speedtest fast but actual download speed slow

Hi,

My DL speed has suddenly become slow. When running the speed test at dslreports, the site says my dl speed is 133 kb/s while my upload speed is 200 kb/s. However, when I actually download stuff, such as with megaupload or rapidshare, i experience speeds ranging from 4.0 kb/s to 25 kb/s.

I have Spyware Doctor and Symantec Antivirus running on my computer. I connect to the internet with a realtek wireless 802.11g 54 mbps usb adapter, and my wireless network is from a linksys WRT54g router.

I ran the SG TCP Optimizer for Windows XP and clicked optimal settings. This however did not change anything. I have also unplugged and the linksys router.

Any solutions?

1) Which AT&T DSL Package do you have –
Pro (3.0Mbps down)

2) Which modem brand and model do you have? 2701HG-B

3) Are you using a router? If so, provide the brand and model. no...it's a modem/router

4) Is your PPPoE login info (username & password) entered in the modem, in your router or do you use PPPoE software? Unsure?

5) Describe the lights on the modem when the trouble occurs. All green

6) Confirm that you’ve checked to ensure that ALL devices plugged into the wall jacks serviced by your DSL phone number (except the DSL modem) have filters fitted. Done it

7) Confirm that you’ve powered off the modem and started it again and whether or not that made any changes with your problem. Done it, no change

8) Do you hear any type of noise on the DSL phone line or any other unusual telephone symptoms? nope

9) Provide line stats as follows…
DSL Down Up

[Modem] Motorola 2210 doesn't respond to ping

I have a Motorola 2210-02 with AT&T firmware 7.7.5r8.
This is set up with PPPoE on the modem, smart keepalive connection, and the public IP address used by the computer on the LAN.
Everything is set as hexwiz describes here: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r19864067-
Yet, I can not ping the public IP address from any computer on the Internet.
Traceroute works, and I can also ssh into the machine (a linux box.)
So, it seems that ICMP is blocked.
Is there a way around that, other than bridge mode (which I don't really want to do)?

[Availability] Losing sync every few hours

I am losing sync every few hours. Modem resyncs automatically, and on resync I get different line rates ranging from 4736k to 6016k. I seem to get more drops during the daytime and also get slower line rates during the day. I have tried three different modems and seems to make no difference. Some log info:

DSL not reaching modem

I recently had dry loop DSL installed at the NID, but my modem (Speedstream 4100) doesn't recognize it at the phone jack (blinking red light). The DSL is active, because I can hook the modem at the NID and the light turns green.

Here is the scenario.

There used to be an alarm, but the alarm was not active for years and finally the control panel was removed. I assume there is an RJ131X, but I don't know where it is, so the line was just looped back at the control panel site. That means the RJ31X is still in the system somewhere. The DSL installer commented on the fact the alarm (specifically the RJ31X) was interfering with my old DSL which is shared with my phone line.

The house is wired with 6wire blue, green and orange solid and with white dots. A 4 wire (green, red, yellow, black) was spliced between the blue wires and the NID, and the green and red ran to the RJ31X and the alarm and then looped back to the NID on the yellow and black. I told him to go ahead and wire the 6wire straight to the NID to bypass the alarm circuit with the RJ31X. (That brought up the question of whether an alarm with that sort of bypass spliced at an unlocked NID at the front of the house is completely useless. Wouldn't it be the simplest thing in the world to bypass the alarm?).

So now the blue, blue/white is still line one for the phone (with no more alarm circuit), and I wired the green,green/white to the new DSL line. I wired the green wires at a convenient jack and got nothing.

The kitchen wall mount jack has the orange wires wired in to line two, but I don't see any reason why they would have done that. The orange and green wires at the NID were never used.

Is there anything obvious that could be wrong? What I really need is a tone generator to test whether the line is connected to the jack, but I won't be able to borrow one for a week or two and I would like to get this working before then.

DSL down 2x in 2 weeks and useless reps... in the U.S.!

First off some venting: DSL+phone went down the 16th due to 'upgrades'. They got phone back up that night, but dsl needed daily call-ins to get them to properly fix it by 20th.

DSL went down again the 23rd and I've been getting no real help from the reps. Tech came on the 25th and said 'pole' problem, and was wrong. Yesterday, the 27th, I got confirmation its entirely the CO and port mapping dept/office/whatever that needs to communicate. Phone rep said he'd include 'plenty of stuff' in the comments and would 'make sure' the problem was fixed by calling and speaking to 'the guy' since he was 'in today so it wouldn't be a problem.' Well, another day later and still no dsl.

The problem: I've got a solid dsl signal, but still no internet.
Yesterday, the rep performed this test: He blocked the port and my dsl signal should have been immediately lost, but my modem still reported a solid signal. Not only that, my modem shows I'm still on the elite profile, which the line can't handle. He had me manually pull the phone line out and only then did I lose the signal. That confirmed the modem was fine. He concluded(let me see if I got this right) that I was on the wrong DSLAM and the 6 mbit profile my modem was reporting belonged to whatever DSLAM they had me connected to.

Looking to upgrade Speedstream 4100 modem

Currently using a Motorola Speedstream 4100 modem with a Netgear WNR3500 router.

I'm thinking of upgrading my modem (either from eBay or Best Buy) and I would like to know what the BEST modem (new model or older model) works best for AT&T DSL service (3008/512).

Should I stick with the Speedstream 4100 or is there a better modem out there?

Thanks.
