ADSL 2, running at what feels like dial-up speeds

Hi, I'm from australia, but you guys seem pretty cluey in regards to all things computers :D
I have a Siemens Speedstream 4200, single port modem. And up until a couple of days ago (when my internet stopped working correctly) when I ran diagnostic tests in the router homepage, I had all "pass" written next to them. Now I have an inconsistent "fail".
As in the "fail" changes between 3 of the choices in the INTERNET CONNECTIVITY section. The tests are:
Default Gateway	Ping the default gateway	FAIL
DNS	Ping the primary Domain Name Server	FAIL
Internet	Ping a well-known Internet host	PASS

That was the results for my last test.
But they dont stay that way, they change randomly.
Any insight into this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Sorry if i've posted in the wrong area

Google Voice?

Does anyone here use their Google Voice number as their primary number? I am thinking of switching cell carriers and am thinking of giving out my Google Voice number instead of the new number.

How has it worked out for you?

College bills on Mastercard?

My college offers some health insurance to alumni. It was around $700 and I wanted to pay with my debit card or credit card (I have Visa and Mastercard). This is the same place I would go pay my tuiton, etc.

I noticed my college will charge a 3% fee for any bills that were paid using a debit or credit card. I had to pay in cash which was inconvenient having to make an extra trip to the bank, withdraw $700 from a teller (ATM limits it to $500/day I think), and then drive back and pay the thing.

I thought fees could not be charged for credit card usage, or is there a special case for this? I suppose a student could put a $30,000 tuition bill on their credit card, and the school would get charged a huge interchange fee by whatever credit card company was used.

Seasoning Cast Iron Cookware

I have a cast iron skillet that needs seasoning. It had rancid fat in it. I got that cleaned out (multiple boilings with Dawn detergent) and well rinsed out. So far, so good.

Yay!

Besides comments like "jest cooker up some stuff in it"...does anyone have some insight on how best to proceed and what has worked for you?

Grammar Question

Centurylink's (The merger of Centurytel & Embarq) new slogan is:

We are stronger connected.

I was told that was grammatically incorrect, and it should be:

We are stronger, connected. (Comma inserted)

Any clue which is right?

Do open browser pages use bandwidth?

I have a number of items that I have set up on eBay searches.
Some times I might get some good hits and there might be 20 items that I open an eBay page for each in IE.
AFTER all the pictures and text load, does it use any more bandwidth to just have these pages sitting open?

I could see that some pages have ?active content that is changing regularly would use the connection.

Computer #1 has a Verizon Aircard for internet connection.
That computer has ICS turned on to share the connection with Computer #2 through local network.
Is having ~20 IE pages SITTING open on Computer #2 going to make Computer #1 act slow or sluggish?

Experience with NetFlix streaming?

Currently, we have cable and have a few movie channels (HBO, Encore, Starz, and maybe others) and Encore/Starz On Demand channels. However, my family finds the selection of movies are pretty much crap. I'm looking to see if that situation can be improved, especially since these channels are add-ons to the cable bill.

I recently purchased a new TV for the living room and plan to hook it up a Mac Mini that's been boxed up for the past few months. I figured it would be a great opportunity to use the Mac Mini as a media center device where I could stream video from the video services or even from other computers on my home network (I am not going wireless here, everything will be over cat5e). I briefly looked on the NetFlix website and noticed they have what seems to be a vast collection of movies available for streaming which is available (correct me if I'm wrong) for just $8.99/mo.

So for those who have streamed video through NetFlix, what was your experience like? Would you recommend it as an alternative to paying for premium cable channels? My family would still keep cable service, but we'd get downgrade our package so we can save the money spent on these channels we don't really need. What I run into any problems doing this on a Mac Mini? Additionally is there any way to make it so that I don't need a keyboard or mouse to navigate on the Mac Mini NetFlix interface? For example, I know I was able to use a Mac remote control that allowed me to navigate thru Front Row. If I could do the same with whatever NetFlix interface/software is used, that would be amazing.

Citibank International Wire Transfer question....

I'm heading to the Citibank branch at lunch but I figured I'll see if anyone encountered this before.

I just did an international wire transfer to Hong Kong for 4750HKD (about 635$)

Everything on my end shows i sent 4750$ but the recipient received a letter from HSBC showing that only 4650HKD was wired. So there's 100HKD is missing.

I sent it in Hong Kong Dollars so there's no conversion rate to worry about and I paid a 20$ wire fee for this as well.

Has anyone encountered this type of missing money before?
