Hi there, I was just wondering if you could help me with a problem that I am having.

I am running windows XP pro SP3 on my pc.

I am having a problem where Windows XP wont recognise my CD/DVD drive. It is recongnised in the bios and it phyically opens and closes but wont read any CDs or DVDs. In the device manager it says that the drivers are missing. DVD/CDs use drivers ???

I have been told to change registry values and this should fix the problem, so that I can read and CDs and DVDs, but I am not sure what to do. Can someone please help me fix this problem.

Thankyou for any help

Cheers

When Installing any of them when Im about to delete all the data to install the OS it doesn't provide me with the real HD space as its not even recognizing it. Im aware that its because this computer has a SSD drive and I need the sata drivers for it but thats another problem. Ive tried searching on the internet without any luck. Ive seen many pages showing how to install Windows 7 on this specific machine but it just doesnt work for me...any help :(

where is my new harddrive?

My computer has two ide harddrives (/dev/sda and /dev/sdb). I want to move everything onto a single SATA drive. I plugged it in, but it isn't showing up. Not in my bios, and my kernel isn't picking it up. I tried plugging into both SATA ports on my motherboard, and tried using 2 different SATA cables. Touching the hard drive I can feel it vibrating and the top of the drive is a little warm, so I assume that it is connected to the PSU.

Anyway, here are my specs:
Motherboard Manufacturer and Model: ASUS K8V-X
CPU/Speed: AMD Athlon 3000+ Socket 754
RAM Manufacturer/Type/Module Size: 2GB
CDRW/CDROM/DVD Manufacturer and Spec: 2 DVD drives
Disk Drive(s): Manufacturer and Spec: WD 80GB, Maxtor 250GB, Samsung SATA 1TB
Video Card: Manufacturer and Type: GF 7800GS
Sound Card: Manufacturer and Model:
NIC Manufacturer/Model:
Power Supply Brand and Wattage: Antec 400W
Operating System: Arch Linux (2.6.32-ARCH)

Strange boot problem.

I have an old ASUS A7M266 based, dual boot, slackware10.0/xp pro system which I use in linux for F@H and runs 24/7/365.
Turned the monitor on the other day and was greeted by a flashing error msg: no sync.
Tried rebooting several times with no luck so I replaced an old nvidia 64mb agp with an ati 128 mb card and got past the "no sync" problem, unfortunately after recognizing my primary/secondary hdd's, dvd, cdrom, and just before it should reach the bootloader, it hangs. Even locks up while navigating through my bios screens, no ctrl, alt, del, I have to hit the reset button to reboot.
Now, here's the weird part...after hitting the reset button, oh 6 million times, the box made it to the bootloader screen and I booted into slack like nothing was wrong.
At this point I'd have to say the problem was intermittent with an avg. of 5-10 resets necessary to reach the bootloader screen and boot.
Cards/memory are all secure and case has been completely cleaned up, it was incredibly filthy.
Any ideas on what may be the problem?
I know this is an ancient machine, I'm just trying to trouble shoot the problem for future reference.

Please help a newb install a simple dvd/rw drive.

So i just got a new windows 7 pc I had built, i dont pc game, or anything just run it as a media server for music and basically surf the net and what not. I had ncix build it, but i did not include a dvd-rw drive. Since i hardly ever use it, just to install software occasionally, i am now stuck trying to install this drive.

This is my dvd-rw drive

http://reviews.cnet.com/dvd-drives/16x-4x-16x-dvd/4505-3212_7-31000779.html?tag=txt%3bpage

If you roll your mouse over you can see the connections on the back, so far i just have the power hooked up.

This is my motherboard.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=13-128-376-S03&ISList=13-128-376-S01%2c13-128-376-S02%2c13-128-376-S03%2c13-128-376-S04%2c13-128-376-S05&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16813128376&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=GIGABYTE%20GA-MA770-UD3%20AM2%2b%2fAM2%20AMD%20770%20ATX%20AMD%20Motherboard

Now I believe i need an ide cable? I have it hooked into the back of the dvd-rw device, but i dont know where to plug it in, or how on this motherboard? If anyone can comment and help me out.

Re:UPDATE! Help me with new video card, please,

asdfdfdfdfdf, are you here?

Well, not only I bought the video card, but in the process of installing it, my motherboard went dead. No my mistake, just old damn computer.
So I have a new (used) one.
Dell Opti PLex 170L.
Here what I have in it:

Win XP Pro SP 3
Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz
2.79GHx, 512 MB of Ram

GeForce 8400 GS 256MB 64-bit GDDR2

M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496
Kensington Expert Mouse

Now, in some games, the cursors/pointer, which become nice icon itself starts blinking, shaking, and is barely visible.
That happen only when I play full screen. It's just fine on windowed, but way to small to enjoy it.

On one of the games, which is not affected by that problem, I had a choice to change res, so I did to 1280x1024, like my desktop. I doubt that was a culprit.
The affected game (amongst just a few with that pointer problem,) "AtlantisSkyPatrol" worked just fine on my 32MB vid card, but I had a 1 GIG RAM memory then, instead of 512MB now. Will buy another stick soon.
I must admit that I didn't download new drivers yet to Nvida, have just the one from installation CD/windows.. (have dial-up, must go to library to do so there, faster.)

Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

BTW, rest of the video stuff and PC works just great.

[crt/lcd] DVI-D problem on LCD monitor

I currently have this setup:

Athlon 64 x2 6000+ 3.11 ghz
asus 780v-based mobo
4 gb ddr2 ram
radeon hd 4850 512 mb (2 dvi-d ports)
lg l226wtq 22" widescreen lcd monitor (dvi-d and vga ports)

I just had my lcd monitor fixed since it had issues with the power switch (you can turn it off through the power switch, but can't turn it on again, you'd have to unplug/replug it). It worked before I left the service center, but only using the VGA port. When I got home, to my dismay, DVI-d doesn't work at all. The monitor immediately goes into power saving mode. I tried using a spare VGA cable and vga-dvi converter to connect it to the cpu, and it did work, but can only go as far as 1440x900, not the 1680x1050 that it natively handles.

To rule out the video card, I removed it and had the dvi-d cable connect to the motherboard's built-in GPU's DVI-d port, and it still didn't work (won't even display BIOS or POST).

I hope they didn't botch the repair for the LCD, but do you think it's the LCD monitor, or could it be the DVI-D monitor cable (or god forbid, the video card)? Any input is appreciated.

[memory] New Build Blues

Built a new PC since my aging dinosaur was starting to slow down almost irreversibly and now I am having some BSOD issues. So I guess what I am saying is that for right now my main machine isn't folding anything

For the Tech Geeks among us who will ask this is what it is:

Windows Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP2
MSI NF980-G65 Mobo
4gig Kingston Hyper-x DDR3 1600(OC)
AMD AthlonII x2 255
EVGA GeForce 9800 GTX+
all powered by a monsterous 750w PSU of unremembered naming.

I bought the Mem/Mobo?proc all at Fry's in Houston, should I take the mem back and see if I just got bad sticks??

(BTW this is all running under the "Optimized defaults" setup option in the BIOS)
