Confessions of a Level 2 Charter Technician

OK. So the tech came, unfortunately I had to go to work 80 miles away on an emergency call. He did call my cell phone.

He understood that I DO know what I am talking about, and we had a very interesting conversation.

He explained to me that my speed issues are due to congestion and not enough bandwidth to support all the customers in the in Ventura area. Also, he explained to me that Ventura and several other cities all share nodes into MTPKCA (Monterey Park Router), also contributing to increased congestion and limited bandwidth. My packet loss issues are also due to the extreme volume on said MTPKCA and other routers, and sometimes they just have to drop packets to serve all the other customers.

He said major upgrades are going on in the SoCal market. I asked is this was the static.unknown.charter.com hops on a tracert. He said yes. I asked if they were sandvine/throttling/cap monitor related hardware upgrades. He said yes. I also asked about if Charter was to be issuing a Bandwidth Monitoring Application, he said "not that I know of".

So, in conclusion, the tech told me they are way overcrowded on their SoCal market, and they throttle bandwidth and monitor the type of bandwidth you use (BitTorrent, P2P, HTTP, Ftp, etc...), they will NOT be issuing a monitoring program so you don't hose yourself, and that there is nothing anyone can do to fix speed/ping/packet loss problems. Basically I am screwed. Therefore, I am going to take this info, with all of my Speedtests, Line Quality, Line Monitoring, Smoke Ping, Tracert, and Ping Plotter info (Printed out of course); and I am going to go to the Branch office and try to negotiate a lower monthly bill. All other Ventura Charter Customers SHOULD DO THE SAME.

I can help if you want, I am actually considering a Class Action lawsuit if things don't get fixed within a month or two, and a call to City Hall, California Public Utilities Commission, and the Better Business Bureau.

Wow...incredible

die, die, die!

Goodbye, and don't let the door hit you on your a-- on the way out!
As a former subscriber of Charter and felt the cost we had to pay was not worth the service, I do hope they fade fast into the sunset and never show it's ugly face again to any susecting new customers.
Let's hope they have the back bone to help their employees before all their CEO's get their grubby hands on their so called bonuses. Let's hear it for FREE DTV!

Dumped Charter

Switched to AT&T Uverse Just in Time

After 11 aggravating years of dealing with a company that consistently ranks dead last in customer satisfaction surveys, I am a free man.

I just switched to AT&T Uverse, and the customer service has been exceptional. They sent 2 techs to troubleshoot on a Sunday within 2 hours of my calling them. They swapped out the modem, and replaced the line from the telephone pole to the house. Charter would have first denied the problem, and then have sent a tech a week later.

I gleefully called Charter the next day to cancel my subscription, and drove to the local office the same afternoon to dump off their gear.

I've got $70 in credit that's supposed to be paid back. Hopefully, I'll get the money back before they file for Chapter 11.

Frankly, even if I'm out $70, it was worth making the switch.

Sometimes $hitty is better than nothing at all...

Unfortunately, Charter occupies areas that they are the only provider. I have no other option if Charter folded tent.

Failed Charter Promises

Charter came to our town (Red Bluff, Ca) many years ago promising a local cable access channel, public studio and cable broadcasting of the local city council meetings. That was over 15 years ago and still nothing. Yet every 5 years they convince the city to allow them to operate. We have poor service, terrible reception due to aging cables and now more lies they are going to update our system with a fiber system that nobody wants or can afford.
