Disconnects

Can ANYONE explain my disconnects ???
Is PPPoE inherently like dial-up?
I can go days w/o a disconnect, then 4-,5-,6+ a day.
I was led to believe that DSL was like cable in that it was "always on". This has NOT been the case for my connection.

DSLExtreme PPPoE connections via Covad?

I currently have DSL with Verizon,at their lowest rate, the slowest connection (768-128).

In looking at DSLXs site, I see that they offer me higher speeds, at a lower price than verizon offers. They offer what they call "Express DSL", 1500/384 (speeds that Verizon doesn't even offer), at $24.95 monthly under contract, or "Pro DSL" 3000/768 for the same price, $24.95! (I don't know why anyone would sign up for express then, if they can get pro at the same price?)

In chatting with a dslx agent, I found out that those rates are only for PPPoE connections. The same plans with DHCP connections cost more than through Verizon. And they are not reselling Verizon DSL, but Covad. (I don't completely understand that, as I thought the local telcos controlled all the DSL connections, and other ISPs, such as DSLX, just resold the ATT or Verizon DSL. How does that work--Covad buys from Verizon, resells to dslx, and the latter to me, and somehow its cheaper?

Looking at Covad's site--they charge much more for DSL--like $250 per month! I guess they are giving a good deal to dslx for these PPPoE connections.

So, major price difference to get the PPPoE-Covad connection through DSLX, rather than the DHCP-Verizon.

What is the disadvantage of PPPoE? Anyone here have that kind of Covad PPPoE connection? How is its reliablity, compared to a Verizon DHCP connection?

Upgrading questions...

I have a couple of questions regarding upgrading my service. The new website is not as straight forward as the old one when trying to modify your subscription in my opinion. First, what is price freeze? This is only available on the package I am thinking of upgrading to (6000/768). When I select price freeze the "your price" amount changes from $32.95 to "not available". When selecting the package and continuing to the complete order page, I see a modification fee of $50? Haven't upgrades always been free in the past? It lists free activation, however, I am not sure what the modification fee is? Thanks in advance...

ATTN: NOC/ Bill/Teir 2 Support - BGP Routing all jacked

Hope you still work in support Bill. This is C. Ratto... WAAAAZAAAAAAAAAP!!!

uid: removed@dslextreme.com (was removed@dslextreme.com)
pw: hmmmmmm i wonder.....

Support, NOC, & To Who It May Concern:

Ladies, Gentlemen...

I have a tier 3 account through you, which happened to be a nice peer with Covad/Level3 Communications...

What happened to the peer with Level3 in California, and why am I on the peer for ATT (COMCAST... ...PACBELL...)??

Why does the BGP route out of California peer with Level3, but if routing in California the path is over ATT or COGENTCO??

I disappear for a year or two and this is what I find...

I am disappointed in the least. Could it be a possibility to return my node back on the Level3 Link?

Please, I cannot go through another Peering, and Routing, issue again. I am not worried about the latency that happens from time to time. I have provided some traces below.

Regards,

Carlo Ratto

Takes long time to connect

I'm having a problem connecting to many websites I frequently visit, for example, newegg.com, etrade.com, ..., whenever I try to go there it takes a long time to connect. This has been going on since I first opened up my account one week ago.
Sometimes it does not connect at all. I get a "Can't display" message on the browser.
Any idea why?

I am having an issue with the 502 message. I have read through the postings and tried what I could. Not sure what telnet is but it does not respond at command prompt. I close my news reader X-news, shut off computer, re start and still get 502. is there any way to see if my connection is still open after I close x-news. Do yo have an open thread about his problem?

returning DSLX customer with a few questions

Hello everyone. A couple of years ago I had Dslextreme in Hemet California via Verizon's phone line connection. I moved in July 2006 to Riverside, where I had DSLX for a short time via AT&T lines, but cancelled the connection due to AT&T issues that AT&T weren't willing to fix. The DSL extreme service itself was top notch.
I'm preparing to move again in a bit over a month back to Hemet, and am considering returning as a DSL Extreme subscriber once there, but I have a few questions.
First, I'll need DSL Extreme to provide me a DSL modem Self-install kitt, as I no longer have my old DSL modem I used previously.
Is it possible for me to have them send the equipment to my current address, and then I can take it with me when I move? Or must I wait until I move before even placing the order. I ask this because I'll want to have internet access as soon as possible once I move, and I could get cable temporarily, however if DSL extreme could send me the DSL installation equipment at my current address, I can do just as I did when I had my own modem, and just place the order a week before I move, so by the time I get to the new address, the line should be activated and ready to go, and all I need do is connect the modem and install the filters on the phones..
My second question has to do with fastpath and Interleave. I know a couple years ago, Verizon started to default all connections to their dslam equipment to interleave, regardless of whether or not the customer was on Verizon's backbone, or going over Verizon's network to another provider as I'd be doing. Assuming this still happens, can I still get DSL extreme to contact Verizon and have them switch my circuit to Fastpath as I did before? This will give me better latency, which I do very much prefer. I'm moving back to the exact same location in Hemet where I had DSLExtreme before, and I'm looking forward to a pleasant experience I hope.
