[iPhone] Do you group your apps, and if so, with what names?

I am in the process of grouping up 8 pages of apps on my new 4S. Some of the groupings are obvious, such as "music". What groupings do you use? Others are "Social" and "weather" and "Streaming" "photos"... How do you group them? What do you have in your special groups?

[iPhone] Oh Siri, where's the love?

So it's only been a few days I've had my 4S. I was introduced to Siri when my sister got hers months back. Siri didn't work well on her phone, she works better on my phone, but is it me or is it that Siri just isn't quite ready for real use, real prime time yet? It's like Apple is trying to do something AI before AI exists. Yes, they are probably using some fuzzy logic science, but, like today, I showed Siri to a friend on the bus. The bus is very noisy, needless to say, so Siri kept waiting after I was finished because she couldn't distinguse my voice from the others on the bus. I don't know how such a thing would work without good AI, anyways.

But even so, Siri is, well, at least, cute...

[iPhone] Remote erase

Long story short, we let go an employee and he has refused to turn in his company issued iPhone. We set up iCloud on it long time ago for backup, but it can also be used for remote erase I'm told.

Its not so much the phone that we care about, its an old iPhone 4, but more so the data on it that may contain company confidential stuff.

What I'm wondering, does anything get displayed on the phone during or after the phone has been remotely erased? Any messages? I searched around but can't find much info.

Thanks

Facebook may be buying map app Waze

quote:Is Facebook’s Zuckerberg Attempting Another Instagram in Acquisition Effort of Traffic App Waze?
MAY 9, 2013 AT 11:48 AM PT

As has been widely reported and according to sources we have confirmed it with, Facebook is indeed in serious talks to buy Waze, the social traffic application that helps drivers navigate the road with crowdsourced traffic information.
While no deal has been struck yet, these sources said, it looks as though the discussions are advanced and resemble the social networking giant’s lightning-fast purchase of Instagram a year ago.
The similarities do not stop there. The price is the same and is a mix of cash and stock, said sources. In addition, as Facebook has done with Instagram, Waze will be allowed to operate relatively independently within the company if the deal is struck.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently praised the purchase of Instagram, which has grown to more than 100 million users in a short time span. More importantly, it has been a critical perceptual part of Facebook’s effort to distinguish itself in the mobile space.
The news of the Waze acquisition interest by Facebook was first reported by Israel’s Calcalist....

Not that anyone asked me, but I always thought Apple should have bought Waze (in case anyone cares, I also think Apple should buy Netflix)

3rd generation Apple TV Issues

I have the Apple TV for watching MLB.TV and other streams. This is the first year that I went this way; I usually get the MLB EI package.

What I am seeing is the picture turning into "clouds" for 1 to 10 seconds. Sometimes the sound is OK and sometimes it stalls and drops out.

It appears to me that this might be a buffering issue. Signal strength is five solid bars.

I looked around the MLB.TV forum and they are saying it is an Apple issue; others say it is a MLB.TV issue.

Watching Netflix or other sources everything is perfect.

Does anyone see this on MLB.TV?

[OS X] OS X Mail.app vs. AT&T SMTP issues - Fixed?

re: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27617872-OS-X-OS-X-Mail-vs.-AT-T-SMTP-issues-

Holy hell, I think I solved this. If you're suffering, notice how 'Connection Doctor' logs Mail.app shouting 'quit' as soon as an AT&T/Yahoo server from the server pool (as offered from outbound.att.net or smtp.att.yahoo.com) replies with its actual hostname without, if I recall correctly, even an EHLO?

Well, smtp.mail.yahoo.com replies as "smtp.mail.yahoo.com". And I hope I don't jinx things, but after my mother went a year without SMTP service, SSL on port 465 with password login and the never-changed always-good-for-webmail credentials and all is working again. Finally. While outbound.att.net and smtp.mail.yahoo.com are still harfed with that machine.

A hint was that simply setting up mail on her iPad as a "Yahoo" account worked flawlessly on the same network. I banged my head against it rather than actually having the sense to sniff at what the iPad actually does, though, and made the lucky guess before I could kick myself for not thinking to try that.

(I hope the hostname thing is not a red herring. I'm still not sure if nameserver issues or the presence of a Netgear router/modem combo are contributors, but the issue didn't arise until long after all such was installed.)

I suspect Mail.app is being extra-paranoid about something DNS-wise, but heck if I've managed to suss out exactly what. Perhaps there's a fix in a later OS release, but since the replacement iMac for the last 'brown spots in backlight' issue now has a case of it that puts the original to shame [which cost us an emergency last-minute AppleCare purchase just to 'buy time' to get it serviced without a fight] I don't think I've gotten around to putting cash on the table for ML.

Hope this helps someone in the same boat and that it does not convince AT&T or Yahoo to break whatever 'works' about the vanilla Yahoo server (which has got to be load-balanced too, just in a less Apple-incompatible way?).

Can I make my own ringtone?

I don't want to buy a ringtone, but if I can make my own somehow, and figure out how to install it using the current iTunes and phone, I'd like to do so. I have a specific tune I want to do.

[iPhone] IPhone 5 battery stamina

My phone was charged up to 100% on Friday morning and I see it is at 63% this morning (4 days later). It has been turned on for perhaps 10 minutes total during this period; the rest of the time, it has been idle. So, it seems to be losing roughly 10% charge per day. Does this sound like the battery is OK?

The phone isn't even a month old (I purchased it on April 25); if I ended up with a substandard battery, I want to know so that I can get it exchanged.

Earlier this month, I ran the phone until the battery totally discharged and I then fully recharged it (Apple suggests doing this once per month), but perhaps it takes a few of these cycles in order to fully condition a new battery.

By the way, if it makes a difference, I have the AT&T version.

[rant] iMessage "just doesn't work"...it's useless!

Today I had two separate text conversations from my iPhone (both recipients were iPhone users).
In each case, their last reply didn't appear on my iPhone.
However, when I got home, the last reply was there, and only the last reply, not the rest of the conversation. So, I had to look back and forth between iPhone and laptop, using time stamps, to see what they were referring to.
Needless to say, on OS X Messages, all the remarks were out of order (all my comments were listed first, then all the other person's comments were listed).
For a company that used to snidely comment "it just works" (somehow implying superiority over their competitors), this app is a complete waste of time.
For the record, with respect to texting/messaging, all of my previous phones (they were not iPhone) "just worked"
Oh, by the way (or should I say "one more thing" like they do in the MacWorld presentations), the recent OS X update http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5612?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US stated "A fix for an issue in Messages that may cause messages to appear out of order after waking from sleep"...apparently didn't do the trick.
End of rant.

[iOS] Slider bar not working properly after a reboot

The slider bar on my iPad (3rd generation, up to date iOS) works perfectly, 100% of the time.
However, if I reboot the iPad, the first time I try to unlock it, the slider bar doesn't work. The screen times out before I can successfully slide it, usually it takes 10 swipes to get it to work.
While I can't say for sure, the failure rate is >80% of the time.
On my iPhone 4 (up to date), the same occurs with the PassLock (I don't lock the iPad only the iPhone). Similarly, the failure is the rule, not the exception.
As the same behavior is in place across devices, it rules out hardware.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
Thanks!
