[SSD]Accidentally Had My SSD Scheduled To Defrag

I put a Crucial m4 SSD in a laptop a couple of months ago, and forgot to turn the defrag function off under Task Scheduler after loading Win 7 Pro on it.

I found this on Crucial's site:

http://forums.crucial.com/t5/Solid-State-Drives-SSD-Knowledge/Does-defragmenting-an-SSD-cause-any-long-term-performance-loss/ta-p/71051

I have no idea how many times it defragged and used up write cycles. I can't find the log which tells me. The SSD still works fine and fast. Where do I find the log? I just want to get a rough idea how many times it defragged so that I have some knowledge of what the long-term performance of the SSD will be.

Question regarding random shutdowns

Hey there, I briefly have posted about this before. I have even spoken to a good friend of mine who does PC work for a living. The problem I am having is my new rig The Video card is an ATI Radeon HD 6870 and Im running Windows 7 64bit (which has pretty good specs, ill post some CPUz pics) is I can run Skyrim, COD, SWTOR, basically any new game on ultra high settings with no lag, artifactings or any problems. But on occasion a youtube video, Yahoo news video, or any type of streaming of video will turn my screen to black with grey lines and the audio of whatever is playing will make a loud "Errrrrrrk" type sound and I have to manually restart the computer. This can happen multiple times a day or I can go days without. I was told hardware wouldnt be the issue or I would be experiecing other problems. Also that software could be a factor, however everything is fully up to date (except the MB I think, as Im not sure to how to update that) But any help or incite would be great. The problem is life threating but becomming progressively annoying. Thanks a bunch for any and all help.

Acer Aspire 4745 Atheros Wireless

I've got a Acer Apsire 4745 running Windows 7 x64 I downloaded the Atheros driver via Acers website but windows still can't find the driver for it.

I've also tried the Intel and Broadcom. I used the tool Acer has to verify manufacture information and it is indeed the Atheros Wireless Card. Windows 7 Device Manager Just says it's a Network Device doesn't say what kind it is. I've tried removing the device from device manager and restarting, I tried selecting the folders location and so on. Can't seem to get it to work with the driver.

Ideas?

Would a bad chipset cause these problems on a new laptop?

I purchased a Lenovo G570 laptop a month ago. I came across a notice on their website about a bad Intel 6 chipset and would like to know if the problems I have experienced could have anything to do with the chipset.

Here's the notice about the chipset http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/research/news-and-alerts/detail.page?DocID=NA000361

The day I set up Windows and installed some programs, when I used "run as" to update Spyware Blaster nothing happened and eventually Explorer crashed. (Windows gave me a note and restarted it.)

Another time the laptop wouldn't come out of sleep or hibernation and however I got it to turn on, I got a message in the admin account saying it recovered from a crash and had a bsod.

Yesterday the computer was either sleeping or hybernating but when we pressed the tower button the power light went on but the laptop didn't come on. (I did notice the cpu was running fast from the sound and warm breeze coming out of the side). Not knowing what else to do, I plugged in the battery. I pressed on the tower button again after about 4 minutes and it turned off (I was hoping it would turn on). When I turned it on I got the message it didn't shut down properly and I chose "start normally". The battery power was at 46% so the battery life was okay.

So basically it doesn't come back on. (This doesn't happen all the time.)

Do these things sound like a chipset problem? Thank you.

Sincerely, Libra

HP DV6 laptop

Errors starting happening with the hard drive, blue screens and the like. Since I was going to swap out the monitor cable (it was going bad), I was going to re-install Windows. Got it all back together and working fine. Attempted to re-install Windows using the backup partition; failed. Tried to use the backup discs; failed. Tried to use an OEM Win7 disc; failed after trying to format the drive. After deleting partitions, it couldn't find the hard drive. WTF?
So I powered down, popped off the hard drive cover and removed the hard drive. When I flipped it over, part of it was brown. And the part that was brown was the part that is directly over the Wi-Fi card. It even has burn marks from the two wi-fi cables that go up into the lcd screen. So now I'm thinking it's got a bad wi-fi card that over-heats. And there is no heat-shield between the hard drive and wi-fi card.
What do you super-techs think?

[att=1]

See the burn?

BT Headset wouldn't pair

I just got a Pulsar 590E headset, BT 2.0, and I'm not able to get it to work with the adapters I have. I've got 2 BT adapters, one is 2.1, the other is either 2.0 or 2.1, but neither one would work with the headset. Since they connect just fine to each other, the BT adapters must be working.

Is there any trick I need to do? The headset is turned on, and I even tried pushing the buttons on it to no avail.

TIA

[motherboard] Missing Win7 driver help

I'm having an issue finding a driver for an Acer Veriton M661 desktop. I installed Win 7 Pro 64-bit on it, and everything loaded except for a serial device, and a pci communications device.

I resolved the serial issue from the chipset drivers gotten from Intel's website, but the pci one remains. As you can see from the image, the hardware ID is:

PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_29B4&subsys_26361019 - which I see comes back to Intel(R) Management Engine Interface (HECI), but for the life of me, I can't find a windows 7 driver for it that works.

Ideas? Help? This should be easy, but for whatever reason today, my mind isn't in it.

Thanks for any help.

[motherboard] Laptop with no display

I've got a Dell Inspiron laptop that's 3 years old. It runs great, except the backlight on the screen is dead. I've replaced both the screen and the power inverter replaced, and the current screen/inverter put in other laptops. Good parts, just won't work with this dell. Something won't power the screen.

Right now I've got it hooked up to an external monitor, but it's still somewhat of a PITA, especially since it dual-boots and the external monitor doesn't display anything until Windows is loading, and navigating the prompts while holding the laptop at various angles trying to make out what's on the screen is difficult.

Is there anything short of an entire new motherboard I can try to fix it? Or, barring that, is there anything I can do to force it to ignore the LCD and output everything to the external port?

Webcam question

My computer is Lenovo T61 with Core2 Duo T7300 @ 2 GHz, 8GB of RAM, running Windows 7 x64

I borrowed Logitech QuickCam Pro 9000 (2-3 years years old, Logitech software supports resolution up to 1280x720P) from a friend, downloaded and installed drivers and software from Logitech.

Everything works but I have a couple of questions - never had a webcam before.

1) Camera seems be really laggy and picture is smudged/blurred (as if FPS cannot keep up) at any resolution higher than 640x480 (320x240 is the best and it gets worse with resolution increase).

Easiest way to achieve this is to wave a hand in front of the camera. This is can be just by going to "Quick Capture" mode in Logitech software without even recording to disc. Whenever I do this the process "System" starts consuming 17-25% in Task Manager.

When I do record even in 320x240 mode the video is only 15 FPS.

Is this due to the fact that my computer is a bit on a slower side for today (got it in September 2007 but it seems to be running Windows 7 x64 just fine) or due to the fact that camera can't really support higher resolutions well? Or both?

2) Are there any webcams that deliver true 1280x720P 30 FPS picture that can be captured to disc (assuming computer is fast enough)? Or is it a feature that only "real" camcorders support?

3) What is the highest video resolution Skype supports? I haven't found any settings in Skype (latest version) that allow to change video resolution.

Help with a new build

Hello.

I am currently building a computer and I'm having trouble getting it to work. The parts in question are as follows:

-AS Rock Z68 Pro3 Gen3 Z68 1155R motherboard
-Sapphire HD6870 video card
-Cosair 600W power supply
-4Gx2 PNY RAM

When i have only the ram in the motherboard the computer posts to the bios with two quick beeps. One big setback is that my Microsoft wireless keyboard isn't working. The bios recognizes the keyboard in the USB slot but the keyboard is unresponsive. The keyboard has been working fine with my previous computer.

Secondly, when I add the video card to the mix, the computer doesn't start at all. It starts if the video card is in the PCI Express slot, but once I plug the two power supply chords to the video card, the computer doesn't boot at all.

Is it time to RMA the video card or could there be more serious problems at play?

Thanks!

i7-2600K with one core running 10C cooler

Something curious: my i7-2600K CPU (physical 4 cores) shows the above DTS-provided temperatures for each core (remember: DTSes are per-core, and are not external thermistors). This is with the latest CoreTemp (1.0 RC3).

Core #1 is always around 7-10C cooler than my other cores -- when idle and when under load. This machine has been powered on and used for weeks, so it has nothing to do with "burn-in".

This is on Windows XP SP3. Also, disabling HyperThreading (dropping from 8 "threads" to 4 "threads") has no bearing on the problem (nor would I expect it to).

I am absolutely 100% certain this is not a software bug because many others have seen it, and with completely different softwares. Here's a compiled list of URLs where others have reported the same behaviour (including on older CPUs, as well as AMD CPUs):

* http://communities.intel.com/thread/21417
* http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=20808627
* http://www.overclock.net/t/974816/i7-2600k-uneven-core-temps/10
* http://www.overclock.net/t/1202210/one-core-running-almost-20-degrees-colder-than-the-rest
* http://forum.corsair.com/v3/showthread.php?t=99095
* http://forums.overclockers.com.au/showthread.php?t=963035
* http://forum.corsair.com/v2/showthread.php?t=98930
* http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/266120-28-core-temp-high
* http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20110220180745AABpfud

For some folks it's one core running too hot, for others it's one core running too cold.

I'm not looking for "I bet it's thermal paste-related" (utter nonsense and on so many levels that I won't even bother replying to such), HSF-related (see above threads; everyone complaining uses different HSFs and sees this issue) or generic user responses ("imi comuptr tehcnihshin lol") on this one. I'm looking for technical explanations that are well-founded. I have a few of my own, but they're extremely far-fetched. The Intel forum link I provided has some of these jhonkas who can't explain the extreme delta yet try to, so I was hoping I could find someone here who actually could explain the difference. Remember: these things are microns apart, so external cooling (HSF, etc.) would affect all cores, not just one.

My far-fetched theory is that these individual cores are not all identical; we all know that companies manufacture cores and proceed to stress test them individually. Some withstand higher clocks/voltage than others. The end result is that company tries a lower clock speed/voltage and if its stable uses the core in a CPU that meets that level of stability/speed. (E.g. if a core isn't stable at 3.5GHz but is fine at 3.2GHz, stick it into a CPU that is intended to be sold as 3.2GHz)

I have a feeling I'm going to have to engage Intel Technical Support on this one, and I really would rather not because historically they "stonewall" me from being able to talk to actual hardware engineers who can explain this behaviour. It's too bad I lost contact years ago with a friend of mine at Intel and another at AMD who did CPU design. :(

Laser printer questions

Hey guys,

Have some questions about laser printers in general. Mine is a Samsung ML-2510.

1) My printer takes forever to warm up this winter. The heat in my apartment is rather spotty. Could that be the cause?

2) This printer is about 6 years old with a total page count of 8543. Do I go by the page count or it's age? I've already had to replace the roller twice and it seems to be needing yet another one.

Thanks :)

Hi guys,

This is NOT the accordian problem, it's a slanted vertical problem.

Samsung ML-2510

I'm trying to print sheets that require three passes to merge three different files.

Pass 1 - perfect
Pass 2 - crinkle slanted outwards from about 1/3 from right, just above halfway down. Slant is like this - \.
Turn over, pass 3 - same crinkle but it now makes a /\.

It's worse on the first few then fades after about the third copy.

Any ideas?

Thanks :D
