[Speed Problem] Intermittent DSL Speed Issues

Hi,

Recently I had a problem with my phone line where I could not get a dial tone but I could receive calls. Additionally, I had a lot of static on the line. This also had an adverse effect on my DSL service which became slow and somewhat intermittent.

A tech came out and fixed the phone and now I have a dial tone and a real clear line. Unfortunately, my download and streaming speed is not so good. I have an Ethernet cable connected to my TiVo, so when I tried to stream something from Netflix it started out in hi definition and about halfway through it paused, said “Retrieving”, and dropped the quality to around 40% strength. A few moments later it says “Retrieving” and it gained about 20%. It should stream HD with no issue. Additionally, I tried to stream something online and it was the worst possible quality. My computer is also wired.

[Speed Problem] Flakey DSL actually faster with voice line in us

My DSL is flaking out again.

I've been trying to see what's going on and noticed that I actually get a BETTER CONNECTION with the voiceline in use............

2176 vs 384 (should be 3008) Tested with 2 different modems.

Previously when the DSL is acting up, use of the phone would make things worse......

I don't get it.............

[Line Problem] DSL speed took huge hit and line is now unreliabl

It's been happening more and more recently, but it's gotten especially bad today.

In October, my line was doing well, 6016/768 as it should be. I'm in Castro Valley, CA. See the attached spectrum graph, made using the Deblin tool.

Now, today, look at the other picture. It's pretty much decimated from what it was before. The holes are wider, the slope is not smooth anymore, and so on. It works about as pretty as it looks. The line can barely hold 3200, let alone 6016, on the download.

Any chance I could get somebody from AT&T to take a look at my line? The problem isn't local with my wiring, because at the NID jack, it's the same thing. My modem hasn't changed, either, and I tried resetting it several times, to try and get it to resync at a better rate.

Please let me know best way to proceed. Should I post in DSL Direct?

New Router Ideas / Suggestions

I currently have a 2wire 2701HG and decided I want to use my own router instead. I have several options:

A. Put the 2701 in bridge mode, but I know AT&T won't support that config.

B. Purchase a DSL modem only that AT&T do support.

Any suggestions on which way to go? Which is easier? More convenient? Secure? etc.

If B, then I see there are two official options on the att site.
B1. Netgear DSL Modem Model 6200 at: http://www.att.com/equipment/accessory-details/?q_categoryid=cat2020062&q_sku=sku5480275&q_manufacturer=&q_model=

B2. Motorola DSL Modem Model 3360 at: http://www.att.com/equipment/accessory-details/?q_categoryid=cat2020062&q_sku=sku5520232&q_manufacturer=&q_model=

Not sure which would be a better choice. Any suggestions and personal experiences with either would be welcome. Thanks.

Best place to do PPPoE Authentication

I'm moving from a modem/router combination device to a separate modem and router. Either of the new devices is capable of doing the PPPoE authentication and I'm wondering which is the best way to go?

I would also like to be able to access the modem stats without re-cabling or without reconfiguring PC IP addresses. Is that possible and is it dependent then upon where the PPPoE is done?

Might switch

http://pastebin.com/P3iVYaf7

This is the technical readout of my modem... So far, they say that 1.5mbit is the fastest speed I can attain where I am, and is charging me around 80 bucks a month for that. Now, I got an email saying I hit over the 150GB limit and is imposing overage charges. They are the only dsl provider in my area and fios/uverse is not available where I am. They claim I live too far away from the node to get the higher speeds and they do not know when they will upgrade the area. My city is Fullerton, so I don't know about me being in an "rural" area when my phone gets a 11-15mbit connection... Should I just move to a cable company?

[Home Network] Motorola NVG510 (IPDSLAM) IP Passthrough

I am trying to get my Motorola NVG510 to act as only a modem for my Linksys WRT54G. I have set the NVG510 under the IP Passthrough tab to Allocation Mode:Passthrough,
Passthrough Mode:DHCPS-fixed and
Passthrough Fixed MAC Address:(WRT54G WAN mac address). There is a cable going from a LAN port on the NVG510 to the WAN port on my WRT54G. On the WRT54G I have the internet connection type set to DHCP. The WRT54G will get the external IP, but not the DNS addresses. The DNS it gets via DHCP is the LAN IP of the NVG510. I have tried manually setting OpenDNS IPs as the DNS IPs through both the WRT54G and the client. Either way I am still not able to obtain internet through the WRT54G.

Another option I guess is getting a different gateway that might have a better IP Passthrough/DMZ option. The connection type I have is IPDSLAM. Any suggestions?

How long can I keep regular dsl service?

Is At&t eventually going to force everyone into uverse or can I keep my existing service as-is? Provided i keep paying for it of course.

I've heard that uverse gateways have a SIP ALG that can't be turned off. I have it disabled on my 2wire 2701hg-b. I use voip for phone service and it works fine. It would stop working if I could not disable the SIP ALG on a uverse gateway.

Hi guys, I have a problem with my AT&T DSL that occurs every single night where I'm getting 1.0M on average from the 2701HG-B. I'm on the Elite plan and from the morning to midday, I've been able to get 4.0M-5.5M easily. I tried the 2Wire in all the available phone lines, and the same thing happens. Has other had the same problem?

[Home Network] What DSL router does AT&T provide with gigabit Et

I'm a long time customer of AT&T for my DSL service. For at least the past five years, I've been using the 2Wire 2701HG-B DSL Modem / Router that they provided. Lately, I've turned off the wifi in favor of an Airport Express or two.

Now, I notice that the 100BASE-T Ethernet router is the limitation in my home network (when moving data locally). I could purchase a new router (or maybe just a switch). However, I was thinking that ATT&T must be offering something more modern / higher performance by now.

What do they offer? Is it good? Can I be upgraded?

Thanks.

[General] Why are data caps seen as okay?

Dear At&t,
I have finally gotten home internet, as I have been struggling to pay back due credit card bills and trying to pay for "food" since I moved out on my own. I was so happy to hear it would only be around 30 dollars a month, but your salesman didn't mention to me that I would have a data cap limit. WHY IS THIS SEEN AS OKAY? Why should you limit my download when I pay for your service? I feel as though there is a gigantic ocean of data, but you are telling customers that only one small portion of water exists. It is a lie, and travesty that a corporation is purposely withholding technological advancement to make higher profits. I understand you need money, but you have monopolized cell phones and internet. You have used your salesman to get people to sign out of necessity. I have no choice and I am locked in, but I am hoping other people read this forum and start to think. We are being tricked into thinking that bandwidth is like a natural resource that has a limited source. The truth is you can just make more wires, connect more computers, and invest in infrastructure. OPEC does the same thing. I just wanted to put this opinion out there that regulating my usage is disgusting.

[General] 2Wire bridge to 1:1 NAT?

I have a couple things I need to sort out. I'm tyring to start using the 5 static IPs that we are rumored to have. I can't get any account info out of anyone though. I know that our 2Wire is in bridge mode and a Syswan router handles the PPPoE login and the login ends with @static.sbcglobal.net

Will 1 to 1 NAT work with AT&T and the 2Wire?
How do I find out what my IP addresses are (what is the account website)? I tried to guess that the IPs are less than the IP that the WAN port gets assigned, but so far the NAT isn't working.
