The LHC is back online!

http://press.web.cern.ch/press/PressReleases/Releases2009/PR16.09E.html

I saw this via Wil Wheaton's Twitter. CERN's Twitter is twitter.com/CERN - they are posting updates as they work through their testing!

(Wow, I am a geek. This is exciting!)

[Serious] Heavy Heart

Hi All,
First of all, I apologize for not updating... I come to you with heavy heart that I am losing my mom to lung cancer. We got the latest results of her CT/PET scan. Her lung tumor is now 8 cm and her cancer has spread to her lower back, pelvis, and femur. Prognosis is probably two months. I know the onc cannot give us a definitive answer. We are going to meet with the onc one more time on Nov. 30th to see if there are any clinical trials at KU Med. If not, the next step is hospice. We tried getting her into a clinical trial but her LDH was too high to qualify. I really hate cancer!! It's a disease that just takes soooo much away.

Cancer must be stopped!

[Chat] I'm running now!

I can't believe I didn't post on this while I was going through the program. I think I wanted to hold off until I could say that it stuck.

Old hands around here know I quit smoking almost two years ago (Nov 27, 2007). What you don't know is, since June, I have been going through the Couch to 5K program.

I used to play tennis in high school, until I blew out my knee and had some other issues. During my first year of college (including the summer before) I lost over 100 pounds by walking and watching what I ate. (It's amazing what no car will do to get you out there and walking.)

Fast-forward to 2009. I had put on some (not all, thank goodness) of the weight when I quit smoking. The doctors told me not to worry, that it would come off in time - and it was much better to be quit than worry about a couple of pounds. I had been doing strength training since January 2009, but it wasn't clicking with me.

Then I found Couch to 5K.

I did the program in nine weeks. AMAZING! I was never a runner, not even when I played tennis. I HATED running laps. I hated running, period. Now? I run three times a week, 3.5 miles each time. I am running at about a 10:45/11:30 minute per mile pace, which isn't setting any speed records...but isn't a turtle, either!

Next week, on Nov 21st, I will be running in my first 5K. I am both excited and nervous. Can you believe it?

How many runners are here, lurking in Helix-land? How did you get into it (or fall out of it)? Had you done something like C25K? Any tips for a newbie racer?

Sorry for the epic post but I just couldn't hold back any longer. :)

[Serious] March of Dimes Prematurity Month

https://www.marchofdimes.com/prematurity/index.asp

It's Prematurity Awareness Month. Our Emma was 1 lb. 13 oz. born at 26 weeks, a fighter who continues to fight, the girlie is a pistol. After 5 months in the NICU and 1.6 million dollars later our girlie came home. We hold March of Dimes close to our heart. Emma was a lucky one, we saw many babies who didn't make it, it... our broke our heart. A band was created for Emma, I am not asking for a donation, just awareness.
