QWest 12 and 20Mbps service upload speed?

Can anybody tell me what QWest's upload speeds are for the 12Mpbs and the 20Mbps download options (fiber optic)? I have found that I can get this service now and need to deterine whether I should pressure Comcast for a speed boost or to just go ahead and sign up for QWest.

Thanks!

Qwest's spirit of service has no soul

Recently, moved into Oregon, and shortly began the "quest" of looking for a service provider. Oregon's local ISP, only gave 1.5mbs, for $50 a month -- not going to cut it. Next, Comcast, gave 4mbps for $50 a month -- not bad, but let's keep searching. Finally, arrived at Qwest, 7mbps for the same $50 a month Comcast charged. Bingo! Call to order it.

While talking to the sales person at Qwest, told that their ISP is a joint venture with MSN/Microsoft. Quickly, tell Qwest this is unacceptable. Qwest responds, that they have an alternative plan, without MSN service bonded to their DSL line. Confirm on the phone, that Qwest.net service will be substituted for MSN service.

One week later: Qwest's DSL modem arrives. Open it up, and there is an install CD -- odd. Open up Qwest's pamphlet, outlines install steps. Final step, "insert Qwest install disc". Shit goes down hill after inserting the disc, and connecting the ethernet patch from PC to their modem. After running ipconfig, notice that the PC is on a temporary internet connection. This temporary internet connection, is behind an authorization proxy, that only allows ICMP packets, and blocks all other TCP/IP traffic -- why all the black bag protection? So, after reading the included legalese literature, read this sentence 'Qwest.net DSL service ships with a temporary internet connection, that you may only use to establish your MSN account, and may not be subverted to access the internet at large' Why? Read further, 'The user must install QwestConnect, and QwestRepair, before an internet connection can be made' So, in order to go on the internet, customers have to enable their monitoring software, and install their "QwestConnect" oddness, that bonds customers' PCs to that modem, and only runs on Windows or OSX -- SOL if there is a UNIX machine on the network (mostly).

Qwest.net forces customers to install their software, and keeps cusomters on an internal network until that software is in place. Additionally, customers must sign up for an MSN enabled service, and accept their legal conditions (which when you read, basically says you agree to in no way subvert nor disable any of their advertising).
Right, so when Qwest was called, and ensured that MSN would not be part of the package, that was a bold lie.

Now Disgusted, decided to throw Qwest's modem back in their box, and ship it to them. Qwest, obviously considers their customers nothing more than advertising revenue, and has no ambitions otherwise.

Reasons behind signal issues?

Hi folks, using a 2Wire 2701HG-D modem, which is also modem #2 in the past 3 weeks. Have had DSL here since they introduced the 768 plan a few years ago. Been using it since then. Upgraded from 768 to 1.5 and again to the 7 plan.

Every year, around this time and again in the winter, I start getting spotty service. I have the Upto 7 Meg plan and for the most part the service is speedy, reliable and flat out works great.

Lately however, starting in March, my modem drops me every few minutes. I keep a log and it looks pretty much like this:

1:22pm - Dropped
1:25pm - Dropped
1:28pm - Current Noise Margain: 6 dB
1:35pm - Dropped
1:44pm - "digital fart" while on the phone and line dropped momentarily (voice was fine, kept talking, but checked modem page to see "acquiring DSL signal")
1:45pm - Current Noise Margain: 9 dB
1:50pm - Current Noise Margain: 12 dB
1:55pm - Current Noise Margain: 19 dB
2:00pm - Dropped

I'm on the replacement modem I was sent two weeks ago and I'm using the in-box filter which a tech installed last week. Before he installed it, my inside line quality was pretty horrid - or there was noise, whatever.
I had another tech out the next day because I was still getting dropped. He checked the line quality again with the same kind of device and found that I was getting superb quality inside, and that there wasn't a reason he could see why it would drop me.

In the period of typing this, I've been dropped twice and it reconnects. The modem is NOT rebooting, as I can access the modem control panel while the DSL light blinks.

The most it stays down is a few minutes with most episodes lasting 10-20 seconds or so.

Today I had a CSR on the line who was apparently talking to a "tech" and that "tech" told him to tell me I had too many computers connected to the modem (I use a gigabit switch for my local network, and there's about 7 devices connected at any given time). I've had it running like this on the last 3 modems without issue, so why would that matter? To humor him I did run it on just one computer for a day - didn't make a damn difference, I was still dropped all the time.

I have a spare actiontec modem here and I'm seriously considering reconnecting it in light of what's going on here, but I want to be sure that all the steps have been taken that should be. For the record, I'm within walking distance of my local CO. I could get up and walk outside and be at the CO in 5 minutes flat at a normal pace.

FTTN Upgrade Location Selection Criteria?

Does anyone know what criteria Qwest is using to select FTTN locations?

Do they pick an entire city and do the whole thing?

Do they look at RT utilization and upgrade the empty ones hoping to get more take-up, or upgrade the ones at full capacity and hope existing customers upgrade?

Is Qwest still super-secretive about upgrade plans or is there some way to find out timelines and such?

Verizon FiOS not available in Eastern WA

If that service was allowed [so much for true capitalism and competition of services, especially amongst Telcos] I'd drop Qwest without hesitation.

Instead, I've got nice performance for consumer, but what one can do for small business with FiOS Qwest can't touch from the home.

Advice needed: Switching to Naked DSL

I recently discovered that there's such a thing as Naked DSL. I'm in MN and our two broadband options are bad and worse: Qwest or Comcast (which is worst varies from day to day).

I've been really happy with DSL in that I can use a really nice local ISP, even though they are a bit more expensive. Qwest screws up about once every two years and I loose my DSL for a week or so, but for the most part, it's been OK.

A few years ago we went down to a basic local line and use a calling card for long distance. I recently started researching Skype phones, thinking that might be a good idea, and then someone suggested I look into Naked DSL, and then switch to a VOIP service.

So...

1) Any advice on switching from DSL + phone with qwest to naked DSL? Is it actually relatively painless or will I have to explain this all to their outsourced support folks?

2) Is a Skype phone a viable option? It's not VOIP, but very tempting at $3 a month.

3) We want 911 service. Can we get that with a naked DSL line from Qwest, or is that something we HAVE to go with a VOIP provider to get?

4) Which VOIP providers should I consider/compare?

Our calling habits aren't much. Occassional out-of-state calls every week to the parents. A handful of incoming calls each day. Odd take out. We're pretty light phone users for the most part.

New Qwest customer, continual disconnects

I am new to Qwest and DSL. I have been a long time cable user. I made the jump because this is the first time I have ever had a *choice* in my ISP when Qwest ran the fiber down our street a month ago. So I'm excited for faster speeds at a lower cost. Anyway, let's get on to the troubles....

I set up the Qwest DSL last weekend. They sent me the ActionTec M1000. I could not get port forwarding to work on the unit so I configured it as a Transparent Bridge and set up PPPoE on my D-Link 624 router that I have been using for many years with three different cable companies. This worked flawlessly for 8 days. They yesterday it got into this continual disconnect/reconnect loop. Using www.whatismyip.com I determined I was getting a new IP once every 5-10 seconds. Anything with a persistent connection wouldn't work like IM clients. So I reset the M1000 to factory defaults, configured it as a transparent bridge again, and then rebooted my router and it worked fine until this afternoon. The same thing happened again. So just now I did the same reset, reconfigure, reboot cycle and I'm fine again. I fully anticipate I will be doing this again some time tomorrow.

Does anyone have any pointers to get me rolling in the right direction to solve this? I am new to DSL service so I don't know the first thing about debugging it.

I appreciate any assistance with this.

Cheers,
Scott
