Comments on news posted 2009-01-07 16:32:44: As we had warned earlier this week, VPN4Life looked a little too good to be true, the service offering customers a one time $29 payment for a lifetime of anonymous VPN-based BitTorrent access. ..

Sigh....

Since what I posted got deleted for whatever reason, I stated I smell a lawsuit soon due to the fact that they are now claiming no refunds once they were found to be scammers.

Firefox say the site is dangerous so that's another reason to stay away

For some reason "too good to be true" came into my head.
If this was lifetime of VPN - torrent or big downloads, I can kinda see it...but the price tag would have to be a little bigger. But, comeon, any technical person knows that torrents will rip through your available bandwidth.

A torrent will only rip through your bandwidth if you let it

Not horrible...

VPN4Life quickly refunded me when I asked, and even said in their "software delivery" email that refunds could be processed simply by replying to the software delivery email.

Also, the site is pretty basic. No malware that I can tell, but quite scammy.

Personally, I wish there was a VPN where you could buy GBs of bandwidth for a set price, then use them whenever. Maybe 25 cents per GB if you buy $10 worth, 20 if you buy $20, 10 if you buy $50. Cogent network would be fine

Pay double for an internet connection?
Its called HTTPS, or wait everyone complains about MITM attacks (even though that really couldn't happen in a VPN scenario). So you would pay lets say $10/5GBs from your ISP and $1/GB from VPN R' Us? Looks like these costs will build up pretty quickly if you ask me.

I'm not paying $2 per GB to my ISP, more like 25 cents per GB. And if my traffic is valuable enough to be routed over a VPN, sure I'll pay a little extra change to do so. Intertubes cost money, yaknow?

Ha!

Of course they're giving out refunds. Thats a lawsuit waiting to happen. If you want some extra "security" on the internet and your a Mac or PC user try, PeerGaurdian. Its free, up to date, and shit as far as I can tell... it works.

Would it really sell if true?

I've got some good capacity/hardware setup to run such a service, but would people really pay for it? I mean, you VPN and then so what? What makes a real difference anyway if an ISP is going to throttle a service, wouldn't they target the "IP address with 10,000 simultaneous connections" first or just block the VPN service altogether if they wanted to?

How much would you be willing to pay/already pay for an open VPN service?

Isn't this like putting a straw inside a straw? This will still likely count against your ISP's cap if they have one.

agreed, I use them and it's only about $65/yr to renew. Although if you do renew your service I would suggest you use IE for the transaction or have a really good translator for firefox.

Had I used IE I probably would not have struggled near as much to get the renewal done.
