Slow streaming

Sorry if this is the wrong board.
Simply put I have a decade old Compaq PC.
In the past I had Verizon DSL and was running under 2mb.
I could stream from Netflix and other sites with no problems.
Since moving to Comcast I'm getting 10mb but I can no longer stream.
Basically what happens is the stream starts, it buffers out about a minute, I can even pause it until the buffering stops, it plays the movie for about a minute but then it starts halting and the sound gets misconnected from the lips moving.
My newer laptop does not have this problem nor does my Android phone. I know I should go buy a new computer but I was wondering if anyone has some ideas I could check. It's almost as if the desktop is receiving too much data from 2mb to 10mb and it just gets all hung up. I checked MTU and I have it set for 1492. I still need to do a router (zyxel) and modem (ubee d3.0) firmware upgrade. But I think I'm going to be told that my 10 year old PC is simply too old. It's just odd that it ran movies fine under Verizon but will not under Comcast.
Thoughts?

unknown bios beep

Working on an old home build. Has an MSI mobo with Phoenix cmos.
When booting up, nothing shows up on screen. Getting 1 long beep from the cmos, probably close to 1 second long. Then pauses around 2 seconds, and repeats. So, to me that is 1 long beep.
All of my search results for Phoenix show nothing for 1 long beep, except normal post.
I tried reseating all 3 sticks of ram, and removed power from cd and hard drives. No other hardware changes since I installed new PSU and video card last fall.
Will dig out my post card tomorrow, but thought I'd see what the experts here had to say.

PC turning itself OFF - HELP!

I wrote before about my problem (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r28220524-Help-PC-cycling-ON-and-OFF). I installed an extra fan to blow in from the side and it seemed to work. I spent last week re-installing all my software, settings, customizations, etc. The machine stayed up and I slowly was getting it back to "normal".

And then yesterday, after working all week without any problems, BOOM, it shut itself off and then started to turn itself back on. ( CR*P )

It didn't even let me completely boot up today before it shut down. I am at a total loss to know what to do at this point. I can mostly fake my way around software glitches, but I am especially clueless with hardware glitches.

I re-checked all connections, memory, etc and it all appears fine. It's an ASUS X58 motherboard and it has a "memory check" button which runs memory diagnostics; all of which comes back as fine. I have an Intel i7 - 950 processor, 6 gb memory, 2 1 Gb hard drives, GeForce GT 430 1Gb video card (I am not a gamer and the card does just fine for me), running windows 7 pro 64kb. I have a cooler master 750W power supply which should be overkill for what I am running (or maybe I only think it should be enough - but it worked for the last 2 years without any problems).

Right now all I have for access is my old netbook and yikes it is soooo slow!

I would appreciate any advice on what to do at this point. I have no trust in bringing it in to a local "geek squad"; too many stories about them. Please help.

Thanks in advance,

Using a sound card with a graphics card?

I have a Dell GX620. I put in a NVIDIA Geoforce 210. I have this hooked up to a Sony reciver via hdmi. With the integrated sound, I've never been able to get surround through the reciever (which can do up to 7.1). I was hoping I could just disable the old and put in a Creative Audigy SE sound card and that would process the sound through the graphics card so the hdmi would carry the surround. I'm guessing that it is more involved than this since it isn't working. Is there a way to have the sound card do the sound and then have the graphics card send it through the hdmi?

Monitor and TV setup help

I have a 27" desktop LED monitor and a 42" LED TV in the same room. Both are connected through HDMI (Nvidia GTX680). Mainly I only want to use the 42" TV for gaming, and right now have the two screens setup to mirror (duplicate).

(stupid) Question: If one of the two screens is powered off, does that remove the load of the 2nd mirrored display from the GPU? It seems easiest to me right now to just mirror the displays and only have turned on the one I'm using.

Audio: I have a big problem here. For the desktop LED Monitor, I'm using the onboard Realtek analog jack to a set of desktop speakers (labeled as 'speakers' in Windows Playback Devices). For the LED TV, I'm using the HDMI digital audio. Right now that HDMI audio is set in Playback Devices (Win7) to be the default audio.

Also, even if the LED TV is powered off, the 'Speakers' are not used. I originally assumed if the TV was powered off, Windows would automatically switch to using 'Speakers' which are enabled and working. But, it doesn't work that way - Windows only seems to use the HDMI to the TV not matter what.

I'd love either both the 'Speakers' (Realtek andalog) and the TV HDMI to be working at the same time or perhaps there's some easy way to flip back and forth. The only thing I can see to do now is to open playback devices and change the default (which is a pain and for some reason when I make the HDMI not default and try to set it back as the default, it's touchy and takes a little bit to start working right).

Thanks for any advice.

Floppy LED won't turn off

What is wrong here? I connected an floppy cable (twisted end on the 3 1/2' floppy drive and the line on the wire is lined up with 'pin 1') and I plugged in the power cable. Then I enabled it in the BIOS '3 1/2' 1.4MB for Drive A'. The drive does seek but the LED stays on, shouldn't turn off when the drive is idle?

HP 8440p keyboard replacement

I have an HP 8440p notebook. The thing is a workhorse, and essentially my machine for everything. Two of the keys are sticking thanks to a small beer spill and my 18 month old son ripped off the #4 key. So, time to replace the keyboard. I've replaced keyboards on mostly Dell machines before without a problem. I quickly googled the replacement process on this HP unit, and seems easier. What I am confused with is where to buy...

Anything on ebay in NEW condition is $20-$30 shipped from China, or $150 from domestic sellers. I don't buy keyboards enough to know where to go. Suggestions? Or am I alright with the $25 units from China? Physically it looks the same, I just don't understand the wide price variance. (When I googled this keyboard I got prices as low as $20, a bunch in the $35-$55 range and then $150+.

Goal: Get the OEM keyboard for as little money as possible. Time is not an issue. Suggestions?

Question on Repair of HP S3323W Slimine PC

A Few Months back, Power supply died on this older Desktop, watched some youtube videos online of Slimline Power supply replacement, seems like a lot of labor to go thru. So I wonder if it's really worth repairing or having a local shop repair it.

Debating on what to do with that little PC, might be best just to save for Mom a New AMD APU System, than repair this one. Last time I tried repairing another slimline PC, removed CPU heatsink as instructions said, and appears it fried the older system. So lieary of trying again with this one

My monitors are posessed... I swear!

Okay so for the last two year I have had dual monitors set up on my desktop PC. I'm running Windows 7. About a month ago, I came home to find that Windows had done an update while I was away and one of my monitors was turned off. I am assuming that one of the monitors is dying but wanted to see if anyone had a suggestion for me.

The weird parts are:

when the computer boots up, both monitors power on but the digital display stays on.

When I unplug the digital display, the other monitor comes on

When I change the graphics settings to extended desktop, both monitors turn on but after about a min the non digital display turns off.

Through the graphics options, I can change the output to the non-digital display and that works for about a minute.

Any suggestions, I am running out of hair to pull out.

Thanks!

Fans speed qustion

Something just does not make any sense. It does not matter if i am running all of the fans full speed or half the speed. I do have very basic PC case so maybe it is restricting airflow meaning the case traps the heat.

What do you think could be the problem?

ATI Radeon question.

NB. Economics do not figure in this problem. I am not a Gamer.

Hi, I have an ATI Radeon x1950gt with a VGA connector. I am assuming it is an early model as all the others don't have a VGA con.
I bought it 2nd hand for a couple of pound ( $5.00 ). I bought because it had a Colorpower silent cooler system and it intrigued me.
After stripping it down to clean and replace the Thermal paste I noticed that one of the capacitors was blown, ( FZ69 1500 6.3v ). I installed the card and it ran well for about one month when it then blew another FZ69 cap. I stripped it down and noticed two of the remaining three FZ69s were swollen. I then reinserted the card and found that it wouldn't boot. Screen message ( in Red text ) stated to insert card properly . I removed the card and replaced it with a Nvidia and the comp booted OK.
I am considering replacing all the caps with Panasonic caps but am now wondering if maybe the card is Kaput!
I checked into the quality of the FZ caps and also wonder if they were of the bad batches that appeared a few years back.
My question is, is the card Ok?
NB. The Nvidia card temp runs at 63c, idles 60c so I am assuming that the ATI would be slightly higher, but well within the Caps temp range and therefore I am hoping that it is just crappy caps.
Would appreciate any thoughts.

[motherboard] will windows 7 motherboard drivers on a windows 8

By Saturday I should an ssd with windows 8 for a boot drive, naturally I want to have the drivers for my motherboard for best performance. I have this motherboard, asrock extreme 4 gen 3.
http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?
Model=P67%20Extreme4%20Gen3

This is a list of drivers they have for windows 8 :http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Download&os=Beta&Model=P67%20Extreme4%20Gen3

for windows 7 theres quite a bit more : http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?cat=Download&os=Win764&Model=P67%20Extreme4%20Gen3

I think for sure I'd need the Realtek high definition audio driver, INF driver, Realtek Lan driver Etron USB 3.0 driver from there. possibly the Marvell SATA3 driver, and the other ones too. Will the windows 7 ones work on windows 8? I'l probably end up installing all the drivers they have listed for it if so.

[motherboard] help installing a fan

I have a ASUS Sabertooth X58 motherboard with an Intel i7 3.07G processor. I mentioned in a previous thread how my PC started cycling ON/OFF/ON/OFF etc. Everything had been working fine from when I built it about 2 years ago until now. It undid my RAID configuration (which will be another story later). I put a little desk fan next to the box (a HAF Cooler Master) and blowing in the extra air seems to have helped. At least it hasn't shut itself down for a couple of days.

So I decided to buy an additional fan to mount on the inside of the case, in the side position. There is already a fan on the front of the box, one on the back, and the usual fan for the processor and power supply (a Cooler Master GX 750w).

My question may be a bit simple minded, but which way should I have the fan blowing? The front fan blows in, back fan blows out. What about the side fan? My desk fan blows in of course, so I was thinking I should replicate that. On the other hand, I thought maybe the fan should blow out like the back of the box. It seems like it should be obvious, and it may be to you, but I am dumb when it comes to this.

I also figured I would put some thermal paste on the processor while I was doing this. Does that seem like a good idea?

Ultimately, I will need to rebuild my RAID structure as well, but want to do this one step at a time.

TIA,
