Latency through the roof all day, sites unreachable

I'm on Millenicom's 20 GB plan with Verizon. Speeds have always been poor, particularly in the evening hours. Latency is generally in the 125-250 ms range.

But today... I've been unable to reach any website at all. No improvement in the past 14 hours. When I've tried pinging various sites, they typically time out. When I've managed to run a traceroute to, say, google.com, latency is all over the place but tends to be in the 500 - 3000 ms range (sometimes as high as 15,000 ms). Dropping packets like crazy, of course. As awful as Verizon's network is here, I've never experienced anything nearly this bad until today.

Called support and their suggestion was to "install VZAccess Manager and run whatever updates it says to do." I installed VZAM... no updates... no improvement... I did try updating the PRL just for giggles, no effect.

This is with a -85 dBm signal on EVDO-Rev. A. Good Ec/Io. As always.

Any ideas?

Terrible Image Quality

I noticed a few weeks ago that images accessed through my Millenicom/Verizon service are being degraded considerably. After doing some research online, I found that VZW is "optimizing" images and video to reduce the demand on their network. I also found one website that explained the practice and included sample images (I am not sure if I can link to it here because of spam rules).

I have a CradlePoint router so that I can use my laptops on wifi. I have tried plugging the USB modem directly into each computer, but I still have the image problem. I have even tried accessing the images on my phone directly through my local Verizon tower and the pictures are degraded considerably. I believe I have ruled out the possibility of it being hardware related.

I contacted Millenicom via email to explain the problem. I even included images accessed here and through AT&T at work. The difference is quite noticeable. Millenicom contacted VZW to make sure they weren't throttling my account or that any problems had been reported with my local tower. Millenicom then reset my modem and told me to call in if I still noticed a problem.

After coming here and not seeing any posts from others about network optimization, I am curious why I seem to be one of a small group that has even noticed. The degradation in quality is very pronounced. Product images on Amazon and eBay are quite grainy, and it is very hard to pick out detail. Images on Flickr and Google Photos do not seem to be degraded. I am assuming VZW recognizes they are dedicated to photography and have made an exception.

I find this practice to be unacceptable. I manage several websites, and I need to be able to see exactly what the end user will see while creating images for display online. I also think it is unfair to give someone a watered-down, lower quality connection just because your network is overloaded.

Is anyone else experiencing this problem? What should I do at this point?

Help deciding which service to choose.

I am going to be moving to my new house in the next couple weeks and the only internet options I know of so far is Hughesnet, Verison, and possibly att wireless. There is Hughes right now at my parents house and it is very unimpressive! I had been planning on going with verison through Millenicom the 59.99/20 gig month. One advantage to this plan is that I would have that Novatel U760 which has a port to plug external antenna incase I thought it would improve my signal a bit. There is only a 24-hour trial period though which is pretty bad. The other option I'm weighing in second is going with Verison 49.99/5 gig month. Most people would say go with $10 more a month for a much higher data cap. But here's the deal, the numbers I've been seeing that people are reporting with Verison/Millenicom service is so slow that I won't need the higher data cap and would rather keep the $10 month. The only reason I could want the 20 gig cap is if I can do netflix streaming through wii or online gaming. If it's too slow for that stuff like hughesnet is, 5 gig a month will be more than I can use. What do ya'll think? Recommendations? I'd say if it can stay connected and consistently run at .5 mbps or higher I'd like the 20 gig cap, however .05mbps is going to suck and probably won't use half of a 5 gig cap!
Btw, I can't find the Novatel U760 on the verison site, is there a newer one that has external antenna ports? Should I just go with the MiFi things you can get free when you sign up and take my chances on good enough signal? Any help info would be appreciated.

News from Millenicom ....

From Corporate:

"Millenicom is adding an Unlimited 3G/4G Plan that will work over the Sprint footprint starting February 1st. They are using the Franklin U600 (USB device with 4 external antenna ports). Pricing stays the same as their regular Unlimited Plan at $69.99/month with the normal $99.99 device purchase fee, $49.99 activation fee and $15.00 shipping fee. Customers currently using the Unlimited Plan can upgrade to 3G/4G by purchasing the new device (the activation fee is only $19.99 for current customers), they should check their address with the coverage locator on the Millenicom website to see if their location can get 4G service. Millenicom will be able to activate Sprint 3G/4G devices on their BYOD Plan for the same $69.99 rate."

Hotspot question

Is there a way to monitor my usage with the hotspot. I found the usage on the modems configuration page but I am pretty sure it isn't right and verizon says the VZaccess manager won't work with it and of course registering it with Verizon didn't work because there is nowhere for them to send the temporary password without the VZaccess. Open to ant suggestions. I am not to worried about it because I came from HN and with out usage on that system we rarely ever used anywhere close to our daily limit of 550 MB so thats way less than 17 GB per month but it will still be nice to know in case I get a wild hair, lol.

Questions about millenicom

I am going to be moving into a new house that I just bought. So far the only internet options I'm going to have are satellite or a mobile broadband device. I am definitely on a budget so I would like to avoid satellite because of initial setup costs. How is millenicom doing? They said I would only have 24 hours to send it back if I didn't like it. Thats not very long. I am more concerned about consistency than high speed. I would like good speed, but more so just need it to work when I need to get online. Also, is this the same as getting Verison mobile broadband? Would at&t mobile broadband work better or worse?

Cyfre Amp and Splitter for sale!

Due to signal fluctuations in my valley, my grid antenna is no longer able to provide a stable upload due to it's narrow beam-width. Even at -68dbm. So I am going to sell my amp setup now as I want to purchase a new one with the omni antenna and all. The amp and splitter are fully functional. Also, if the new setup works like a charm my grid antenna will be for sale at a great price, but for now I can't sell the grid yet.

Included:

Cyfre-Amp, along with the instructions and power cords and adapter.
Spitter(http://www.l-com.com/item.aspx?id=20867)

Max said a good price for the amp would be around $100, as new they are around $200. The splitter is $40 new, so I will go $20 on that.

So $120 for the amp and splitter is what I am asking. I use paypal. You will need to purchase your own connectors and terminators to hook them up.

The connectors I used were:

Splitter: N-Male Terminator, N-Male to N-Male adapter.(To connect the Splitter to the Amp you will need a TNC-Male to N-Male connector.)

598U adapter cable to the amp you need a FMR-Female to TNC-Male connector.

All connectors can be found on e-bay, the terminator I could only find on L-com.

Each connector came around over $9-10 bucks(including shipping) for me to buy and they are a pain to re-buy so I do not wish to sell them.

Just PM/E-mail if interested. The sooner the better.

Note: The splitter is so you can use a single-band antenna with the amp. Such as 1900Mhz, or a 850mhz only antenna.

You can use the amp without the splitter but by using a dual-band antenna.

Data Switching from PCS to 850

I have been experiencing fairly regular frequency switches (once or twice every week) on my Verizon 3G connection from my local tower.

I have a 2.4 Ghz parabolic grid antenna (as suggested at evdotips by Jim_in_VA) as my data is on PCS (1900Mhz). I have been getting -80 to -75 signal strength hitting a tower about 3.5 miles away. I normally see 1.5 Mbps to 2.5 Mbps connection speeds depending on the time of day.

I will on occasion see my signal strength drop to -95 or lower and my speeds will usually drop to less than 300 kbps.

When this happens, I open the field test box on the VZAM and will notice a channel listed that is NOT a multiple of 25 (mine usually ends up on 1019) indicating I am now on the 850 Mhz band. Note: This is the value for "Channel" listed near RSSI and EC/IO, not the channels listed at the top of the list (Primary and Secondary). If this number is divisible by 25, you are likely on PCS. If not you are likely on 850 Mhz. Thanks to Jim_in_VA again for this valuable piece of info.

This usually means I have to switch to my Wilson Yagi (from my Wilson LTE amplifier kit, long story...) to regain a similar signal strength and to regain my connection speeds. I am usually on the 850Mhz channel for less than 24 hours and my signal strength drops off again and I find I am back on PCS.

I am not sure why this is happening. I am hoping it is due to a tower upgrade to LTE but I cannot verify this. It is a bit of a hassle to switch antennas every time this happens, but at least it is a solution to the problem.

I wanted to put this out there for anyone that might see an unexpected drop in signal and/or speed as a possible troubleshooting guide. I have learned quite a bit of information from everyone here so I wanted to post this to give back to the support community.

How Siri is ruining your cellphone service

Like a few million other people this past holiday season, we bought an iPhone 4S, with its much-hyped Siri feature. The vocal interface allows users to speak all kinds of commands into the phone (“What’s the weather in San Francisco?”) and get answers from a sultry-voiced robot/concierge.

We’ve used Siri to get directions, to make hands-free mobile calls and to fetch answers to trivia questions. Sometimes we just goof on Siri. “Siri, do you love me?” my daughter asked the other day. (Siri’s heartbreaking response: “I am not capable of love.”) Most ways you look at it, Siri is pretty magical.

But not in every way. Siri’s dirty little secret is that she’s a bandwidth guzzler, the digital equivalent of a 10-miles-per-gallon Hummer H1.

To make your wish her command, Siri floods your cell network with a stream of data; her responses require a similarly large flow in return. A study published this month by Arieso, an Atlanta firm that specializes in mobile networks, found that the Siri-equipped iPhone 4S uses twice as much data as does the plain old iPhone 4 and nearly three times as much as does the iPhone 3G. The new phone requires far more data than most other advanced smartphones, which are pretty data-intensive themselves, The Post has reported.

In all, Arieso says that the Siri-equipped iPhone 4S “appears to unleash data consumption behaviors that have no precedent.”

Millenicom Disconnects

I posted this to the Networking forum but figured I would post here as well since I am using Millenicom.

I am having a very annoying problem with my internet connection that I need help with.

First, I will describe my network configuration and then describe the problem. The setup consists of a desktop computer running Windows XP SP3 connected to the Internet (Millenicom) via a Pantch UM175 USB modem. The same computer is connected via a PCI Ethernet card to a Linsys WRT54GL wireless router. The desktop computer is configured to share the internet connection from the USB modem. I have other computers and a Wii on the network that connect wirelessly to the desktop via the Linksys.

Now for the problem. If the LAN connection that is connected to the linksys router is disabled, I can connect to the Internet via the USB modem and will stay connected all day long. If I enable the LAN connection to the linksys router, the Internet connection consistently disconnects every 5 minutes. I am able to connect all other computers on the network to the desktop computer wirelessly over the Linksys with no problems. The LAN to the Linksys remains connected when the Internet connection is dropped. The only message that I see in Event Viewer when the disconnect happens is an information message under the System branch indicating that the disconnect occurred.

My only guess is that this could be related to a timeout configuration for ICS but the Internet drops even when there is continuous Internet activity.

I have scanned the computer for viruses and have not found any.

I updated the driver for the Ethernet card to the latest version.

Any help would be appreciated. I have searched the Internet for many hours trying to find a solution but have not been able to.
