What hard drive to go with?

I currently have a single 750 GB internal hard drive as well as a single 1 TB external hard drive that I use for backing up important data.

For the past 6 months or so, I've been running out of space on my 750 GB drive and I think it's time to install a 2nd drive for my data and use this drive for OS/Apps/VMWare.

The new drive will only been used for storage, it will hold a lot of data. I have been looking at these "green" drives as the cost is cheaper as well as power use, but I am wondering just how slow these drives are? Again, it won't be used for a OS drive, just storage.

I am looking to spend around $100 and would like no less than 1 TB but would prefer 1.5 TB. Any Suggestions?

Thanks.

Supercomputer!

I have been toying with ideas on building a "supercomputer". I am some what familiar with computers and stuff but I am unsure if what I am thinking is more like science-fiction:

Build a server type rack in a closet that has been fitted with proper ventilation and cooling.
Inside the server rack build 4 quad core AMD processor mobo's with 8GB RAM each (Probably DDR2).
In a different part of the rack place 4 hard drives 2 1TB 7200RPM drives and 2 150GB+/- SSD's. (1 SSD is for the operating system)
Run all this power remotely from another room with a laptop base (no monitor on the laptop) and use remote on-the-wall Monitors.

Where I get a little fuzzy is the possibility of connecting the "closet mobo's" in a kind of dasiy chain and run just one video/sound/internet card from them and being able to control all this from a remote unit and make it all work as "one unit".

Is this a pipe dream or is it feasible? (not smoking anything :D)

George

Edit: If I am unclear please ask pointed questions and I will try to answer them.

What is the fastest processor can I use with my older board?

Ok. Here is the deal. I have been converted to a Mac user and I need some help for my "slave machine" I use it to rip DVD's that I own so that I can play them on my computers and stream them from the 360.

Right now the motherboard is a KV-85 Abit.

I have a Sempron 3000 in there now and the ripping is encoding and the ripping is going to take me forever!

What is the fastest processor I can put in with this board? My RAM is maxxed at 2GB and I recently installed Windows 7 without any issues.

What would help me most? I really dont want to buy a new machine. 1-2 hours of encoding will work for me. 4hrs will not :)

Thanks for any help you can give me.

RAM Timing Discussion

What is the downside of running RAM that's timing is 8-8-8-21 at 9-9-9-24 or something other than what it's supposed to be? This something I've always been curious about and I'd like to hear from people with real world experience.

Looking for a computer for web surfing/email

Looking to get a computer for my kitchen desk. Doesn't need to have all the bells and whistles. It'll really be used for web surfing and email. I have a computer in my home office that I use for everything else (including gaming) I have it down to these 2 choices - which would you guys recommend? I like the second one since it has a faster processor and wireless keyboard/mouse and touchscreen - but really not sure I need to spend the extra $ for these features.
