Comments on news posted 2009-01-29 11:41:49: Buried in yesterday's AT&T earnings (kind of like their vanilla DSL subscriber numbers) was the fact that the telco will be slowing their deployment of U-Verse. ..

Elegant?

AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson called it "a more elegant build plan.

I call FTTH/FTTP elegant, I wonder what is his definition of 'elegant' IPTV via morse code?

Waiting

U-Verse, heck I'm still waiting for the DSL they said would be availble buy the end of 2002 in my neighborhood. I guess I can expect U-Verse sometime around the end of the century then.

They had better not cap...

...or people will stick with Comcast or other such places, unless they're in Beaumont...

18/1.5 service is nice and fast...when you don't have the TV on. But a 150GB cap on said service is just outright lame.

Patiently Waiting

I'm just a few houses away from being able to get Uverse, and based on the way my neighborhood is laid out it's not likely AT&T will install a closer VRAD anytime in the near future.

Do you think this news may also push out pair bonding?

@rr.com

I think they're wasting their time. They should have gone with FTTH. I have watched them prep my neighborhood for U-Verse. The installation of the VRAD is the easiest thing involved with U-Verse. They have had to dig, inspect and reconfigure every little box throughout the neighborhood. In the process they screwed up my telephone service. They could have strung fiber in 1/5 of the effort involved with U-Verse. Then they will have to do it all over again in 5 years since between SDV and DOCSIS 3.0, cable has them beat.

 Availability not the problem?

It seems to me that availability isn't the problem if the people who have it available to them aren't signing up. It looks like AT&T underestimated the uptake rate.

Also, they probably already have a budget allocated for advertising/marketing. They merely have to change the target and content. Building more infrastructure costs more, no matter how you plan it.

The way I read it, they are simply looking for a way to reduce their spending over the next year. Rather than pull money from the marketing department, they opted to delay their build-out.

Re: Patiently Waiting

If a bnad-aid is 90% of the cost of a full repair, and you'reAT&T, you take the band-aid, then slap yourself in the head when DOCSIS 3 gets 20% more downstream speed and 200% more upstream speed for the same price.

Why AT&T is deploying VDSL is beyond me. The only place that should be deployed is last-hundred-feet MDU installs, and even then Corning now has bendable fiber to get around that.

Meh!

Oh great....

Now my 4-5 year deployment (estimated) is now going to be 9-10 year deployment. I won't be able to sell my house because it doesn't have U-verse. Even though I don't plan to move for a very very very long time.

Wait a couple of million years. Geologic drift should take care of this for you.

This is an opportunity for them to upsell all their DSL customers to Uverse. Up to now they have been pushing rollout. Now they will spend some of the money they would have used to reach more areas and hire more sales people to get customers in the existing areas to switch to Uverse.

Maybe they're fix the issues with VoIP on Uverse.

Many areas have Uverse TV/Internet but are still tied to POTS.

Could it be that they're going to..
a) Get VoIP working (i.e. Los Angeles area has no AT&T Uverse VoIP)
b) Create a usable bundle with cellphone/microcell tied into their Uverse service

I knew this would be reported

They installed VRADS all over my neck of the woods but still no word of when it will be launched. They better hurry because by the time March roll's by Comcast will deploy DOCSIS 3.0 speeds.

Should not this great next gen service sell it's self?

By having to spend so much on marketing they should see for themselfs that the deployment of FTTN instead of FTTH is flawed.

Looks like short term savings will cost more in the long run.

Still have lead

U-Verse is deployed in my neighborhood. But it will not work at my end of the block, we still have lead lines in our alley. I have a couple of neighbors that have tried to get it. It does not work over lead...you need copper. I they can't even up grade us to copper, how are they going to sell us advanced services.

I guess I'll stay with Comcast.

Why get less for more?

I'm not in a U-Verse area but don't those areas already get advertisements of the service. If those didn't work then people don't want the service. In many cases cable internet is noticeably faster especially with upload. VDSL maxes out at 1Mb Up and cable can be around 2+ (5+ with Doc 3).

Don't know if it will cost more in the long run but U-Verse costs keep going up while Verizon's costs for FiOS keep going down.
