.83.X.X network. The problem is that we are having a good amount of packet loss (10% at least) communicating between our office 64.83.X.11 (not real ip) and a server of ours at the hosting facility which is on the same subnet @ 64.83.X.59 (not real ip either.) A normal ping will only give about 2% or so packet loss, but a ping with a much larger packet size will result in greater packet loss. A trace route to the server shows that the packets that are routed stay in our network (64.83.X.X.) Does anybody have any suggestions on how to eliminate or decrease the packet loss?
Thanks! | |

What speed does Cavalier offer? What's the highest speed does Cavalier offer because I'm confused? In their FAQ, it says up to 4mbps (nothing about upload speed, I'm guessing 1mbps). In one of their advertisement page, » www.cavtel.com/news/hotw ··· al.shtml, they offer only 960/960kbps. Are certain speeds available only in certain places or available at a certain price? I'm currently getting a solid 1500/768kbps at my current ISP and I'm almost 11,000 ft from the CO. If they offer 4000/1000, I will consider changing telco/ISP because it looks like my current ISP won't be offering higher speeds anytime soon.

Could CavTel solve my nightmare?Hey Folks,
Lets go for the cliff-noted version of my Verizon hell. Had ADSL and SDSL at my home. (Not at the same time..) I then made the mistake of switching to Comcast. I'm now getting about 10k up and 2500k down. Since I upload files quite often this isn't going to cut it.
Tried to go back to Covad/Speakeasy or even VerizonDSL - my old loop length (same house remember) was about 11,000 feet. I have been trying since 11/2003 to get some explanation, or help -- but, their customer service is worthless! I have tried different numbers, ordering additional lines etc -- I'm now told I'm 24,940 feet! So for some reason it seems that there are load-coils on my line! Ugh.
Here comes the CavTel question. Are they going to be any easier to work with? Since I would think my loop length is still 11,000 feet would they at least try DSL? I would be excited with 256/1500! I'm simple...
Any suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Is there anyone else here from the philly area???So far as I've seen there is only one other person and he has the same modem as I and we both seem to be having the same problems. I just want to know if no one in the Philly area are getting anything near the 6000/1000Mbps we are supposed to be getting.
Cavtel sent out a tech to my home today and he checked everything and said that he could find no problems with my line. And yet I still haven't seen any speeds faster then 1100Mbps down and often times it's as low as 500kbps. my upload speeds fluctuate between 300 and 600kbps.
So, what the heck is going on in Philly with Cavtel??
