Success story--finally. Just hope it lasts

I've been having a problem with my DSL for the past several months after almost a year of good service. I'm in a rural area connected at 640/256 and that's the best we can get out here.

For a couple of months now, my DSL has been very unstable, mostly low speeds in the 128 to 224 range and off line intermittently almost 50% of the time. Noise margins were varying between 0 and 12 most of the time. I've had 3 technicians out to the house in the last month and each time they told me there was a problem with their lines but they never did anything about it.

I finally got the phone number of the local Qwest network supervisor in our area (the DSL techs work for him) and called him and told him of my problems and frustration with Qwest services.

He followed through with what he promised and he and another tech came out to my area last Tuesday (I wasn't home at the time) to investigate the problem. Although they didn't leave word about what they did, since Tuesday morning, my system has went from off line or very low speeds to solid at 640/256 with no down time and a noise margin stable at around 14 since then. It's been solid now for almost 4 days. I guess I'm lucky I was able to get a supervisor involved otherwise I'd still be up a creek.

I was later told that there is fiber cable laid along the highway where my rural road outlets and they may install "fiber to the node" at our road in 6 months or so. With that, it would eliminate almost 80% of the copper wire between the central office and my home. That should at least allow me to get the advertised speed of 1.5.

net going out frequently

Any time of the day usually after 3pm the net will go out and DSL light will blink. It has been more frequently last couple days. Person I talked to said it was fine then but they'll monitor the connection for 7 days. I doubt they really will monitor it. technician has come out and said he installed filters for the box outside so we don't need to use filters. I only have 1 phone plugged in the wall. I am considering switching to cox.

Opinions on best modem to replace a GT701

I am a 1.5 Qwest customer in the salt lake city, utah area. Im right on the edge of getting 1.5 service so im used to rebooting my Actiontec Gt-701 pretty often. Not much I can do as my area is a old network as told my Qwest. Even after I reboot and repower the modem I get
SNR Margin (Downstream/Upstream): 7/6
Attenuation (Downstream/Upstream): 63/31

Anyways lately my Actiontec is constantly losing sync and it seems to be temperature related. I figured I would just replace it with a new modem but what is the best modem to replace it with? I bridge it to a linksys router so I dont care at all about router functions.

Is the M1000 any better at keeping sync or can anyone recommend any other modems? Thanks!!

Is Qwest throttling?

I have been having problems with my downloads as have others. I googled Qwest throttling and came up with a post from the Qwest forums(included below). In the chat trancript, the tech states that they do indeed throttle the platinum connections and I have read other posts here where Qwest techs have stated that they do. So, Qwest officialy throttles downloads now? This kinda sucks as I have stayed with Qwest because they didnt throttle bandwidth. Throughts opinions?

 https://forums.qwest.com/qwbb/board/message?board.id=other&thread.id=850

"----------------------
Me: I chose minneapolis. I got 0.969 Mbps down and 0.540 Mbps up. FYI, during the mornings I usually can get something around 4.400 Mbps down.
Him: Please be aware that your circuit is UP TO, which means we don't guarantee any speed at any time. 1mb, I will agree, is slightly slower than a single download (we truncate data flow between 1.5 and 3mb on busy trunks...therefore you will rairely get a true 5mb download speed for a single file).
Me: It concerns me that speed is throttled down to 1.5 mbs on busy trunks. I would expect capacity to be expanded so throttling wasn't necessary..
Him: Unfortunately that's not the case. The 3, 5 and 7mb circuits are bandwidth circuits...not speed circuits. We do indeed throttle downloads to around 1.5mb
Him: I'm sorry.
Me: Well, that helps explain somethings, however, up until a few weeks ago primetime speeds were very good. Now they are not. Downloading a file at 30kBs is unacceptable.
Him: I would be happy to send out a tech for you...but I'll be honest. The circuit is fine from our end.
Me: I agree, my circuit is fine. The problem is congestion or throttling on your network.

My adventures with Qwest

In the last week of May, I decided to switch from Comcast to Qwest dsl. This is my adventure so far.

Let me first say that I opted to keep Comcast (but not let them know about it) until the dsl stabilizes. I'm glad I did.

After calling in to Qwest sales and ordering the dsl, they put me in the system and said they'd call back. Afaik, everything was good to go for May 28th. After a couple days (before the 28th), I called them to ask how it was coming along. The person I reached looked at my new install information and went through some gyrations to get the system to give me dsl asap. This apparently moved the installation date to June 2nd. Seems my local fiber to dsl gateway was full and they needed to wait for somebody to cancel and I was in luck because one was pending. They charged me for two things, one as some sort of deposit that I'd get back after a year of paying my bill on time and another as an advance for the first month of service. About $140 total.

I was also required to talk to their verification department and submit documents to prove I was who I said. I had expected this as I'm in an apartment in a poor part of town. First, the person I was supposed to talk to (Michelle) was on vacation (Memorial Day weekend, I think). Then they said in the meantime to fax in a copy of my drivers license, social security card and a piece of mail with my address. I did that (via a free online fax service) and after a few days got to talk with Michelle.

About the only positive thing I can say about Michelle is that she did her job as far as I can tell. She sounded like she was either suffering from a cold or was sick of her job. She told me that my ID & SS fax had come in to light and that the piece of mail wasn't acceptable, that it had to be a copy of my apartment lease agreement. For some reason it always took her the entire day to process everything so that every step took a day. This means it took about an hour of effort total on my part to get the docs faxed, corrected, and faxed again but took about three days for her to process it. At least I restrained myself from going off on her as I knew she would simply make things more difficult.

So after that was done, I was transfered back to sales and they said I was good to go, just wait until about 5pm on June 2nd and get plugged in.

June 2nd arrived, I plugged in, and nothing. As far as I could tell the modem wasn't seeing a signal. Called tech support and they said they were having problems with the install but were still working on it. The next day, there still wasn't a signal. Called tech support again and they sent out a tech for the 4th. It was a 8am-Noon slot and the tech called at 11:45 saying he'd be there in 15 minutes but arrived at about 12:20. Apparently it was a loose/unconnected wire in the junction box so the actual visit only took 20 minutes.

And it worked. Upload is about twice as fast as Comcast and bittorent spends most of it's time uploading when with Comcast it would spend most of it time idle. (I'm guessing that this is due to Comcasts filtering technique.)

Fast forward a couple weeks. I get a call in the late morning today (June 9th) telling me that they can hook up the dsl now. I tell them that it's already hooked up and working fine tyvm. They respond that they'll have to look into it. (Ominous now that I think about it.) Later that afternoon, I'm playing some games and at about 4pm, the connection dies. I reboot the modem, it sees the dsl but won't log me in. I call up tech support and as far as they can tell I'm on queue for new service scheduled for the 12th. The tech messes around a bit in the files without luck and eventually transfers me to the "business office". The guy I get there goes through the same motions (but apparently on a different database) and says he can't find any evidence of previous service at my address. Even the tech support call for the 4th apparently isn't there anymore.

So that's where I stand currently. Already wired up but no service currently. I'm gonna call Qwest tomorrow and see if I can't get some decent answers, possibly some account credit, and verify that they at least have record of the payments I've made so far. Maybe I can convince them to turn it on early or something.

If you made it this far, thanks for at least skimming my rant.

QWest 12 and 20Mbps service upload speed?

Can anybody tell me what QWest's upload speeds are for the 12Mpbs and the 20Mbps download options (fiber optic)? I have found that I can get this service now and need to deterine whether I should pressure Comcast for a speed boost or to just go ahead and sign up for QWest.

Thanks!

SNR deteriorates, discon main phone line fixes temporarily??

This symptom seems surpassingly strange to me. I'm hoping it means something to someone.

My SNR deteriorates of 8-24 hours. When it hits 0, I start to accumulate errors, and the connection drops out. I have a DSL splitter and a dedicated computer line.

When it drops out I can fix it by disconnecting the raw phone line at the NID or the splitter (no difference). 10 seconds will do it, although a few minutes works better. The connection reestablishes with a 10-15 SNR.

Then it slowly deteriorates. The pattern is absolutely reproducible, although the "good" time interval is somewhat variable.

Does this mean anything to anyone?
