[Speed Problem] getting only 384k downstream

Line works for 3 weeks.

Originally was able to connect at 768k, now it is only 384k.

Changed filters, wires from filter to dsl modem, dsl model (westel and motorolla), connect with linksys router in the middle or directly pc to modem - still 384k.

Vista home premium 32 bit.

It looks like line was capped after it was put in service.

phone line: [mod note - number removed for privacy -fb]

Any way to get 768k that was promised with this basic dsl?

Unbundled but contracted

At&t will allow me to unbundle my DSL if I agree to a 1 year contract.

I'm seriously considering this move because I am no longer able to keep my phone bill under the allotted portion of our fixed income, and have had to start pulling from other bills, and begging for credits (complaining about the littlest things) to make ends meet.

I'm weighing a Magic Jack vs. Skype, and currently the favor sit's heavily in favor of MJ.

I feel that forcing a contract in lieu of unbundling is anti-competetive, but what have ya, Ma bell dances to the beat of it's own drum.

[Line Problem] Modem continually reboots

I have made the following case report with ATT (YA019101) in regards to my DSL modem continuously rebooting all day long but so far nothing has been done. They were supposed to come & inspect the lines but have never shown up. Do you guys/gals have any ideas why this stable connection suddenly went south & reboots all day/night? The problem started about two weeks ago.

[Speed Problem] Speed Down - Holt, MI

Hey all,

I'm getting extremely bad download speeds here in Holt, MI. It's been going on for a few hours now and Speakeasy tests have been about 800kbps at best. I have the 3mb connection package and usually get this speed. Any ideas or knowledge of an issue in this area at the moment?

Michigan Outage

There's a outage in Michigan right now in the Warren and Sterling Heights area.

My SS5100B's internet LED started blinking green somewhere between 11:00am and 12:15pm.

I called but as usual, they first try to blame your PC for the problem. All I wanted was a good dialup number!

Question on 2wire Gateway

Hi

A while back i was on the phone with Tier 1 support with at&t discussing things, and they told me to set my lan ip back to 192.168.1 type thing, i had it on 10.0.0.X type before that...would that matter with stability or any issues? Just curious on that matter, i should've asked on this sooner actually

Generic tech question-dsl but no dial tone on one extension?

Before I call AT&T or have to pay for customer-side-of-NID repair:

Our DSL is line-shared on xxx-xxx-0504, and we have the fax machine on 0504 also. The fax machine and DSL modem plug into the same outlet, with a filter of course. Fax and DSL have coexisted without problem for a long time, but faxing stopped wroking yesterday. DSL has worked fine all along. Troubleshooting today discloses that there is dialtone on 0504 at the NID, and at the two other (unused) jacks to which 0504 is wired. Only the jack in my office has no dialtone, ergo no fax...but DSL from that jack continues to work.

Sigh. Aside from shifting the fax machine to a jack with dial tone (thank heavens we switched to a wireless all-in-one), any suggestions for a not-sophisticated but willing D-I-Yer on how to find the dialtone problem, before I have to call either AT&T or a private telephone guy? House is 120 years old and much of the phone wiring predates our 1997 purchase of the house. Or should I just bite the bullet and call in the experts?

[Line Problem] Intermittent loss of DSL Sync w/SS4100

Hello, I have spent a few nights fighting with tech support over the phone with "Kevin" and "Dusty" which I am exceptionally certain are aliases, given the accent they spoke with.

Long story short, from time to time my modem loses sync, the DSL light will alternate between red and green, flashes red about 15x (roughly 3 seconds) then flashes green for 15x (another 3 seconds).

Full version of the story: Started 2-3 nights ago. In the evening it lost sync, didn't bother calling since it was late. Next day light was steady green but still no connection. Called tech support, at that point a power cycle fixed it. I felt like an idiot, but I SWEAR I did power cycle 3x when the line had no sync. Modem lost sync again last night, technician spent about 30 minutes making me power cycle and then running tests. Could not figure it out. He told me a technician would call within an hour. A little while later I got a call from an automated dialer, pressed 0 for technician. 17 minute hold. While I hold I glanced at the modem, light was green, tested and I had internet. Since it was nearly 10pm I hung up. Less than an hour later, light was flashing red again. I am tired of calling them.

Responses to the questions suggested before posting:

I have had my DSL for 3 years now, only issues are the occassional hang which a power cycle of the modem always fixes. My Package is the 6 megabit "Elite" package, and I have historically gotten 5+ megabit, I have been very pleased with the speeds.

The modem is the speedstream 4100 with 5 lights.

Computer I have been using is a laptop running Vista, but I also have a couple mac's one hard wired one wireless I can use for diagnostic as well.

PPPoE via the modem.

Using WRT54G firewall with the latest official firmware (don't remember the exact version).

Have jacks throughout the house, but only the one in the office is being used. Out of the wall plate it goes into a splitter, the splitter feeds the DSL modem and a cordless phone. I am also using a add a jack extender (the kind that uses the power outlet) to let my Dish network reciever connect.

Part of me wonders if the problems are related to the Uverse rollout. A reliable source tells me my area goes live 6/29 with Uverse. If my house is covered I intend to switch, but I would like to have functioning internet for the next 2-3 weeks if possible!

Thanks in advance for any help!

ping vs tracert: a highly technical problem

Well, anyone up to the task? Let me explain this problem I've been having for the past 8 months.

First, my laptop setup:
AMD Turion 64 MT40 2.2GHz
ATI Mobility X700 with 512mb dedicated ram, PCIE, Omega 3.8.442
2gig ram
7200 rpm HD with plenty of blank space
onboard network

XP Pro sp3 (fresh reformat as of a week ago)
Nod 32 4.0

Plugged directly into my motor ooola! (circumventing the wtf'ness there) 2210-02-1002, on a 6mb AT&T DSL

THE PROBLEM:
I play Fallen Empire: Legions quite regularly, and I have gotten a consistent 180-200 ping to the dedicated servers in NY. I'm in MI. Prior to 8 months ago, with the same set up and connection, I pinged a consistent 50. So I know that the 200 ping I'm getting now is not normal.

When I run speedtest.net to a NY server, I get a good ping, fine DL and UL speeds. When I run ping in cmd to any server, even the game server IP, the ping is fine.

When I run a tracert to the game server IP, OR ANY OTHER IP ADDRESS, the first hop takes 14 seconds EVERY TIME. Never 13, never 15. Now, it does not record that hop as 14 seconds, I mentally count that in my head, it displays "1 ms" for that hop, which is complete bs.

What ever this lag is I'm getting in a tracert that I'm not getting is a ping test, is affecting my ping in game. I've had AT&T tech support out here numerous times the past 8 months, the most recent being the most helpful as they changed the hardware that converts the DSL signal to a FIOS signal, however, changing that hardware did not help a thing.

My tech guy called be back moments ago saying he's running out of things to try.

So my questions to any internet pros are:

1. What's the difference between cmd ping and tracert tests that would cause a 14sec delay on the first hop of the tracert, but not show up at all in the ping?

2. Any idea whats going on?

EDIT: this does not only happen when running tracerts on my laptop, it happens with the tech guys laptop, and my wife's laptop, which leads me to believe it has NOTHING to do with the computer. Also, I'll back that up by saying I have no problems with ping when I go to my parents house and use their AT&T 1.5mb DSL connection wirelessly...

Port Forwarding Issues

I am having issues trying to get the port forwarding working on my ATT DSL. I don't know if I have a setup issue or what but I was hoping someone here will know the problem. I have a Westell modem, the model number is F90-610025-06 and I have that connected to my router which is a Linksys WRT54G. I have went into my router configuration to enable the port forwarding but even when I do that it says the port is still closed. I restarted the router a couple times but to no avail.

So I am wondering if it is the modem that is blocking the ports. I do not know if that is possible but hopefully someone can tell me. From my understanding the PPP is on the modem. The router is set to 192.168.2.1 and the modem 192.168.1.254. I hope the solution is something really simple or if the problem is on ATT's end.
