NO.

I will go back to the cheapest form of DSL if finances tell me I have to, which currently runs for $12.99 for a 768 down, 386 up from DSLExtreme, after which I can cancel no problem. (1 year contract on that price). After that it is 19.95 if I want to switch to month-to-month.

Dialup may be $5 cheaper, but I will save my $5 elsewhere, don't touch my damn internet. At least 768/384 will be decent enough for the modern browsing age.

At least I have employment, am happy with my job, and have a 15/2 Mbit/s connection.

Impossible

I telecommute and move lots of big files around in the course of my duties, so if I lose my broadband, I lose my job. End of story. Even though I have a mint USR Courier 56K external modem in the closet (that thing was bulletproof!) I am emphatically not going back to dialup.

I don't have a POTS line anymore either, so I'd actually have to eat a net increase in costs to switch from cable to dialup.

Ah, I remember Wildcat! BBS. Trying to snarf as many Wolfenstein levels and Doom PWADS as possible every day before my time ran out. I was geeked when the ZMODEM protocol became popular because you could actually resume downloads then. Those were the days! (Or were they...?)

If Sprints puts me on a 5GB cap

Then yes. But i would most likely get ISDN.

But for cutting down on expenses no. Everything i do now is on the net. This "recession" is not hurting me yet so i see no need to atm. But im young so i got money to burn

And to top things off, i do work at a datacenter so i "could" live w/o net at home but then i would get no work done at home like i do now.

Would not go to dial-up

I'd drop my landline and cell service, and potentially my TV before I dropped my broadband connection. And as an interesitng point, you can pretty much replace your TV and phone with VoIP and other broadband TV options if you kee pyour broadband.

NEVER!!

I'd never switch back to Dialup. Talk about a major step BACKWARDS.

In my opinion, Dialup should be FREE!! When you want to go faster than dialup, then you should pay for it.

@sbcglobal.net

Heck I pay for 2 broadband services

I have Sprint EVDO and ATT 6.0bm at home... Heck no to dialup.

I would pay 60 a month for dsl/cable.. Either one.. Not wireless though, too unpredictable with games.. But yet i'm stuck with only dialup options in a suburban area...

Even if economic misfortune hits someone

I simply don't see them making a switch like this.
The internet has become a necessity for many people and that would only become more true if they were to lose their jobs given the many resources available for everything from searching for jobs to resume writing to applying online.

And, whether it's a landline, cell phone or cable digital voice service, people won't be giving that up either if they lose their jobs. What will they have employers do, call the local phone booth if they want to reach them?

Instead, I think tough times become more about people looking for value and that's why many providers continue to do well because of bundle pricing. If people are cutting back it's on going out of the home..to restaurants and movies...not on services like tv and internet. If anything, as these other things are cut back..people may even upgrade these other services to add things like movie channels.

There's simply nothing in this whole scenario except for the most desperate to want or have to go back to dialup.
As others have said, you still need the expensive landline and that negates any savings from just going to a low cost cable or dsl plan.

Dial up..is on life support and while it may be around in some shape or form for years..it will never stage a comeback, even in these tough times.

Can't go back to Dial Up!

The webmasters have so bloated their web pages that they take forever to load over a dial up connection. I tried to download a webpage over a relatives dial up connection, Glaciers move faster than the speed with which the webpage downloaded. What is really irritating, is when a news website will not offer an option to download a text file and insists on downloading a video clip so the host can force the viewer to watch an advertisement.

On the other hand the Telcos, by still having a Bell System attitude, lost an opportunity. The Telcos are losing voice customers to VoIP when they already have facilities serving their potential customers. I would drop my cable tv broadband connection for DSL if Telco offered a 3M bundled voice, long distance and data package for $39.95 rather than the present price of $74.95.

Not for me, probably not for parents

Me - No landline, I can use my cell for WiFi tethering if needed, my apt. complex shares a Qwest 5/896 line, I could share another 5/896 with some friends within WiFi range. Or I could downgrade my internet to 1/384 with Comcast and pay $25 per month for a year. Which I've thought about seriously. Especially since I'm able to use my school network right next door, and in a few weeks that will be blazing fast (right now they have an OC3 which is at capacity...they should have their gigabit fiber line up and running real soon ow).

Parents - Probably wouldn't make the switch due to money matters, but they might out of absolute distaste for the current internet provider, as things go from bad to worse to horrid in terms of latency, slow speeds, etc. On wireless, and it's $42 per month for subpar service, to say the least. When I'm down there I ca probably get away with WiFi tethering on my cell, as long as I don't use too much data, so if they switched back to dialup I could stand it. They might not be able to but again their current broadband connection is so lackluster it's a tossup regarding which will be faster any given minute.

Then again, they're keeping a lnadline around, mostly due to the fact that VoIP
1) Won't run over the wireless broadband link
2) Doesn't have local numbers unless you use TWC which we
3) can't get...either cable to DSL

The landline is ultra-basic, just unlimited local calling with long distance done by a third party or a calling card. For whatever reason we're now signed up on LifeLine so the bill is sub-$10 every month.

But if you have cable or DSL, chances are you can get the cheapest tier of service and a VoIP plan (especialy with MagicJack) for less than the cost of a landline and dialup. Granted, I use dialup form time to time and honestly don't find it too paiful, as long as I don't surf rich sites. Downloads I'll go elsewhere for, but if you have to have a landline anyway it actually is a cost reduction, namely in the boonies where VoIP and broadband don't mix.

I hope Lose your job

Not really but what you have no income and need to pay the rent and buy food you quickly find out what is a luxury or not. The amount I spend on broadband can buy me two months or more of food.

When Things get desperate all is on the table. As we march to economic collapse, you all better start thinking about survival.Broadband is no solution to starvation or homelessness.

Would rather share WIFI with neighbor first

I think if money started to get that tight, I would work out a deal with my neighbors and share WIFI before going dial up.

Please don't get started on "the terms of the contract state no sharing"...but that is what I would do.

My biggest monthly downloads are MS updates.
So its not like I would be abusing anyones connection.

I am not trying to justify anything.
If my provider did not provide a lower tier, and I was that hard up for money, then I would share WIFI.

Re: Would rather share WIFI with neighbor first

You can even set up a WSUS or just sheared folder with big update downloads, drivers, and more. Over a sheared cat 5 / and or wifi link to save on bandwidth even more.

You can each get a 1.5 link or get 1 3.0 links for less by going together.

Re: The devil you know...

I too only pay $12.95 with DSL Extreme, which is only $5 more than Earthlink dialup. The money you can make selling crap on Ebay can pay for your internet. If worse comes to worse I'll borrow my neighbors open signal...with his permission.

Hell no!

I would rather poke my self in the eye with a sharp stick than go back to dial-up Internet service.

Re: Hell no!

No way would I even consider dropping down from Standard Road Runner from Road Runner Turbo, so dial up can go to hell along with other outdated crap like floppy disks, VHS tapes and standard def TV. All outdated garbage. I'll NEVER EVER give up my 15/1 connection from TW for $50/month.

NetZero dial-up sucks!

My sister actually pays for NetZero dial-up, which requires their lame software to connect, so it like having two evils.

1995 economy != 1995 Internet connection

Just because the stock market is back where it was in the early 90s, doesn't mean people are going to start accessing the Internet the same way they did in the 90s.

I would never go back to dial-up.
