Comments on news posted 2009-01-20 09:04:32: Last week we noted that Verizon was opposed to Congressional plans to delay the digital TV transition from February to June, saying that any delay could seriously impact their plan to deploy 700Mhz LTE wireless broadband technology in 2009. ..

Ugh. I can't believe that Verizon thinks there will be no additional delays in the DTV transition.

This transition needs to be over and done with.

Too late

we are 28 days away. And we know nothing is getting done today. Congress would have to be stupid to pass a delay 27 days or less before the shut off. Oh wait......

I agree. You can't trust a politicians promise. So what does Verizon get out of this delay? Well, as Karl said, LTE rollout won't really be impacted, so they lose nothing there because of a delay. But they do get more time to advertise to OTA only people and sign them up for Fios TV subscriptions.

Also, they get to suck up to and not annoy Rockefeller - the new Chairman of the Commerce committee, who has the ability to make life miserable for Verizon if they don't give in to his demands. They have to live with him for the next 2 yrs, at least, and probably longer. Such is life and politics in Washington.

Jeeeeez

Get it over with! Get it over with!!!!

One of the big reasons I want it over with is because it's the only way some TV stations will go full power. Right now i'm not getting WNET-DT because they are on low power.

Of course Verizon want's to delay DTV transition.

Cable agreed to freeze all analog to digital migrations until a month after the DTV transition.

If the DTV transition is pushed back, it may mean that the FCC will require Cable providers to push back migrations as well. That in turn will eliminate progress for the cable industry. In systems like mine where every piece of the 750 MHz spectrum is used, analog migration is the only way to go. If they can keep Cable systems in the dark ages with lack of HD and DOCSIS 3.0 bandwidth, it gives Verizon a few extra months to grab subscribers in it's FIOS territory.

Of all the important things Congress should be working on, this is NOT one of them.

+1 to that comment. For once FCC and Government stay out of this and let the procrastinators suffer for once.

Re: Morons

I would just like to point out, that I saw an service announcement last night that my local Fox affiliate wouldn't have their OTA DTV broadcasting ready until March or April. So anyone who uses an OTA antenna won't have a Fox station at all after February 17th for 2 months or so.

I'm betting a lot of other stations are in this same boat. So now I've flipped flopped and I again support the delay.

Consider the Enviornment Obama

Running two transmitters (analog & digital) has a much larger carbon foot print and is not green. Would think Al Gore and all his environmentalists cronies would be all over this trying to make sure the switch over occurs occurs so broadcasters can shutdown those old inefficient power hungry analog transmitters.

But, all those people who didn't get converter boxes will sit around eating more, becoming obese, and contributing to the rising costs of health care.

No. Because the TV won't be shoving sugar water (liquid candy) and junk food in their face every ten minutes.

Two stations just switched in our market.

Apparently St Louis must have known this was coming for a while(more than 30 days). Two of our stations shut down their analog transmitters yesterday (channels 4,24) and have gone all digital. The one station had been simulcasting for quite a while, but the other just switched over all at once(vast improvement). It is kinda nice for St Louis to be in the front of the bus for a change.

So to be clear, if you have an analog set with no digital converter box you no longer get those channels?

Oh the horrors. If people want that station so bad they can get cable or satellite. There is no need for the government to solve a problem that can easily be solved by the affected people themselves.

"Of all the important things Congress should be working on, this is NOT one of them."

You don't think so? Technical progress in a nation that claims to be very advanced yet is still in the dark ages isn't something important? While I agree that education, health and transportation are important issues needing dealt with. Progressing in regards to technology is something that also needs addressed.

I'm sure there were issues with the transition from black and white to color television. I'd venture to bet other advancements caused some headaches as well. But the fact remains that enough time has been given for people to prepare for this. No amount of extra time is going to help them become better prepared. It's time to stop dragging our feet and just get it over with.

For the record there are a few other things Obama has done before he got into office today that have me worried. And no I'm not saying that do to any dislike. I just don't have a good feeling when someone isn't wanting to support progress or wanting to hinder it when no serious issues would come about do to implementing the new technology etc.

And by the way - all the people who keep rant and rave about Al Gore and his crusade. You are the reason this country is in the mess it is. Keep complaining about all the things you rant about while being a hypocrite and not making changes that make this country actually independent. If you actually had brains and would support eco-friendly policies you might be surprised at the benefits it would have to economy and overall health of this nation. Beat your chest about how great America is while you continue to help run us right into the ground!!
