Smoker's Applecare warranties may not be worth anything

http://consumerist.com/5408885/smoking-near-apple-computers-creates-biohazard-voids-warranty
Did you know, that smoking isn't good for your computer, either? It's true, at least according to Apple. Two readers in different parts of the country claim that their Applecare warranties were voided due to secondhand smoke. Both readers appealed their cases up to the office of God Steve Jobs himself. Both lost.

Apple store called and informed me that due to the computer having been used in a house where there was smoking, that has voided the warranty and they refuse to work on the machine, due to "health risks of second hand smoke".

They informed me that his computer can't be worked on because it's contaminated.

When I asked for an explanation, she said he's a smoker and it's contaminated with cigarette smoke which they consider a bio-hazard! I checked my Applecare warranty and it says nothing about not honoring warranties if the owner is a smoker. The Applecare representative said they defer to the technician and my son's computer cannot be fixed at any Apple Service Center due to being listed a bio-hazard.

Dena [from Jobs' office] did advise me that nicotine is on OSHA's list of hazardous substances and Apple would not require an employee to repair anything deemed hazardous to their health.

Dena called me earlier this week to deliver the "bad news." She said that the computer is beyond economical repair due to tar from cigarette smoke! She said the hard drive is about to fail, the optical drive has failed and it isn't feasible to repair the computer under the warranty. This computer is less than 2 years old! I asked why my warranty didn't cover the repair and was told it's an OSHA violation.Smoke damage can cause problems. But it should be mentioned in the warranty if they aren't going to repair computers damaged by smoke contamination from smokers.

2.5" USB/FW/eSATA enclosure

I've got a spare 250GB 2.5" laptop drive, and I'm looking to get a more versatile enclosure to put it in, something that would have a triple interface, USB/FW & eSATA, that would also be bootable from all interfaces on a Mac. I have some older USB/FW enclosures that will not boot from the FW port, but will boot from the USB port, so I'm guessing its something with the bridge chip inside.

I've tried to find some, but most are either USB/FW or USB/eSATA but not all three interfaces.

Any recommendations?

Magic Mouse & Keyboard

Well, Friday morning I knocked over a completely full mug of steaming coffee all over my keyboard and mouse.

The keyboard was dead in about 40 seconds..and the mouse held on just a bit longer. So, I headed that night to my local Apple store and picked up the "Magic Mouse" and the new(er) wireless keyboard.

This keyboard is SO damn small..i'm still trying to align my hands properly...heh. And, not sure if i'll miss the # keypad yet or not.

However, this Magic Mouse is amazing. The scroll feature, the 2-finger swipe page-back feature, right-click ability...after just a day of using it the $70 was a great buy.

Anyone else out there enjoying this new mouse (I'm sure there are since from what I read they come standard now with a new Mac).

Multiple Payment methods @ Apple store and online???

Does apple store online / retail location allow multiple payment methods. Sadly I am affected due to this lowsy economy to not have high enough credit limits on my Credit cards, however i am financially capable for the purchase.

So cash + cc1+cc2+cc3 acceptable or do they frown on it.

Banks are ridiculous. They give you as many CC's as u want just absurdly low limits.

Why no touchscreen computing by Apple Yet??

Any Ideas?? I mean they perfected it on the iPhone, and although HP has been doing it (on windows computers) for years before the iPhone came out, why is Apple still not putting it in their computers??

Any ideas??? Just seems odd to me, especially with that nice HUGE new iMac glass surface that can be easily cleaned with a microfiber cloth...

Bizarre purple artifacts

Somewhere along the line my MBP started occasionally showing these odd purple artifacts - mostly in Safari, but I've caught it happening in other apps as well. I also sometimes see distortion of content in a window as shown below. Anything that causes a window redraw gets rid of the distortion and/or artifacts.

I still have AC, but I'll be damned if I can make this thing do this on demand. I'm hoping this isn't what a GPU that's run too hot for too long looks like before it craps out.

Anyone seen something like this?

[OS X] F!@#$% SNOW LEOPARD INSTALLER

F!@#$% Snow Leopard Installer just wiped out my hard drive on my mini.

I wanted to install a backup copy of SL on a USB drive. I put in the Retail DVD, SL installer showed up, I made sure 100% that I selected the empty disk "Untitled" and not my internal drive. I doublechecked. It did not ask ANYTHING about overwriting any existing disks or data.

The install went on its merry way. It reboots, I find the internal drive got wiped and the SL installer went on the internal drive and the external USB remains empty.

HOW THE F!@# DID THIS HAPPEN?

I didn't have much on it, since it's pretty much used as a HTPC, but my entire Plex Media Center was wiped out along with its custom settings and library corrections.

[Snow] inserted disc, can't view SL install window

1st generation Core Duo Macbook, 2GB memory, running 10.5.8

After sliding the Snow Leopard disc in I hear routine faint drive noises, but within a minute the disc ejects itself. At no time are any welcome or install options windows visible.

I'd installed Photoshop Elements 8 yesterday, so I doubt it's a defective Super Drive.

Any ideas on what might be the cause of this?

Thanks in advance.
