Re: DTV Deputy Program Quiz

Wow, that was really awesome

I did like the "trick" ones that, because of the default font size on my Firefox 3, Mac OS X browser, caused the last few words of the questions to be hidden. I guess I'm REALLY a DTV deputy because I know how to change font sizes to get those words out!

Conversion payments

Here they are paying for converters for those who have not updated their TVs. What I would like to know is what happened to the checks I should have gotten when 8-track was dumped for cassettes and Beta gave way to VHS? I got screwed!

That's because market choosing VHS over Beta not government taking your property, very different thing.

Federal Government mandated conversion from analog to digital TV broadcast in effect rendering your property worthless. They auctioned off portion of TV spectrum (channels 52-69) for new services and used a portion of that money about 10% to compensate citizens via the coupon program.

Re: Conversion payments

Let the transition happen. This has been promoted for the last two years. If the public does not get the new Digital signal, they get what they deserve.

Yeah we're ready... to fall off a cliff !!!

Forget readiness in terms of the broadcasters' readiness to switch signals and consumers' readiness to receive them. This cliff effect thing is starting to look pretty gnarly. Not just a distance issue but a line-of-sight issue? Oh goody.

From what I have read it seems to me that this changeover is going to be one massive crap shoot as to whether or not all the digital signals aimed at a given market will actually reach some, most or all of those in that market. How many people in the sticks are going to buy new equipment in search of signals that don't even reach them?

This is kind of like building a huge new nationwide digital mobile phone network, selling everyone a new handset and then telling everyone that on such and such a date the whole system goes live and everything will work perfectly. (Good luck!)

Re: Yeah we're ready... to fall off a cliff !!!

I have said for a couple years that this might be the end of OTA broadcasting. I think broadcasters were struggling before the transition and I seriously doubt that the transition will INCREASE viewership. Fewer eyeballs means lower ad revenue.

One thing I have noticed, though, is that a couple of the locals here are running old TV shows on their subchannels. I have very little interest in what is on the primary channels these days but the subchannels are offering some interesting alternatives.

Of the two channels here in Detroit that switched last night, I can only receive channel 20. And they screwed it up. At cutover time, they switched to a continuous loop announcing the change and outlining how to get digital.... but they didn't shut off the program audio from their regular program feed for a while. So for a couple minutes you saw the station manager talking and heard a sitcom. I guess at midnight, they had the "B" team on duty?

Impossible to tell for sure but I'd argue DTV may kindle somewhat of a resurgence in OTA interest.

There is frequent criticism of program quality delivered by Cable and to a lesser degree by Sat providers due to transcoding. Service providers often recompress material to squeeze more channels into available bandwidth. A side effect is reduction in quality.

Hard economic times may cause people to rethink spending $50-100 a month for Cable or Sat when OTA is free once one purchases an antenna.

I'd like to see that... a resurgence of OTA... or even better... a decent alternative to pay tv!

It may re-kindle an interest in OTA from a picture quality standpoint but at least for me, I don't care how good the picture is.... if the programming itself sucks glue, I'm not going to waste my time watching it. Currently, I think the "vast wasteland" quote from Newton Minnow is accurate, if understated.

And I have to say that these days it isn't much better on cable. We get about 70 channels and I have to say that I only ever watch maybe 10 of them. Maybe less. I yearn for the good old days when TLC, Bravo, A&E, TVLand, SciFi had worthwhile programming. But no more. IMO.

Re: Yeah we're ready... to fall off a cliff !!!

Being a latte-drinking, Prius-driving, Birkenstock-wearing, book learned, pointy headed liberal family we tend to watch a lot of PBS. Luckily we are able to receive two PBS stations out of Boston WGBH, WGBX and WENH out of New Hampshire.

I was hospitalized a year and a half ago. Being cooped up read and watched a lot of TV. Even with programs I enjoyed like Mythbusters or Dirty Jobs ratio of program to commercial was such that I lost interest. It was a good experience because I was considering getting Cable or Sat rather then upgrading our 20 year old outdoor antenna. That experience convinced me to go the over the air route.

Not only is it a vast wasteland quality wise but poor ratio of program to commercial undercuts pleasure of watching otherwise enjoyable programs.

Deadline

I don't watch much tv, I don't have cable or satellite and I won't be buying that darn converter box no matter how long they push back that deadline.
People had plenty of time to realize the change was coming, ponder over what to do about it and then do it (or not to).

Hotels/Motels... how will they be affected?

Im not sure if this has been covered somewhere else in the forums but...

I have noticed that most "cheap" hotel/motel chains (e.g. Motel 6, La Quinta etc.) subscribe to analog and split the signal to each room - I wonder how many hotel managers are going to get phone calls from guests with "Why TF doesn't the TV in my room work?!?!?" questions?

I seriously doubt hotel chains such as these are prepared to install either OTA HD capable TV's in each room or Cable boxes in each room for that matter - its going to get interesting!

Are you sure they aren't subscribed to digital and just push it out as analog? The few installs I've been on with large complexes have involved one DirecTv dish and a DirecTV box for each channel. Then it is sent out on specific channels as an analog signal.
So there might be 75 boxes for 75 channels but they can all be viewed with a non digital TV.

If they subscribe to Cable or Sat nothing changes unless the service provider moves channels around or replaces analog programs with digital. Even though analog broadcasting stops Cable companies take digital feed and convert it to analog. Satellite has always been digital.

If they use over the air antenna then they have to deal with conversion just like anyone else.

Map of DTV Stations

There's a Map of TV Stations over at »tvmap.org that shows which networks transitioned on the 17th.

It's interesting that some areas of the country that you think would be all digital - like Silicon Valley - had only a few stations make the transition.
