Wasnt the dmca enough?

Im sure that it will get passed. It will be abused to no end by the entertainment industry. Whats stopping someone innocent being sued or whatever? Who is came up with this idea?

Will help governments stop whitsleblowers

A proposal such as this will have chilling effect on whistleblowers - both those within government who attempt to go around bosses/policies which are illegal, obstructionist, or both, and those within government who expose excesses to the press.

Similarly, it will also curb those within the private sector from reporting violations of various statues to authorities, eg. EPA, FDA violations by private industry.

My 2 Cents worth

Ok, so what if everyone just turned off SSID broadcasting? Wouldn't that defeat the whole bill? Because, if the SSID doesn't broadcast, how would the government know that your running a hotspot?

Also, is there anyone who holds the Copyright on the following words: wi-fi, hotspot, hot-spot, hot spot??? Because if they did, couldn't whoever owns the copyright on those words go after the government for copyright infringement, every time they try to make one of these dumb laws?

more unenforced congressional nonsense

CIPA already requires libraries to block porn with filter devices, maintaining access logs will make the cost of a network unworkable.

Kookie legislators

Another neat bit of self-serving idiocy from the mind of John Cornyn (R-Texas).

Arlen Spector is in there too.

Re: Kookie legislators

I'm not worried about the residential hot spot provider...

It's likely some smarty pants will create something that will encrypt each record with a different un known key; so the person being requested to provide the data can hand it over and let the g'ment spend lots of $$$ to figure out what data was captured.

Technically, just providing the data is sufficient. And since the operator wouldn't have a clue about the keys .... well.... we could respond to the g'ment

Wh hope our locks will give your keys fits!

Eh.. Good fsckin' luck..

I operate a public *AND* a private WiFi Network here at my house. I offer around 128kbps internet access to whoever is in range of the public router and I don't give a sh*t what it's used for. I do have a filter (dansguardian) on it, though.

If I have to log every damn user, they can pay for the server *AND* my time setting it up.

I am sick of everyone (mostly the **AA's) logging every damn thing we do. It's *MY* network that *I* paid for. This should be the same for the companies that own the pipes. "Their *MY* pipes and I don't have to log sh*t! If you want me to, pay me (insert 6-7 figure sum here) *PER* log file". I'm sure that'll shut 'em up.

I have 2 words for you.. BLOW ME!! If you want me to log all traffic in and out of my network, you'd better *PAY* me to. Until then, fsck off.

Like the way they pay you for the time and software you use to do your taxes?

Good Point. It shouldn't cost you a ton of money to do your taxes when it's YOUR money in the first place.

Seems screwy to me.

This really sickens me...

Lawmakers will put the burden on businesses without going after the obvious - THE PUBLIC LIBRARY! That's where all of the sex offenders go to avoid being caught by their parole officers. What would you like to wager that libraries are omitted from the legislation? And there's a reason too - they'll claim - an already underfunded library system cannot afford these safeguards/monitoring controls. Just as they always have before. It makes me absolutley sick that the Mayor of Louisville, KY (The not so honorable dweeb Jerry Abramson) made the exact same arguement a few months ago for more library money.

I am with the option to track potential illegal shit on the net but, this bill will infringe on consumers' privacy no matter how they cut it. If this bill actually comes to law, the best way to mandate it without consumer infringment, is for the ISPs to setup a server log where residential and commercial router can then post logs to. And since almost every commercial and residential router these days keep logs, this wouldl be easy.

Don't Be Fooled

what all this is REALLY about is the MPAA, RIAA, ETC. lobbying congress, that's what it's really about, saying it's to prevent child porn is just a way to gain more support.. all these wacky shenanagins started when the MPAA,RIAA ETC. started losing lawsuits and support because of all the illegal things they have done to TRY to win cases.. don't be fooled...

Re: Don't Be Fooled

So.. The government has to protect against psychos who talk to kids online and stalk them?

I think it's the parents fault for not showing them better internet etiquette. Do you walk up to a stranger and just talk to him or her? No. They are a stranger.

No one wants responsibility anymore. "It's *NEVER* my fault. I was a good parent". NO. A "good" parent teaches the dangers of the internet and to *NEVER* give their password out to anyone.

My 14yo sister listened to her big brother (me) and I'm very proud of her. I am disappointed in her friend, though. She gave her password out to a complete stranger and he (or she) used it to send nasty things to my sis.

I relate Passwords to "Keys to the house (or car)". You don't just walk up to anyone and hand them the keys. You give them to someone you truly know and trust.

Re: Don't Be Fooled

actually, NO, this has ABSOLUTELY nothing to do about kids, and i wish people would stop bringing that up, it IS about the MPAA, RIAA, ETC.. playing the protect the children card, i posted the link above to prove it..here it is again, news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10168642-38.html they are using children as pawns in their game, because they haven't gotten action to THEIR satisfaction for THEIR cause.. this tactic has been done before, and seems VERY low-life to me..

Re: Don't Be Fooled

This doesn't surprise me. I've known that the **AA's always find some nasty tactic to use when all their well laid plans get flushed.
