Upgrading My Computer with these Components.

I have decided it is time to upgrade my rig I built from scratch in 2006. (The specs are in my profile). I will be using the same case, data drives and optical drives. My most intense usage will be video editing. I do a lot of Photoshop also. This will also be a move from Win XP to Win 7.

Here is the list as it stands at this point in time. The memory and PSU have free shipping, so planning ordering those today or within the next 2 or 3 days. I’ll order the rest at the same time a couple of days later.

I am open to suggestions on everything except the SSD and Memory. Those two I’m sticking with, but still might go 1866 on the memory. Unsure about that. I might be flexible on the rest, but kind of like what I have. I’ve used an AMD processor since 2006 and very pleased with it. I won’t be OC’ing and don’t play games. Video editing will be most intense use. In this list, does anyone see any bottlenecks?

Question about video card

I am building a system for my office with an I5 3570K , a SanDisk Ultra Plus SDSSDHP-256G-G2, and this ram (16GB) and motherboard:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220593

http://www.microcenter.com/product/386363/GA-Z77X-D3H_LGA_1155_Z77_ATX_Intel_Motherboard

I also have this video card new in the box (bought a couple of years ago):

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161364&Tpk=h545h1g&IsVirtualParent=1

I will be using this with 2 Asus VE247H monitors in extended desktop mode and will be mainly using it for normal office stuff like MS office, web, email, and some AutoCAD and possibly some minor picture and iphone/flipcam video editing for our website. Nothing too demanding on the video as far as I know.

I was wondering since the MOBO (and onboard graphics) is quite a bit newer I would be better off using the onboard graphics or using the older video card. I always thought if you have the choice you would be better off taking the load off the CPU and using a separate card but these new computers are so damn fast that I'm not sure it will matter.

Any feedback is appreciated.

Graphic issue - looking for thoughts

Just looking for some thoughts, I am having this issue with random graphic artifacts, example, TF2 will randomly freeze with blue dots on the screen, when not in the game, and this is on the desktop, I can see little lines flashing randomly on the screen. At first, it was lines flashing after closing something like YouTube lines would flash on the screen as well. I was using an XFX 6670, called them, explained the issue and they thought it was a bad card, I ended up going to Compusa to pick up another card, and still seeing the same symptoms. I am thinking the motherboard may be failing and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas or thoughts.

Point of Saturation

Anyone feel like they've hit the point of too many systems? Case in point I have the following:

Laptops:

Thinkpad T61
Core 2 Duo 2.4 Ghz
2Gb RAM
100Gb HDD

Sony Vaio S

problems with dell perc 5

Guys I have a perc 5i controller that I run in our home file server. We have a total of 8 drives connected to the controller I am using 2 virtual disk groups on the controller. The first raid 5 is made up of all Samsung disk the second raid 5 is made up 3 WD Reds. If we copy data to both raid 5 groups on the controller the system locks up and reboots. I think this has something to do with the raid controller policy. The controller has three settings write through, write back with BBU, and always write back. If I each virtual disk group to use write through everything works fine however if I'm using the other two settings the server will lock up and reboot. I am starting to wonder if this is a bad battery on the raid controller. BTW guys this system runs Windows Server 2012. Now let me give you guys more information on how the drives are connected but I don't think it has anything to do with the problem. First off the Samsungs are Sata 3 and the Reds are Sata 6. I have 4 Samsungs connected to the first connector and 1 connects to the second connector. I also have the 3 Sata 6 Reds connected to the second connector. Anyway let me know what you all think

advice needed for a new computer

It has been quite some time since I built my current computer, so I think the time has come to replace it. I need some advice on (mostly) motherboard, but any opinion is welcome.
What I need or intend to use it for:
-- it is mostly for development use, no video/picture editing, no video games. So, a just decent video adapter will suffice.
-- I am looking for an i5/i7. Not that I need that i7 performance per se, but an i7 may mean I could hold on to it a bit longer.
-- I do need lots of RAM, at least 16GB
-- large disk, minimum 1TB, preferably 2TB.
-- Gb ethernet, wifi on MB would be nice, as some work I am currently doing involves wifi.
-- here is the difficult part as regards to the MB; It has to have support for linux.

So, any ideas on which motherboard should I settle on?

Best size for computer monitor?

I was hoping for some assistance.

I'm picking out a new computer monitor for my sister's new desktop computer. She is used to using a (non-widescreen) LG E1910 19" Flatron Monitor, but I figured a widescreen would be fine. Plus, it's much more of a selection out there.

Her primary and main uses are web browsing (Internet Explorer), Microsoft Word and iTunes.

What size for a widescreen computer monitor do you think would be best? She will have Integrated Intel HD Graphics [DVI-I & DVI-D, DX 10.1]

She wouldn't want to use the monitor in "portrait mode", and she would like very clear, sharp text. I'm assuming she wouldn't want a huge difference from the traditional 19" monitor, but I know widescreen would be a little different, which should be fine.

Any input and guidance on what size would be ideal will be very helpful and appreciated. Thank you so much!!

Question about Memory

I am looking to build a new PC for my main work computer and I have 2 packs (16GB) of this memory that I got on here last year for a great price and just put away:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820220593

I have everything else except a motherboard and CPU. I am considering a Core i5 3570K 3.4GHz LGA 1155 Processor since they are on sale at Micro Center for $169 and was wondering if there would be any issues using this memory with the Intel processor since it seems to be made for AMD processors. If it's a problem I can just resell it on here and buy something else. Any info is appreciated.

[Parts Check] i3 or i5 for office type pc

I'm building a couple pcs for my small office. It's mostly browsing and ms office. Might end up with some light graphics editing.
I'm going with ssds and plenty of ram likely on a b75 board but I'm not sure about the processor choices:

I'm looking at the i3-3225 which is the 3.3ghz with HD4000. If I go with an i3 it seems like the best deal only a couple bucks more than the HD2500 version and the extra 0.1ghz on the 3240 doesn't seem worth the money.

For about $50 more per pc I could go with an i5-3330 which is 3.0 ghz but 4 cores and 6mb cache and HD2500.

I'm hoping to get 3-4 years out of these but will the upgrade to the i5 and downgrade of graphics be worth the extra cost?

[Laptop] Battery ? Keeping it on AC

I just bought a new laptop a couple weeks ago.
I run it on AC about 98% of the time (it sits on my desk).
Will keeping it in the laptop while it is plugged in result in any harm to the battery?
I read somewhere not to overcharge it. Is that even possible?

Seagate 600 SSD: The Start of Seagate's SSD Line

quote:By J.R. Nelson, DesktopReview Editor | Tuesday, May 07, 2013 | 424 Reads

The Seagate 600 SSD is the company's first consumer-oriented solid state drive. It'll come in quantities of up to 480GB, while maintaining an extremely svelte 5mm (or 7mm, depending on model) height - naturally, it comes in a 2.5-inch form factor.

Seagate doubled down on the tech behind the 600 SSD and created the 600 Pro SSD - the company is promising an industry maximum IOPS per watt, which is an important consideration for the intended end users of the drives - datacenter and cloud storage providers. It reportedly uses just 2.8 watts on average, and automatically adjusts its energy use depending on workload.

First dead ssd

I had my first dead SSD the other day. On my son's PC. It was a SanDisk Extreme SSD and is one of the newer SSD's we have. The model is SSDSDX-240G and it's a 240 GB drive. It worked for about a month prior to failure, an identical unit purchased at the same time, continues to function without issue.

Out of approximately 15 SSD's over a 3 year period, this is our first failure.

The device won't power up, can't be recognized by any of several PC's. We tried known working cables and power, and used the manufacturer utility to try and test the drive, the utility couldn't find it.

Fortunately he had a 3 day old image backup, which we were able to restore to another SSD quickly.
