[OS X] iMac hard drive failure :(

Pucharsed my 24" iMac in early 2008. Yesterday I had a complete hard drive failure. Things started going south Wed night so I ran the disk utility and did a repair. Said all was well. I got up the next morning and things started locking up and well.... the rest is history.

Made an appt with the Genius guys, packed up the darn iMac and lugged it to the store. (sheesh, it was HEAVY, so I had to use one of those luggage cart thingies - definitely not a pack and carry item!)

They confirmed hard drive failure. The good news is they have the part and can fix it. The bad news is I have to wait a couple of days.

So for now, using the macbook.

The real question I have here is is this normal for a disc to fail on an iMac after only 1 year of use? Seems a bit extreme to me. I'm lucky because I'm a nut for redundancy and have everything backed up on an external hard drive using Time Machine and as well as another external hard drive for critical files. BUT, the failure of such a new hard drive seems ridiculous. Thoughts?

Apple TV version 2.4 chapter skip.

I was getting annoyed with the fact that after the 2.4 upgrade chapter skip seemed to be gone with only FF working. Discovered today hitting the down button on the remote will reveal the progress bar and make the FF skip through the chapters as marked....

the info for those looking for a fix to this new improvement.

[rant] Apple Care Warranty (Store)

I have a 24" c2c Imac that the video is failing. It will get a pixelated line or square box all the way across the screen. When I googled this, it seems to be a problem with the Nvidia graphics card heating up or just plain wore out. No big deal, I have warranty till 2010. I took it to the Apple store to be repaired and two days later they called and said that they can not complete the work on it due to cigarette smoke and nicotine build up in it. I was told that it was a hazard to the tech's health. I kindly said ok and told them that I would come to pick it up. I called another store and told them the deal and they said that they would work on it and repair it with the Apple Care warranty. It's setting there now being repaired, or at least I hope so. I just dropped it off today. Have you ever heard of someone not repairing a computer due to smoke build up? I understand the risks of nicotine, but I read the warranty and found nothing of that issue except abuse and neglect. Does that mean anyone that smokes around their computer does not have a warranty? Thanks for letting me vent...

[iPhone] Kinda late, but oh well

A new in-house repeater system deployment (at my employer) has killed the Sprint signal inside the building. So, after two weeks of getting fed up with no reception, and a battery dying by the end of the day on my Blackberry Curve, I ETF'd the Sprint account, and got a 3GS 32GB.

I got it on opening day, but haven't had a chance to post about it here yet. :-)

I'm still trying to get down the black art of getting the battery to last a while (I'm getting better). All in all, I have 46 apps on it now, and have been trying a different set of case combos and whatever to get it to be to my liking. It got a good workout at the Taste of Chicago yesterday, and the past two days that the wife and I were on vacation there. (I love the GPS and Google Maps Metro instructions!)

There's a few pet peeves that I have about it, but hopefully someone will fix them eventually.

1) No background apps. Why oh why can't I let Pandora continue to stream in the background?
2) Differences between the other platform apps - i.e. FaceBook will sync your address book on the BlackBerry to your friends list, update the pictures in the phone book, etc. Also, FaceBook on Blackberry will let you pick the album where the mobile uploads go. The iPhone ones go directly into "Mobile Uploads."
3) I'd love to set the new mail, SMS, etc, sounds like you can with the ringtone. (That was the shortest crash course in GarageBand I've ever taken.)
4) Even with my Air Jacket on, Apple didn't leave enough leeway on the iPhone dock to put the airjacket'ed unit on the dock. So, I have one of those A1153 universal docks (I'm guessing the generation prior to the one that's out right now) and I put a larger dock adapter in it (for my 5.5G iPod) and I can dock the iPhone in it. Of course, the iPhone nicely prompts me that the A1153 wasn't made for that model iPhone, and asks me if I want to put on Airplane Mode. But it does charge it. (Maybe the folks that make the Air Jacket can make their own dock insert mold?)
5) No way to Bluetooth files on and off of the device? Does this thing just support audio Bluetooth?

So who's going to line up to pay $9.99/mo for turn-by-turn?

I just got an email from AT&T about their new Navigator software with voice control. It's $9.99 a month for turn-by-turn service.

Who's actually going to pay this when one gets similar functionality (without voice control) from the Google Maps application? I mean, wow.

Has anyone tried it? is it worth our while? What do others think?

I don't know if you'll get charged extra or not so use at your own risk. I don't have tethering officially enabled on my Rogers account and just used the defaults command, synced my iPhone and tethering works.

iPhone no-service and passcode locked after 3.0 update

I updated my iPhone and my wife's to 3.0 a little while ago (finally got around to it). Mine went perfect but something wrong happend with my wife's phone.

Her phone now has "no service" and I can't connect it to iTunes because iTunes say the phone is locked with a passcode. I can't unlock the passcode because the phone has no service. So - I'm totally stuck.

I've tried reading around but can not find a solution. I did run across something recommending that you turn off phone passcodes before upgrading. I had no idea.

Any thoughts? I can't see a way out of this.

[OT] RIP: Bellboy, Mac Specialist (2004-2009)

As yesterday was my last day I can now openly admit that I was an Apple employee for the last five years. A couple of people here knew this, but I kept it quiet since I didn't want any attention from Apple--perhaps it's not a secret here at all. It was a fun time and I'll miss it, but it's time to move on to other things.

I've done some cool stuff during my time at Apple:
--wondered around the Cupertino campus like a star struck fanboy
--stood face to face with Teh Steve and actually talked to him without getting fired
--worked four Macworlds and got to demo the new goodies at a few
--worked three keynotes--including the iPhone launch

...and of course I was allowed to participate in one of the best run retail operations in the world selling some amazing products.

Now I just need to figure out what I'll do with the gazillions of t-shirts I've acquired over the years. :D
