... that triggered the outburst. And besides he had a history of shooting things up:

Police Chief Carl Francis said the wife of Walter Hoover, 70, walked to the police station a couple of blocks away and reported that her husband had been drinking, was angry with a shut-off of his cable service, and had gotten his guns out.
The police chief said Hoovers possession of such a powerful weapon, coupled with information obtained from his wife that he had been in a similar standoff with police on a previous occasion in another Missouri town Sounds like it was more about his cable TV being shut off. No mention in this local news story about a DTV converter.

| Not in Joplin, not brief.... They may have spelled his name correctly but they don't seem to have gotten much else of substance correct:
It wasn't in Joplin, but in the small town of Webb City right outside of Joplin (the Joplin SWAT team was called in since they were available).
His wife reported the problem (she walked a block to the police station), and the standoff was 2 and half hours, not what I'd call brief.
And as has been noted there's no indication it was DTV related, although that's entirely possible. But not necessarily likely given how mush else this story disagrees with all the local media reports I've seen (this is from the other end of the state and adjacent Illinois).

Uncle Sam never stopped delivering the coupons, that was another scare tactic to push the delay. I myself signed up for my coupons several days AFTER the news that there was a waiting list, and received them a mere 3 weeks later. That because 400K coupons expire every week and these are redistibuted immediately. Since the program supposedly "ran out of coupons" they have sent out 3 million of them. By the time the last of the coupons applied for before the waiting list began expire the program will have given out 5 million coupons. This is all without the extra money given to them by Congress.
|
| | | I agree that it is a scare tactic.
As for the people "not ready?" They simply don't want to transition so they'll never be ready.
They get TV right now that works so why should they want to change?

It is unlawful to discharge or shoot a firearm into a dwelling house, a railroad train, boat, aircraft, or motor vehicle, or any building or structure used for the assembling of people.
It is unlawful to exhibit, in the presence of one or more persons, any weapon readily capable of lethal use in an angry or threatening manner.

I think it's asinine to not be allowed to discharge a firearm in your own home, as long as no one is harmed. It's no more dangerous than many other things which go on in a house.

If a bill was passed to move it to June, then how could it have started already? In the bill stations were allowed to go ahead with the transition if they felt they were ready and asked the FCC for permission by Feb 9. 421( 25% of all the stations that weren't already all digital ) got permission plus another 220 station had gone all digital before Feb 17th. So a total of 641 station or 35% of all stations are now all digital. Starting March 14th more stations can go all digital.
