[speed/latency] difference in single download and multiple downl

I have verizon dsl 3M since 2005 or 6, and since the day one of service, my (single file) download speed never exceeded 180k, however when I download multiple files at the same time, the total speed sums up to be anywhere between 250 to 280k. Could somebody with expertise in this regard explain this phenomenon, which of course is not desirable? any remedy? TIA

Does Verizon really care anymore?

I think I am one of many Verizon customers who are now having the problem of their DSL speed slowing down each evening (I‘m paying for 3.0 MB/sec and am getting readings below 1.0 after 8 pm). I’ve had technicians out to my house twice now and all they can say is that additional equipment must be installed at their central station to solve the problem, but the Verizon decision makers are unwilling to do it. FiOS is not available in my area (Northridge, CA) and will not be for years.

I intend to drop Verizon DSL service shortly because of this, but what is most frustrating to me is the daily deluge of TV commercials advertising FiOS service that must cost Verizon millions, but yet they refuse to install the needed equipment at their central station that would cost near to nothing compared to what they’re paying for their TV time every day. It seems to show they just don’t give a rip anymore about DSL customers anymore, and us plain DSL clients no longer matter.

[modem/router] Unable to browse some sites with bridged linksys

I am having a problem I cannot seem to solve. I have a Linksys WRT55AG bridged to a Westell 6100G. First, my connection appears to be painfully slow. Second, I am unable to browse many sites. Examples include Yahoo!, Facebook, banking sites and in particular sites which require login information such as email and even verizon.com.

I can successfully ping many of these sites (tried recently with auth.verizon.com) but cannot seem to resolve this issue.

I am a little savvy, but could really use some direction here before I lose what is left of my hair.

Thanks.

2 quick "newbie" questions about DSL

With a week until Verizon activates my DSL service, I thought I'd ask a few quick questions to kill the time.

1. My next door neighbor Paul leases two T1 lines for a combined speed of 3 mbps and pays a little over $1,000 a month to run a few dozen servers from his basement. He said the servers combined with the Blu-Ray movies and TV shows he downloads nonstop usually add up to 3-5+ terabytes of downloads per month.

If he continues to do this with DSL, will it effect my speed at all? Will Verizon allow a single user to abuse this much bandwidth?

2. I've heard that DSL slows down considerably when you answer the phone. Is this true?

Need help setting up Westell 6100G modem...

Hi all,

I have been having Verizon DSL in the Los Angeles area for about 4 years. The DSL modem is an old Westell Wirespeed. It has been working fine in the last 4 years, may be except a few times when the line had problem.

Last week, the line became flaky again and they just sent me a new Westell 6100G and I'd appreciate any help you could give.

- I have a Netgear wired/wireless router connected to my old modem and it works fine with my old modem. My Verizon DSL doesn't require log in with username/password. I didn't have to do any setup with my old modem. I just plugged it in and it worked. My router uses 192.168.0.1 subnet (does it matter?)

- when I replaced my old modem with the new 6100G in its place, I had no connection. The INTERNET light was red. What is this INTERNET light? (my old modem has 3 LEDs: POWER, READY (when connected to the wall) and ETHERNET (when connected to router))

- with the new modem, when I connected my computer directly to the modem, my computer was assignment an IP of 192.168.1.42. The INTERNET light was RED.

- I connected to 192.168.1.1 and logged in with admin/password and got to the menus but I am not sure what I need to change? I already disabled the "Walled Garden" as suggested here.

- What exactly do the 3 LED lights mean? (DSL/DATA/INTERNET)

- I would appreciate your comments/helps/suggestions.
Thank you very much.

[trouble] Horrible speed at new location - Verizon DSL

So I called Verizon for a move order, I thought everything will go very smoothly but the speed is horrible at my new apartment. It's supposed to be a 3.0 Mbps connection, but I'm getting this!

Transceiver Revision: 01.00.09.00
Vendor ID Code: 4
Line Mode: G.DMT Mode
Data Path: Interleaved
Transceiver Information Down Stream Path Up Stream Path
DSL Speed (Kbits/Sec) 224 320
Margin (dB) 8.5 11.0
Line Attenuation (dB) 54.0 31.5
Transmit Power (dBm) 12.2 10.9

The modem is plugged directly into the network interface device. And before today, I had to call Verizon tech support 3 times and pressure them to dispatch a technician because I wasn't even getting any signals at all. What's the deal with this speed?

System slow tonight?

It seems my desktop and notebook are both very slow tonight trying to view pages.
Anyone else having similar problem? I'm in Queens, NY.
I am even find it hard to get into SpeakEasy.
My DSL is 768kb, but as I said, everything is loading very slowly.
Could it just be a slowdown on the Internet. I did get through to the SpeakEasy before and it was showing about 300kb.
It states "Preparing download test" and then it just sticks there for a while and then slowly shows 227 kbps! Upload shows 273 kbps.
Does anyone know what is going on?

[modem/router] access modem menus from router?

HI all,

I just got a new Westell 6100G to replace an old Westell Wirespeed modem. By following the FAQ here, I was able to set it to 'bridge' and put it between the wall jack and my Netgear WGR614 router and it worked. However, I couldn't access the modem's menus at 192.168.1.1 to get the status.

My Netgear was set to DHCP for LAN, subnet 192.168.0.x and the modem's ip is 192.168.1.1 (DHCP disabled).

I read the link http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r17864504-modemrouter-how-to-access-cp-through-router of using 2 eNet cables to connect the modem to the router in order to access the modem menus. But what I don't understand is why do I need to do this? Shouldn't the netgear forward all packets that are not for its subnet (192.168.0.x) to the WAN side and therefore reaching the modem (at 192.168.1.1)?

(if I connect the modem directly to my computer using Enet, then set my computer to 192.168.1.2, I was able to connect to the modem.)

Thanks.

[policy and politics] What would it take? (20610 ft)

So Verizon is launching DSL in my area at the end of the month or so. As such, I figured I'd call in and get an MLT to see how ar my address is from the CO. The result: 20,610 feet, so it would take RE-ADSL or an AdrenaLine booster to get service out to me. Unfortunately for me, Verizon does neither of these things so I'm stuck, oddly enough, about 400 feet further away from DSL than I am from cable.

So my question is, is there the slightest possibility that Verizon might put up a remote near me, and if so would there be a way to accelerate this? I'm next to a widely-spaced subdivision that currently can't get wireline internet beyond dialup (T1s don't count) but would be fully covered, I'm pretty sure, if Verizon put a RT at the subdivision entrance. Which would also make my day because I'd be close enough to run Cat5 to the RT and still get good service, let alone xDSL. :p

Everyone in the subdivision is well-of, and I'm 99% sure 100% of them would switch from their current wireless or satellite service if they coulld get DSL. But I know RTs are expensive and to my knowledge Verizon doesn't have any in my area, though the subdivision is right off US 290 so infrasturcutre probably isn't a huge issue.

Any ideas on what to do in my situation? I've thought about setting up a wireless link to a friend's house that can get cable...provided I get a pole mount above the ridge behind their house it's a straight short shot to my place. But I'd rally rather have the CPE at my plac ethan theirs...

[availability] DSL Availability

I live in the Souther Tier of Western NY.

I've been trying to get Verizon DSL for the last 4 years or more and I keep hearing the same story. I am roughly 1/2 mile too far from the hub/base. But I was talking to my neighbor who lives past me (farther from town by another few hundred yards) who tells me he has it. He showed me the box.

I called Verizon and they tell me they will send a box out to see if it will work. Then 24 hours later I get an email that their engineers determined it won't work so the order was canceled.

Is there any way I can get service? I am hoping to start school in January and my Wild Blue is unreliable when snow flies. At this point I would be willing to fork over $500 or $1000 for a repeater or something if that is what's necessary but when I call they refuse and say there is nothing I can do.

I thought this was a service? I've never heard of a company refusing a customer willing to pay for an upgrade that will make them more money. Go figure...
