St. Louis DSL Problems?

Anyone having any issues in St. Louis? My browser is spending a lot of time "Looking up...." websites. Sometimes it will just time out and other times it will connect.

Just got off the phone w/ Indian tech support and he says no problems on my line. I just started noticing this this afternoon. Speeds seem OK so I'm leaning towards DNS issues.

Time for a new modem? (4yr Old 5100 w/ univ PwrSply)

My modem has a few sync errors every day, usually at the worst possible times. (playing poker, chatting)

I am going to get VoIP through T-Mobile this month and remove my voice services from AT&T Y! DSL. I want my modem to work as close to 100% as possible and not worry about it dropping out during a phone call (or when playing poker).

I am using a universal power supply (from Wal*Mart) because the original burned out 2 years ago.

My [SS 5100] modem is rated for 12vDC at 700mA (positive tip), but the best I could find was a 3v - 12v DC "AC adapter" at 600mA. I figured a lower mA P/S would be better than a higher one. (900mA)

After 18 months, that one burned out and I replaced it with the same type from the same store. It has been about a year on the 2nd P/S. (3rd if you count the original)

I haven't tried any troubleshooting at the NID yet. Inside wiring is a combo star/daisy topography, where the modem has a direct 'drop' to the NID. However, I am using a DSL filter on that jack, and the voice side is being shared by my all-in-one fax printer and my TiVo. The other jacks in the house are using the filters.

[the modem just reset twice while I was typing last paragraph]

My question is this: Will a newer modem with correct power supply help me with my sync troubles in the long run? If so, which? I've heard good things about the 4100b but AT&T store doesn't sell it anymore.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and help.

Problems with a new Dry-Loop DSL installation.

Hi, let me give you the back story first, so that you can understand my many troubles with ATT.

Back in 2005 through 2007 (and 2008) I had problems using regular POTS service from ATT. I got alot of flak from certain business friends that they would always get a busy signal on my land-line.

I investigated and found at the time that I also received a busy signal when calling my own land line. I called ATT and described the problem. They ran the tests and found various irregularities on the land line.

Every truck roll they sent got *some* of the problem fixed, and it did get progressively better, but it was never perfect in POTS service.

They sent out three trucks and three different technicians found various problems on the line. They "fixed" them and gave vague references to "voltage irregularities", "bad filters" (not on the house end) and I don't remember what else specifically.

Late in 2007 I found out that I could not apparently hang up on telemarketers?! I heard strange beeps and clicks sometimes preceding some cell phone calls from family.

Well, the phone line ~more or less~ worked. I decided not to call ATT about it. I finally did get fed up with not being able to hang up on a call properly and often picked it up even after I had hanged up...only to find the other person still talking as if nothing had ever happened.

I assumed it was some kind of strange wiring issue. I took a non-powered phone and connected it at the NID and made calls and received calls. Same problem. So it wasn't a house wiring issue, seems to be something on ATT's end.

So I decided to simply switch to Dry-Loop DSL. As I really only use the line for the bulk of my entertainment, keeping up with friends and some family surfing.

I was offered a step up from my old Pro DSL plan to Elite. I went for it and I was explained the process of how it was going to be activated. I ordered the 1st of August. The land line was disconnected on the 8th of the same month. The new service was officially started on the 12th.

I looked at the modem statistics and noticed that the line was giving experiencing alot of CRC errors and very weak signal. I called ATT and explained the issue and jumped through all the hoops they asked for. I asked them to look into the weak DSL signal issue and they did multiple tests and confirmed there was a weak signal and an issue on the line.

Eventually I got ahold of the line provisioning or quality department (I forget the proper name). I had an appointment for the 13th of august which just occurred.

The technician looked into the problems and decided to go down the block to some rusty box (RT?) and checked on that end of the wiring. He noted that I had created a straight "homerun" to the NID box with a custom 7ft CAT5E cable I made specifically for this.

I waited as he diagnosed the problems for about 2 hours and then he came back and told me the line from the post to the NID needed to be replaced, that it was very old cabling. He stated that the old cabling was fine for Pro and express speeds but would give intermittent problems for Elite speeds.

He rewired it and did the job and sat in his truck for the better part of an hour with a wire running into the NID on the side of my house and to his laptop in his truck.

He came inside and said he could attain a sync rate at the proper DSL speed after all his hard work. He showed me with his laptop and I confirmed with my own modem that indeed the sync rate was steady at where it should be. (6016/768)

As he pulled off the old telephone cable from the utility pole and refitted the post with proper mounting hardware that was absent for the old line...I checked my modem and noted that it was properly synced at the right rate.

I performed a DSL speed test both here (DSLREPORTS), and on speakeasy as well as ATT's own speed test page.

All showed the exact same speed as I had with PRO.(3.0/512) In fact, it hadn't changed at all. Not even for the new upload speed.

I am wondering if this guy (who did an excellent job!) did some odd stuff to my DSL profile to make it seem as if it were syncing at the right "ELITE" speed. I have read before on these forums where people have trouble getting the ISP to change the profile to the right setting.

(Could an ATT member check this to be sure it is not the case?)

In the speed tests, I never got any more than 2.1mbit to 2.4 in some rare peaks even with "PRO". I am wondering if anyone can investigate to see if the profile was changed properly or assist me in some alternative options with a "marginal line".

I know that my attenuation is high and my SNR is pretty bad (marginal). I don't care about errors as long as I can squeeze a bit more speed than I previously had. (The *upload* is mainly important to me.)

I am also aware the best that my DSL can give me is only 87% of the maximum rating. I'd be happy with just 70% or 80% of a 6mbit connection.

The DMT spectrum graphs and the techreadouts (before and after) can be seen above.

is this a recent change or what?

I can no longer have notices sent via SMTP relays to my mobile phone..

I have a few important services that use this mechanism to send alerts to my mobile..such as, bank transaction notices (ie: fraudulent like behaviour)

and now i see that these relays are denied. why?

Not getting Elite Dsl speed from ATT

I've had Att dsl elite service for several years, I dont normally have any connection problems, periodically i'll check my speed, normally speedtest show 4-5mbs down/600k up , every few months i discover my speeds have gone down to 1.2mbs down/ 600k up . I call att and eventually i get to a 2nd tier support person and they reset something on there end and the speed is back. My Question is has anyone else seen this? are they taking my speed away hoping i wont notice?

Router choking bandwidth?

I've been trying to get as close to the 3.0Mbps of my AT&T Pro package as possible.

I previously had my Speedstream 5100b in bridge mode, with my Linksys WRT54GL running DD-WRT handling the PPP and DHCP duties. I was consistently getting in the 1600-1800kbps range with that. After monkeying with my setup to check my speed at the NID, I decided to put the modem in "normal" mode and adjust the settings on the router to allow the modem to negotiate the PPP connection, and the router handles NAT and DHCP for my computers. I did this so that I can keep an eye on the modem's GUI without moving cables after reading some stuff in the FAQs here on DSLreports.

But my throughput has dropped to sub-1000kbps since this switch. I just ran a speed test and got 970-980 through my router. Swapped the cable, and got 1675kbps direct from the modem.

Anyone familiar with running things this way and can point me to the proper router setting??? Or should I just go back to bridge mode the way I had it before??

Why go with DSL if you have the Cable Internet option

I just don't understand it....why would any customers go with AT&T DSL if they have the option to go with Charter Internet? It is faster and for a cheaper price. The claim that DSL is the same speed no matter how many people use it? Is this really true? I checked the speed 3 times a day: morning, afternoon, night...and all my speed tests came with about the same advertised speed: 5 meg down. Whats the big catch with DSL?

Move line to a closer VRAD?

Currently I'm just out of range for u-verse, the homes that back up to my house do have service - as they were built a little after my subdivision was. They got put on a new VRAD that was built closer to my house (within 1500ft).

Has anyone had any luck getting AT&T to switch them to a closer VRAD?

How to find out future DSL availability

Is there anyway to find out if there are any future plans for DSL deployment in my area. I check online and call by phone and just get an answer of "it's not available". How do you tell if there are any future plans.

Thanks for the help
