Upgrading to Q9550 possible?

I have an Abit IP35 Pro LGA775 Motherboard presently running an Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 processor. I am considering upgrading this CPU to the Quad Core Q9550.
I have read some things online that make me cautious about any potential Quad Core CPU upgrade on my Abit MB.

According to (now defunct) Abit, the IP-35 Pro Motherboard will support the Q9550 (45nm) processor with their last official BIOS revision 17,
which I have already successfully "flashed" to in preparation for a CPU upgrade.

My caution arises from some comments from posts of people who claim to have been unable to use either any 45nm CPU,
or even more specifically, the Q9550 processor and the Abit IP-35 Pro MB combination!

One guy claims there is only a 25% success rate, though he did not elaborate on how he arrived at this percentage?
I have gone as far as checking through the many Newegg reviews of the Q9550 processor, looking for any mention of my Abit IP-35 Pro MB and this processor without finding any.

I'm wondering now whether it indeed would be a "gamble" to combine this Quad Core with my Abit MB? Abit says it is NO gamble, that these two will work together ...but Abit is GONE!

I am aware of an unofficial (?) Beta BIOS revision 18, but even this revision doesn't seem to have resolved the compatibility problem for all.

Anybody have any knowledge or comments on this situation?
I would appreciate reading any personal experience with this combination.

Thanks

AMD build, your ideas requested please

Hey guys. I have a friend that is fed up with their old computer and for quite a while (2 years now) he has wanted for me to build him something for him and his family.

The system would be primarily for web business, other business, very light gaming if any at all, TVoverIP possibly, and so on. Because of his needs I suggested him considering an AMD AM3 quad core based system (it will be quite a while before he replaces this build, so at the least I think he needs a tri or quad core, hopefully he will help with teams helix and discovery). We figure a decent board with video integrated on the board, but that will allow the addition of a video card later if needs be.

I hope for a board with very good power circuitry on it, however many phase designed as somebody who wanted to OC mildly would use (OCing won't happen right off, but it would be good to include the possibility of it). It would be nice if the video outputs included DVI as well as analogue.

I don't know if he is going to get a new monitor or not yet, though the possibility is no, not right away, but later.

As far as cases go, I will possibly go to Coolermaster's Outlet online store here:

http://cmstore.coolermaster-usa.com/advanced_search_result.php?keywords=mid+tower+refurbished&x=0&y=0

Or if anyone suggests any other refurb outlets, please share (one of you guys told me about another outlet of another popular manufacturer, but I don't recall it).

Naturally, a 450 watt or better supply, Corsair, or Seasonic, or Enermax, or what you all might suggest.

http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10006428

For mainboard I don't know the different chipsets that include video, but I'd like suggestions for AM3, and IIRC, some have "sideport" RAM?

I also think that 2 x 2GB of RAM is fine, perhaps a system based upon DDR3 since soon enough DDR2 will fade into the past and DDR3 will be easier and cheaper to get at that point.

We have a HD, though I forget the make, model, etcetera.

Burner will probably be EIDE/PATA so as to leave the SATA connectors available for more HDs, but I can be talked out of it. It would be nice if the burner did lightscribe and was not a Lite On since I lost confidence in them a while ago. Prices appear to have gone up on ZZF!

We want to shop from ZZF and other e-tailers that won't have to charge tax like Newegg has to because we are in Tennessee and must pay taxes. Actually, he lives in Kentucky, so if we can order at my place in TN but ship it to Kentucky, perhaps we can shop at newegg. The thing is that there are a number of other great merchants, such as mwave and others I have forgotten the name of. One such dealer had an employee that frequented our forum here, they are based in Houston, but I don't recall their name.

Please recommend which AM3 to get, and if you agree that going with a DDR3 based solution is wise...

Gigabyte, ASUS, EVGA, XFX, etcetera for mainboards with extra nice warranties will help, we probably will be buying win7 OEM, so if a mainboard goes we will want to replace it with the same board so as to not have to buy another Windows license!

Any other advice, please don't hesitate to suggest. We're looking at about 700 bucks, give or take and if it can be well done at or under 600, that would rule!

2.1 speakers

I'm not really sure where to post this.

I have a new LG 32LF11 32" LCD HDTV and the speakers on it are atrocious. It's louder behind the TV than in front of it.

Can anyone recommend any small 2.1 speakers that can run off it's own power? I'm not looking for anything big.

The 21 year old CRT TV I'm replacing it with had far better speakers. Rather annoyed, but whatever - $400 TV.

I'm looking to purchase a 2.5 inch external 7200 RPM hard drive for Final Cut Pro backup so I can shuttle data between multiple computers
Does anybody have any good recommendations?
I'm a beginning Broadcast Major
Thanks in advance
I came across this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822145275 the 500 GB Hitachi 7200 RPM 2.5 inch internal HD and the Rosewill RX82-MP-SUF82-BLK Aluminum 2.5" Black enclosure.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817182183

Is this the best way to go? or should I will get a "prebuilt" portable hard drive? I need something that will be extremely reliable. Does anyone have any recommendations on a 1TB 3.5" Desktop external HD? I have a four year old 300 GB external Seagate that I like to replace it with this one and use the current 300 GB as a backup to my laptop HD in my MacBook Pro for video projects
Please Help! :)

Potential PSU upgrade

I don't need one at the moment and I know things are subject to change later on so hopefully this won't be a wash. I'm looking at upgrading my video card in an equally aging system. See this link for the video card thread: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r23457152-8500GT-upgrade

Spec on my current system so you don't have to visit that thread.
ASUS M2A-VM HDMI
AMD Athlon X2 4800
2GB DDR2 800 Dual Channel
Single SATA HD
Pair PATA DVD burners
Geforce 8500GT likely getting replaced with a 9800GT.

So far my 400W PSU is sufficient to handle my system as is but the 9800 may push things over the edge. I'm also aware I could benefit from an overall upgrade in the near future. As such I figure if I end up having to replace my PSU to support my new card I should get one I can carry over to a new build as well.

I'll definitely want a quad core as it would be pointless to stick with dual core. DDR3 will also be a must as DDR2 prices already seem to be going up (could have been for a while, I just haven't been paying attention lately). I won't be getting cutting edge stuff unless I get a smoking deal on something like an i7. So what kind of PSU would be needed to support a mid level C2Q/Phenom system?

I'd like to keep the price around maybe $75 not including shipping or anything. I see Newegg has an OCZ 700W PSU for $80 before MIR which I could probably swing but that would be about the upper end of my budget. Likewise I would assume 700W would be way more than I need and can probably go for a smaller/cheaper one. I don't plan on any extra HD's as I have a dedicated file server for that and my DVD drives are hardly ever used so the only real load will be the CPU and GPU. The GPU would probably carry over to the new build.

Keyboard Flipping Out

My roommate has a rig that does some weird stuff sometimes. I know this issue is hardware related but I don't know where to begin.

When he types things sometimes, the keyboard will flip out and insert random characters here and there. He was trying to login to facebook and got a huge string of random nonsense when he hit "Backspace" on the keyboard. A few seconds later it stopped and he continued on his way.

We tried different USB ports and different keyboards and had similar results.

Mouse seems to work fine, only the keyboard is the one acting up.

Anyone have any ideas? It's pretty random at best as to when this happens...but I'm willing to try any suggestions.

Oh, and we just did a clean install of Windows 7 so we know its not a weird program sitting in the background.

[USB 3.0] SuperSpeed USB.

Did a search and didn't find anything here.

USB will be coming out with a new USB format, called SuperSpeed USB aka USB 3.0. The new hardware - which will be fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1.1 will be offering speeds that are 10X faster than the current USB 2.0 (speeds should be around 5Gbps) or in real transfer - about 490MB/sec.

It should be interesting for anyone that wants to boot off of a USB stick. Also will be useful for any movie editor or backing up your HD. With these type of speeds, you could back up a 1 TB HD in about 33 minutes. Transfer a movie you downloaded in about 1.5 seconds.

Thoughts, anyone?
