Proof that DRM is bad, and renting music isn't a good idea!

http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/07/25/yahoo_musics_death_at_age_3_warns_of_drms_risk.html

At least if iTunes Music Store closed I could burn all my purchases to an audio CD at no extra charge and rip them back. And iTMS was the first large music store to sell digital DRM-free music, now if only the other labels would open up to Apple...

I did try and search for this in the forum with no luck. I'm looking for a good mpeg-4 to psp ripper. I use handbrake for DVDs but it doesn't do files already converted to mpeg-4.

Share your faves from the App Store

Ok. Today it sucks to be an Apple fan since they're showing off their MS colors by handling this week's releases pretty poorly. But I have to say that given the size of the bite they took this week (launching iPhone AND Mobile Me at the same time!), I think they're doing the best they can with what they were given. Anyone in an large IT shop can share some similar launch horror stories--I have a bunch that are worse than this.

So anyway, to take some of the negativity off of today's "festivities" I thought I'd ask of those that have updated their 1.0 (or 2.0) iPhones with some App Store goodies: What is/are your favorite one-or two-apps that you've PURCHASED (not talking free here folks)--to help out the ones that are not so willing to hit the buy buttons. If you want to share a free app, that's fine too, but I want this to help balance out the crap "reviews" that have eaten into the App Store in the last day or so.

I'd have to say that my two favorites since I've had some time to wade through all of the stuff that I've bought/downloaded are Motion-X Poker and Enigmo. I've found that they are both absolutely beautiful to look at and the animation on the poker game along with the functionality and design is just amazing. And Enigmo is making me bald from tearing my hair out.

Question about wireless hotspots

Remember my post about the two senior partners in my firm getting MacBook Airs? Ok, well they're both out of town and need internet access. They are going to be using Verizon Wireless Air Cards in the future, but for the time being, I advised one of them to try and find a free wireless hotspot i.e. Starbucks or something else. Question is once they are connected to that network, will there work be secured when they're connected to our Citrix server? Anytime I connect from home it says 128 bit secured. I know while there on the open network in the coffee shop that they're computer would be "hack-able", but what about the actual citrix connection? Would it still be secure?

[Beginner] BootROM error - replacable chip? (G4 laptop)

Complete MAC ignoramus here.

Want to know if the BIOS chip on the mainboard is swap-able or soldered. Anyone know or have advice on where to search for an answer? Will crack open the case if necessary but would rather not as I've no idea how serviceable/accessible things are.

BACKGROUND:
My neighbor's G4 laptop powers-on with a Boot ROM error which also offers a commandline "mac-boot" which loads a fullscreen GUI with a flashing "?" in the center. Using the Option++P+R+ key combo (whew!) gets another GUI with options to "cancel" or "" ('proceed', I presume) but delivering a touchpad-click on the arrow generates no acknowledgment. Oh, and sticking the OS-X installer disc #1 in for a repair console attempt resulted in the drive sticking in what sounds like a read-attempt loop and no way to eject the disc. Brilliant that.

OTHER QUESTIONS:
-- Is the bootROM error probably accurate
-- any mechanical way to remove the *#$^@! disc?
-- what have you had to pay for boot-ROM chips in Apple products?

Thanks for reading this long troubleshooting post.

iphone 2G and 2.0 software and slow response

Hi
So i have an older 2G iphone and the new 2.0 software. If i go to the new search contacts feature it hangs for 15-30 seconds without any response at all and i've noticed other performance hits, particularly in the camera which seems slow to launch and open the "diaphragm".

Anyone else seen this, in particular the contacts search issue.

[OT] Fry's in store Toast 9 $40 after upgrade MIR

http://shop3.frys.com/product/5544350

I noticed in the local Fry's ad that they're having an extra $20 off in additon to the online MIRs for a $40 final price for previous users of Roxio burning products. So if you were looking for Toast 9 fairly cheap and have a local Fry's you can pick up a copy. The extra $20 off is only avail in store.

In store $99.99- $20 in-store instant - $20 MIR - $20 upgrade MIR

For the upgrade MIR you need a copy of your Toast 9 receipt and any ONE of the following

Your old Toast Serial Number (an option on the rebate form downloaded from Roxio)
A xerox of the old CD install disc
A xerox of the previous version user manual title page

Also depending on which upgrade rebate form you use (the one from the Roxio page or the one from the Fry's online page), Roxio will accept other Roxio products (eg Easy CD Creator) which the Fry's one has.
