Comments on news posted 2009-02-05 16:29:38: [att=1397413,r]Users in our Shaw forum indicate that the Canadian Cable operator Shaw has quietly launched a new 100Mbps downstream 5Mbps upstream DOCSIS 3.0 tier, though it's only currently available in Saskatoon. The new tier costs $249. ..

| | Here are your no cost extras! I wonder what the 8 no cost extras are in the ad!
- Lube (for when you relize how screwed you are on this plan) - India support - 3 year contract - endless telemarketting calls - junk mail - junk paper mail - a UPTO service - quality of service automatically degrades when your neibour is downloading porn =-)

| Whats the point? Shaw has been pusing their faster than DSL speeds for year, but the caps make those speeds pointless. Who cares if you're connection is 15mbps but you can only download 150 gigs, or ifs its 100mbps and you can only download 250mbps.
There's no need for that kind of speed unless you get a larger cap.
I wish they're would be competition around bandwidth rather than speed. An advertising war about how we offer 500 gigs when the competition only offers 250. DSL would be primed win in that kind of environment, give shaw a run for their money anyways.
| | | no worries when i lived in saskatoon... I was using 150GB combined before I got a phone call warning me to back it off. Something tells me the 200GB cap isn't enforced. | |
| | | | Re: no worries shaw are whiny little turds these days about the caps. Go over like 100 gigs and there pretty good chance they will phone you to bitch(OMG U R USEING THE INTERNET U BSTARD). Better off going with teksavvy if your a heavy user or telus if u use more then the 60gig limits(telus doesnt enforce unless its extremely higher like 250gigs) | |
| | | | | Re: no worries LOL looks like they changed it to 25/1 with 150GB for $93/m still a complete ripoff and laughable. | |
| | | | otty join:2008-10-24 Revelstoke, BC | Re: no worries I'm here in Saskatoon happily downloading 2-4 gigs per day on my 2mbps DSL connection from Sasktel that I get free with my rent. Not throttling, not bother. Sure a little more speed would be ok, but I'd rather get a bigger appartment or something than get ripped off with this crap | |
| | | | | | | Re: no worries
Hey Otty, what I don't get is the repeated quote 'quietly launched DOCSIS'. Was there no warning whatsoever? Did they send out mailers or blitzkreig telemarketing or start changing modems? I just don't get how no one saw it before it was launched.

| | Canadian, CANADIAN! Learn to read! First off, ^ this is Canadian broadband. All you "oh blah blah I have 10/5 yada yada you suck" folks get your facts right. I live in a major Canadian city, and the AVERAGE speed available for purchase is 5/512 at 49.99 cad $/month (btw Techsavvy is the exception, go them!). 100/5 is unheard of and while the price is high, most of you don't understand how nearly impossible it is to get this sort of connection.
As far as the caps go, anyone who complains about them must ask one question: What do you do that uses the majority of your bandwidth allotment?
I GUARANTEE that it's not legal. To run up 200+gb of data a month is to be consuming massive amounts of media. Do you honestly buy 200gb+ a month of legit media? Well do you?
Many of you may retort by stating that you use your connection for business related tasks (backing up large files, downloading latest auto-cad render ect ect), I must ask, why on earth are you using your residential connection for business? Furthermore why do you expect said connection to carry the load of a business connection. If you wish to use your connection for business then purchase a business connection. Simple enough.
Lastly, IPTV, or at least HD content legally available. Crunching some simple numbers, 200gb can conservatively get you 10 HD movies a month. If your watching more than 10 movies a month, in my mind at least, your usage is above average, and as such your 200gb will not be enough. Overage fee's should then apply. Maybe you should get off your lazy ass and drive to the movie rental store 5-10 mins away and get a damned disk.
SO, to sum up, 100/5 in Canada is very very nice. Pricing is expensive, but in line with other tiers. 200gb cap (btw 5/512 is 60gb capped) is plenty for the moment. Using your connection for illegal purposes does not give you a valid reasons to complain about caps, PERIOD.
Well, that's about it. Regards, ~Blah

And I can guarantee you that what I download/upload is at a minimum 90% legal. I downlaod/upload 1TB to 2TB a month now. Just watching 10 VUDU HDX titles is at least 100GB, plus my 3 VUDU boxes are constantly uploading at 333kbs each all the time. That adds up too. I download alo t of trailers from the PC, Xbox live etc. And I have over 40 devices on my network accessing the internet. I just know that each month I'm now using at least 1TB with 2TB being the most I've used ina month so far.
| | | | | Re: Canadian, CANADIAN! Learn to read! aaronwt, if your using over a TB of data a month, you have bigger issues than monthly caps. You are the person whom abuses the system, and thus ruins it for everyone else.
At the moment if Internet service can be thought of as an all you can eat buffet, you would be the person who just took the whole damned tray back to the table.
Your usage is NOT normal, and thus cannot be held up as reasons for pissing on a new service. Like I said, get off your lazy ass and get a disk. Your expecting a level of service from a product that is not meant, nor targeted towards you. With your usage amounts, it is my opinion that you should get either a dedicated line, or business class service. All your bandwidth usage will and DOES affect your neighbors. Your abusing the system.
Higher speed internet connections, especially this particular offering are meant to reduce customer waiting. Using the much lauded Ferrari example, just because you own one does not give you the RIGHT to drive 200kph down main street. You must follow the same laws and socially acceptable behaviors as everyone else.
100/5 does not mean you are allowed to consume massive amounts of data, it simply means you get your data faster. The caps are there for a reason. Again I stress, residential ISP services are a COLLECTIVE system. When you make use of your service, your not just taking bandwidth out of the air, your taking a resource from a LIMITED pool.
What gives you the right to use more than Bill next door? Not the money you pay monthly that's for sure. Sure it does you say? Uh, excuse me but what the crap do you think your getting 100/5 for, free? Your money pays for the BANDWIDTH, not data consumed. 200gb is plenty. If your using more than that its simple: your abusing the system at someone else's detriment.
Another example to get it through your head:
A pizza store has a 2$ sale on pizza, LIMIT OF 3 PER CUSTOMER. Oh noes, you say, but I am entitled to buy as many freaking pizza's as a want!!! Uh no your not. The store sells you the pizza, they have decided to be FAIR, and sell their limited stock to more than one person.
It's really simple. If you want more than a particular service is offering, you go somewhere else. This is true in ANY business. You can't buy a refrigerator at a coffee shop and no matter how much you bitch about it, it's never going to change. Your expecting a level of service that is not in line with the amount you pay monthly and the physical offerings of the store/service. You want a fridge? Go to the appliance store! You want 1-2TB monthly, get a business class line.
No free rides where I come from mate!
Regards, and get your head out of your ass, ~Blah

| | This MUST be a joke! 100Mbps/5Mbps WILL be consumed in 4 hours, 13 minutes, and 58.1 seconds w/ 200GB cap If I did my math right, using the calculator applet in Windows. Anyhow, how do you spread the d/l & u/l so that it'll last a month..
Ummm.. by throttling my connection w/ my router so that total d/l & u/l speed do not exceed 647Kbps (that is kilo-bits per second). That's totally ridiculous. In 30 days, 24/7 connection operating on 647Kbps will reach 200GB.
| | | The IS in LEAGUE with SATAN!!! You see, you can only download 6.66 Gigabytes per day. Anything less, you not getting your money's worth & anything more you'll be overcharged. They had SATAN in MIND!! :-8 | |
| | | This is nice!
The target here is someone who would buy a Ferrari and just park it in their driveway.
We all know how common that is, just drive down any street in Shaw territory and see the houses with Ferrari parked in the driveway that has not been driven for 29 days. These people will subscribe to this.
| | | | Re: This is nice! and I'm sure you find plenty of Ferrari's in Saskatchewan :P | |
|
| | Rediculous Indeed In the US, the slowest ADSL in my area, 768/128 is $10 a month and is unlimited. I can surpass 200GB w/ even such a slow connection. | |
| Pinchy74Premium join:2004-08-13 Red Deer County, AB | Caps I am on Shaw's Nitro DOCSIS 2 service, which is 25/1. (they rename it as a different service in the DOCSIS 3 markets, where Nitro becomes 100/5)
They haven't updated their website, but as of earlier this week it is now 25/2, at least where I live. The only reason I know this is because I for the past year have consistently got just under 1Mbit upload, and this week it almost doubled in speed. So it could be 25/2.5, but until they change their website I can't say for sure.
I deal with Shaw both on the residential side, and on the business side (Shaw Business Solutions or SBS for short). Their service on the residential side is pretty good, and Shaw Business Solutions is absolutely stellar in their service. Their call centers are located in the regions they serve, they have lots of onsite techs so you don't wait forever to have someone stop by, and their phone support on the residential side is decent. It takes awhile to get through to them sometimes (versus the SBS where I've yet to wait on hold). Service wise, they kick the only other real competition's ass (Telus), who has a whopping 6MBit service - of course ymmv but I don't know many happy Telus customers in my area.
I can tell you right now, they don't care much about how much you DOWNLOAD - I consistently download 300-400GB/month. What they DO care about is how much you UPLOAD. It's the guys uploading a ton that get the warnings, and 9 times out of 10 they are the guys seeding torrents and such.
So to all you Charter/AT&T/etc customers who get slapped with a bill for overages, we don't live in the same realm as you. Shaw doesn't do metered billing, and doesn't strictly enforce their caps. My impression in talking to them has always been that unless you're uploading a lot, they could really care less.
As mentioned earlier, ymmv....
| | | OMG! 100Mbps broadband! (In reference to a tv show called "Gossip Girl"), OMG! 100Mbps @ that price? Seriously. I would probably pull my hair out at any time...
Shaw was once a dominant player in some areas of Scarborough, Pickering and Markham, but after a major "swap" 9 to 10 years ago (when Rogers took over Shaw's service area) - nothing has really changed.
If Robbers were to able to provide that service, I would probably not go for it.
| | | Th cap is useless at that speed .... WHY? cause its too fast like another poster showed you get the whole cap in 4.4 hours or less. THAT'S dangerous and its gonna lead to legal problems im sure when some people get those lovely secure windows boxes hacked all it takes is some hacker 4 hrs in any month to own your cap and cause you harm. What can shaw do about that and with the recent ruling bell got they aren't liable YOU are.
1 megabit unlimited = 200GB roughly id rather have a unlimited that YA i may never use the "total amount 24/7 so you the ISP win. That's how you build your networks 90% using max capacity should do it. that means you save 10% off the cuff and when 90% of people use say 100GB of 1.5 TB that's a massive savings. there might be times when that user uses more. That's what its for.
Id rather see 5 megabit unlimited with 1.5 TB max then a 4 megabit account with 1 GB max a 3 megabit for 500GB and a light for 200GB all these are mostly your unlimited rates and with the 90% build to and the mostly never us it all you are safe and have no excuse to traffic shape, your share holders will not be nervous all the time cause they will get steady flow of revenue instead a bleeding like bell is and such.
AND ya both rogers and bell are bleeding ISP customers now quite a bit. They tried the wireless craze and its not getting them enough people. The texting backfired. AND they cant get there copyright laws through.
When ACTA makes all the p2p apps illegal what are the isps going to do when 90% of the internet vanishes? When the texting devices become illegal due to the fact they are made by the same developers of the illegal software and are thus themselves also illegal? has anyone thought how that legalese comes yet? NOPE MPAA is suing source forge did you people know that over ftp programs? and other file applications. If you remove legality of me to create ill come after you in real life with a real hammer and crack you.
ALL this talk is getting you all no where they don't come here to change there minds , they are on other blogs spreading there lies and such. If you want to really scare the shit out of these idiots hears an idea what if every single pirate and person that wanted net neutrality joined a chapter of the united hackers association, the world would wake up one day with 186 chapters of hackers and people all over the world demanding answers to there questions and openness on ACTA and an end to the tyranny of hollywood.
Failing that well im sure that 300 million souls can do a lot a things in a single day , ill leave what they do up to them and you.
oh and if you have a printer it is your legal right to be able to print up banners and signs to protest things. Nothing prevents you from that. I'm sure some crack head for a few bucks might even glue a few to the shops of these record stores in protest.
Change happens and it almost never happens non violently , if they don't stop this the fact is its going down a very very very dark road i am sure they don't want to see cause it will have them utterly removed completely form any form a power in the end.
| | | caps Shaw does not enforce there limits at all. And if they ever do it is only when you go way over the limit. Like if you download 5TB in a month on extreme-i they will force you to upgrade to nitro.
Do you think shaw would ever disconnect someone paying them $260? They wouldn't even if you were downloading 10TB a month.
I will be getting this service when it gets to my area because I want to be able to download 1080p movies in minutes and it will be the only option available for a LONG time.
| | | seriously seriously who is going to be tricked into paying so much for such a bad deal. I blow through my 200GB cap in 3 weeks with my 15/2 RR connection. I cant image having that service. | |
| | | | Re: seriously According to the most recent shaw tech in my house (last week), this new service WILL be metered and charged for.
I personally can only hope they stick with their current policy, but, that is what I was told about the roll out of DOCSIS3.
I basically told that the existing packages would remain "unmetered" but the new docsis3 fast stuff would be.
| | | | | Re: seriously I have this plan and I already download 1.5TB all Shaw did was cap me to 25mbits until the next month so to all the haters out there the 200gbs is just a marker also they capped me when i got to 900Gbs so please stfu you American losers your just mad because we got 100mbits and your still on 10mbits lmao for sites with bad routing to Shaw routers i get about 15mbits on torrents i get about 70mbit if all the seeds/leeches have good routing to me and on news groups i get about 95mbits | |
