Storing a laptop

I'm going to be unable to use my laptop for 4-5 months, so I'm looking for advice on how best to store it. I've found a lot of information regarding battery storage, but nothing that addresses storing the laptop itself. Has anyone else left their laptop untouched for several months at a time? Is there any data stored in the CMOS that couldn't be easily restored? Should I worry about completely discharging the onboard battery, if it even would? Is relative humidity a concern? I have desiccant packets if they would help.

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad R61, with a 4-cell Li-Ion and a 6-cell Li-Ion.

Plz help on laptop choice

Ok so basically I want your guys opinions because I want to make sure I make the best thought out planned decision on this I can possibly get. What I want is this, Basically a gaming laptop $1000 or under...I'd like to find the best one I can at that price range. I will go to $1100 BUT the price jump must be extremely justifiable when looking at performance. BTW, screen size really doesn't matter to me..I don't want to skimp on other parts for screen size.

Ones I've looked at thus far are as follows....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220699
+'s I like the price, and the core i5
-'s I don't like the 5400rpm HDD and the Graphics card seems a little low compared to others.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220696
+'s Core i-7, DDR3, USB3, Good Graphics Card W/DX11, 7200rpm HDD
-'s Price is at my budget..not a big deal but only con I can see with this one.

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Qosmio+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+Processor+-+Omega+Black/9716111.p;jsessionid=897D37562073ACC2A6ABA470B44F9E72.bbolsp-app04-28?id=1218158634282&skuId=9716111&st=9716111&cp=1&lp=1
+'s Probably the best gcard for a laptop in my price range? DDR3
-'s Jumped over by $100, Not real sure its worth the price increase. 5400rpm HDD

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Toshiba+-+Satellite+Laptop+with+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i7+Processor+-+Quantum+Black/9705203.p;jsessionid=897D37562073ACC2A6ABA470B44F9E72.bbolsp-app04-28?id=1218154377801&skuId=9705203&st=9705203&cp=1&lp=1
+'s Core i7, DDR3, Price 100 under
-'s Is the Nvidia 310M even better than the GTX260M?, 5400RPM HDD

Please take a look at let me know what you guys think, Opinions and comments on my current laptops I'm looking into are greatly greatly appreciated...please point out things I missed etc... Also other laptops you know of that are better deals/better performance
wise for what I want in my price range are greatly appreciated.

Please don't post laptops that are out of my price range because they are beasts or whatever...I cannot go over what I laid out.

Netbooks and Opinions.

I been checking out the various online stores to see what is available in the form of a Netbook. Surf, email, phone calls (with blue tooth would be nice), watch live video feeds, radio, read PDFs are some examples of what I might use this for. I like the idea of the small and portability.
I read posts of the http://www.ocztechnology.com/products/diy_notebooks/ocz_neutrino_10-diy_netbook and it seems like when that came out like 6 months ago or so it was the hottest idea around but now not a peep about it. I am a techie so I wouldn't mind putting one of those together but the drivers seem confusing. For example they have the bluetooth driver for Vista but not available in XP according to the web site. It says it comes with a disk with drivers, I would be curious to know what they have on that disk. It's interesting one can get a card for this OCZ Netbook to get 3G internet although details on how this is done is vague at best.
I looked at some of the Asus models too and I look at some refurbished models too (online that is).
I looked at Acer and MSI too among other ones.
Basically, what I get from reading review after review is I get is that people have high expectations for Netbooks with Atom processors then being disappointed unless of course they are purchasing a Netbook for their kids.
The two I am considering the OCZ Neutrino because I read the display is brighter than many of the Netbooks out there and it has decent sound. I just hate to get in a bind with drivers if anyone has any experience with that please follow up. I am sure I would get support from the company but still.
Cost would run me to about $500 to include 2 gig ram and 60gig SSD.
The other Netbook I looked at was just to get a used Asus Eee pc 900(A perhaps) for little bit under 200. It would have a small SSD and the memory would need to be upgraded too. Same upgrade components as above cost would be mid $400.

Since the processor is an Atom I might consider Linux as OS too.

Comments welcome.

Software for laptop cameras?

SO I have this Acer laptop with a webcam built in. Many laptop s do. It came with some software to create stills, and I have used it with skype, and the flash application from youtube works fine, however why they dont include software for recording to avi format is beyond me.

Does anyone know of a free software package that will allow you to record video to your computer without the need of the Internet?

Thank you

[Notebooks] New lappy...

Howdy, I'm looking at this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220699 to replace my 4 year old Alienware lappy. Seems like a pretty good deal. Any concerns with Brand/model?

One question I do have is since this will be my first 64 bit system, will my MS Office suite Home and Student 2007 that is runs my 32 bit systems run or do I need a 64 bit office suite?

Thanks...

Wireless Card

Hi,

Hope this is the right/best spot to post this question.

I am looking at getting a new 14" laptop (HP or Dell). Some have the Wireless-N Mini Card and others says Wireless-802.11b/g/n.

I use AT&T's U-verse as my provider at home and also travel a lot so I use airport and hotel wireless a good deal.

Is there a reason to go with one type of wireless card over the other or will they both work the same? I want to be sure
I get the right laptop/card.

Also any big difference say between the Intel® Core™ i3-330M Processor and the Intel® Pentium Dual-Core Processor if their rated GHz is the same or similar? Not sure which way to go on this. I don’t really do any gaming or graphics. Mostly internet surfing, email and work stuff (Office applications).

Thanks
Logan

Replacement laptop battery requires a BIOS update?

Hey all,

Has anyone ever heard of a replacement laptop battery shipping with a BIOS upgrade on a CD that needed to be installed before the battery is installed?

My parents have a Sony Vaio SZ series whose battery recently conked out. They ordered a replacement from a site called laptopbatterydepot.com. It came with a CD of software that actually contains a BIOS update. Personally, I would never flash my BIOS using a binary that came from someone other than the manufacturer of the computer (or the motherboard). Is this normal? I'm trying to figure out what to advise them to do.

Judging from the reviews and ratings on that retailer, I would have advised my folks to get the battery from somewhere else if I had known in advance.
