Ping spikes on a 7mb/1.5mb DSL line

Hi all

So I have a problem that is very frustrating. I am a gamer, and I currently play wow and get about 150ms-250ms latency, but consistent and more than good enough to play. Very recently, within the last few days, I have been getting obvious and very annoying ping spikes while playing. I noticed this and did various speed test, ping tests, etc., etc, in attempts to find the problem, but I am no techie and haven't been able to find the problem. I have called Qwest, and their help on this issue has been worthless to non-existent. They ask me to repeatedly do speed tests and then they check and say over and over that everything on their end is fine. I have used network-tools.net to check my pings and I definitely am getting spikes, and they claim no knowledge of these spikes nor any help to fix it.

So, I am wondering if anyone can give me some advice. I realize that In order to receive some help, I need to post all the various data about my connection, but at this point I am even unfamiliar as how to do that. I will note one thing that is bizarre. When I ping test in the DOS command prompt to my gateway, the ping ALWAYS timesout and claims 100% packet loss.

Please, if Anyone can help I would be so appreciative. I will follow whatever instructions posted to get the data of my connections.

Thanks

Average loop stats for 3 Megabit speeds

I currently have the 1.5Mb service. It has been great, but I am going on 5 years with no speed improvements available. I believe I am connected directly to the CO, but am not sure. To qualify for the 3 Megabit package what is the max loop length? I know there are many more factors than that, but I am just curious.
Currently my SNR is 33 and my local attenuation is 28 and my remote attenuation is 19, but I am unsure of my loop length. Speaking to a local qwest tech in the area he thinks my neighborhood should qualify for the 3Mb speeds, but it needs to be tested and then updated in the database. I know there are a lot of variables, but does anybody have similar line stats with 3+Mb speeds?
Thanks.

Qwest DSL modem recommendation, *with a twist*

I live in southern CO, and have Qwest DSL. I have the ActionTec GT701-WG modem, and am more-or-less happy with it. Up until recently, however.

Up until recently, I was hosting a number of servers on my home machine, including DNS, postfix, and apache, and all was working well. Well, "well" in that my workarounds for a couple issues worked well. The main issue was that I was not able to talk to my servers using my (static) public IP address, only the local LAN address. To combat having to use raw IP addresses, say for things like my mail account, I implemented BIND "views" so that requests from the LAN addresses got one answer (the local IP address) and all other requests got another (the static public IP). Worked flawlessly that way for years.

Well, I've recently had necessity to move some of my hosting to Dreamhost, which required me passing DNS functionality to them. However, there is no equivalent to BIND "views" that I can take advantage of now. But, I still host some services (like apache) on my home machine, including some virtual domains and subdomains.

Some of these virtual domains are now inaccessible to me on my LAN, because I cannot access them using the public IP address. I'm told by those more in the know than I that this is because "I suspect your router doesn't do that forwarding from inside your NAT", where "that forwarding" is the port forwarding I've set up on the ActionTec so that, for example, port 80 is routed to my WWW server machine.

I can get to my main web site by virtue of the fact that I've created an alias to "www.mydomain.com" that resolves to the local address. However, this is not feasible for all my virtual domains and subdomains.

So, all this long-winded description to ask: "Is there an alternate DSL modem/router that I can use for my Qwest DSL service that *does* do the correct port forwarding for requests from machines inside the NAT?"

Qwest CO upgrades in Boise, Idaho

Anyone privvy to when the CO's are getting upgraded in Boise boundary areas for 20Mbps service?

My co is less than 400 yards away yet I cna only get 5mbps DSL. I heard a rumor that it was scheduled for a "capacity upgrade" at the end of November but I can't get anyone to confirm it for me.

I think Qwest is blocking YOUTUBE

I'm having issues with YouTube videos not loading up at all and indefinitely stuck at the loading indicator going around and around.

Tried IE and FF, on two different computers with the same result. I rebooted the DSL modem and it allowed me to actually load some videos, but not all.

Does anyone know if YouTube is having issue in itself, or is it Qwest, or is there something specific to Qwest-YouTube? If so, please shout-out here, and if you don't mind, please share your location.

Update:
The issue only started recently. Connecting to a wireless access point other than my own resolves the issue, as does using Youtubeproxy.org

On my Qwest, it stalls at "Waiting for s.ytimg.com"

So, Qwest may not be specifically blocking the service, but the CSRs couldn't figure out the problem, they type like they're talking on an instant messenger between teens and generally, for what I pay, the quality of service fails to meet my expectations. That's the "Spirit of Service" there.

Extreme Qwest latency/low downspeed

Did the following speed test:

Line Quality test:
http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2580104

This is the "information" from my router of our connection speed.

 Downstream Upstream
Max Allowed Speed (kbps) 7168 896
SN Margin (dB) 12.00 12.00
Line Attenuation (dB) 34.00 18.50
CRC Errors 0 0

Obviously the 700k download is the reason I even started the test.
Connecting to WoW from Socorro, NM to their boston datacenter (12.130.0.174, 12.130.0.170 according to the datacenter info), I'm getting >700 ping, with frequent disconnects during boss battles. I tested the NJ server, due to it's proximity to boston, but the other speedtests come up with similar downspeeds. Is it safe to assume that this is a problem with my ISP, rather than some sort of outage between me and the NE corner of the nation? Do my SNM/LA look ok? What's the best course of action in this scenario?

Email problem

I've been with Qwest DSL since June and am happy to say that so far it's been a good run but today I've started to have problems connecting my mail program, TheBat, to my q.com address. I have not changed anything and earlier today it was working fine but now all I get is the following message from my mail program when trying to connect:

TLS handshake failure. An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA, Sammy

SpeedStream 5200 - Frontiernet locked - unlock for Qwest?

Hello,
I have a Speedstream 5200 060-E242-A28 modem/router given to me. Used to work when I had NorthStar Access DSL, but is currently locked to PPPoA settings/firmware for Frontiernet. These settings apparently worked with Northstar, but aren't compatible with Qwest in my area using MSN ISP (requires PPPoE).

I'd like to re-flash with the appropriate firmware so I can configure this router to work using PPPoE.

I've found a lot of information in the Bell Canada forums, but still haven't found information relevant to US/Qwest.

Any help is appreciated!
Thank you,
Jeremy
