[DSL] phone hangs up with new DSL modem

I have Earthlink DSL service, a 3com wireless router, and Mac computers. The ISP-supplied modem died so I got an Actiontec DSL modem (not wireless). Set up everything fine, I think, with the modem as a bridge and the 3com doing the DHCP and all the subnets correct. Internet works fine, though it seems to go out or at least hang once in a while. The problem is that now in a 10-minute phone conversation we get disconnected 2-3 times! This never happened before. I've heard of phone calls disconnecting the internet but not the other way around. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

[Modem] trying to switch my Broadmax Linkmax DSL modem to PPPoA

I have an old Broadmax Linkmax HSA300A-2 DSL modem that I bought used and works fine. I've switched ISPs so now I need to switch from PPPoE to PPPoA. But since the modem came with the Earthlink proprietary firmware I can't get to the factory setup. Of course, since Broadmax is long gone they can't help either. Any ideas?

TIA.

[Line Problem] dns issue in San Francisco

I've been having this problem with my DSL about two weeks now, in SF. When I'm browsing to a site it often takes a long time to respond, I see the msg "Looking up ...." in the status bar and it often times out. When it times out I can hit reload and the second time it almost always comes up at normal or near normal speed. The modem lights don't indicate any problem. Is this a problem with my line or the modem or what? TIA

[Services] Time to Switch?

Is it time to leave Earthlink? I've had their high speed DSL since 2001 but now I'm fed up with them. I used to be able to get someone who actually spoke English who didn't pretend his name was "Mike" when he spoke with an Indian accent so heavy that it was next to impossible to understand what he was saying.

And I didn't have to hear from people who told me, oh, recycle your modem and who couldn't answer my questions about why I had to delete ZoneAlarm and why I had to give it a specific IP address instead of telling it to find it automatically.

And I didn't deal with people who promised to send me a link to something but never did.

And I didn't have Verizon begging me to sign up for FiOS which is four times faster.

Yeah, I think it's time to go.

Setting up new ZyXEL 660R-D1 w/ olde Linksys WRT54GS router?

We've had Earthlink DSL service since 2001 running through a ZyXEL Prestige 642M-11 modem. Some time after 2001 we added a Linksys WRT54GS router and now have 2 wired computers, 1 wireless laptop, 1 Linksys NSLU2 storage server, and 1 wired WPS54U2 print server. This set-up has worked for years.

Recently the modem started to fail. Earthlink agreed to send a replacement modem. While we waited for the new modem I borrowed a ZyXEL Prestige 645 and my DSL service returned to "normal".

The new modem arrived from Earthlink - it is a ZyXEL P-660R-D1. Earthlink sent no instructions or paperwork with the modem - just the modem, power supply, ethernet cable, and phone cable. To understand more about the 660R-D1 I downloaded appropriate .pdf files from the ZyXEL website. I see that the 660R-D1 has router capabilities. I also see that I don't seem to be able to get the ZyXEL modem and the Linksys router to play nice together. From the downloaded literature I see that the ZyXEL can be set to PPPoE to Earthlink - I suspect that the ZyXEL and the Linksys are in conflict over who should log in.

Does anyone have any recommendations on how to set up these two devices so they play nice together in our specific setup? One more piece of info - I'm looking at adding another router to my little LAN so I can hardwire a couple more computers.

I've looked at some of the FAQs and read something about setting the ZyXEL to bridge mode. Is that what I should be thinking about? Also, the ZyXEL and the Linksys appear to have the same IP address 192.168.1.1 Any recommendations on what to change the IP address to? - come to think of it, I should probably leave the Linksys IP set to 192.168.1.1 and change the ZyXEL to something different.

Thanks for your help!

Install or not install software

Is there any advantage to using the Earthlink software when setting up DSL? I hooked everything up without it and the log in page came up and off we go! The operating system is Windows 2000 Pro service pack 4. It's actually a friend's account who phoned me to come install it.

The down side is downloads (like Antivir and Spybot) are abysmally slow...crawling and most times stopping halfway through download. But web pages seem to load fast and steady.

The Zyxel 600 has an orange light for Ethernet. Does this mean the modem is in the Bridge mode? We signed in w/ user name e-mail and password and it was accepted.

In the interest of full disclosure, I'm a Bellsouth (now AT&T) DSL customer. I'm just trying to help a friend. Thanks!

Monthly Earthlink DSL rates up, can I bargain them down?

Has anyone had success bargaining Earthlink DSL rates down?

My DSL monthly rates jumped this month to 49.95$ (first month after coming off of a yearly contract), and I'm tempted to take up AT&T on their $30 3mb-down offer. Have people successfully bargained their Earthlink rates down on this forum, and is there any reason why I shouldn't go to ATT (except for the email hassle?) Thanks!

[Home Networking] VOIP Freestanding DSL, etc

I have Freestanding DSL w/Earthlink and I also have Vonage (VOIP). I know that to make Vonage work on all the jacks in my house, I would need to unplug at the NID. IF I do that, will my Freestanding (Dry loop) DSL still work? OR am I just plain confused about all of this??!?!?

[Modem] Zyxel modem and new Earthlink DSL subscription

I just signed up with Earthlink for DSL after getting fed up with Verizon total non-tech support. Here's the deal: I didn't know I had to have a special DSL modem for Earthlink. Apparently EL doesn't know it either as they took 2 weeks to send me the modem after setting on it for no reason.

Anyway, I now have a problem that I didn't have with Verizon: I use 3 laptops wirelessly, 2 desktops wired, Wii wireless, and an XBOX360 wired. I notice with EL that quite often my session times out. I click 'reload' and all is well. Line speed seems normal when its working.

So now I read some things about the Zyxel modem and bridging and using a router and multiple computers. I don't understand this bridging much. Is this possibly the problem with my sessions timing out on any of the computers once in a while? I see how to set the modem to bridging using the wizard and my Belkin54g already has an IP address of 192.168.1.2 so there's no conflict with the modem.

If that is what I need to do, I just run the wizard and once done, all is ready, or do I have to reset the router, modem, or any of the computers?
