Verizon 4G rollout

I am about a month into my 20G Jetpack subscription. Currently in a 3G only area at my home. I have read conflicting reports about Verizon's 4G roll out recently.

Some older press releases I saw said that by 2013 all areas that currently had 3G would be upgraded to 4G. Recently I read another article that stated Verizon is ahead of schedule on it's nationwide 4G roll out and is basically "done" with 700 MHZ roll out. I am wondering because I have been in a 3G only area all this time and curious with the seemingly conflicting statements...

Anyone know if Verizon is done with it's 700 MHz roll out? It is my understanding the the new frequency they are going to use is not compatible with the jetpack that is currently being distributed my Millenicom. It would really stink if my home area only gets 4G in the new frequency range.

Ditching Millenicom & going back to Verizon

Unless you guys have a solution, I will be doing what the Subject line says.

The Millenicom Jetpack (4620) keeps dropping my WIFI connection and totally screws up online gaming and web browsing. Called tech support and they said it was because I kept the Jetpack plugged in all the time. Well, even with it on battery power it does the same thing. And the battery only lasts about 4 hours, so it would be a real PIA to constantly keep up with it. Tech guy said leaving it plugged in will kill the battery and also effect it's operation.

They asked how far away my device was from the JP and I told them about 20', but going through the wooden floor from my basement to the bedroom above. They said that distance may be too far. Well, I can be in the back yard, some 100' away with my cell phone and it has no problem linking up and operating.

Since my old Jetpack (890L) from Verizon is still active, I tried it with my system and it operates flawlessly.

So,,,,,,, you guys have any solutions? Do you guys leave your Jetpack plugged in all the time? Constantly monitoring the battery is a deal killer for me.

Well the new antenna didn't work out....

I am currently using the magnetic antenna that is part of the cyfre 819 amp kit. I "thought" I would buy a 9dbm gain antenna and mount it higher up. When I connected the new antenna I LOST 7 DBM in signal strength despite the new antenna being rated higher.

I guess I am going to have to build a tower and use my Yagi to try to find a good signal. I am currently seeing -104 to -109dbm with the cyfre antenna.....

Hi Jim, need some help

It's been a while since I've had any issues. Max signal and Jim were always a great help in the past though :)

I have the Verizon Jetpack 4620LE and I am looking for an all inclusive "kit", much like the cyfre amp/antenna kit I purchased many moons ago for my UM175.

The only thing I have really found (without a whole lot of digging) was the sleek? I haven't had much trouble with this Mifi device, but lately the signal is just too inconsistent.. looking for some help to get it evened out.

If you guys could steer me towards some equipment that would be great.

Thanks as always.

Millenicom BYOD hotspot choices and recommendations

Hi all,
Currently on ATT with an Elevate 4g hotspot and DD-WRT router setup with Wifi as WAN. Great speeds (4G) with 6-8 mbps down even with a cheezy 6" indoor antenna from 3gstore... but the 5GB cap is killing me.

I checked and the tower (0.4 miles away) at the end of our road has Sprint 3G. I have LOS in the fall when there is no leaves. So otherwise just a couple of big honking Oak trees 25yds away is holding me back from a good LOS. There is a few holes in the leaves.

I assume I'll be on 3G for a while. Probably will need a better antenna too...

What are the best options for BYOD Millenicom hotspots? (Assuming a Hotspot is the best way to go?)

Thanks for any help!

4620LE Unlock?

Per the Novatel website regarding the 4620LE:

Put the world in the palm of your hand
With this 4G LTE MiFi intelligent mobile hotspot, enjoy fast Internet access whenever, wherever you go. MiFi 4620LE is backward compatible with high speed DC HSPA+, HSPA+, WCDMA, EDGE and GPRS technologies to keep you connected. The compact MiFi 4620LE is perfect for on-the-go connectivity and won’t weigh you down.

Would it be possible to unlock my 4620LE and throw my Telcel SIM in it for next time I take a trip to Mexico??? That would be sweet!!!

First day on Sprint 4g LTE in "fair area"

Just received my u770 triband modem today. I am in the Sprint 4G "fair" area. I am seeing speeds of 5mbps down and 1.5mbps up at the moment. I am getting between 2 and three bars here at this location.

My Yagi isn't helping so I put up an old car rooftop model I had and it seems to work OK. I am going to but a new omni directional antenna that mounts on the eve and be done with it. If all I can get speed wise is 4 to 5 mbps I am a happy camper. (I was on Verison 3G and "good" for me was 500kbps)

Lightning protection?

What is the best lightning protection for my antenna/amp? I have a omni directional antenna set up on a pole outside, it is connected to a cyfre amp. Will the map power cord ground it ok? I always disconnect the modem side during thunderstorms so would any strike go through the amp power?

Any suggestions of what to do during a storm?

Coax for outside antenna

Are Wimax Towers Being Killed?

About two months ago, my BYOD plan with an Overdrive Pro started acting up.

I'm in an area which was labeled in the Sprint map as Best, and my normal experience was pretty much that, average download speed 6mpbs, average upload speed 1.4mbps.

Two months ago, on Wednesday, March 13th, as if a switch was thrown, my signal strength fell to 20%, my download speed to 1.5 mbps and upload speed to .4 mbps.

I've reported the problem to Millenicom who have banged on Sprint's door repeatedly since then trying to get their attention, so far with no success, as far as I can tell.

I'm seeing the same issues with my Sprint HTC Evo Shift phone, which is a 4G Wimax phone.

Over the past month there have been some changes but little improvement; it is no longer constantly at 20% signal strength with the slow speeds. Instead, every two hours or so, strength jumps up to 40% and speeds go back to normal; then an hour or so later things drop into the toilet again (at the moment things are normal).

But here's why I'm posting this message: in the latest updated Sprint coverage map (dated 5/14) MY AREA HAS BEEN DOWNGRADED TO 4G WIMAX FAIR!

I'd really like to know what the more experienced members of this forum make of this development: Is Sprint or Clear turning off their Wimax towers as they prepare to roll out LTE? Is it logical to assume that that's it, that my area will NEVER be upgraded back to Best for Wimax coverage? Has anyone else here seen a change like that in their coverage? Was it permanent? Was it temporary? Would it appear logical that the map is merely belatedly reflecting a permanent change in Sprint's coverage which was implemented back in March? What do any of you make of this development?

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your feedback.

Any tricks/tips for maintaining connection U770/MBR95?

Just moved to the Sprint unlimited 4G plan using a U770 on an MBR95 router. Speeds are more than I had hoped but I am getting disconnected too often. I usually can get it back if I reboot the router.

Are there any modem settings or router settings that would help the situation?

Port 26 surprise to me on verizon

I've used port 26 to send mail for years over many carriers including verizon. Today, port 26 is blocked on verizon using my Millenicom mifi. port 587 didn't work for a while either, but for right now, it does.

This is different than the verizon network my cell phone uses, because port 26 still works on that.

Geez verizon, get a clue!!! pain in the butt to have to deal with this at all. Don't know if "real" verizon mifi users had the same thing happen to them or just my mifi.

Millenicom 3G/4G Hotspot ... a couple of observations

I've been experimenting with all the available setting with this device via the configuration page. I've observed (at my location), with the WWAN Preferred mode set to "Global" , (so both 3G/4G is available)...
if IPv6 is enabled.. I lose the LTE signal and it reverts to 3G.

I suggest you disable IPv6 in your settings if it is enabled ... Network>LAN> uncheck it.

SW 4G LTE Hotspot (AirCard 803s)

I am on a Millenicom's BYOD unlimited plan with a SW 4G LTE Hotspot. We use the device for our home internet since there are no other high speed options. We have excellent coverage at our house and get great speeds (per speedtest.net - D: ~20Mbps; U:~8Mbps). We usually have 2-3 devices connected at a time (between DVR, laptops, bluray player, etc.). On average, only one device may be eating up larger amounts of bandwidth at a time.

The problem is that about once a day our internet drops completely and requires the hotspot to be reset. I can't seem to find any reason for this problem. The hotspot still shows that it's connected to 4G, but no traffic is going through. All the devices still show that they are connected, but if we disconnect a device and attempt to reconnect the connection fails for being unable to obtain an IP. The hotspot doesn't appear to be frozen and I can still access it via the physical or web interface (Note: can only connect to the web interface through the PC connected to the hotspot by USB). I have tried disconnecting the hotspot from data and then reconnecting, but it fails. The only thing that seems to work is a full reboot. And even then, sometimes it happens again shortly later.

Overall, this has the feel of a router issue. I've run into similar problems like this with routers, but not at this frequency. Has anyone experienced something like this or can help me begin to troubleshoot the hotspot? It's really a great service when it works, but it's so frustrating that it drops out so often!
