[XPPro] "Open with" problem, XP Pro

When I try and "Open with" a .doc or .pdf file, the .doc files only open in MS Word (2007) and the .pdf files always open in Adobe pdf reader, regardless of which program I select. When I select open with -> choose program Word loads the file immediately I click on choose program. (Excel .xls are the same, as are .docx - I have not tried everything else, but .jpg are not affected, and open where I tell them.)

I have been to control panel -> folder options -> file types and tried unchecking "always open with this application", to no effect. I have altered the association so that .doc should always be opened by Open Office Swriter, again to no effect.

The files can be opened in other applications from within those applications.

This behaviour started about a week ago. Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Sean.

[WIN7] Folder Sharing and Permissions

I need help.

After installing Windows 7 Professional (upgrade from Win XP, clean install), my WinXP Home computers on the network could not access network shares. They could see them, but didn't have read permissions. I changed the share permissions, and after a few tries succeeded in getting the WinXP clients read permission.

The trouble is that I also managed to remove my own write permission! Now the Win7 host can read from the shared folder, but can not create, delete or modify files. And when I try to change permissions now, I'm met with grayed-out options or messages telling me I'm not allowed to do that.

I need to restore full control to my account in Win7 (Ethan\Ethan Rom) and allow at least read access to the network clients. (Network users can have full control, but not required.) There's only the one user account, and it is an Administrator level. I've tried opening Windows Explorer using the 'Run as Administrator' option, but that gives the same results.

Anything I can do? Thanks.

[WIN7] Digital Video capture/edit

Anyone have a good solution to capture digital video in Win7 with firewire?
I have a digital video camera I have had for years that was always simple to use with XP and Vista, but is now apparently useless with Win7.
I tried Windows Live, but I just keep getting missing DLL errors.
I downloaded Movie Maker 2.6 and it's the same thing.
I searched for Movie Maker 2.1, but am am unable to find a download link.
Luckily, I still have a Vaio with XP I can use, but would like to be able to do the same with my laptop using Win7.

[XPPro] Constant HDD activity

This is a fresh install of XP-Pro, service pack3 applied, all current Windows Updates applied...

There is something accessing the hard drive at a steady 2 second rate.

The only other thing I have installed it a Hauppauge TV tuner and it's software. When running the TV tuner the video pauses every time there is disk access.

I have checked what is running with the task manager and nothing looks like it should be doing this.

How can I find out what is constantly accessing the hard drive?

[XPPro] Which system would be best?

Not surprisingly, my aunt is reporting that the computer I gave her has been running "slow", mostly on FaceBook and YouTube. The specs of her current system are:

PII 400 Mhz (Slot)
384 MB Ram (I think)
AGP Video Card
PCI Audio Card
Windows XP
40 GB IDE HDD

I'm looking into replacing it with one of the extra systems I have laying around but am not sure which one to replace it with:

System One:
PIII 500 Mhz (Slot)
640 MB Ram
AGP Video Card
PCI Audio Card
Windows XP
40 GB IDE HDD

System Two:
Celeron 700 Mhz (Socket)
512 MB Ram
Integrated Video
Integrated Audio
Windows XP
40 GB IDE Hard Drive

XP mode wont install - nor virt PC

I'm running Win7x64 ulimate/trial - activated - and "XP mode" installs - but fails to create a start menu icon, and whatever else is necessary to work. The VHD and XP files are there, as well as a key file, but I can't "do" anything with them. (access denied)

When I try to install Virt PC - I get this "update is not applicable to you system" is no compatible with this system, message.

As usual, I've googled around and got nothing, the MS site mentions nothing... Virtual PC 2007 apparently does work, but I wanted to play with the newest software.........

Any ideas?

[WIN7] Sporatic DNS errors | Firefox 3.5.5 | Kaspersky 9

Hello folks. Been a while since I've posted on this site.

I am having a peculiar problem with my internet connection. Let me first tell you my setup.

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -
Windows 7 Ultimate (32bit) (upgraded from Vista SP2)
HP Pavillion s3300z | 2GB DDR2(maxed) | 2.3 GHz
Dual Screen
AT&T Y! DSL -- 2Wire modem (2701GH-B)
LAN connection with Cat5.
Kaspersky v9.0.0.x (v8 doesn't work with Win7)
- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I'm using Firefox (3.5.5). This problem occurs about 99% of the times with FF, and about %50 to %70 in other browsers. (IE,Opera,Chrome)

THE PROBLEM:

I am using the internet as normal, and when I click a link I get a DNS error and a [Try Again] button. Only after clicking on Try Again for several seconds, I get the page loaded. As long as I keep that tab open, that site works great with internal site links.

Again, If I click a new site URL or type it in, I have a 90% chance that I will get a DNS error page, or similar.

Now, sometimes not all images on the page load, or even the stylesheets.

This also happens on my laptop running Win7Ult32 and its browsers.

I have tried almost everything I can think of and am at my wit's end. Most of the help out there does not help me in my configuration. I don't have any other devices to troubleshoot with.

can someone help me out? I can follow directions if you just point me to the correct article or site. Or help me out here.

Am I overlooking something?

[WIN7] Outlook 2000/Windows 7 64 bit

Updated. Having a few minor annoyances. I can't get Outlook 2000 to remember its setting to empty the deleted folder on exit. I tried a registry tweak I found but it did nothing. I'm thinking something to do with 32 bit Office 2000 and 64 bit Windows 7?

Any ideas?
