So does somebody who is running a private, secure wifi network inside their home considered a "residential hotspot owner?" I think this absolute B.S. if that's the case. |

How? It's not like every consumer router out there keeps any sort of access log, and if they do it's very limited. |

so small wi-fi "hotspots" now have to buy expensive cisco equipment just to do this? most of them around here have small linksys type routers that don't log much of anything |

| How would they enforce this ?
Sounds like the Big Bother wants a legal remote login to confirm and extract data from wireless routers.
Either that or the Bill sponsers have stocks in very small hard drive manufactures. (you know to be put in said wireless hotspot devices) |

That isn't the intent of the bill - to have private residences keep logs. That is a gross distortion(and interpretation) of the proposed law trotted out by those opposed to it to try and drum up support to defeat it by scaring the avg citizen.
And besides, the 2 bills introduced by Republicans(1 in Senate & 1 in the House) have NO co-sponsors, are buried in Committees controlled by Democrats, and have virtually no chance of coming out of Committee unless re-written by Democrats.
This is just the privacy lobbyists crying wolf to rev up their supporters for battles yet to come.

Not only that but also a server to store logs and backup system too (cause if the HD cashes, it might be considered "destruction of evidence") |

Good luck getting people to do that though... |

The letter of the law needs to be fixed then. As it is now, private citizens will have to keep logs on their routers. |

| Ahh yes
Once again big government has decided that its in the best interest of the children for everyone to keep logs on who does what, even on their own network.
Will this undo the damage already done to a minor? Nope. Will this prevent a baddie from plugging in via ethernet? Nope. Will this be more of a burden on the ISPs and free wifi hotspot providers than it will prove helpful for whoever wants the data? Yup.
Good job. Uncle Sam will be around tommorow to install security cameras in all of your children's rooms. You know, to make sure they are safe and whatnot. |

So every Mom & Pop Coffee Shop out there that provides free wi-fi is going to have to re-invest in new equipment that costs likely 100 times their current setup? |

It isn't even out of committee, where it is likely to die. And it doesn't have any co-sponsors either. "Stopping Adults Facilitating the Exploitation of Today's Youth"
Interesting to note that the exploitation of today's youth is the precise marketing strategy of many successful legitimate businesses.
Who would dare to vote against this bill? It would be a political disaster. The ignorant constituents, of which I include myself on many issues, will not understand or even care about the technical feasibility of implementing such a measure. On the other hand, it will be extremely difficult to enforce.
In the end, it will just be another "pat-myself-on-the-back" law with little or no actual merit. |

Its not difficult to do. Even my 'old' Netgear WGT 624 has a logging function and email log ability.
There are a few issues with what they are proposing.
1. Who's going to pay for it (i.e. consumer in the end) 2. Who's going to enforce it 3. Privacy / security / integrity issues with retention and storage of data (I'm sure that larger corps like AT&T / T-Mobile already have this stuff in place and run this - doubtful on mom/pop hotspots) 4. Security in transmission of data (currently old routers like mine send over email - not wise). -- Canada = Hollywood North |

Not really a huge deal, set up syslog and you're done.
What on earth are they going to match other than a time stamp and a MAC address (unless the laptop owner is dumb enough to put their full name in the machine name field?
