[IA] Any word on NE Cedar Rapids outage?

Actually, I have no idea how much area this effects as there is zero information out there… Our net* has been out since about 11pm-ish Sunday night. I'm sure it's storm related, but is there *any* information about what's going on? Every day, they say "this afternoon"…

Fortunately the techs have been nice (when I called first yesterday, the annoying robo-lady didn't say my area had an outage, so I continued through), and even offered me credit, but all they seem to know is "they're working on it." At least the power company keeps people updated via twitter or whatnot saying at least how severe something is with at least a vague-but-valid ETA. It'd be nice to not reset my modem every hour or so in the hopes that that'll get it to finally pick up a revived signal. If it's something catastrophic, I certainly wouldn't bother more than a couple times…

Luckily I have unlimited data on my phone plan since I have absolutely no idea how long this might go on (or heck, even if it's just my block they're working on or something…)

*I dumped cable a few months ago, so just have internet service. Hence no reference to cable/phone.

[MN] Speedtest thinks I'm where now?!?!

So new fun problem.
I noticed that my speed seemed to be slow again, so I hit up speedtest to check.
First thing I notice, it thinks I'm in LA,CA instead of the more correct and previous MN.
Additonally, my top down speed is about 15 Mbps instead of 50 Mbps.
Lastly, http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/visual-tracert/ is also showing my location as LA,CA.
Anyone have some thoughts?

[IA] Slow speeds suddenly when using a router

I suddenly am havng horrific speeds when connecting with a router. I normally get 15-20Mbps download, and still can when connected directly to the modem. However, if I try connecting with a router (I've tried multiple, both wireless and wired), I get around 1Mbps down. Nothing's changed on our end, and it's for multiple devices. I've noticed it just about ever since the recent Fiber cuts (most likely unrelated, but potentially not as well).

Anyone have any thoughts/ideas/suggestions/similar things happen? I can barely do crap on this connection now.

[IA] Random upstream packet loss

Hey guys,

Long time lurker, recently got Mediacom again at my new place and I've had it about two months.

I'm a youtube content creator and livestreamer, so the quality of my internet connection is of utmost importance to me.

I've noticed that at random times throughout the day and night I will suddenly drop a lot of data (admittedly only on the upstream, and only for about 30 seconds to a minute)

Some people may chastise me for complaining about such a small problem, but in my (side) business a few seconds of packet loss can mean the difference between a night where I have 3000 people watching me on live stream, and having 30 viewers, or it could mean a failed upload to youtube...

At this point, I'm not too sure what to do - I can't seem to access any diagnostic data in my gateway - when I go to 192.168.0.1 and login, I've explored all of the potential hiding places for my signal data and such, and I just don't think it's available to me.

I have the Ultra 105/10, and my speeds are perfectly fine, it's just the random upstream latency spikes and packet loss which accompany them that are bothering me.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to proceed? Is there a hidden diagnostic information regarding the signal levels my modem is receiving and sending that I can access? I'm really hesitant to call Mediacom because of experiences I've had with their tech support in the past.

I appreciate any help you fine folks can provide!

Ultra 300 soon?

A tech was out at my house a few weeks ago and mentioned Ultra 300 (300 down 20 up) would be offered in the area soon. Is there any information available regarding this? I'm assuming the area is getting ready for it, I went from ~75-100 on speed tests to a guaranteed 100-118 on tests on my Ultra 105, so i assume something was changed recently, possibly upgrades to offer ultra 300?

any info appreciated ;)

[GA] Daily reconnects in Albany, GA

I've been having unreliable internet service for quite a long time.

In May of 2011 I replaced the Mediacom supplied modem with my own Motorola Surfboard SB5101U. Within a couple of months after the modem switch I experienced daily dropped connections. I would power cycle everything and eventually achieve connectivity but sometimes there would be a long delay.

I requested service and Mediacom sent a subcontractor who replaced some connections. I continued to get dropped connections.

I again requested service and Mediacom sent out a Mediacom employee who replaced some connections. I continued to get dropped connections.

I called the Mediacom service number and, after remote monitoring, I was told I had a bad modem.

In July of 2012 I purchased a Motorola Surfboard SB6121 modem after which dropped connections were replaced by daily reconnects.

I Think my modem is good. I think the cable and connectors outside the house are good. I thing the inside cable to the modem is mostly good. There is only one Mediacom splitter between the TV and modem line but that last line to the modem isn't RG6. The last time a Mediacom technician came out I asked whether the low quality line was a problem and he said that his measurements said the line was not a problem.

I don't want to buy a third modem and I don't want to rent a modem from Mediacom, however, back when I had a Mediacom modem I never had any problems.

I'm not a happy camper.

[AL] Wifi doesn't work because I'm not in their system?!

Ok people - need some clarification if you can please. First, since I'm in IT, I'll provide the specs on my LAN:
Device: Cisco DPC3825 DOCSIS 3.0 Gateway
Location: Alabama
Plan: $79/mo. Internet Only

When the installer came out, I informed him he can simply drop it off and I'll take care of the rest.

Setup was easy enough. Wireless configuration consists of WPA-2 Personal - TKIP+AES encryption for compatibility's sake with device's on the LAN such as PS3, among others. I've configured Port Range Forwarding under Applications & Gaming to allow SSH connectivity to a few of the hosts on the LAN. I have a total of 14 hosts on the LAN; 9 of which connect wirelessly. I don't have MAC filtering enabled. The SSID is not broadcasted.

Up until a week ago, wireless has been working great. Then, I started noticing that the radio transmitter simply stops. I can scan for wireless frequencies and get zero coming from the Cisco device. Oddly enough, it comes back up as soon as I reboot it. Then, another day or so and it's the same issue.

Just a few minutes ago, I got off the phone with Mediacom (apparently a call center in the Philippines). The first rep I spoke with was nice enough, but asked me to provide her with my SSID AS WELL AS MY PASSWORD FOR THE WIRELESS NETWORK. I asked her what possible help could that be to resolve my issues. She explained that Mediacom requires this information to sync their side with mine so that wireless will work properly. They mentioned something about a "Clear Access Control Panel" that should contain this information and admitted that the information should've already been populated and that somehow I must have slipped through the cracks. Furthermore, as they were asking me questions to verify my account information, she asked whether I could give her my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER to update the account, to which I replied, hell no.

Ok, so I'll admit that I keep up with technology fairly frequently and it's entirely possible that perhaps new technology may have arrived that somehow allows an ISP to send a signal to the wifi router for whatever purpose. However, I've never heard of this being the reason behind whether wireless would continue to work or not, all of a sudden. If anyone brave enough that works for Mediacom would please help confirm any of this information, perhaps I'd be a little more understanding and maybe even buy into the bologna a bit more. As of now, I can't possible begin to understand why it is that Mediacom won't allow my wireless functionality to operate UNLESS they have my settings stored on their end. I understand the necessity for them to have the MAC address of the device to put my line into an allow list and, thus, allow internet connectivity because of the MAC address being in their list, but I've never heard of wireless functionality working or not working based on whether or not the company has my information stored on their end.

Personally, I believe the problem is that the device I'm using is having hardware/firmware/software-related issues and may need to be replaced before things will go back to working as they did before, but it seems my only recourse for solving this issue is a personal visit to the store where I'm still not sure I'll be able to speak with someone that understands the fundamentals of networking enough to know how or why my symptoms are happening. The hope is to simply swap the device with another, run through the setup again, then things are as they were.

Does Mediacom hate it's customers

I'm having internet issues. Again.

Now i've gone back and forth with the Mediacom guys on the forum. Have had prob over a dozen different appointments setup, an entire line in the area replaced, so on. The issues just seem to keep coming.

Now I currently have 338 forum posts on the Mediacom forum. I'm not posting there because I love talking to the technicians, I post there because I have issues. Why do I have to keep doing this?

Hopefully someone here at DSL reports does a better job than the guys on the official mediacom forums do, because they typically are very vague and unhelpful. I refuse to call your phone number because I always get some inept idiot in India that doesn't speak english because it costs too much for Mediacom to employ people that can actually get a job done.

I don't know what the deal is, but I am beyond fed up with it. 338 Posts is 338 too many.

Anyways, on to the latest issue I am having:

[IL] Mediacom down 61230

The Internet went down Friday morning in the early hours... my neighbor called and had an appointment made for Saturday so figured I would just touch base and make sure the issue was resolved before he left. About 2 hours before he arrived the Internet came back up and everything was fine until 5pm? tonight (I don't have the exact time it dropped). The tech didn't report fixing anything and I am curious if its a known problem or if we have a bigger issue in the neighborhood that needs resolved.

Thanks!

TiVo user -- Some Starz HD channels not coming in -SOLVED

This past Thursday, I started not being to receive three Starz HD channels -- Starz Kids and Family (788), Starz Cinema (789) and Starz in Black (796). This was only on my two TiVos (HD and Premiere) -- on my third TV using just a Mediacom box, they come in fine. What comes up is the gray/black cablecard screen. But, what's interesting is that when I call up the program info for those channels (even though there's no video/audio) it says this -- "The copyright holder of this program permits viewing at less than high definition using component outputs." I am able to view all other Starz channels in my package; just not these three. The other interesting thing is that program info window says the video resolution is 720p on the channels I can't receive. It's 1080i on all the others that I DO receive.

I am using HDMI cables on the TiVo boxes and component on the Mediacom box. But, even when I hooked up one of the TiVo boxes with component, I was still unable to receive those three. I've been in discussion with Mediacom to no avail and a tech is scheduled to come out Tuesday. But this sounds to me like something Starz has done.

Anyone else using TiVo to get Starz having this problem?

[Cable TV] TV picture is zoomed in

We have 2 TVs and 2 boxes, 1 TV with that box is fine, the other one, the picture is zoomed in and can not figure out what is going on. It's something that recently happened. It's not just one channel, it's all of them. I have been through all the settings on the TV, nothing, even reset the settings. Looked through the settings on the cable box, can't seem to find anything either. Played something on the DVR from a month ago, it's zoomed it as well.
