Fairpoint ain't bad

Hey , why do people say Fairpoints trash?

in my area which is in Langdon , NH
the DSL connection is reliable.

i get 1.5Mbps download and Dial-up-ish Upload
which is what is paid for.

but sometimes it does get slow to the point Youtube
won't work which is odd.

i wonder if Fairpoint throttles or filters during certain parts of the day?

Stay and Save program

Now that I'm no longer a FairPoint DSL customer I presume I qualify for this program. The fine print says limited time offer and open to new customers only. Actual kind of a clever idea, lower the monthly price the longer you stay. I give them credit for coming up with a loyalty program.

Just for fun tried to access the link mentioned but got a page not found error. A search for "stay and save" just turned up a bunch of bundles. Oh well if anyone goes this route post back how it worked out.

I'll stay with my CLEC.

[speed/latency] DSL congestion

Ever since this Monday every day from 11:00- 3:00 and even times later at night my modem Westell 7500 has issues.

Here is what I noticed.

1. DSL light flashes really fast then disconnects and says please connect a DSL line.

2. DSL disconnects and reboots and terrible speeds with 100-200 jitter and high ping, See pic
http://www.speedtest.net/result/2683968067.png
http://www.pingtest.net/result/80590105.png

I just had fairpoint here to take a look and my connection was absolutely terrible so what he did was disconnect and reconnect now the speeds are normal how ever he did tell me there is congestion in the town that may be causing the bad performance issues.

Fairpoint tech also told me that my connection is so good it is rated at 7.9Mbps how ever the highest stable connection is 6mbps to 6.5mbps but fairpoint only has plans for 3, 7, 10 and 15.

Sigh Why can't I get 6? How come the public can't have the highest stable plan and just pay more money? Heck I'll pay for the 7 package just to get any thing faster then 280-305 kylobytes a second.

Pings on Fairpoint DSL has been a terrible experience for me with netflix constantly buffering or game pings on world of warcraft, Battlefield 3 100-200 all the time.

How can one reduce ping in my games and have net netflix not buffer every 5 seconds?

I am the only one using my DSL 90% of the time how ever I do have a Netgear hub connected to it via Ethernet cord with 3 computers, 1 blue ray and 1 360 connected via the hub and 1 blue ray and 1 xbox connected via Ethernet to the router.

Sure that may seam like a lot but at any giving time only one device is active

[modem/router] Want to ByPass the Fairpoint Security Update

I have a Westell 6100 modem that was provided by Fairpoint when we first signed up for DSL. I am having to reboot the modem several times a day because it stops accessing the internet periodically. I don't want to get another modem from Fairpoint, so I purchased an Actiontec GT701D several months ago. I had trouble connecting it initially.... couldn't get beyond the Fairpoint login screen. I have taken it out again for another try, and now it has successfully installed itself.

My problem now is that now when I access the internet, I can't get beyond the Fairpoint message telling me I need to install a security update. To try to get beyond it, I downloaded the update and tried to install it. It failed, of course, since the modem isn't the modem the update expected to see.

How can I get beyond that Fairpoint screen so I can access the internet again?? All systems are go as far as the Actiontec modem is concerned. It's Fairpoint that is putting up a block.

I hope someone can help!

[connectivity] fiber and android

About two weeks ago I had FairPoint install a 30/15 fiber connection. Although I experienced one outage, the service does perform generally as advertised, The two android devices in my household seem to be the exception; neither of them is able to access the internet. Computers and Roku receivers work well.

The wireless router reports an excellent connection.

The androids are able to access a web page on the local network.

When I connect an android to an unprotected router in the neighborhood, I am able to get access.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on here?

Thanks
