Need a bit of help with internet speeds

Alright. I've been suffering with Verizon DSL for quite some time now. It originally started off well, if I remember right, about a year ago. 80 KB/S Downloads at best, kept me happy then even though it seemed a bit slower than what I should be getting. Unfortunately, it also liked to disconnect whenever someone called, or whenever a storm hit. When a storm caused it to go down, Verizon had to fix it themselves. That's when the problems started. The downloads speeds went down exponentially, although it became more stable and disconnected way less. I've tried many, many things to increase the speeds that both my modem and various speed tests say I should be getting. The modem I'm using right now is a Westell 6100, alongside a router, a Linksys WRT300N. If anyone can help me with my problem, it would be greatly appreciated. Otherwise, I'm heavily considering switching to Comcast, which seems a lot more appealing right now.

Home Server on Verizon Residential DSL?

I have a question for you guys. First, let me preface my question with the following statement: I am NOT talking about a web server, but a home server for files and media (ie. FreeNAS or Windows Home Server.) I have looked both in the dslreports forums and at Verizon's website and I still can't find an answer to my question. Can you use a server of this type on residential Verizon DSL service, or do I need to upgrade to a Business account?

Thank you for your help!

Is this a Verizon DSL connection?

Hi guys, I'm no stranger to this site - I used it a lot when I first got broadband at home. Afaik u guy's are the internet's experts on broadband, so I've come to ask for your help.

After completing two years at a community college I've moved to a university. Unfortunately they are renovating many dorm buildings and upperclassmen have to live off-campus this year. So I share an apartment with a friend I went to high school with. When we first went to look at the apartments the guy told us there was gigabits of bandwidth (can't remember how many he said the first time) being shared through the building of about fifty apartments. Well the internet is slow as hell and I can't think of any possible way for a handful of college kids to eat gigabits of bandwidth (p2p apps don't work so that's not it).

I talked to him today and he still maintains I am the only one having a problem and says that he has "108 gigabits" going to the building. Man, that's over 2 gigabits per apartment! Typically my speedtests are a few hundred kilobits down and ten or so kilobits up. It's like dial-up. I had a feeling from the beginning he is shady and has a dsl connection shared fifty ways and that is why it's so slow.

Well, I've done a whois report with the great tools on this site and as far as I can tell it seems it is a verizon DSL connection. The results of the report follow. Am I way off base or right on the money?

[connectivity] distance solution

Today I have discovered the new RT up in town. Sadly I am .8 miles away from it. :( The last town to get dsl was covered throughout the whole town. Is Verizon possibly going to be placing other dsl technology type things on telephone poles or something to make the dsl signal reach everyone? Theres about 17 other people on my street that will be missing out on the only high speed internet, not to mention the 100s of other combined people on other streets which dsl won't be reaching.(and theres only 800 people in my town, so thats alot of potential customers verizon is missing out on) Verizon wouldn't just put a dslam in the middle of town and say its available throughout the town would they?

If they dont do anything about it is there any possible way to get verizon dsl to reach me? maybe a modem down the street and a wireless thing or some radio, or a very long ethernet cable? I'll do anything to get dsl.

Im going to attach an article (if it works) that says how dsl is available throughout the first town to get service. Notice this in the attachment; "Starting today, Verizon High Speed Internet Service is being offered throughout Florida,"

[connectivity] connection problem/phone/filters

i just subscribed to verizon dsl last week and got my installation kit yesterday. i got to the part where it checks my connection and it wont connect. the dsl light is blinking and i was told it should not be blinking but be steady. i have filters on all the phones except for one which i cannot put a filter on because it is a rotary phone that was installed in the house in the 60's and is wired directly into the phone itself, plus there is a phone line that runs from my sattelite reciever directly to the phone box outside. what i am wondering is would either of these things be my problem, and if so what should i do about it, and if its not the problem what do i need to do?

Slow/lossy downlink - Philadelphia, PA - sidelinecast

Friends:

just about had it with verizon but thought I'd try here before disconnecting. I'm in West Philadelphia.

for the past fourteen days, I've had upload speeds of between 0 and 50kbps. My download speeds are fine, generally around 2.8. (I have the 3/768 plan).

It's not my computer (tried all three in the house with the same result), it's not the modem (apparently the primary solution is to send a new modem, and I now have three), it's not the house (a tech came and confirmed the house lines are clear).

I've had multiple "open-tickets" that mysteriously close. The case was assigned to the chronic division but then they apparently declared everything fine.

Today's line test: http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2418954

Yesterday's line test: http://www.dslreports.com/linequality/nil/2418527

If it would be helpful, I can post speed tests and line tests every day from the past two weeks. Not sure if it's relevant, but my neighbor has a very similar problem.

Any thoughts, advice, suggestions would be most appreciated.

THANKS !!!
MC

[connectivity] My DSL disconnects when using the telephone.

My DSL connection is usually pretty reliable, except for when someone uses the telephone. It doesn't seem to matter if we are calling out or if someone is calling us. The internet connection will disconnect and I have to reset my modem in order to get it to reconnect. Sometimes if I am not online it will reconnect on its own a few minutes later, sometimes not. I do not use a router.

Anyone else have this problem?

Verizon playing games with my life... any help?

I am not a Verizon customer. But Verizon has done me wrong. I am a customer of Cavtel. Before I go on let me also mention that I am a cancer and heart patient. I recently moved. I intentionally kept my service active with Cavtel and put a move order in for my new address. I also got a letter from my doctor expressing my dire need to have phone service restored ASAP. This was by request of Cavtel. I did everything by the book. Today was supposed to be my service move date. I had a feeling around 3:30pm eastern today that something wasn't right. I live only a couple of blocks from the CO. I found out today from Cavtel that my order is on hold because Verizon took my spot and gave it to one of their customers and now claims there is no room for me. How can they just steal my spot like that? I never cancelled my service with Cavtel. I am still an active customer with nowhere to be connected because I got pushed off the servers by Verizon. They are really playing games with my life, and don't seem to be the least bit concerned. I can't believe that not only did they refuse to expedite my service move order, but they stole my spot and gave it to someone else. Thanks Verizon, you guys are really a bunch of asses.
